We know you’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of DiRT 3 and now that wait is finally over, DiRT 3 is finally here and we’ve packed it to the rafters full of amazing content! Feeding off the fantastic community feedback we had on DiRT 2 the studio has crafted a masterpiece. To coincide with today’s global launch we’ve just released an all-new trailer. The ‘World of Racing’ trailer features DiRT 3′s wide range of game modes, from traditional Rally to innovative freestyle Gymkhana events, plus Trailblazer, and multi-car Head 2 Head, Land Rush and Rallycross stages, with all of these available online as well. Why not take a look to get yourself in the mood for some intense racing action.
DiRT 3′s extensive online gameplay features are enabled with something we’ve termed the VIP Pass, the access code for which is included in each retail box. This one-time use code includes competitive multiplayer modes, allows players to upload gameplay videos direct to YouTube and comes with five additional cars for use in the game.
The VIP Pass for PS3 will be redeemable shortly, pending the restoration of PlayStation Store. The VIP Pass will also be available separately from the Store for £6.29 / €7.99 / $9.99. Each in-pack VIP Code is one-time use.

Great, can’t wait to play it.
Thanks for including splitscreen, Codemasters. Lots of (racing) games tend to ignore it nowadays, but it will always be a significant feature.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:52 pm by Benjamin Bateman
Glad you’re looking forward to it.
The mulitplayer is really great fun and we’re glad that splitscreens return. A lot of developers leave it out because it’s difficult to implement while retaining the graphical fidelity of the game. I’m happy to say it’s a smooth and stunning experience.
Perfect for an evening with the mates!

I was greatly disappointed with Dirt 2, as I bought what I felt was a meant as a rally game with misc extra, but instead I felt I got a misc extra game with some rally bits tagged on. I heard this was fixed in Dirt 3, but I have to admit being uncertain still about buying it.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:20 pm by Benjamin Bateman
There’s 60% more rally in DiRT 3, the most in the series to date. Also we’ve added hardcore rally mode to online that takes away the HUD, assits, and locks you to the head cam. It’s great fun!

These online passes are the number one reason the Store should get back online asap (I also want to redeem my LA Noire DLC code!)
Will pick up Dirt 3 soon. It waits for me at the shop I work, but as I’m enjoying a weeklong break from work I’ll have to pick it up monday. Dirt 2 is my number 1 race game on PS3, so, bring it on!

So, let me get this straight, you took out a load of features that should have just been on the game disc and put them into a special ‘VIP Code’ instead just so that you can charge people who buy it pre-owned an extra £6.29? How tight can you get?!?! You will have already sold the game once but you also want to take your cut from the new owner who buys it 2nd hand too! I’ll pass thanks…

Nail could not have been hit more on the head. This is something that is increasingly becoming common practice. In some cases, DLC is coming out before the game!!! The content is already developed for the game and yet developers have been given a way of squeezing a few extra pounds/dollars/yen/etc out of everyone. Fed up of being charged extra for things that should be in the game from the start.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:23 pm by Benjamin Bateman
Sorry you feel this way. The truth is that the game has to go through a rigorous submission process in the last 1-2 months before it comes out. Rather than wait for the go ahead we look at opportunities to develop new content for the game.
Out of the box DiRT 3 is the biggest game in the series yet. I’ve been playing for 20 hours and I still haven’t completed the career!
We appreciate the feedback, thanks.

Thanks a lot for releasing this worldwide on the same date. Sweet to get a new game so early in the week. Going to get this after work and play it with my G27 wheel. Going to be awesome!

Definatly agree, Fifa, Mortal Kombat and I’m sure there is more then likely alot more. It’s a horrible practise that they shouldn’t be allowed to do.

@6,9 and 11: While I agree that shortchanging content to make it DLC sucks (especially when the DLC feels like it was meant to go into the game and the game lacks a proper ending without it), I don’t disagree with the online pass strategy as long as it is kept reasonable. The reason is that used game sales doesn’t benefit the creators of the game at all (and while I am not feeling sorry for them I do feel they are more deserving than my local retailer), neither does it help cover the cost of running the online servers etc., so as long as it is kept below 10£ I think it is fair enough. And what I expect to happen is that the used game price falls correspondingly, so when you buy your game used and buy an online pass, you will more or less pay the same in total as you would for a used game which hand online ‘included’.

@1 Great first post.
@Ben This trailer does nothing for this game!? Why produce a trailer that shows no in game footage?
@me this has just arrived on my door step and I cannot wait to play it, the “other” game play videos look so so good! Dirt 2 was spectacular, this looks even better! Great work!
Fantastic game!
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:25 pm by Benjamin Bateman
This trailer is all in-game footage!
They really stepped up the graphics for DiRT 3. Check out our YouTube channel for more great gameplay footage. http://www.youtube.com/dirt3game

Awesome, I’ve been looking forward to this one.
Once the PS Store is back the Dirt 3 demo is the first thing I’ll download, so that I can make an informed purchase.
…because there WILL be a demo, right?
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:26 pm by Benjamin Bateman
We’ve not announced any plans for a demo at this time. Keep an eye on our facebook page for the latest news.

i agree the online pass is a rip off….most games make more via resale in the longrun and to deliberateley leave parts of the game off the finished article then charge people to download them is robbery….that said i have no objection to dlc that is developed after the game is released.

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 12:47 pm by funkpower
Oh, and the DLC being announced before the game is released (within the trophies) is very naughty, Why did the DLC not get included into the game? Naughty Ben, a quick buck is bad.
Still love Dirt though.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:33 pm by Benjamin Bateman
While DiRT 3 goes through submission we look into opportunities to develop more content so as not to waste the time we have.
The truth is that no time has been wasted making DiRT 3. It’s the biggest game in the series yet and you’re getting a complete polished package.

@12
I can see your point of view in that everything that we are able to play online has a certain cost attached for us to be able to do that. And that these costs need accounting for. However, there is a real danger that the increasing movement will lead to a “pay to play” online charge for all games. I, for one choose the playstation as my console of choice, for the sole reason that it is free to play online multiplayer. ( I dread to think of the xbox 360 players that have to buy the game, pay to play online, and then have to buy a VIP pass to play multiplayer!!!) The cost would be best absolved by using a more traditional method of releasing quality ADDITIONAL features/modes after the release of the game. I.e things that are not integral to the actual game. This is a fair way of developers getting back some of the costs associated with server maintenance, etc, and players/consumers/customers not feeling cheated out of core elements of a game.

@12
and (cause my word count was too much…oops
)
I disagree with the pre-owned argument ( fair as it is because developers don’t get any profit from it as you rightly point out ) because if a game is of high enough quality and entertains the consumer, there is no need to trade it in. Hence less pre-owned copies are available, and usually for not much less than the new/rrp price. ( see cod black ops, still more than £25 preowned ) .

Does this differ itself from almost all other racing games of today by having 2-player split screen?

It sure does. We’re proud to be able to include splitscreen in DiRT 3

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 1:05 pm by Scuffy_P
Like an absolute fool I bought the PS3 version yesterday. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game, just minus some large features like ONLINE (can’t redeem pass), or Youtube uploads. Thankfully my local game store let me swap it for a 360 version, while he returns the dozens of unwanted PS3 copies.
Anyway, I finally made the right choice. Won’t make that mistake again.

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 1:14 pm by carlosdfn
I was actually thinking “well, at least people will be able to play this one online from day 1.”
Then I read the article and realize you need to access the store to redeem the pass and I just couldn’t help laughing my head off.
And yeah, these passes should be ilegal.
26
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 1:20 pm by Scuffy_P
@ Johnyd32
Developers don’t make a penny off 2nd hand sales….not one stinking penny. The store where you no doubt buy ridiculously over-charged 2nd hand games (not just you, everyone) keeps ALL the money. Hence why retailers push the sales of these 2nd hand games harder than new releases.
I believe a developer has every right to try and get paid for THEIR products, via these VIP pass deals. If you want to be angry at someone be angry at the retailers, not the developers and publishers who are the ones being screwed over by this manufactured retail market.
*End rant*

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 1:37 pm by grimbarian
@26
You are absolutely right that developers should get paid for their products. They are the ones that have toiled and sweated to create something for us all to enjoy.
However,
I think the main thrust of the discussion is that a core element of the game will be unavailable for some, who for various reasons, may not be able to, or are unwilling to, buy the game new.
I hate to use it as an example again (because i hate the game) but take COD Black Ops. Everyone knows that Treyarch will have been working on the additional DLC maps and modes long before the game was ever released, however they have cleverly delayed the launch of that part of the game so people keep interested for longer, and shell out more in the long run. Thus offsetting some of the developers hard work and the cost of keeping servers going.
These VIP passes feel like a very cheap trick to achieve the same thing.
31
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 1:37 pm by Retro_1973
@26 Fair point but you have to balance that against the fact that the game will be sold for around £40+ when new so they don’t need to be greedy and expect more money from subsequent sales of the same game 2nd hand. Server costs, boo-hoo – whatever – not our problem but these sly money grabbing antics leave a bitter taste in people’s mouths who may be less keen to buy future releases from you. Just sayin…

How can they post this? Especially when you need to redeem codes to play online and you cant as the PS store is not available? I have Yakuza 4 LE and Brink LE, still waiting for the PS Store so I can get the DLC so why bother posting this when you cant play it online? I am furious as the store is still not up and I have games I want to play but need the DLC!!waste of money IMO….

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 2:58 pm by shenstra
Got my copy this morning, along with a Driving Force GT wheel. Great stuff. Still getting used to the wheel, so I’m struggling a bit, but still having fun. I do quite well with all the assists on, but they almost make the game play itself… With most of the assists turned off I’m now managing to do okay, though I frequently find it difficult to exit turns properly.
But anyway, great game. I love rally and I’m pretty sure this game will replace Burnout: Paradise as my go-to racing game.

Another reason “online pass” just sucks. :-/
50
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:34 pm by grimbarian
@ Ben,
Thanks for your reply to my first post. (9)
It seems to indicate ( which I’m sure is not true ) that the online element of the game was developed while the rest of the game was in the submissions process.
I understand extra content being developed and released after the core game, that’s good business.
The gripe of some consumers is the online pass, which as rightly indicated, prevents consumers who buy the game pre-owned from playing a core element of the game. ( or worse as is the case with the PS store at the moment, prevents anybody )
If a customer has bought their game new ( reserving their online presence ) and then trades the game in; their place is now defunct. It seems “uncharitable” to then charge a second user for the ability to use this now defunct online presence.
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:48 pm by Benjamin Bateman
Sorry for the confusion, I was specifically referring to DLC.
As for the Online Pass it’s quite a complicated topic. As a gamer myself I understand where you’re coming from but at the same time I can see the industries logic behind it.
