There are no voucher codes on offer this week, I’m afraid, as next week I will be accompanying a group of competition winners on a treasure hunt across the desert in Jordan, visiting some of the locations that inspired Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (look out for coverage next week).
However, I had an idea for a question I thought you might be able to get your teeth into. It came to mind when I was playing ICO this week and considering the current surge in demand for HD remakes of classic games. This week’s question is:
Feel free to elaborate on your response in the comments and talk about how you feel. Get involved!

Hard to choose one, but new IPs to push the whole shebang forward is always going to be best for us gamers.
Although I love sequels to the creme de la creme of the IPs and HD remixes, being an old-school gamer, usually excite the hell out of me!

Definitely HD remakes of classic games!
Simply because older games I just find allot more fun. Oh what I would do to get a HD remake of R&C 1,2,3, gladiator and the PSP games. Or a DMC 1,2,3 remake. Trying to get ICO done once I’m finished that straight onto GOW GOS. Got the plat trohpy for the whole series now, so now I got to get the plats for the 2 PSP titles too.
O, of course I have to mention a HD remake of the original crash games.
I know it will never happen, but I can dream cant I?
Oh well, crash returns the mod for cryengine 2 will have to do.

Just one thing to say: I’d die for the Jak and Daxter HD Collection
Thank you.

I voted Sequals of existing series, mainly cause if a game is good, I love sequals that continue that trend. I always wonder what’s next, so I consider sequals a good thing, but only if done proper. There’s also so many shitty games that get’s sequals and I don’t understand that….
I’m also a fan of both of the others voting alternatives also. Brand new IP’s are always intersting cause you don’t know what to expect, and I also like that, but maybe not as much as a good sequal.
HD remakes I’ve also embraced, but I also notice that some games are just upscaled without much extra done to them (I was quite disappointed with Splinter Cell’s HD… mainly cause I expected it to be better, but IMO those games have lost it a lot, atleast the first one… quite a tedious game if you ask me). But then you have the awesome HD remakes/remasters like ICO/SOTC, God Of War (both collections), Sly Cooper. Maybe that’s games that are so good in general that they were no problem to convert to HD and still look good.

While there is always something comfortable in getting a sequel to a great game, like Uncharted, or Assassin’s Creed, and it is always nice to revisit old favourites in HD remastered goodness, seeing some new, really new, when it is well executed is where the real greatness lies. Though sequels are where the quality tends to be because publishers will back those more easily than something new I think.

A balance between all of them?
I’m dying to play Dark Souls and Uncharted 3 but at the same time I’m really looking forward to the PS3/Vita remake of Final Fantasy X and whatever Quantic Dream is up to next.

Uncharted is good but as soon as the guy who voices Drake is gone, you have another generic game that looks pretty.

Yeah that’s quite tough to call. I mean we do want brand new games to play and if they are good we want sequels too. Then you’ve got the classics and it’s always great to revisit them, especially if they’ve been remade with our current technology in mind.
Really I think we want all three. We’re very demanding like that.

Brand new IPs for me. Love how Sony and PS keep innovating in this space. It’s given us some of the best games this generation (Uncharted, inFamous, LBP to name but a few)

I think the surge in demand for HD “remakes” or remastered content is due to the fact that this gen has being very poor in comparison to the previous one.
But remastering and re-releasing content is normal for any electronic medium, so it should not be different for video games.

Brand new IPS, but also sequels to the really great titles, like uncharted and what not, sequels to lesser titles not to bothered about., rather try something new

I like sequels and remakes, but I love the originality that comes with a new IP, the new worlds, characters, weapons, items, all that stuff.
Sometimes comes an IP that has the potential to be awesome, but because the first game didn’t break as expected are canned. I really wished that those developers got a second chance to prove that’s good. While other IPs don’t deserve that chance and have it.

SCEE to be honest. are you really going to take this on board? You sent out a questionnaire two years ago asking us what we want from you. we all called for x-game chat, extended warranty but did we get it. so is it really worth putting any faith into a poll like this?

Sequels to new IPs. Yes, I know how dumb that sounds, but often with games quality comes with iteration. I loved Dead Space 2, AC2 and Uncharted 2. But first games in those franchises weren’t that great.
So basically what I’m trying to say is I love the ideas new IPs bring, but I’m more looking forward to the “more polished” sequel. Some examples would be Heavy Rain or Mirror’s Edge. I loved both games, but they definite issues that hopefully will be fixed in the studios’ next games.

off to Jordan hey? you lucky man have great fun.
Poll need option of all three. I’m probably a greedy gamer but i’d want
all three options, which in fairness to Sony and it’s partners that something they are offering us right now. I really wouldn’t want to pick one of the options though

For me it would be HD remakes.
I own all current HD remakes & I intend to purchase the rest, apart from Silent Hill.
Hopefully next year we’ll at least see a Devil May cry Trilogy (Although it’s already been leaked!), Ratchet & Clank Collection, but it has to include Gladiator & the PSP titles that were converted to PS2, Jak & Daxter including Jak X & The Lost Frontier (Although it has been stated that this won’t happen), Burnout Collection that includes 1-3 with Revenge & Dominator with Legends as a bonus, Final Fantasy X with X-2 & 12 (X has been announced, but I would prefer all 3 on disc), GTA collection (including the Stories PSP remakes), Crash Bandicoot Collection with all PS2 titles & maybe a voucher to download the PS1 titles as these wouldn’t re-release in HD, Spyro collection the same as Crash with PS1 titles Voucher! SSX collection.
You get the general idea!

I love HD remakes too but, without new IPs, what are going to be the remakes of the future? Wonder if we’ll ever see a remake of a remake.

I voted for HD Remakes are some of those old clasics can not be beaten and would be amazing in HD i. Socom 2 in HD would attract al those old socom fans back and new, GTA San Andreas, Bully etc all great games all be amazing in HD make that happen (especially socom2
)

Very difficult, they’re all equally as important in my eyes. at the moment I’m playing the GoW & ICO/SotC HD Classics and really enjoying them, but in a few short weeks I’ll be playing Uncharted 3 (Explorer Edition).
I’m gonna have to go for new IP’s, as without innovation sequels & remakes could not actually exist (All games at their inception were new IP’s).
I’d certainly be dissapointed if there was no more Uncharted though.

The obvious con of a remake is that it’s just that: the same game. It is only good for new players or nostalgia. The best pro I can find is that you can get new generations to play a classic, possibly even alongside a parent who played the original.
The pro of a new IP is that it does something new. It is not bound by other games to a certain structure, and there is a lot of room for experimentation. The con is that it has a lot of unfinished stuff and lack of polish. A lot of games simply lack the groundwork of the franchise to create something coherent and consistent.
That brings me to the sequels. A sequel is a game that can expand on the basic premises in the first game. The boring stuff gets broken down, the good stuff gets salvaged. New stuff can (and should) be done, but the basic mechanics work properly. A sequel sometimes means a dent in creativity though, so that should be avoided by trying out new material. Assassin’s Creed really got a lot better when part II hit. A series shouldn’t be dragged forward to long though, “milking” it.
The constant trade-off between innovation and polish that becomes apparent here, is enough reason for me to stick with the balance of a sequel.

New IPs, fresh ideas, that’s why I like PlayStation for. I bought PS3 when I heard of Heavy Rain. Sequels of good games like Uncharted are great but don’t forget about new ideas. Even more indie titles in PS Store, please!

Sequels of existing series… New IP’s are fine too, but they’re hit or miss.. Remakes are nice to play on top of those.. Although I don’t see the need to play half of my ps2 library in HD again, some games or series (Ico/Sotc, MGS, ..) really deserve a remake..

I voted for new IPs because I think they are important in keeping the industry fresh and excited, but I agree with the point that some of the best games have been sequels, when an idea has been refined. I’ve enjoyed the remakes I’ve played but I’d always prefer to get my hands on something brand new.

Posted on 30 September, 2011 at 5:23 pm by AzedX
I chose brand new IPs, for the sole reason that without innovation there will be no more new gaming experiences. It would be more of the same, or more of the old.
Don’t get me wrong, I love HD remakes and sequels to successful series but I’m always looking for that new ip that revolutionises a genre.
A console cannot survive on nostalgia alone. With the playerbase shifting towards newer audiences, those audiences will seek their own ip’s that define their gaming generation. Much like the sonics, marios, final fantasys etc defined ours.

Hard to choose! I like them all. New IP’s for some new things once in a while. Sequels and prequels for the series you really like. And finally HD remakes of games you loved to play back in the day or the games that were really good but you never got around playing them.

I honestly could not choose. All three options have their pros and cons.
New IPs are pretty much the best place for innovation and originality, but they are less attractive to developers and publishers because it is less likely to sell than an existing franchise, this can often push the game into actually having less originality in an effort to make it more marketable.
Sequels can be fantastic both as places for innovations and improvements on previous entries and for continuations of great stories, but obviously too many sequels too quickly can become very tiresome and begin to feel very dull and by-the-numbers.
Remakes of existing games are a fantastic way for people who missed the games when they originally came out to experience a classic (I, for example, have never played ICO or Shadow of the Colossus, but I certainly want to, especially if they come to PSN), but obviously a remake for someone who played the original game can often be a little pointless and not worth the money, especially if it is a game you have played many times.
All in all I really just want great games, I do not care if they are new IP, sequels or remakes.

I think choosing just one is very tough. It is like being asked to choose just one of the beautiful triplets in front of you, no matter which you pick you’re always wondering what might have been.
With the amount of PS3′s in circulation there is a reason to focus on all 3 areas.
New IP’s generate fresh interest in platforms and keep giving users something new to get to grips with.
Sequels allow us to have an affinity with something regularly assuming they are good sequels, Dynasty Warriors need not apply.
HD Remakes are a good idea to keep classic games in the public eye and provide new users with a doorway to what brought us to where we are now. I much prefer true HD remakes though rather than shoddy ports like RE4 – It’s a great game but a shoddy HD effort.

It’s actually a combination of brand new IPs and sequels of existing series.
sure I like HD remakes, but the ones released now are a little bit to recent.
I would choose HD remakes if there would be games from before the PS2 in HD.

I would like a HD Remake of realMyst (which is itself a real-time remake of the original Myst), with Riven, Myst III, IV & V given the same treatment that Myst received ie real-time remake.
Google the s**t out of realMyst if you do not understand what I have just say, thank you.

First of all: a remake is a NEW title completely.
The recent PSN releases of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X were REMASTERED in HD. Same goes for the re-releases of the ICO collection this week. They are REMASTERED not a remake!!
A REMAKE would be “Resident Evil” on the Gamecube! A new game entirely based on the original Playstation hit!!
I am all in support for remastering older titles and re-releasing them on current platforms.
BTW: this is my request for Capcom to remaster Killer 7 in HD and re-release it on PSN. One of the best original titles ever!

I actually don’t really care weather its a sequel or new IP as long as I actually enjoy the game itself and it won’t start to feel repetitive “hey didn’t I do those exact same things in the previous episode?”.
But sure, if I liked those things in the previous episode I might actually like to do it again with just a few cosmetic changes, but it should not be the majority of the new game, nor should the new game feel like a little bit of DLC.
For a remaster I am most likely only interested if I haven’t played the original yet, or played it on a platform that I don’t use anymore and it has been a long time ago so it feels a bit fresh again.
So I can’t really choose for “Brand new IPs” or “Sequels of existing series” since I can enjoy a good sequel as much as a good new IP…

Hard to decide, Vice City Remake!!!
ohh lets get real, New IPs as long with Remakes in such a form like ICO or GOW Collections… some sequels are good too but there is thin line between milking and stroy telling, story must be solid, interesting like Heavy Rain or smth… we have a plaggue of “lets add some alien invasion here and there and we have a 4 titles in a row….”
37
Posted on 30 September, 2011 at 8:12 pm by poisondarter
Defiantly brand new IPs. Sequels are nice but they really aren’t necessary especially yearly ones like FIFA/Madden, Call of Duty etc. which are basically the same games each year but with minor alterations and differing stories. For ones handled with care like the Uncharted series and Assassins Creed 2 they can make for great experiences in an environment that we have been in before, extending the universe of the game and developing further the characters which inhabit it, but its more or less the same game as before 90% of the time.
As for HD remakes, they’re great but in the end their the same games we played a decade or so ago rendered in HD and optimised for modern consoles, so it has to be a really special one (ICO and Shadow of the Colossus comes immediately to mind) to really get me excited. In fact if you ask me they highlight the limitations of consoles compared to PCs, as although the games would have looked the same or worse on PC compared to console a decade ago, hardware and software has improved dramatically since then, allowing even cheap computers these days to make the original game look the same or similar without having to pay for it a second time.
38
Posted on 30 September, 2011 at 8:37 pm by Bealinator
Sequels mainly because the formula is tried and tested and is therefore less likely to be a bad game.
Uncharted series is a consistently good one, so any game from there is great.
But more original game series (as in new IPs?), I might not risk it.

Posted on 30 September, 2011 at 8:41 pm by hyperrabbit
For me all three choices seem almost equally important, so its very hard to decide. If i`m forced to choose between, i will go for new IPs, but for industry these are both significant as risky. We all know what happened with Mirrors Edge and Enslaved, right. Both are very good games, but did not sell very well.

Posted on 30 September, 2011 at 8:43 pm by vonhammer
So long as remakes are the level of resident evil one remake,a proper remake, not a HD port.Personally i’d rather future hardware take previous gen games and like PC’s run them better. So KZ3 would be 1080p,bags of AA and 60fps.Maybe even create higher res texture packs and have them download,or be stored on disk ready.
But publishers would rather you buy the “remake”

I love to see new game ideas come on to the market but i am also loving all the hd remakes that are coming out. it gives me a good chance to get some of the games i didnt pick up earlierin their best form yet. Some games are also worth buyng twice, resident evil 4 is a great blast from the past

I think we need to define what we mean by ‘remake’, I take it to mean a total overhaul as in a movies such as ‘the day the earth stood still’ and ‘tinker, tailor, soldier, spy’ etc. from what I hear FFX will have better graphics, sound, trophies and maybe some limited online features. I would be more inclined to describe that as ‘remastered’ like star wars and e.t.

I’m liking the HD remakes, great stuff, let’s not let these classics be lost to time. But the older the games the better I think, as much as I’m looking forward to collections such as MGS, looks fantastic!
But Bionic Commando: Rearmed, I loved that, and I hadn’t even played the original. Hoping for some more like Turrican and Dungeon Master (and of course FF7). Fingers crossed.

@ James
In response 2 your reply 2 me.
True but the question was “What r u most interested in?”
I’m most interested in remakes, but obviously there has 2 b new ips!
I’m not that dumb, but experiencing all the games that I have done in the past starting with the ZX Spectrum, I want 2 c more remakes of the games I loved instead!
Is that clearer?

@ Weasel Dave
Good point but I would welcome both.
Remake like Pacman DX was a completely different game but kept some of the addictive originality.
Remaster like the HD collections. All the games u know & love put with sharper clearer graphics!

Also graphics have come a very long way & I personally can’t see say, Killzone 3 in HD in the future as the graphics r so advanced in the first place!
I could b wrong though as look at the last 10 years!

i actually like all of the answers always welcome to more sequels
but sometimes i want to play my old ps2 games
(sadly don’t have a backwards compatible console)
and thats why more HD classics would be good
I always love some fresh IP’s to play specially when they try something new and different.

This is a though one. Can’t I select all three?
New IP’s deliver a new experience, but 9 out of 10 new IP’s fail. Sequels are always fun to play, but is mostly more of the same gameplay and atmosphere. Remakes are great because their cheap and you can enjoy the games we loved 5-10 years ago. I like to play all three games.
