Following this morning’s reports from Cern that subatomic particles called neutrinos have broken the speed of light, this weekend’s debate focuses on the fascinating world of science or, more specifically, science fiction.
Science fiction has provided fertile ground for video game creators over the years, influencing storytelling and design. All the way back to Spacewar! in 1961 people have been playing depictions of alien invasions and intergalactic conflicts. Racing to the modern day, we’ve seen genetic cloning and nuclear mecha in the Metal Gear Solid Series; body modifications, as seen in Deus Ex; the rise of a sport based on the development of anti-gravity vehicles in WipEout; a man that can heal bullet wounds by leaning against walls in The Getaway; and much, much more.
My question to you is:
Which fictional scientific or technological discoveries in games do you think will become reality? Or, can you explain an example of it already happening?
It’s a tough one this week so grow a beard and get stroking. The prize is worth it though: I’ve got 15 voucher codes for the beautiful PSN god game From Dust, courtesy of Ubisoft. As usual, the 15 most interesting comments will be chosen by our independent judge and the vouchers will be sent via private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com on Monday.
Best of luck!

To bridge the technological gap between travelling by using vehicles and full-on teleportation (which will probably be a few years away). The streets will be filled with conveyor belts giving you the option of walking off of your front driveway, onto a conveyor belt, down the road…step off onto another….Providing a quick,easy,eco-friendly(these are solar powered)way to travel to your everyday destinations.

I suppose we already have them at airports and train stations. You’ve been chosen to get a voucher code for From Dust – check your private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com later today.

Cybernetics are slowly becoming reality. Our cardiac pacemakers or cochlear implants are an example of how we use machines as a replacement. And our slow and painful progress in biotics shows that augmentations like those in Deus Ex or Star Wars are just a matter of time. We just need to solve the issue of supplying energy to the artificial limb and find a way to control its more complex movements.
Our state of the art biotic limbs are using sensors to read the myoelectric impulses from a particular nerve in the stump, so moving the sensor by even a few milimeters will render the whole system useless. Although experiments on Rhesus monkeys show us that it is possible to control robotic arms with probes inserted into the motor cortex.
So yeah, we’re getting there.

space stations and space travel like on mass effect 2 will become reality some time in the future weve already gone to the moon quite a bit into the future all our descendants will own spaceships and travel from planet to planet

From the Mass Effect games, an Onmi tool, the ability to bring up a holographic screen and keyboard on your arm and pay your credit card bills, check the news and request a taxi would just be awesome

Invisibility or more specifically cloaking devices, there have been great advancements in this area in the scientific world. There are materials called metamaterials that can bend light the “wrong” way in three dimensions using negative refraction. Using these metamaterials it is possible to bend light around an object and then reconnect it on the other side of the object, kind of like water flowing around a large rock in a steam, making the object appear to be invisible. So in the future you may have cloaking devices such as the ones used in many FPS’s like Deus Ex, Resistance 3 and other games.

I have read about this technology too (and not just in Harry Potter). A voucher code is coming your way.

PART 1: Possible Future Advancement in Body Augmentation:
Augmentations are in the works that allow humans to push the boundaries of human capability to unseen lengths, people will soon be able to augment their bodies in extreme facets that will change the fundamental way in which the world is interacted with.
National labs funded by the Department of Energy have created a third generation ‘artificial retina’ for the blind that allows them to see at extremely low resolutions, proving that artificial retinas can partially restore sight. It is the hopes of this second sight project that in the next decade, sight can be restored to the blind that has resolutions similar to that of a computer screen. There is also much work being done in exoskeletons, a device that is worn outside of the body that allows for augmented and increased strength, or even allow partial paraplegics to have motion again.
10
Posted on 23 September, 2011 at 3:41 pm by Catkiller1
Part 2:
Defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin have very promising prototypes that have already been field-tested and show great promise, check out the video here. A company in Japan is already renting out their primitive exoskeletons for $2300 a month, and in a bit of savage irony, the company is named Cyberdyne.
So some of the elements to Deus Ex Human Revolution are becoming a reality & in another say 10-20 years I think we’ll see a huge step up as wounded military soldiers are currently testing augmentations on lost limbs etc!

Not exactly the same, but the Animus from the Assassin’s Creed series as a machine to read brainwaves and visualize them. In short, to see what someone is dreaming, accessing their memory. Their have been breakthroughs as of late in reading different areas of the brain, meaning that if the data could be decoded using a very fast computer, we can enter that unknown territory. The fiction of Assassin’s Creed’s ancestral memories will probably not come true, though.
The pip-boy from the fallout series will probably emerge as some kind of arm-tablet gimmick, but that’s not really an invention.

Would you really want to see your dreams? Maybe I’m too suspicious but can too much access to the unconscious area of the psyche could be dangerous. Either way, a voucher code for From Dust is heading your way.

Holographic / 3D display. This is pretty mental and I guess basically the 3D part is pretty much covered but the holographic bit as seen in Enslaved: Odyssey To The West where Trip uses a futuristic device (a mechanical dragonfly camera device) to hack doors and control electronics. Already seen in many movies I think this could be one of the things we could see pretty soon.
In Enslaved: http://goo.gl/Pg7Xr Soz couldn’t find a good clip that went directly to an in game example – best i could find

I really liked that they tied the robots in Deus Ex in with the ones that exist in reality.
There’s probably some specific name for the prototype I’m thinking about, but you know, the spider-looking one?
In short, robots is on the rise!

I would have to go with bipedal tanks or as I like to call them Metal… Gear? Darpa are already working on quadrupedal pack robots known as BigDog and LittleDog. They’re designed to carry heavey equipment into battle leaving the soilders free to fight. This with future advancments we’ll make would hopefully lead to Metal Gears being made, hopefully not under the command of a crazy AI satalite.

I’m dreaming of a game with an online free roam where u can explore the whole galaxy and land on other planets on which u can find some quests to lvl. up or explore the planet with other players online…now, its obvious this game’s size would be a “little” big but someday PS4 will arrive…the games these days have visually expanded their horizons and i cant even amagine better graphics so i can tell there is a lot of hard work behind the curtains…the evolution is underway.

I am for nanomachines and nanotechnology.
The Metal Gear Solid series has always been an incredible source of ideas for the potential applications of this technology and even if we won’t see nanomachines that can heal every wound and make you almost immortal, the potential applications of this technology are enormous.
Also we don’t need to wait for the future because at today nanotechnologies are a reality and will surely be the next frontier in many fields: energy, medical science, communications, military, alimentation, etc..

Damnit! I just shaved my beard off last week! Surprising how much respect I lost and now I can’t think properly for lack of appropriate strokage.
I’m impressed there was a reference to The Getaway!
Anywho, transforming machines for sure! Maybe not soon but there’s no way somebody’s going to resist building them. Not thinking so much Transformers as I am Starhawk. See that beast in the trailer!? It’ll be too much fun (if we ignore the military use for a second) to deny developing. Heck, I’m going to the shed and start building now!

Nanomahines, exoskeleton, cyber-augmentation style stuff from Metal Gear Solid and Deus Ex would be the most interesting one right now imo. It’d be awesome to see technology progress to that level, there’s plenty of research into exoskeleton style tech to allow paraplegics to walk (like eLegs – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcM0ruq28dc ) which is fantastic, in the future having technology that can stimulate muscles electronically (and whatever else) or just the purely mechanical to make people physically more capable is an area up for debate for a lot of people but having worked with disabled people previously I think any kind of advancements that lead to making life easier like that would be brilliant, and having Solidus Snake style exoskeletons and Doctor Otopus style mechanical octopus arms would be even better!
I’d be more interested in Zone of the Enders style flyring robots though, so long as they can build them without the cockpit being located in the robot crotch area… that was a pretty weird move by Shinkawa and Kojima, lol.

The Lawgiver, Judge Dredd’s gun that reads the palm-print of the user and only fires for the designated user has been around for a number of years now (as well as the ps1 Judge Dredd game btw!). Faster than light travel is a step closer after today’s announcement by CERN (almost every sci-fi game has this!), although how to get around the problem of time dilation could prove tricky, getting off a space-ship to find your grandchildren are now older than you could be awkward!

One example of technological discoveries I think will happen:
- Powered Armour Suits from Section 8 / Section 8 Prejudice. Specifically an armoured suit that can withstand bullet penetration for a limited time. A suit that can reach inhuman speeds due to bionically enhanced muscles. Also a suit that isn’t affected by the atmosphere / gravity. I believe sometime in the future something like this will be created whether to be a tool of war between countries as fossil fuels become scarce. A means of helping military personnel who have lost limbs but who wish to carry on fighting for their country. Or as a tool to defend the human race from threats elsewhere in the universe.
One example of technological discoveries already happening:
- Jet packs, although they are now a reality, there are still obstacles to overcome, however combined with the above powered armour suit. I believe the technology would compliment eachother perfectly. As demonstrated in Section 8.

4 Years until hover cars, Back to the Future style! Seriously though, I want to see a real working Portal Gun! To just hop through a hole in reality and be inside another place would be incredible. Obviously, there would be laws needed (wouldn’t want any uninvited guests, eh?) Oh and hypersonic speed like in Section 8 Prejudice! DARPA already has a hypersonic nuke in development, but what about being as fast as that little blue hedgehog?

Some stuff is somewhat starting to come into reality, I mean on a very minimal level you’ve got stuff like prosthetic limbs and robotic hands etc. coming about, like in Deus Ex. I mean take a look here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/6718528/Man-con trols-robotic-hand-with-thoughts.html
As for mech type things we’ve got people working on exoskeletons for enhancing people’s lifting capabilties like the HAL-5 suits: http://news.cnet.com/8301-27083_3-20043544-247.html
And you mentioned floating vehicles like in wipeout, well good sir! Check this out: http://www.gizmag.com/hoverbike/18813/
Of course all these things are in their early stages, but we’re getting there!

I do not think the augmenatations for the human body used in deus ex human revolution are too outlandish an idea to be a possibility. Although it would likely take decades of development and testing etc I do think enhancements to the dna is a fairly realistic idea of where science is heading. I wouldn’t mind being augmented and I’m sure many others would agree, there’s a place for it in today’s society and it isn’t so unrealistic that it should be considered impossible.

I definitely wouldn’t mind the ‘Restart from last checkpoint’ button. But I guess we’re not quite there yet.
There are many parallels you could draw between the storyline of the Metal Gear franchise and real world, like the war economy in MGS4. Or how everything is done and controlled digitally, change that has been progressively happening for a while now in real world.
What do I think we’ll see in the future? Real life HUD. There are already tests of beaming virtual displays straight to your eyeballs so I wouldn’t be surprised if in 20 years it was made reality.

surely we are well on the way towards deus ex. Between prostetic limbs that are moveable and eye implants with basic vision how far off can augmentation really be? Plus I’m sat here toying on my touchpad which is very similar to all those “newspapers” lying around. I must admit I wish it had the orange glow though lol

Star Trek! In the form of tricorders aka smartphones!!! We use them not only
for making calls but, for info gathering, gaming and net working. These phones even look
more futuristic than tricorders! Think about that last star trek episode you saw, how
Anytime they wanted info they were staring in they’re hands like no tomorrow. Now think
about every person you know with a smartphone, similarities are striking.

It’s funny you should mention Deus Ex because augmentations kind of already exist, alright maybe grenades and swords spouting from the fore arm don’t exist (yet) but one human was giving a chip in her retina that could detect colour giving her some sight and it actually worked. Fake limbs have been kicking about for a while (if you’ll pardon the pun) and we’ve already cloned a sheep, had threats of nuclear war and I read some of the comments and there talking escalators and rocket cars (which already exist). Those transport things of deus ex and killzone are basically cooler looking harrier jump jets. Most games just twist what already exists (well not aliens) and copy films set in the future but tweak them and make them look sleeker, perhaps this is what the future holds not new amazing technology but improved and stylish replicas of already futuristic technology. However I’m sure we’ll get some new technology’s to prevent some things from happening but if WW3 happens we’ll surely get some proper sci-fi weaponry because it’s a well-known fact we invent are best when we’re at war.

It’s a bit of a shame, but there are some weapon technologies from games that are in development or even used at the moment. When I played Metal Gear Solid 2 all those years ago I’d never had thought there really would be unmanned, robotic planes (you know, those annoying pyramid like drones that came hoovering after you) but years later the US uses unmanned drones to search and destroy Al Quada leaders in Afghanistan.
And at the moment Darpa is developping a weapon with bullets that track the target, so soldiers could effectivly shoot around a corner if an enemy is tagged. Very Resistance Bullseye! Very scary even.
You should start to wish those military types would play some other games like Ratchet and Clank and come up with cow sprouting guns. Maybe not that effective on the battlefield, but boy those poor people in Somalia and Ethiopia would rejoice!

I’d say the ‘cloud’ hoverboard thing from Enslaved. Not only does it solve the problem of hover technology in other games (C&C3 Kanes Wrath…) in relation to water, but it is super fast and fun too.
Also it saves the planet precious resources by not using plastic, wood or metal and instead by using some magical substance from the far, far future.

I’ve an idea – the skillshot system from Bulletstorm.
Think about it – instead of merely trying to survive a real war you could instead be suicidal and try to be ‘cool’ by kicking an enemy combatant into a wall/cactus/handily placed man-eater(s!).
I’d wager it would drive up standards in the army and make our good men and women unstoppable killing machines. But on the downside you will probably have too many war crimes to name, which is why I hope this is confined to gaming alone!
You already have that optical uplink that we saw in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, so this skillshot system is probably the next logical step.
