We know you’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of DiRT 3 and now that wait is finally over, DiRT 3 is finally here and we’ve packed it to the rafters full of amazing content! Feeding off the fantastic community feedback we had on DiRT 2 the studio has crafted a masterpiece. To coincide with today’s global launch we’ve just released an all-new trailer. The ‘World of Racing’ trailer features DiRT 3′s wide range of game modes, from traditional Rally to innovative freestyle Gymkhana events, plus Trailblazer, and multi-car Head 2 Head, Land Rush and Rallycross stages, with all of these available online as well. Why not take a look to get yourself in the mood for some intense racing action.
DiRT 3′s extensive online gameplay features are enabled with something we’ve termed the VIP Pass, the access code for which is included in each retail box. This one-time use code includes competitive multiplayer modes, allows players to upload gameplay videos direct to YouTube and comes with five additional cars for use in the game.
The VIP Pass for PS3 will be redeemable shortly, pending the restoration of PlayStation Store. The VIP Pass will also be available separately from the Store for £6.29 / €7.99 / $9.99. Each in-pack VIP Code is one-time use.

@26 …..so in your mind the developers have the right to try make money from the games resale?….sory dude but that logic is flawed..a example. i buy a new car lets say a bmw because i bought it new i got electric start as a upgrade…i then sell the car does that mean the new owner should pay bmw to use this function? of course not. once the game is bought by the first person that then becomes there property.so when i trade it in and the next person buys it they should get what i did its as simple as that.once the disc id in my hands its no longer anything to do with the developer.they already got paid.
used games market is huge same as most things that are pre owned it online the games market that trys to make money after there product is already been bought once.

edit …the last part should be “that are preowned its only the games market that try,s to make money after there product has already been bought once”

@51
Unfortunately with video games it’s not that simple.
When you buy a game, you are only actually a way of playing that game. It is an agreement between you and the developer that they will let you play their software. Nothing becomes your property ( which is why modding, etc is not part of the EULA )
You are granted a license to use the software, so it is confusing the that the “VIP pass” is sold separately, yet grants almost the same thing (exclusively for online). If someone could clear that up for me?

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 3:58 pm by grimbarian
@ Ben
Thanks for clearing that up. ( ref 50 )
And agreed, the online pass is a complicated topic. I also understand both sides. Just don’t agree with one.
I appreciate you taking the time to respond and hope the launch goes ( is going ) well.

My pleasure.
We’re really happy with DiRT 3 and hope everyone will share in that enjoyment.
We really appreciate all feedback, so don’t be afraid to tell us what you think (especially all the good stuff

@53 i genuinly didn,t know that…i had a chat with a bloke on playstation helpline a while back about gamesharing (my son had used his five accounts to share maps)…according to him once you download a dlc lets say mw 2 mappack that then becomes your property.hence why sony allow you to share that dlc with 5 other machines, they wont allow more because obviously everyone would be sharing the dlc but legaly that dlc is yours to do what you want…sureley actual games must be the same?

sorry ben gone way off topic….hope the launch goes well.

No worries, that’s perfectly fine!
What do you think of DiRT 3? Are you going to pick it up?

Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 4:10 pm by grimbarian
@55
Unfortunately I don’t have a game manual to hand (at work) but if you read all the legal stuff it sets it out in there, same with the EULA (licensing agreement)

Another game with online passes
getting sick of them it’s costing me an arm and a leg, my son and i always share games allowing us to play more (we both have PS3′s) but having to pay £7/£10 etc for the online passes is just becoming too much of a hassle. looks like Dirt 3 will just have to wait a couple weeks/months til it drops in price for me then, shame

charging some1 who saved money on the game extra to play online? i dont see what wrong with that and the original owner gets a online code with purchase of the game but 7 pounds jus extortion

They don’t need to be greedy? Are you serious? The 2nd hand market dwarfs that of new release sales, so how is it “greedy” to want to be paid for a product you make? The retailers are the “greedy” party here, REFUSING to reach an agreement with publishers to share profits from 2nd hand sales.
The developers and publishers are not the ones to blame for online activation, but simply the greedy retailers for refusing point blank to work alongside the very people they’re making money from.

Hi Ben! Glad DiRT 3 is out and I’m hoping to buy it after my exams next month! I’ve just got a couple of questions for you:
1) What’s the reason for dropping the Colin McRae name off the title? Was it the McRae family that decided to do this?
and..
2) What’s your favourite new feature that the game now has?
Posted on 24 May, 2011 at 4:40 pm by Benjamin Bateman
Good questions!
1) That’s a tough one but the series as a whole has developed beyond just rally. Colin McRae helped shaped the game and his influence is still there. His name may not be on the box but it’s got plenty of tributes to him in-game. If you talk to Ken Block or Kris Meeke they both talk about Colin being their mentor. Removing his name is just to reflect that the series has evolved, but everything he’s achieved has not been forgotten.
2) Another tough question, there’s so many features to choose from. I think if you like rally you won’t be disappointed, but you’ll be surprised at what Gymkhana will offer. Not only does it give you some *very* difficult skill based routes and tricks to perform but it opens the game up to some great multiplayer game modes. Outbreak and Transporter are some of the most fun multiplayer modes I’ve had in a long time.

Anyway, DiRT 3 is the best yet, and I’m glad its less Americanised than DiRT 2. I do miss howvever, the front-end from DiRT 2. The “paddock” system was, oddly enough, a lot clearer to navigate than the system employed in DiRT 3 (why the obsession with triangles? 3 sides, ie: DiRT 3?).
Also I think the occlusion of leaderboards is a terrible shame (especially for PS3 users who STILL can’t play DiRT 3 online). The inability to save HD replays is odd too, especially as you can upload them to Youtube, and why you removed the screenshot feature is criminal. 2 friends bought DiRT 2 previously because of the in-game 1080p screenshots I sent them.
But I’m loving DiRT 3 (360 version now), and Codemasters continue to show themselves the “masters” of this genre.

Good feedback.
Been looking for another driving game after being disappointed with Test Drive unlimited 2 (so much promise……)
Could be tempted after your honest appraisal.

@67
Please for one moment don’t think don’t love DiRT 3, as I do. The car control is second to none, the weather dynamic genuinely effects the race, and this is without a doubt the most beautiful racing game ever made.
My previous remarks regarding certain omissions, was just that, a remark. Neither take anything away from DiRT 3, but simply would’ve added to an already great game.

And let me guess? This pre-release DLC is going to cost customers money. Great rip-off!
I feel sorry for all the people that bought this and are have a incomplete game.
This seems to become a habit of you guys? still waiting for the upgrade from F1 2010 beta to the full game…

It has an onlnie pass, no purchase from me. In fact I am glad it was mentioned, I was about to go out and buy it lol. Nothing personal, I loved DiRT2, just that I can not redeem those things as it did not let me when I got Fifa 11.

i will not be buying this game, i’ve been a big fan of this series in the past but i just cannot support any publisher that decides it’s profits are more important than our rights to legally resell any media we’ve bought and paid for.
why does the games industry think it alone deserves a cut when we sell or give away our purchases when no other industry does?
what do you have against this perfectly legal trade?
ok, so it’s in competition with you, most companies have to accept their competition, and try to do better than them to beat them, they don’t get to use dirty tricks to do it.
people have been selling on and giving away books for centuries.

annother nail in the gaming market im not paying full price for half a game simples….. it makes me sick….. not all people can buy new its been going on for years and has been an intragal part of the industry they have finally found a way to make us pay for all those years of lost revenue in pre owned sales….. on the other hand i hate the way GAME gives your 15 pound for a 40 pound game that u bought only 3 weeks beforehand and then resells it for 27-30 pounds thats all profit for them every penny. It makes me think that they only sell new to get back the pre owned copys just to sell on why do the publishers let them get away with this just dont sell them the games new in the first place offer the sales to

say tesco or argos or open a chain of stores between the publishers that way u only pay the wages and you will get more of a cut of the profits and better overheads let them then deal with the measly trade ins i for one would buy from you imagine the big 5-10 publishers got together and done it and then allowing the smaller devs there place on the shelf, and looking after it is a independent board of directors that are impartial to what ever dev wants in.
i think this would benifit the games industry greatly and improve overal profits……. but we all can live in hope….!!!!!!!!!!

There is only one thing missing from this game, and that is custom soundtrack support. Why didn’t you guys include that? Is it something you might think about patching in to the game at a later date perhaps? It would be awesome if you did as I am not a huge fan of the music choice in Dirt 3. I much rather prefer Dirt 2´s soundtrack.

Well i rushed out yesterday morning 2 geth DIRT 3 only 2 find i cant play online cause of the bloody VIP code thats DIRT 3 and SHIFT 2 now. Stop the bloody codes plz if we buy the game we should be able 2 play the game without putting them codes in.
BTW……DIRT 2 was 1 hell of a game at the end when i seen the Colin Mcrae video give me a tear in the eye. Seen him drive many times in real life. I was a bit gutted that codemasters didnt make WRC.
PS……Codemasters can we get Colin Mcrae HD classics from the PS 1 and 2 plz? They was the best rally games of all time.

@31
Question: How is it “greedy” to want to be paid for a product you make?
Answer: They’ve already been paid for the product by every single person who purchased a copy new. It’s being greedy to expect further payments every time the game changes hands in the future. The end.

I love the game and I’ve played a fair bit of it but I don’t think I want to play any more until I can get the two codes I have activated. Hopefully it’ll only be a few more days until the store is back up.
Now I’d like to see Codemasters finally acquire the WRC license so we get a modern official rally game rather than another WRC 2010.

i love codie’s race game’s , but i realy HATE that Codie is now jumping on the bandwagon of E.A and charging 10 bucks for online if you buy the game second hand ! What gives you the right to charge money for a product after it has been sold ?
Whats next ? the cable guy comming to charge me extra for buying a second hand tv ? or if i move to another house, i have to pay extra to get a tv subscription ?
because that’s where it’s going !! I , for one will NOT stand for it and gamers should boycot this action from publishers .
But ofcourse the majority of you will just pay for it and be suprised and complain later why no one stopped it !

Posted on 25 May, 2011 at 4:21 pm by HazelAM
as codemasters are effectively making the online mode a paid for element of the game, they now have a responsibility to their customers.
why are they shirking that responsibility?
netherrealm studios chose to use an online pass, but at least they’re honouring their responsibility to their customers but waiving the need for the pass until the store comes back.
it says a lot about how codemasters view their customers that they seem to have no intention to do the same, they seem content to let you sit without a part of the game you paid for until god knows when.
i hope people remember that when the next codemasters title is released.

Can we use the PS3 sixaxis function to steer in Dirt 3? If not then why not because I have a permanent back injury so can’t sit and use steering wheels and the only one which looked like I could use while lying on my back is not being made any more by Logitech. Using the left stick to turn in driving games is tedious.

Good luck with your online pass.

to all those who think these online passes are ok. i buy a game, dvd, cd or bluray, its mine full stop i am legally entitled to sell or trade said product. the devs have already been paid they have no right to charge again for the same item.
as everyone seems to agree with these passes what happens when they decide 10 pound is not enough and charge everyone a monthly rate per game for so called server maitenace. it will happen.
plus trading games has been around since i was kid, this is not a new thing, the games industry managed fine for twenty years.

i think any addon to games should be fixed to size of content to be more fair all round. i remember paying for one pack for red dead redemption £7.99 and was mad as hell when saw was only 52mb in size.
you done a first class job on tracks and cars and driving is much better well done for that. sadly for me i hate all these dc type things you insist in putting in as part of the game. they are just so repetitive in the hope you do it perfect 1 time is just boring. i like to get trophys if can but these things put me right of buying any more race games.
i would like to ask how you and how long you guys test games for glitches before release as games seem to be getting worse in general? i did have friends years ago that tested games, they where given like 1 level and played it solid for a month and wrote down all the bugs to fix. now everything seems to be mended as we play if we are lucky. T he glitches spoil any race game like dirt 2 when they can do laps in 10 seconds. no point racing that track after that. would be nice to see their times removed as well as that ruins the point of time trials as well.
Sorry for the rant but one of your dc challenges just wound me up and quit in disgust ha ha.

Hi Sony.
My first time blogging on here.
Obviously I have had a close eye on updates with the downtime. I am not one to moan about it. “At the end of the day it’s free, and theres more to life.”
But just would like to ask a question. I just brought Dirt 3, (And I am liking it) it needs a passcode which we can not use because the store down, I know you can not tell us when the store is back up, but do you have any idea if this is going to be removed? because I am itching to play it online.
However today is Utd so I will have a Bud in my hand whilst watching the footy. If i could get a reply that would be great.. Cheers
