The top ten trending phrases on twitter are an unpredictable mix of useless celebrities, #memes and eyewitness reports of breaking news, usually before it has been reported by traditional press outlets. Last month, the phrase ‘Dead Island‘ appeared and a click revealed it to be a game, and not a newly announced game, but one revealed some years ago and largely forgotten about. One stylish trailer later and it was one of the phrases on the tip of everyone’s Twit-tongue.
“The trailer we released was mostly a blessing,” says Vincent Kummer, Dead Island’s brand manager at Deep Silver, “because when you put something out there you don’t expect to generate that much interest in the game, especially not for free. However, we are cautious that people might be expecting things from the game, based on that trailer, that simply aren’t there. We’re aiming to make it very clear, early on, what the game is actually about.”
…which is why they’ve invited me to a warehouse in East London to crawl through underground passages, check out the game and eat pizza in a deckchair. Dead Island is a first-person action RPG set on a tropical holiday island during the zombie apocalypse. There’s a heavy reliance on melee combat using items found lying around and you can combine and upgrade weapons at workbenches. We’re told that guns will feature later on in the game.
There’s also four-player ‘drop in and drop out’ co-op, with different character classes to choose from. One of these is ‘The Tank’, and this is the class demonstrated in our playthrough as we were introduced to Sam B, a rapper who wakes up after a night’s partying and discovers the undead epidemic first-hand.
“We have a mixture of gritty, emotional storytelling and over the top characters such as Sam B. He’s the one with the cheesy one-liners to the game but the others are far more serious,” explains Vincent. “You begin the game not knowing anything and you’re going to spend the first two hours figuring that out as people discover that you are immune to being turned into a zombie.”
Unlike other zombie games, and there have been many, what we have seen of Dead Island thus far has been set in bright sunlight. This makes me wonder what their approach to fear is.
“Our approach to fear is to have the player constantly worried for their life and that desperation that comes from having to survive using whatever you manage to pick up.”
“We’re saying that our environment is a paradise to die for and we’re building a full tropical island. It all starts at the beach hotel but you’re going to see jungle, city and some surprise locations that you won’t be expecting. There are also outdoor and indoor locations that are totally different and we manipulate the weather in certain ways to add a new level of fear.”
In the good old days, games used to take the time to explain how their zombies come into existence, like Resident Evil and the T-Virus; but, given that they are so ubiquitous these days, hardly anyone seems to bother. I finished by asking Victor how Dead Island’s neck-munchers came to be.
“Zombies are obviously a part of our story and there is of course going to be background to that – it’s not like they’re just going to fall from the heavens. There are so many zombies out there in different media and different ways to use zombies as a metaphor for some failing of human beings. I’ve always liked to think of them as humans reverted to their basic primal instincts, with no good left in there at all.”
I’ll be keeping an eye on Dead Island and will be inviting the developer, Techland, to come on the blog to talk about the four-player co-op, so look out for that.

Shouldn’t the vid have an age check to input your DOB ?
It’s odd that some vids check ages & others don’t.

Why does the EU PS Blog have a IGN trailer as it’s lead? Can you not get PS3 footage from the developers?
Looks good, for a pre-render off a PC. This game is not on my radar until I see PS3 gameplay footage.

I put it in as a placeholder while I was waiting for the video to upload. It’s the same trailer so it doesn’t really make any difference, but I’ll switch them out when YouTube is done.

They released, what, like 6 screenshots? And all of them are pretty much the same. I don’t know what it is about that setting, but Dead Or Alive keeps popping up in my head. The announcement trailer was great, but the game itself (judging by the screenshots) isn’t all that. It’s not even a game you go “wow, look at those graphics!” and a deep, touching story isn’t something that i’m convinced about when it’s a zombie shooter. But hey (!), still, the announcement trailer was atleast something else.

Such a powerful trailer, one of the best ive seen in a long while. Kinda skeptical if the game will be anything like what i think this trailer represents i.e. the human side of zombie scenarios and a immersive & emotional game ala “Heavy Rain”. Heres hoping.

I just find it really ironic that the PS Blog can embed a video of a little girl getting thrown out a window… let me just repeat that Thrown… out of a window!!! and people getting chewed to bits in a ultra realistic trailer at 1pm in the afternoon but were still retricted to say alot of things on the blog or even retricted to do alot of things on the PS3 itself?
No offence to you James, i think your cool, i think its cool your keeping the community aware and hyped about a game that could potentially be quite awesome but still? its a little odd dont you think?

They’re interesting points you make and hopefully the big PEGI warning at the beginning of the video makes it clear enough that it is suitable only for over 18s.
I think we’re relatively light with our moderation here on the blog and would you really want us to allow people to swear as much as they like? I’m no prude but I find those unmoderated forums a bit unwelcoming and I think that blog visitors would think it unprofessional of us if we allowed lots of bad language in the comments.

I agree with KAP, the over the top censorship son both the forums and PlayTV’s chat feature is in complete contrast to how graphic that trailer is.
I’m not a prude in any way and I’m against all forms of censorship but it really is a contradiction in terms by Sony.
It reminds me of the premise of the South Park movie – Violence is OK but swearing isn’t lol

@KAP. Your words and actions are real, videogame violence isn’t. Simple.

I love zombies and I love good co-op, I’m not convinced about first-person melee combat though but this is definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on, the premise of the gameplay sounds pretty awesome and I’m really looking forward to seeing some gameplay.
With Resident Evil Revival Selection (enhanced ports of Resi Code: Veronica X and Resi 4) and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (said to be developed by Slant Six Games, also featuring 4-player co-op) supposed to be out this Winter it should be a great year for zombie games on PS3.

What a bunch of moaners. Its only game trailer and its about Zombies, so what did you expect? Zombies having a picnic with the family? And what difference does it make when the video is published, its gonna be on the site for ages, at all times. We’re gamers, try to appreciate a good gaming trailer and stop acting like a bunch of old ladies.

I love the sense of the emotional of a loving father to his daughter in this trailer, so perfectly put together people complaining about the violence in this trailer basically is kind of pathetic, like you don’t play any violent games. That is basically what the game industry is about now mostly in every game you will have medium to extreme brutal violence. Nice upload this game looks to be very promising in my point of view. By the way any official release date for this game James? Thanks

Looks nice, I don’t play RPG’s though. I honestly thought this was gonna be more on the L4D tip.

Like everyone else I was blown away by the trailer, probably the best I’ve ever seen for a video game, but everything I’ve heard about Dead Island since then has made the game sound less and less interesting to me.
I was expecting some gritty, realistic, survival horror game – we seem to be getting a knock off of Dead Rising instead…

whats the use to add again the same trailer thats already been posted on Inet for dozens of time
second this game would be released at 2008 and now at 2011 we have a old trailer and thats it?
really nothing usefull to show in 3 years of development?
the trailer is stunning i agree! but after so much years they have to come up with gameplay to keep me hyped.
btw this information was already released about 1-2 months ago, our you guys are slow with new information, our other websites are fast.
again trailer is great, this game have a lot of potential, but now we need to see something new!

IF you want censorship the place to be is USA they slap a banned on the “hanging man” logo.
as you know i loath censorship in films, books, & into games i‘m glad pegi hasn’t demand the game to made cuts. it will passed BBFC no problem at all
let hope we get full uncensord bloody entrails after all have you seen any friendly zombies that doesn’t want your brains in games.

I just watch the trailer she thown not Out but in, by going backwards it loses the shock factor but i like a good scare and anything that got zombies in i‘m hell bent of buying it.

Techland have a HUGE job ahead of them. That trailer made zombies emotional. The game looks a little bit Dead Risingy with the whole “improvise with weaponry” scenario.

I am looking forward to this game, particularly love the unique setting for a zombie game instead of the usual gritty locations (which are fine, but done too often).
However, I must admit I was disappointed when the first information/footage of the game was released after that trailer. After watching that amazing video I was really hoping for the first zombie game that would place a real emphasis on the human side of the battle. I mean, why is survival always so important in these games when we don’t care for the characters or the lack of survival of co-characters.
So whilst I was heavily disappointed at first because it didn’t meet my expectations of the trailer I admit this game sounds fun, unlikely the Game of the Year contender I hoped for after the trailer, but certainly seems like a game worth getting.

other than having the option to make combo weapons and using melee weapons oh and zombies don’t really see the Dead Rising 2 comparison – for a start its first person not third and more importantly it has layer damage – skin – muscle – bone – for anyone that doesn’t think first person melee doesn’t work then check out Left 4 Dead 2 – it worked perfectly
to me the game sounds more like a combination of Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 (being a first person RPG) – personally for me – I have been waiting for this game for years – really glad it’s finally coming – hoping the years it took to make such an ambitious game are worth it
pre-ordered

That is some beautiful music. It reminds me a little bit of LOST. As does the focus on the eye in the opening.
Have to agree that is the best video game trailer I have seen.
