I’m Joey Payne, you may remember me from such blog post’s as “Everybody’s Tennis – The Helghast are coming!” and “WipEout HD Fury Coming to Blu-ray“.
Now I’m here to tell you about Q Music Unlimited and what it can do for you.
Firstly, I’m pretty sure nearly everyone reading this article has a PlayStation Network ID, right (what self respecting gamer doesn’t)?
Well, if you already have one then you are one step closer to discovering all the fantastic features Q Music Unlimited has to offer.
So lets get started, you want music? You got it! Over Seven million tracks are live on the service right now from Major Labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music group and EMI; plus, and this is the cool bit, you can access these from a whole host of Internet enabled Sony devices (including PS3) as well as any PC connected to the net, anytime, anywhere.
Awesome, right?
You can create your own playlists from the tracks available too, so personalising your listening experience is easy.
Also, using Sensme, Music Unlimited can select tracks based on your mood. Didn’t get that promotion at work? Rock out to some Thrash Metal! Spending an evening with that someone special? Mellow out with some smooth R&B.
Like Latin or Jazz? There’s a channel for that! Genre channels contain the best of a genre, selected to give you a great listening experience
Charts are also a feature of Q Music Unlimited with top 100 Global artists, Top Dance Artists and country specific charts to name but a few.
You can even sync your existing music library with Q Music Unlimited, so you can have access to your own tracks wherever you go on your Sony network connected device.
And another thing, Q Music Unlimited does not have interruptions or advertisements that can spoil your listening experience.
If you activate your Music Unlimited account now, you will get a Free, (yes free!) 30 day trial of the Premium service, and be able to experience everything Music Unlimited has to offer.
Plus, we are offering you the chance to attend an exclusive secret gig in London, featuring some top artists, cool DJ’s and a hands-on chance with all the available interfaces, just head to the competition page to be in with a chance, good luck !

I’d love to try it… but we don’t have that service in Portugal yet…
Any idea on when it will be available to us?

When will this service be available in Sweden?

I tried the 30 day premium trial and while I was impressed with the presentation and layout, the database was somewhat limited compared to my musical tastes and my current method of storing and streaming content to the PS3 is free….for life….so I didn’t see any point in subscribing. With so many other….avenues….of steaming capabilities on the internet, I think it will be hard for something like this to find it’s feet as a mainstay to many core gamers but to those that use it and intend to continue I think they will enjoy what it has to offer. Thanks for the info and the 30 day trial though. Good luck with it.

Hi SpiderMike_X,
What sort of tracks were you looking for that you couldn’t find on the service ?

Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 12:19 pm by CircleOfFire
Is there going to be any effort to fix the UI bugs and oddities, as that’s what stopped me from using it the first time.
Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 12:30 pm by Joey Payne
Hey CircleOfFire,
As this is still quite a new service there will always be teething problems at the start but yes, we are always reviewing the service to see if there are improvements that can be made
Thanks

Nothing against the service at all, it’s very good but I take exception to service adverts which don’t state the Automatic Renewal system used by the PSN subscription service. It’s almost like SCEE want to dupe people into signing up.
Warning to anyone trying the ‘Free 30 days’. Do so, but immediately cancel the subscription from within your account management on the XMB, otherwise you will be charged (this should be noted in all further content the uses monthly subs).

Although it looks like a nice service, I’m really not bothered. With the cost of the service, I’d see it as more economicaly sound in the long term to buy a larger HDD and install it, and then store music on that.
I have a 500 gig drive, and plenty of music that I can not only listen to on my PS3, but listen to in games that support custom soundtracks. Can Q Music top that?
I also like how you dodged the acctual price point AFTER the trial runs out. Isn’t it ten euros a month? I’d rather just buy an album a month. I’d much rather have adverts and free music than pay ten euro a month to listen to music, quite frankly. Hell, I’d much rather just listen to my radio, or Grooveshark.
Just seems like a poorly executed idea. I’d say scrap it and go back to the drawing board with this one, especially if it’s buggy. don’t charge a tenner a month and claim “teething problems” when a free version of your service is opperating fine on the same platform.
Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 12:54 pm by Joey Payne
Hi Labreya,
No, Q Music Unlimited does not have in game functionality.
Yes, the monthly subscription price is €9.99.

Intrested but not available in norway yet.
Does it have visualization options and stuff like that? The mediaplayer on PS3 is really crappy.
Move support?
Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 1:53 pm by Joey Payne
Hi twinlight2,
The PS3 interface (the first image in this post) is dyanamic and changes based on the time of day.
I’m not 100% sure on the Move support point though, checking and will get back to you.

I think the service is really good, very smooth on the PS3 and I have found all the tracks and albums that I love.
The online site I do use more though on my PC, still wondering whether to subscribe to the premium service as my only gripe is I really like listening to my music on the move, which Im not able to do with this streamed service, maybe if you guys came up with an app to store your music to android devices or so it would be an awesome and cheap service.

Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 1:56 pm by MikLSP
This looks much nicer than Spotify and the basic subscription is £1 cheaper but then Spotify lets you use it for free if you can cope with ads.
What I would be really happy with would be a free or discounted Basic subscription for PlayStation Plus users, any likelihood of that?

What are the plans for bringing QMusic to more devices in the future, it looks like a great service but its not worth it unless i can get access on more devices.
Specifically IPhones, Androids, NGP

Hi Xenostar,
Great question, we do have plans to release on Sony and third-party Android-based mobile devices and other portable devices.

I‘m loving the New service it still not PSN wallet friendly it was a good thing i did get a visa but that worry me.
it the same with lovefilm i”m uneasy with lovefilm asking me upfront to set which sub 1st to get the 30 free days & i couldn’t risk overdrawn.
in sort i”m uneasy signing up to new services useing the card why doesn’t Q and LF use the PSN funds method with our PSN cards?
Thanks

When will this service be available in Poland?

Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 3:56 pm by weezereire
A great Effort I must admit Sony. Interface is quite slick.
However the pricing is all wrong. Here In Ireland Eircom (ISP)provides a very similar service (to the premium Sony service) free to its customers. Thats right FREE! I’m sure other countries have something similar to offer.
Right now Sony’s offer has far better competition.
Thanks but no thanks

Don’t try this software. It charged me £10+ when I didn’t even ask for it. Contacted Sony and they dodged around the fact of paying me my money back.
I wouldn’t even mind if I got the money put into my PS Wallet so they don’t ever loose it. But nooooooo…I’m still £10 lighter.
Can someone help me!?

keep it up!

Hi Joey,
I have Q Unlimited premium, think its a great service, plenty of music, could do with some bob dylan tho! Anyway my question is, is there any estimate to when the Qriocity Video service is being rolled out as that would really be the best thing for me right now. Also, that picture of the UI, why doesn’t mine look like that??
32

@Joey
Mostly gaming and orchestral movie soundtracks, a little Drum and Bass, Osymyso, some obscure J-Pop.

Hi Joey.
PlayStation is such an established brand, why call the music store Q Unlimited, and something different in the USA? Why not just call it the PlayStation music store, and let PS3 users access it through the PSN?
Give it a soft launch, let PS3 owners download and buy mp3s and movie files, and let it grow organicly?
Q Music seems like it has potential, but why squander the opportunity to build on the PlayStation brand?
Posted on 28 March, 2011 at 6:49 pm by Joey Payne
Hi VenomUK,
As Battery-Acid- points out this service is not limted to the PlayStation platform.
34
Posted on 25 March, 2011 at 11:30 pm by Battery-Acid-
I cannot see me using this very much, unless it is released on NGP. But it does seem like a good service & I shall definitely try it out. Although, as others have mentioned, I would have prefered it to be compatible with the PSN Wallet, and I may have even tried it sooner if this payment option was available.
I don’t entirely understand though, why wouldn’t we just use Vidzone? – It’s completely free afterall.
Does Q Music offer a wider selection of tracks, or better sound quality perhaps? I can see from the images in the post that it offers a much smoother UI than Vidzone but are we really expected to pay for that alone?
As I said, I will try it out. Thank you.
Posted on 28 March, 2011 at 6:52 pm by Joey Payne
Q Music Unlimted can be accessed on any internet connected PC and a variety of Sony internet enabled devices where as Vidzone is only avilable on your PS3.
Yes, I’m pretty sure that we have a larger collection of tracks too.

I don’t believe the service is exclusive to PlayStation so I, personally, don’t find “PlayStation Music Store” very fitting.
I do agree with some of the points you made though.

I’m using it and I think it’s a fantastic service. I have an extremely large music collection already but I think a lot of people here are missing the point. Your paying a nominal monthly fee for access to a extremely large amount of music monthly. You can also access the cloud a number of different ways. It’s a simple and phenomenal proposition.
It can only get better from here with it on it’s way to the PSP, android phones and by extension it should be available at launch for the NGP.

i am a subscriber to this service. it’s nice but there are things that keep it from making a great service.
The user interface is not up to scratch. They need to make it sleek, colourful and always simple at the same time.
i cant download any of the songs into my hard drive. give us the option for that. i will pay if i have to.
lack of multitasking. what use is this service if i can only use it by itself? i like to listen to music while browsing the internet and playing games. it is a joke that this application can only be used by itself. someone in japan should lower the memory usage of the ps3 operating system and allow it to incorprate the service. so that when i am driving in gran turismo or shooting in killzone 3 i have the option of listening to the service at the same time.
as it now stands, it’s just an average service. even spotify offers much and i would never use spotify in the first place because it’s limited as well.

@Joey : Thanks for the reply.
Maybe someone else, who has subscribed, can enlighten me about visualisation options, equalizer, playlists and such?
Can you play a bunch of tracks, queue some more and have a nice visualisation covering the whole tv for pretty viewing during parties?

I couldn’t get Music Unlimited Sync to work – it would sync a dozen or so of my tracks and then freeze. Support were useless and I cancelled when my 30 days were up. Have you fixed this issue yet?
45
Posted on 27 March, 2011 at 1:28 pm by Cyba_Cowboy
I’m almost at the end of my trial and I have to say, Music Unlimited is absolutely AWESOME!!!
At first, I was a little skeptical of the whole streaming-music thing, but for what you pay ($AU12.99 at the time of writing), it’s incredible value, especially given the “unlimited” nature of the streaming and the size of their catalog.
Now all I need is the PSP (PlayStation Portable) client to become available, and support for my Sony Ericsson Cedar (though I sincerely doubt the latter will happen!)…
46
Posted on 27 March, 2011 at 1:30 pm by Cyba_Cowboy
I should have added – it would be great to see the ability to purchase music you’re listening to, for those tracks and/or albums that one simply “must” have… Integrating Music Unlimited with bandit.fm (Sony’s version of the Apple iTunes Music Store) is possible way of achieving this.
47
Posted on 27 March, 2011 at 2:55 pm by Ryusennin
It’s not incredible value. It’s way too expensive.
Why should I pay for an extremely limited service when I can get so much more for free from Deezer, Spotify, etc?

Dear Joey
I’m living in Hong Kong. Is there any word on when any Qriocity services will be coming out over here? There’s currently no music store or streaming services here on PSN, and I’d gladly pay for it.
I did try Music Unlimited out on my old UK account though. There’s a couple of things that would make me want to subscribe:
1: Streaming Music Unlimited as a custom soundtrack. I know this might not be possible technically, but it would be amazing if I would use cloud music when playing games. It’s something that you guys should definitely get on NGP or any other future PS console.
2: Listen in PlayStation Home. One of the biggest problems with Home is the lack of music, and one of the biggest problems with Qriocity is that people won’t normally turn on their PS3 just for music. Put them together, and both services would greatly benefit
49
Posted on 27 March, 2011 at 5:02 pm by pitythefool852
It’s also strange how we can’t buy the songs we’re listening to. I know the idea is about cloud music, but if people want to pay for a song, let them. There should be a button on every song page to purchase the song. Not every device we own is online 24/7. It’d be good to feel like we “own” some of the content. Also, if we could download, it’d be easier to put songs as a custom soundtrack.
Besides that, Music Unlimited looks good… it’s a shame it’s still not available here in Hong Kong

Shame to see this as a seperate initiative and not incorporated into Spotify. Would be great to see that happen and would probably increase you user base, because everyone with a payed Spotify account will probably not pay another extra 10 pounds for QMusic.
Now you get 2 seperate major services. Combining those 2 into 1 would help the end users a lot more. This in the sence of an even bigger and completer database.
