There are no voucher codes on offer this week, I’m afraid, as next week I will be accompanying a group of competition winners on a treasure hunt across the desert in Jordan, visiting some of the locations that inspired Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (look out for coverage next week).
However, I had an idea for a question I thought you might be able to get your teeth into. It came to mind when I was playing ICO this week and considering the current surge in demand for HD remakes of classic games. This week’s question is:
Feel free to elaborate on your response in the comments and talk about how you feel. Get involved!

I chose “Brand new IPs”.
But I don´t like the next shooter or stuf like that. A brad new IP should do something new like Heavy Rain, L.A. Noir, Flower of Journey. If it´s a shooter it should do something realy new or different like Uncharted or Bioshock did.

oh man i’m not voting !!!
its really hard to choose one,
HD remakes is awesome because the quality of Ps2 games is better than most Ps3 game except few like uncharted, red dead redemption, killzone.
New IP’s are always good new but only if they’re made by Sony’s own studio’s specially Naughty Dog.
Sequels !! who on this earth does not want more of the uncharted games ??

That’s a hard question, I really look forward to a lot of sequels as the original games were awesome but, who doesn’t like a new games. But on the other most new games are just iterations on others games not original concepts. At the end of the day I’m torn between new games and sequels.

If I want a new IP, it has to be from a dev or publisher I know or trust, and I want to know about it from an independant source first like the 8 page spreads Game Informer do on incoming games. There needs to be some independant vearcity to the quality of a new IP. To me Fallout 3 was a new IP, even tho it was its third iteration and I fell in love with its canon from a 360 magazine spread of all places.
As for remakes, not really interested unless they are completely overhauled, otherwise I’d play them on the originals if I had them.
The ones I look forward to most are sequels. What many fans want is an AC:3 for example set in 1789 revolution Paris. Ubi is french & owes it to itself & us to recreate a pre-Haussmanian Paris. I’m waiting for Saints Row Third, GTA5, MCParis, GoW4, Skyrim(with a working engine and more CEs to go around BETHESDA), Darksiders 2 etc. But bare in mind these seqs all came from an original IP so…

Could we europeans get Uncharted 3 Multiplayer earlier too. Cause its bit of unfair that Americans can just go to eat at subway and get a code but we cant

All of them are great in their own way.
Brand new IP’s are great because they allow the developers to try something completely new – like the first Portal game. – New IP’s are kind of like experiments.
Sequals are great because the core elements of the game have already been made, and if the previous game was a success, it will most likely have a higher budget, which allow the games to be significantly improved – like Portal 2.
HD remakes are great because they are an amazing value. If you have the games already, you can still play the HD remakes because of the HD improvement and the added trophies (and nostalgia). If you’re new to the games then it’s almost like buying a new game – but you get about 4 times the value for your money.
I like all 3 equally, so I couldn’t get myself to vote for one of them.

This is slightly unrelated but I wasn’t sure where to post it if I wanted some sort of answer :/ I’m hoping you do reply but anyway; basically I’m abit annoyed that USA players have this subway offer basically letting them get a month ahead on uncharted 3′s multiplayer yet people in EU ect have no such offer unless ofcourse the stats etc are being reset then it would be irrelevant :p

I’m still hoping for a Kingdom Hearts HD Anniversary Collection and would like to see more remakes. I think new IPs are important though but they are only interesting if they are high quality and/or innovative.

Hard to say, we need new IPs, but it’s hard to afford new games without a guarantee we’ll enjoy it. It’s a big risk. I don’t really like modern day sequels aka Call of Duty 9 now? With spinoffs, ugh.
Plus… I do want more HD collections, mainly because I enjoyed PS2 games so much more than anything else. I’d die for a Jak and Daxter remake (with Jak X!) or a Ratchet collection (without the PSP games, only the Insomniac ones, they did a great job that I don’t think they succeeded with the PS3 iterations).

I delcined to vote as I prefer a mix of all 3. However, in regards to sequels, I think that there has to be some innovation in there somewhere. There is a cracking thread over in the forums discussing if it would be a good thing or not for the games industry for MW3 & BF3 to fail. IMO the CoD series has done nothing, since the first MW game of 4 years ago, to drive the FPS genre forward so in that respect sequels can be a bad thing as they are simple re-hashes of exactly the same game year in, year out. On the flip side the likes of Dead Space 2 has taken an existing IP and taken it to a whole new level in terms of adding to the gameplay and expanding on an already great story.
So, all three options are the ones for me, so long as the sequels are building on what has come before and not just spewing out the same game with a different skin!

New IPs, as long as they’re original ideas / stories. Obviously not everything can be 100% original, etc, but as long as they feel fresh instead of copied. HD remakes, there’s only 1 I want, Legacy of Kain series. (Although, I have all the originals)

There are quite a few ps1 and ps2 games I would be interested in seeing remastered with better graphics and sound, but that doesn’t mean no more effort should be put into new games, genres and concepts. We can all enjoy the innovative new games while still reminiscing with the old ones!

It is a tough one but i sit somwhere in the middle of new ip and and hd remakes. Ive been a gamer since the days of 8bit computers when there was always a great amount of new games and ideas being put out.I mean has the now yearly cod release pushed the series on any further than the first one? do we really need to keep paying full price for a updated team roster and couple of new features for our yearly sports game ie fifa/madden and such like?. Lets see some new ideas and worlds to play in and bring the classic games from our gaming history so new generations can enjoy them.

New IPs are most important, without them the industry would stagnate, & new games are needed to make sequels to. Anyway, Sony are pretty good at supporting innovative & leftfield IPs.
That said I’m thoroughly enjoying the Ico/SOTC remasters.
One remaster I would love to see would be Okami in HD with Move support, but given it’s rather limited success on both PS2 & Wii, I suspect it’s unlikely to happen.

Let’s be honest here. If the ‘emotion’ chipset hadn’t been removed from the PS3 to begin with, or an agreement had been met regarding the PS2 emulation license we wouldn’t have these HD Re-masters. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like them a lot and have bought most if not all ‘HD Classics’ that have been released recently.
I understand that manufacturing costs had to be cut for the PS3 during its initial period, but someone within the decision makers thought cutting the PS2 backward compatibility was a great idea.
“…this is a Next Gen’ machine” I can hear him say “…who’s gonna want to play PS2 games on their PS3?”. Oh how wrong they were.
After realizing their huge mistake, and seeing how successful last gen’ XBOX games were selling via the ‘Games on Demand’ service, we were inundated with PSX games. Not classic PSX games I might add, but ‘Barbie Goes Shopping’, or ‘My Little Pony’ etc (MGS and FFVII the exception to the rule).
But some HUGE mistakes have a silver lining. If that massive misjudgment in the gaming consumer hadn’t been made we wouldn’t have HD updates of collective classic PS2 games.
I just hope the guy who made that initial decision is back flipping burgers where he belongs.

I’m gonna vote Brand new IPs because every now and then you get a future classic come through, I was so excited the first time I saw assassins creed and uncharted I love that feeling a few of the new IPs can give you.

I’m more interested in seeing any games coming from developers or even specific people (like Shinji Mikami for example) that I know have produced games that I really like, so I don’t mind whether it’s something completely new, a sequel of some kind or whatever. Great thing about HD ports though is that you don’t really have to have expectations they may not live up to as you really know what you’re getting.

All of the above? But with new IPs being the most risky, those are the ones we need to be most ardent in our support of.

Err, all three actually. The moment one of the three gets done to the detriment of the others, it will be bad. A balance is needed.

I think this will happen, as there has been alot of demand for it & i’d be over the moon if it happened
Jak & Daxter next year here I come! Ratchet next please!

Well honestly i think a good mix is great…i love new games that are fresh but i also love an newer ,better version of a game i love (SEQUELS. HD remakes are OK, they are good for people to relive old classics but i much prefer a blend of new IP’s and Sequels
78
Posted on 1 October, 2011 at 11:32 pm by Bovrillor
I’d say a old IP is just as good as an old one, it’s the actual gameplay mechanics and innovation that make a title worthy, or not.
For example, I could play endless Fallout sequels if they continue to progress the gameplay at the current rate.
God of War, while pretty, made very little improvements over the course of it’s lifespan, so it’s good they killed the IP when they did – ie before it got stale.
IMO Sports games are the laziest genre, with very little improvement from one year to the next. A new roster is not a new game, cash-cow devs!

….wait… How about HD remakes of Sequels to new IPs? Would that work?

@ Polynski
You will have to sign into your account on the website & change your password incase your details are accessed.
I would contact the Customer Support line to have the account deactivated properly.
Sorry I can’t be more help, but obviously the correct way would be to deactivate it on your PS3. Since you don’t have your PS3, the Customer Support Line will have to be the only option that you use, i’m afraid.

By far the most interesting games are brand new IPs.
I like innovation and I want to experience now things
But like with bands the second and third release are usually better than the debut, so i don’t mind sequels.
But what i can’t stand are yearly iterations, i already have alot of games to look forward to, but i don’t have time and motivation to keep up with every Assassin’s Creed, COD and such.
I prefer a new GTA, Elder Scrolls,… every 3 to 4 years, with those games it’s worth the wait

What’s wrong with new IPs, and paying tribute to the good games that were made before? At least the ones that did something interesting, and still promote gaming as a format for creative expression of different kinds..?

James,
Square is making remakes of remakes of remakes for ages now! :S

Posted on 3 October, 2011 at 5:21 am by brobst
I think the answer is all three honestly. Remakes for certain titles because you don’t want the developer to ruin what they had. Sequels for others because there are features you want to see improved upon but the game play is stellar. And some new titles, because every title was a new title at some point before it deserved the attention it gets today.

I love to see brand new IP’s… like Neverdead, but with Uncharted 3 & Batman Arkham City coming out soon sequels are not alway a bad thing.

NEW IPs here.
Sony still needs it’s “Gears of War”. Brutal, 3rd person shooter. I would love love to have something like that on my PS3.
U3 is great, day 1 but I am not that excited tbh since I know what I am getting. Hopefully ND let’s that series rest for a while and works on new IP next.
Other series that need rest is God of War. I have played and finished every single GOW games. Both PSP just for them. But I had enough. Honestly if GOW4 gets announced next day, I would not care. Too much GOW. Let it rest.
HD remakes are nice, but I played those. I have Sly collection, and are looking forward to Sly4.
So in this order NEW IP > Sequel >> HD remake.

yeah a ps gears type would be the business,..but after playing the last two gow’s i would love them to say that no4 was in the works,..plus alls we’ve done since gow3 is replay what was on ps2/psp so i can’t agree with you that it’s been to much,….also i kinda don’t believe you, if 4 was announced you’d be as happy as the rest of us,..lol….

Posted on 3 October, 2011 at 10:14 am by chrisandsheva
anyway i would like to see a new kind of ip released,..after having a moan at uncharted3 multi’s announcement it come to me that game devs presently see thier market in multiplayer nearly every new release now has it, some work well, while others just don’t do the game justice, so why don’t devs make 3 versions of a game (where feasable) 1 version like they make now,..another with a dampened down (or none) multi and 3rd for multi only,..maybe with little trials of other to tempt you into picking whichever makes them most money,…sorry i meant whichever one you may also like,….. i know that probably sounds mad,..but try and picture yourself say 10or20 years older, do you think you’ll still enjoy the multi xp as much,..listening to the next gen speaking in language that you don’t understand etc,…may be a solution in years to come.

there are pros and cons to all 3 choices
1. not every new IP is interesting or original – the vast majority follow the same formula not just gameplay but story as well and this is prevalent across all genres of games
2. sequels can work but I can also think of ones that didn’t Dead Space 2, Earth Defence Force: Insect Armageddon, Fallout New Vegas – all three of these were major disappointments for me – DS 2 was dumbed down, EDF (the devs obviously hadn’t played the first one so couldn’t grasp why the 1st one was such a loved cult game and Fallout NV – besides being a glitch fest and quite a few game breaking – well it’s not the first time Obsidian butchered a series I loved (Knights of the Old Republic – The Sith Lords was dire)
3. Personally I would love to see Okami HD remake – stunning game and would be perfect for Move – and for all those that say its a wii game – nope it was on the ps2 first
but there are limitations to these remakes – playing RE4 from a distance looks good but take a close look at the textures and well its really showing its age – doesn’t make it any less fun and it is nice to play it on an HD telly as opposed to using my retro corner and playing it on my gamecube and old CRT

There should always be sequels. I think franchises like Killzone, Gran Turismo, Sly, LittleBigPlanet, WipEout and the ICO games should always be around. Games that define PlayStation. Sony has so many good brands that people have come to know and love over the years. It is for example a big reason why I pre-ordered the Vita, because I know some of my favourite franchises will be on it. Same thing goes for the eventual PlayStation 4 (please call it that, don’t go for anything weird). And there should always be new IPs as well, to help the industry evolve, take shots at creating new great games that might turn into franchises. And I think there should be a new HD collection ever now and then too, for the truly timeless classics. Not all people have played the Sly games for example and they should get a chance to know why they should look forward to Sly 4. And anyway, HD collections are also a good way of preventing unnecessary and STUPID reboots! HD collections get the kids who haven’t played the old games up to speed without having to reset everything. And besides the obvious Jak and Ratchet collections I’d love to see a Forbidden Siren HD collection, for good horror is hard to find these days. Make another Siren already!
