If you’ve been reading PlayStation.Blog EU for a while then you might remember a series of posts called The Friday Debate. The idea was simple: I’d post an open-ended question and you fine folk would speak your brains in the comments.
For months this post has roamed the Mojave Desert, searching for new ideas and chewing a variety of fats to test them for the PlayStation.Blog community palate. Now it’s back with a name change and new trick up its sleeve: prizes!
The most insightful, interesting and/or amusing comments will win their authors a voucher code for a game or service, depending on what I’m able to blag that week.
To get things started, tell me this:
If you could work for any game developer in the world, who would it be, what kind of game would you create and why?
This week I have 15 voucher codes for Gatling Gears to give away, courtesy of EA, so get commenting over the weekend and our independent judge will pick the winners on Monday morning. The winners will receive their voucher code via private message on the official PlayStation Forums. For those of you that have never been to our forums, you just need to log in once using your PSN ID to enable private messaging. You could do it now or wait until Monday lunchtime(ish) when I will respond to the winning comments in this very post.
Best of luck and remember that enlightenment and the noble gift of conversation are the real prizes here. (I’m 99% certain it was HazelAM that suggested this topic some time ago, so thanks for that.)
Competition terms and conditions.

i would work for naughty dog, i would create an action/adventure/platform game which most probably a jak and daxter game for the ps3 because i enjoy action/adventure/platform games like jak and daxter, i also know loads of jak and daxter fans would really enjoy playing a new jak and daxter game on the ps3.

Would have to be Team Ico or thatgamecompany as they make games that are orignal, imaginative, emotional and make the Sony console stand out as different and ahead of the competition. As for the game I would like to make. Something which would mix the ideas of Ico (story and emotion) and Braid with it’s time manipulation and puzzle solving.

i would work for level5 and make an huge jrpg. lots of quest beautifull armoury and weapons. amazing magic spells and bosses so terrifying that you would pee in your pants. there would also be an online aspect. where you can make friends to play with and trade items with. you gather with your mates in an ancient city and take quest from the quest board or from the major in the town. the online aspect would also be story driven so that you got a point for playing. it would be an awesome game and especially in japan and hopefully in europe. i don’t know the name of the game yet but believe me if the game really became published it would kick ass and change the future of (online)games

If i was a dev/publisher i would wanted sony to drop the store costs for us devs, i would expected in a free market to have access to all store region.
including the EU how we suppose to make money, we devs wanted imports to go on the EU store, imports+high demand=more money.
that my thought as a dev. :/

Hmm well I would have said Team Bondi but after the recent news articles about all the over time they forced their staff to work I think i’ll give them a miss lol.
My second choice would be Ninja Theory because of their attention to the story. The type of game I would like to make is a Hack’n Slash. I would have it set in the after life but instead of health bars you’d have defense bars.
So when you and an enemy would engage in combat your weapons would clash not like how it is now with just the weapons hitting the body until their health is gone. Then you could get great choreographed sequenses like you’d noramlly see in the cutscenes. But once the defense bar is low enough you’d then strike the killing blow. Really you could do the same for gun fights. Instead of a health bar you have a luck bar which shows how many bullets can miss you. I think thats my biggest gripe with games is like how many bullets can Nathan Drake take before he dies, yet in a cut scene a character only has to shoot him once and he’s out.
As for story elements… thats why I picked NT they can come up with that part lol.

If I could work for any game developer in the world, I would work for Double Fine. They have released incredibly fresh, original, unique and innovative downloadable games in the last year. This is a place where the creative team is really expressing itself with the creation of unique worlds and they take risks by doing things that have never been done before.
Costume Quest was a charming and fresh take on the RPG genre. They released a game that the whole family can play.
Stacking had a unique concept and it worked surprisingly well.
I can’t wait to see what Double Fine is doing next. I’m sure the team have a lot of incredible ideas that will continue to surprise us in the months to come.

ok this is cool
i would work for ROCKSTAR GAMES and i would create a game that would be around the Napoleonic Wars era, which would be a sandbox free roam game you would play as a number of diffrent factions i.e the french, spanish & the english of course.
and as for why..
A) a Napoleonic Wars game has NEVER been done
B) it’s a great subject to base a game on
C)people would acually learn about there history
i meen how cool would it be to RIP,SPIT,TAP FIRE!
translation many soldier’s were to be able to fire 3 SHOTS PER MIN. (yes 3!)
to do this they were to RIP (tear gun shot sachet)
SPIT (spit shot into the rifling of gun)
TAP (hit the stock of rifle to secure shot at the rifling end)

I would work for a Nintendo studio. I like Nintendo ethos and philosophy, unlike most other companies – Nintendo values their employees and treats them as assets and their CEO is one of the lowest paid in the industry despite massive profits lately. They also save their money for a rainy day.
They also do not milk a franchise [Call of Duty comes to mind] – games are done well and they bring something new to the table. They simple use their IP to market the game. Long term damage to an IP once being over utilised is impossible to overturn, I think Duke Nukem Forever is a case where they probably have caused more damage than good by releasing the game at all.
I would certainly create a new Zelda game. I have always loved the soul that the game provides and I greatly think that is due to the magnificent soundtrack that Nintendo incorporate and would love to see more companies see how great games can be with a iconic soundtrack within it.

Working as a video game journalist, I’ve seen several companies from other sides than most people and from what I’ve experienced, I’d really like to work with either Sony, EA og Ubisoft and specifically on the concept/story writing sides of things. I love writing; thinking up interesting game concepts and working on interesting stories to go along with them.
My favorite genres have always been roleplaying games and action/adventure titles, so I’d most definitely want to work on either of those genres. Final Fantasy VII and Uncharted 1-2 come to mind as inspiring and high goals to achieve for me personally.

Continued…
You only have to see what impact Nintendo has on a company to see the impact on creativity it provides.
Rare was a brilliant game studio before going to Microsoft and that shows something which every company should learn from.

Sony WWS would be the place to be. At the forefront of cutting edge gaming and innovation. It might sound cliche but considering the things we don’t know being worked on internally by Sony’s internal studios and considering whats been done by them it would be great. If you look at the games like LBP, GOW3 and many other PS3 exclusive developed in house and the best is still yet too come, which would make for a great place to be a part of.
As for would i would do, I would look at developing more applications including social interfaces. I’d also love to take the play create share ethos to the popular FPS genre. Could you imagine it, the possibility would be endless creating a different unique experience for ever player by allowing them to create weapons maps mods game modes etc and sharing them accross PSN. It would be truely unique to the genre.

I would work for a company such as Dice and make a first person game for youngsters. This game would have to be flying a kite, which all kids love to do in the summer, but this could be also done in the winter now. Basically the mechanics would work that you use the motion sensor in the controller to control the kite, the longer it is in the air the more points you gain, every so often a huge gust of wind makes your kite hard to control and also loss of wind makes it fall to the ground. Using the controller you shake up and down and this makes your character run to gain air on your kite. This game would also work with the playstation move with trophy support.
The reason I would do this game is basically as kids don’t have many games at the minute which interact with the PS Move and everyone seems to have forgotten about the motion sensor in the dualshock 3. Also first person games seem to be a big hit with shooters and Mirrors Edge.

I would like to work for EA!
I wouldn’t really create a game as such, but a compilation of their greatest games from various formats, like the SEGA Megadrive Collection.
I believe there has been something similar for the PSP but this would be bigger, with Trophy support + extras like game posters at the time & interviews etc. A bit like what Backbone did but better!!
The games would contain the following:
The Aquatic Games, Blades of Vengeance, B.O.B, Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Road Rash 1-3, harley’s humongous adventure, Haunting (Polterguy), The immortal, James Pond 1-3, The killing Game show, Loyus Challenge 1 & 2, Mutant League Footbal & Hockey, Populous 1 & 2, Powermonger, Risky Woods, Rolo to the Rescue, Shadow of the Beast 1-3, Skate or Die, Sword of Sodan, Syndicate, Themepark, Virtual Pinball, Worms, Zany Golf to name a few!!

Tough question. When I was younger and Warcraft 2 was released, I always imagined how fun it would be to work at Blizzard, but now when they just create expansions for a dull MMO, I actually couldn’t care less (yeah sure, there’s SC2 E2 and Diablo 3 in the horizon, but so is yet another MMO).
I think I’d like to work for either Sucker Punch Productions or Naughty Dog, mainly cause they’ve created some of my favorite games (Sly/Infamous/Uncharted).
Also it’d have to be third person game, as I’m not too fond of FPS.
As for a game I’d like to create, maybe a comic like (Infamous’ish) adventure game (Uncharted’ish) of some sort, in space! Not to say it should play and look exactly like Uncharted or Infamous, as it obviously wouldn’t if it was located in Space. But I think I’d like a treasure hunters theme in space environments, with a couple of special abilities that was a bit over-the-top
The reason why is because I think there’s a lack of that type of titles (that I know of), and I can imagine that being fun. I can imagine blasting aliens to get some long forgotten treasure etc.

I would work for Bethesda and create an open-world RPG Zombie game. The player would have access to a plethora of guns and weapons which could be either found out in the enviroment or purchased at a gun launderer. The overall objective of the game would be to find out what caused the zombie outbreak and find how to stop whatever’s spreading it. The player would also be able to carry out over 100 unique side quests which would aid you in finding out what caused the outbreak, or help you deal with the zombies attacking you as you roam around the map.
The game could also be taken online, featuring 4 player online co-op to take on the zombies with your friends, this would benefit your singleplayer game because you would gain money and credits to purchase better weapons from the gun launderers.

I would love to work on a Master of the Universe Brawler in the veins of Castle Crashers, or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
Since THQ is holding the publishing rights now, I would go to VIGIL ENTERTAINMENT (a studio under THQ), because I love the art style og Joe Mad and this young team delivered on DARKSIDERS (on of my first PS3 games and the one that made me buy a PS3 to begin with!)
It also could be two player co-op with an enticing story, because there is also She-Ra, an equal to He-Man.
There are so many ideas and Masters of the Universe was THE cartoon series of my childhood.
I would love to create that game, because I’m burstin’ with ideas right now… there is so much you could do with that franchise and I would love to see my childhood shine again!

I’d love to work for IO Interactive, imagine how much fun it is going in every day to hear about the crazy ideas they have for ways to kill in Hitman, and I’m sure I could probably think up a few ways to make Hitman even more the better game, and I’d love to create a Hitman for the PSVita.
Though I’d be worried about playing it on and about, would have to keep quiet as I won’t want to be cheering about killing a clown with a poisoned donut :p.

I would like to work with Guerilla Games, proposing them a new ambitious franchise which will use all performances of the PS3 to make that game realistic, deep, long with an awesome story and universe that might be recorded in PlayStation’s family.
A game that will combine several types of gameplay, several types of environments to have a maximum of diversity.

I would like to work with Thatgamecompany, because they are very good at creating non-combat games. Thatgamecompany has mastered immersion to the extent people don’t need a challenge to continue, and I would love to learn from them.
The game I would like to create with Thatgamecompany takes place in a valley. That means a lot of winding roads, trees and birds. You would play as some kind of spirit. The idea is that you can hitchhike across the valley. You can assume control over most of the objects in the valley.
For example, you start out occupying an eagle high above the valley. You are experiencing the valley through his eyes. When you dive down to a motorcyclist, you can take his place and experience the freedom of the motorcyclist, cruising the roads on the mountain. Power lines and clouds could also be possessed.
It would be a game with different areas to explore. You can unlock the next area when you have found all the different beings, and brightened their day. The motorcyclist, for example, starts out sulky, and keeps following the rotunda. When you take control of him, and lead him to the highest road on the mountain, he will be happy.

Sounds very artsy! Have a code for Gatling Gears.

Posted on 15 July, 2011 at 3:56 pm by enormhi
Uhm.. Lets see. I guess ‘Thatgamecompany’ (it’s one word, right?), just because they make very different and original games. There are only a few studio’s doing something new. A lot of studio’s use already existing idea’s. With Thatgamecompany it’s totaly different. I had never seen a game like Fl0w. Or a game where you play the wind to go along flowers to pick up there petals and colour in the landscape. And with the upcoming Journey, they are doing something ‘different’ all over again.
I haven’t even talked about a concept for a game, but I’m very convinced that Jenova Chen can think about something which is going to be very intuitive and original. I would be happy to follow his mind!

Yay its back!
I would work for rockstar, but I would base the game around where I live (Portsmouth) it would be a open world GTA type game. But you would have ultimate freedom, every building would be accessible & the map would be 20 miles big. I would make this game because us Portsmouth people always get missed out on big things & would be awesome to have a game based on where I live.

Namco & bring a new Point Blank game out.
Once you acheive certain goals & objectives you unlock the previous games too!!
When I first owned my PS1 I loved the Point Blank games & saved alot of money owning them, as I spent alot on the Arcade machines!

sensible soccer, cannon fodder 1,2 remade in HD and made as a PSN download, i’d toally buy them in a heartbeat. lol
Another thing i would think of creating is something to bring music creation tools back to playstation. I used to spend days at a time on Music Generator by codemasters and it was a blast once you got your head around it. Especially giving the possibilitys these days with the PSN’s netwroking tools.
It’d be pretty cool to bring something like Ejay (cause it’s dead simple to use) to PS3 with the potential to incease sample database through dlc. It would be cool to be able to upload those tracks created through it to a PSN type radio stream and also for the creator to be able to then sell the track via a simular service to the RBN.
(yes i’m aware PJ lifelike does allow you to broadcast your creations, but they are done so annonamously this would be differnt)

@catkiller i’d also by an upto date point blank game that used the move and full support. Namco need to make that happen it’s been so long. Seen as your looking at bringing back ps1 classics to the next generation of gamers, add parrapa the rapper and bishi bashi special to that list. lol

This is quite a difficult question for me.
I would create a comic stylized action rpg (something close to comix zone, but quite different) that would have the main hero develop powers based in emotional responses on various situations because I think the action rpg genre is one that has space to grow because the way the action can be achieved and the elements of rpg that can be integrated (Bioshock is a good example of an action rpg that has first person shooter as it’s action means and the plasmids and adam as rpg elements). This is the easy part of the question.
The hard part is to choose one developer, I like so many developers for different reasons, Naughty Dog for their commitment to surpass themselves, thatgamecompany for the unique games they make, Bioware for their talent to create universes and great rpgs and the list goes on and on. But if I have to choose one, I choose the Irrational Games as the developer to work with, because they have these podcasts about their creative process and they also talk about the team and it seems like a really nice place to work and their commitment to make a great game above all else and not stuff it with features that aren’t needed is something I respect.

It would be a tough decision between Naughty Dog and Insomniac. Its about time there was a proper ps3 Jak/Ratchet/Clank/Daxter crossover. PS Move Heroes just isn’t the epic crossover platform action game we all want.

I already have Bishi Bashi Special when it was 1st released but it was removed from the store I believe. I don’t know why it was removed but i’m sure if their was enough demand SONY would look into releasing it again.
I still have the Parappa & Fear Effects, Doom + Final Doom, Duke Nukem etc!! They all work perfectly fine on my PS3 too!
Some of the Classics on the store at the moment are dreadful imo & more, what I would call Classics need to appear!!
You can still pick up alot of PS1 classics form Ebay that will still work on any PS3 as it’s mainly the PS2 titles that don’e work!!
Croc anyone?

I’d work for Polyphony Digital and make a FPS game.
Strange? Yeah, but that would be the point. I would imagine these guys had something new to a genre which so many love but is full of games similiar to eachother.
Also PD’s attention to detail is beyond any other developer out there so I would imagine just the guns being super realistic, eg. the engines/other tiny parts in GT 5.

oh i knew what you meant catkiller, i was just refering to you bringing them bang update in terms of gameplay, and graphics and bring them kicking and screaming into the 21st century with your own spin on it. Could you imagine parappa the rapper game where you used the move and camera to follow the move. Kick punch block, it would be awesome. Chroc would also be a good platform game to bring back. the ps3 could certainly benefit from more platformers.
Fear Effect would be great i’m still shocked it’s not continued through the ps2 era and onto ps3 as i remember them being hugely popular games.
