As someone too fond of sitting to ever run a marathon, I never imagined I’d ever have that experience of a crowd cheering me to a finish line. And yet this week, albeit doing something far more sedentary, I received many PSN messages from people willing me on, which was nice.
I finished Yakuza 4 on Hard on Friday and spent the weekend dipping into some of the activities on the periphery of the game in Premium Adventure Mode. Normally, the game would be filed away in the cupboard as soon as the credits had finished rolling but I’m pressing on. The plan is to do all of the side-quests before stocking up on Taurinier for a playthrough on Extra Hard.
Below is how I’m getting along so far, with trophies earned in bold. I’m not going to be using any online guides so if you have been playing the game too and can offer any tips then that will be a huge help. In particular, I need hints on how to play Pachinko because I currently have no idea what I’m doing; I need to know how to collect emblems from gang fights, because I don’t think I have any yet; I have no idea where to find the ‘non-casino gambling games; and what is shogi?

Way to go, James. I’m keeping an eye on your progress through PSN as well

I’ve been silently stalking your progress, and for someone who says they tend not to go for platinums, you’re tearing through at a pretty solid rate. Not too much left to go.

It’s getting there, I’m just worried there’s going to be a rock solid one that’s going to trip me up.

Shogi is basically the same as chess

Keep your eyes on the prize. I’m looking at the Plat on KZ3 at moment although it’s being interupted by Shift 2 and Mass Effect 2 (doubt I’ll Plat either as I work on trophy vs time to judge if its worth the effort for some harder trophies) amongst others

I think you should read the Wikipedia article on Shogi as it explains what pieces can move and in what direction.
It wouldn’t count as an online guide, because you’re not getting gameplay advice, you’re merely finding out the rules of the game.

I was actually thinking that a trip to Chinatown to try and learn Mahjongg and possibly Shogi in person might make for a fun blog post. I wonder if I’d be allowed to expense a trip to Shanghai for the cause?!

Nice one James. This platinum shouldn’t be too long now. What you’ll tend to find now is that you’ll either be sinking alot more time in to it or too little time toasted the end so my only tip is to simply pace yourself dowager the finish line dude.
It always helps me to do it that way. The more I see you playing yakuza 4 on PSN the more icwant buy it but I got motorstorm 3 and naruto to finish off which to be quite honest is doing my sweed in but these 2 platinums from each of these games will bump my platinum amounts to 50 so it needs to be done.
The life of us trophy who… Hunters is a stressful one lol
Posted on 5 April, 2011 at 5:36 pm by James Gallagher
Wow… 50 is a lot! I’m taking an enforced break at the moment as I’m on a business trip, but I’m going to hit it hard this weekend and hopefully get over 50%

@4 The trick to beating ME2 on Insanity is to do it with a new game, not a new game +. The game increases the difficulty, especially for bosses, in relation to your level. So if you start a new game +, you will most likely be around level 25, making it much harder than starting a completely new save! Buy a few weapon packs from the PSN and you will find it much easier.

Keep it up James.. the more you have to finish the more rewarded you will feel when you obtain your platinum..
I got some other games to finish off first so I don’t see Yakuza 4 for me in the near future.. and with the imminent release of MK My focus goes out to Crysis 2, Splatterhouse.. etc.

As someone who has yet to complete Yakuza 3, just did a boss fight and unlocked the fighting arena mini game, can’t help but have respect for someone who wants to get the Plat for 4. To me, shows some passion and dedication. Yakuza plat seems difficult and time consuming.
Best wishes, although I feel inspired now to finish 3 and get as many trophies as I can.
Posted on 5 April, 2011 at 5:39 pm by James Gallagher
It’s actually not too bad when you get into it. When I got to the fighting arena I was worried I’d have to reach the very top rank but you actually get the trophy after winning four or five tournaments and they’re a good way to level up for later bosses anyway. I’d say you have to do and see everything to get the platinum, but you don’t have to perfect everything, if that makes sense.

Awesome! I just beat it yesterday and I already started all the extra mini-games and stuff in Premium Adventure. What did you think of the story James? I thought it was brilliant, think I preferred 3′s finale though.
A few tips for the trophies you still need based on my experience with them:
Shogi is pretty much like chess, the trophy for it is extremely easy, just move the pawn-like pieces forward until you can manouver an opening to get one of the pieces that move like bishops to get to the opposite end of the board.
Mahjong is a bit more time consuming but it’s a fun game. For the trophy alone play against the easy guys and just get rid of pieces if you can see someone else has or has already got rid of one of those already, there are four of each piece in play and you’ll need seven pairs but it’s not really a rare hand to come across, you’ll need a litle luck though.
The non-casino minigames can all be played at Ryugujo, they’re on the other floor instead of the casino one.

Great tips here, thanks very much. I’d pretty much worked out that route for the money/gambling/guns trophies but I was a bit stupid and wasted most of the gambling items on my first play because I wanted to see what they did. Mind you, I did end up with a lot of platinum plates so I’m up to about 7 million in cash, so not far to go. I’ll probably make up the rest as Akiyama to get his silver. I was wondering why Akiyama could only sing three karaoke tracks so thanks for the tip. I thought I had to perfect them to unlock more, or something. Also, I might have a tip for you: I’m pretty certain that different hostesses tend to go for different characters, so swap them around to get all of the business cards.

I’d save pachinko till you’ve done the substories and found some more locker keys as there are penty of cheat items you’ll pick up along the way to help with pachinko.
For memo master you get most through the story but there are some like one on the roof that you may miss, also Naomi gives you 3 I think if you keep talking to her for ages, and the trophy comes up when you look at them in the menu.
For the bowling trophy how I play is I go 3 clicks to the right, then aim the ball a little left of the first pin, then put a little spin on it to the right. Takes some practice but when you get it strikes are pretty easy.
And for karaoke Kiryu can do all 11 tracks, the others can’t do some of them I think.
As for making money for Akiyama and stuff, I’d save at the batting center and go to the casino, bet 10,000 on the banker on baccarat and then save if you win, reload if you don’t. Then you can exchange winnings for platinum plates and sell them at Ebisu, the pawn shop.

^Doing that at the casino will help you with the Walking Bank, Akiyama and Tanimura trophies, and you can spend the winnings on buying the handguns from the weapons dealer on the rooftops for Saejima’s tropy too.
Now I’m off to play through all the hostess maker stuff… though I’ve never really enjoyed the hostess stuff, lol

beat insane on ME2 on the 360 – I was an infiltrator – you don’t need to buy any weapon packs at the end of yr first playthrough you get a choice of becoming skilled in a weapon outside your class or in my case because of my class a very nice sniper rifle – I chose the rifle.
remember to send your party ahead let them take the damage – the hardest part for me was the bit on the collectors ship with the flying platforms Miranda is good for taking down guardians extra shield – the ones that possess other enemies – I used the krogan as well
its not easy and there will be tearing hair out moments – persistence is key
got my 4th plat on RDR – now going for my 5th – thinking of trying to plat a game a month as I’ve earned 4 plats in my 4 months of having a ps3 – maybe Dead Rising 2 or Atelier Rorona or Ar Tonelico next

I’m looking close to getting my 1st platinum on Prince of Persia :TFS.
Its taken me all of about 5 days to get most trophies on the first playthrough, and the final few shouldn’t be too hard to get. Thing is though, it’s a bit easy, would this platinum be a badge of shame?
Posted on 5 April, 2011 at 5:30 pm by James Gallagher
Of course not! Games are all about enjoying yourself and if you like the game enough to want to see it through to the very end, that’s great.

I started the long trip for Platinum in Wipeout HD, the 2nd hardest platinum trophy in PS3 history. I didn’t know it when I started, but hell, I love this game and if this is gonna be my 1st platinum – all the better 9if I’ll ever get it) ;]
It’s a shame there’s no Platinum Rush track from Wipeout Pulse in WOHD, that would be quite fitting ;]
