Hi All,
This is Dan McDonald, Producer at Criterion Games. By now you should have heard about the new game from our studio, Burnout CRASH! and I am sure some of you are scratching your heads a little wondering what we have been up to… well let me tell you… Burnout CRASH! is a spin off from our much loved Burnout series but this time focusing solely on the Crash Mode gameplay which you may remember from previous Burnout games.
A lot of games take themselves too seriously, sometimes all you really need is to just kick back, relax and blow stuff up. With that in mind we designed Burnout CRASH! with a tongue in cheek style, harking back to the arcades we all used to hang around in. Our inspirations were manic Pinball gameplay, over the top Game Show style presentation, all tied up with our favourite music tracks from yesterday.
But I hear you ask, “I loved the original crash modes, will I like this?” But of course! We have kept the spirit of the original Crash mode alive, with its simple gameplay of drive into a junction and smash as much traffic as you can – layered with deeper puzzle elements to work out the highest scoring strategies. The perfect game to sit on the sofa passing the pad back and forth with your friends, showing action that is as fun to watch as it is to play.
Looking back at previous versions of Crash mode, probably the single biggest request from our fans was to keep the crash going for longer… so that’s the first thing we did, giving you much more than the single crashbreaker of old. This in turn lead to many more scoring opportunities and craziness, so just a like a pinball table it’s easy to play but you need to know your stuff to rack up the really big scores. As well as the standard scoring methods of smashing traffic and multipliers, we have made all of the buildings destroyable, get smash chains from hitting street furniture, added lots of different skillshots, explosion combos and many more crazy new features. Some of which help rack up your score such as the Lightning storm and some of which get in the way like the Bulldozer clearly a path for other cars to escape through.
Of course, this being Criterion we couldn’t leave out Autolog, as first seen in our last hit game Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Autolog adds that essential element of personalisation to Burnout CRASH!, as your high score tables (Crashwalls) will only be populated with your friends scores.
We still have the Autolog staples of Recommends based on what your friends have been doing, with Friends Recommendations to help build up your PSN friends list.
We’ve also taken the social competition one step further with the new Autolog Challenges. This is a much more direct mode of play where you can select any of your PSN friends and challenge them to a one on one challenge. You each get one go on a level, with the winner taking the cup. Sounds simple but it works a treat… I have been battling some of the other guys in the studio for some time now, the trash talking alone is gold (Doug I am coming for you)! And of course one of the Trophies is for beating a friend 3 times in a row in Autolog Challenges.
If you like having pure mindless fun, then come and check out Burnout CRASH! out now on PSN £7.99 / €9.99

Wow Criterion Games actually made this. Hang your heads in shame boys and tell EA to go eat dog food if they ever make you make a game like this again.

I’ll pass & wait for a proper entry into the burnout franchise, this just smacks of an iPhone/iPad game.

This looks different. So I might consider buying it.
Different, huh? People complaining about a Burnout game being different, and yet the same people complain about Call Of Duty being the same every year. Give them the world, they still want more!

Please Criterion, go back to the old burnouts.. This doesn’t interest me in the slightest and I didn’t really like Paradise either because of the open world.. I miss the days of Burnout 2, one of my favorite racegames

Seems like this game is getting really mixed responses. I’ve been eagerly waiting for this game ever since the Quick Look on GiantBomb. Maybe people just need to try it out to get what it’s all about, or maybe I can appreciate it because I’m ‘old’ enough to remember when games were about high scores rather than completion.
I’m not sure I’ll be able to find anyone to pass the controller to, but I do see myself spending some late hours with this game, just going for high scores.

I LOVED the Crash mode in Burnout 3, but it has never been quite as good since… I am intrigued by this though! I hated the “swingometer” from Burnout 4… the fun in B3 was waiting for the strategic moment before hitting the accelerate… oh, how I’d love to see a Burnout HD collection, just for B3 if nothing else! It had the best soundtrack too. I loved that game so, so much. The others have all been great but for pure arcade fun, B3 was the pinnacle.
I have faith in Criterion, you guys & gals make amazing games, so ignore the trolls above… they should be punished for such insubordination!

PSN is down for at least one hour and no comment on that?
New store content is quite obsolete if you can’t enter the store…

Will try the trial (when PSN is back) but hope you guys are working on a proper follow up to Paradise, that game is still awesome. Even a new BSI style add-on would be great.

Hi Dan, I played a demo of said game earlier and it was a lot of fun. So consider me sold on this nice new casual take on Burnout – even if a raging hurricane does give the non-player cars little chance to keep their insurance cost low

Well from what I’ve ben reading this was originally a Wii game that then got bumped to the real consoles. But the controls seem to be a bit of an issue and the impression is wait for the Ipad version.

Please release all 5 PS2 Burnout games within a HD collection!
It has to inlude all 5 though & I would happily pay £39.99
Burnout, Burnout 2: Point of impact, Burnout 3: Takedown, Burnout Revenge, Burnout Dominator & you could throw in Burnout Legends as a Bonus by completing all the titles!
PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE IT HAPPEN

Played the US demo last night, and was sorely disappointed. I really wanted to enjoy it despite the bad press. I found it incredibly basic, and the constantly increasing Crashbreaker took away the skill factor. What I loved about the old Crash modes was determining the best “Point of Impact”, an almost tactical decision to gauge the speed and direction of approach, what car to hit first etc. On the Burnout Crash demo, you only steer the car… no accelerator control. There’s very few cars to hit either, not like the busy junctions of old, afterwards its just a case of exploding as many times as you can to stop cars driving past. Maybe I’ve missed the point, but like others i’d much rather have a revamped 3D Crash mode, or a HD Collection (Burnout 2 wad my personal favorite). However I’ve read Alex Ward stating that no further Burnout releases are planned which is a real shame.

The graphics look a bit poor for a new game although there is a certain GTA style retro charm. I hope the gameplay is good and lives up the old crash junctions, why they ever changed those I will never know.
Certainly a try-before-you-buy though.

This is not what I want from a Burnout game.
Lets get back to Paradise!

I was hyped to see a new burnout, and even better its solely aimed at crash mode (which is about the only time my wife will play on the playstation). But was then slightly disappointed to see its some weird style Burnout! I’ll download it and give it ago still, and knowing the studio it will still be great!

I know is not a classical burnout game but after download the demo I have to say that is fun and 8 quid… Worth the money purchased 2 min after play demo.
Congratulations criterium
One suggestion: a burnout game with the frostbite 2 destruction engine, hmm possible??

One of my favourite things about the burnout series is the great soundtracks? Does this also have real tracks from bands/artists?
