The next generation portable device that we have been calling NGP for the last few months has a new name. Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai took to the stage at the E3 press conference in Los Angeles to confirm that the final name is PlayStation Vita and that it will retail at €249 and €299 for the Wi-fi and 3G & Wi-fi models respectively.
That wasn’t the only highlight of a press conference packed with new games, crowd-pleasing live demos and surprise announcements.
This time last year, Naughty Dog wowed us with that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves set-piece with Drake fighting an armed helicopter, and this year they brought a new level from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception that pits our untucked hero against a squad of enemies on a sinking ship. They also brought this stunning trailer that the audience was lucky enough to see in 3D and on a screen bigger than any bus I’ve seen.
Marcus Smith of Insomniac Games was also on-stage to play through a never before seen section of Resistance 3 taking place in St. Louis that sees Capelli join forces with the Remnant, a group of rebels, to take out a dropship.
We love to see new games announced at E3 and there was an especially excited whoop when Sly Raccoon slinked onto the screen in the teaser trailer for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time on PS3.
Dust 514 is another brand new title; a PS3 exclusive from CCP that syncs up with the hit MMO EVE online. Dust 514 is compatible with PlayStation Move, will have its own dedicated PlayStation Home space and will also have some kind of link-up with PS Vita.
PlayStation Move fans can also look forward to Medieval Moves, an action adventure from the creators of Sports Champions that features intuitive motion control in a fantasy world filled with enemies and contextual puzzles. Sticking with fantasy settings, Ruin was debuted, an action MMO on PS Vita and PS3 that allows the player to save their game on one system and pick up exactly where they left off on the other – a brilliant example of how your PS3 and PS Vita will work together.
Of course, PlayStation Vita was what many came to see and they were spoilt with an extensive line-up of games – it was revealed that more than 80 games are currently in development for the handheld.
One of the biggest surprises was the arrival of Yoshinori Ono to present a playable version of Street Fighter X Tekken on PS Vita, which includes an unexpected guest character: Cole McGrath from the inFamous series.
The press conference is just one part of E3 and we are going to be spending the rest of the week on the show floor filming a live video broadcast featuring interviews, banter and game demos; check it out here on the PlayStation.Blog over the next three days.
Hope you enjoyed this year’s announcements – there were many more than I’ve listed here. We always enjoy reading your feedback so tell us what you think in the comments and I’ll jump in tomorrow morning.
Time to watch Jane’s Addiction…

Re: the pronunciation
It’s vee-ta, no question about it. That’s how the Italian word for “life” – which gives the console its name (as confirmed by Hirai) – is pronounced.
The bad news is that, contrary to what Kaz announced, it probably won’t be released worldwide by the end of 2011. Our friend Tretton – old buddy, old Jack – just told Gametrailers that the console would be released by the end of the *fiscal* year, i.e. March 2012.
Way to put a damper on things…
Somebody should have told Kaz before he went and made promises on stage.

Well, it sure sucks to be a Playstation owner at the moment…
Too many exclusives and not enough time in the day…

PS Vita is a really crappy name.
It also irritates me you cant play UMD’s on it. NO way in HELL am payinf £29.99 for a UMD, to play it now, then paying that much again, at christmas or whenever the hell it’ll be released to play it on the Rita. Erm Vita.
I’ll get it, but I’ll be keeping my current PSP.

Hey playstation.
That was a great show.
Just curious about something and hope you can answer it for me….
If the Playstation Vita is going to have cross-chat does that mean the ps3 will get it too at some point because it doesn’t seem fair if the Vita has it and not the ps3….
Thanks and I like the nave Vita…. It’s different.

Still waiting for a response to my query:
I understand you can download PSP games from the PS store on to the Vita. Does the Vita have any internal storage to house these downloads? What about storage expansion, what memory card type and size is supported please?
Thanks

PLEASE reply on this! Why are you able to build a cross game chat for ps vita but not for ps3?? ps3 is almost out for 5 years and i finally want to be able to chat with my friends without playing the same game. Its really annoying that you have to leave the game or write text messages for hours if u want to stay in contact with your friends. I guess many psn users wanted to see this feature on ps3 and are upset that you only announced it for vita. Would be nice to get an answer on this topic.
greets takti
ps: sorry for my horrible english.

I love the name personally! And surely more Latin is never a bad thing. ;D I was excited for the system already, but all these trailers are getting me even more hyped. The PSV just looks so promising, and I can’t wait for the new Uncharted games on both systems.
Thanks for the coverage!

hi just wondering with the games that you buy in stores, how many times can you install the games and does it have to be on the same console or console with you psn ID? and can you give an official price for the console in GBP or even a rough estimate

Sorry to say, but “PlayStation Vita” is the most ridiculous name ever… If I didn’t know what the device was capable of and/or wasn’t already a PSP (PlayStation Portable) user, I’d quite literally laugh at anyone suggesting a “PlayStation Vita” to me!
Honestly, you should go back to the drawing board prior to release, ’cause the name “PlayStation Vita” just doesn’t cut it…
