Launching a game is always a frantic, exciting time, especially when you are a small, close-knit team. The Playstation Network launch of Hydrophobia Prophecy on 2 November is no exception; in fact we’re even more excited than usual to have it launch as Game of the Month on PlayStation Plus, and we’re really grateful to Sony for getting behind the game.
For those of you unfamiliar with the game, I’ll give you a little background. Hydrophobia Prophecy is third person action adventure with a sci-fi twist and a uniquely dynamic feature; our bespoke HydroEngine fluid dynamics technology. It’s a full physics simulation for flowing water – the only one of it’s kind in games, which allows water to wash dynamically around the environments, carrying objects and characters along with it. If you’re a sucker for water and/or physics in games, then it really is a sight to behold – we’re very fortunate here at Dark Energy to have some incredibly talented tech-heads!
HydroEngine allows us to deliver some really dynamic and unique physics based gameplay. Shoot out a window or weakened wall and water will crash through, wiping out any enemies that stand in the way. You can also shoot environmental hazards like barrels to unleash floating oil fires (which can become a weapon or a hazard depending on the emergent flow behaviour) or fuse boxes and cables to electrocute enemies. Combining these together gives you score multipliers, and you get tonnes of emergent behaviour because the water physics is never the same twice, so chain reaction physics is the order of the day.
Since the lead character, Kate Wilson, is an intelligent systems engineer, you can also utilise her augmented reality MAVI device to hack into systems and CCTV networks so you can scan the area ahead or remotely open doors from afar and unleash more torrents of water into unsuspecting enemies.
If you are familiar with the game then you’ll be pleased to learn that Hydrophobia Prophecy on PlayStation Network is definitely our best version yet. The tech guys have done a great job of harnessing the power of PS3 to make some significant enhancements Dark Energy’s in-house InfiniteWorlds engine, so the game really looks superb. Gameplay wise it’s in a different league compared to the original release; the design team went back to the drawing board reworked really almost everything from the ground up. It’s been a lot of work but it really is worth while in the end.
In addition there are literally hundreds of refinements sourced directly from Darknet – our built in developer feedback system which allows players to drop comment flags at any point in the game. It’s really been fascinating watching the data points from real players build up in our dev builds of the game. It’s particularly delightful to play through the game and come across a concentration of positive feedback flags around a cool event, and better still to watch the evolution of the data as we’ve updated and improved the game. It makes it all the more exciting knowing that PlayStation Network players are going to get their hands on the most polished version to date, and it will be interesting to see a whole bunch of new Darknet data emerge from the PlayStation community.
Going back to the game itself, we’re also very keen to see how PlayStation Network players respond to our implementation of PlayStation Move motion control. The precision and enhanced immersion it brings to the table really helps to engross you in the action, and we think it adds a new dimension to the flow-combat gameplay. We spent a great deal of time tuning the PlayStation Move controls, and we’ve made sure there is a full range of customisation options available so players can adjust it to their liking. Our goal was to bring a compelling third person action-adventure to PlayStation Network with really great PlayStation Move functionality – and it’s certainly the preferred method of play here at Dark Energy now.
We think you’ll find Hydrophobia Prophecy on PlayStation Network to be a really unique experience, with tonnes of dynamic and emergent gameplay. We’re really excited about building a community behind the game too, so we’ve worked hard to ensure it’s great value for money, and we can’t wait to see the Darknet data points flooding into our system and really look forward to sharing the analysis with you.

I have this on xbox, is there anything different gameplay wise? I’ll still pick it up as i’ll get it free.
Thanks team!

Yes there is a LOT different on PSN compared to the Xbox original. All new cover system, climbing system, deeper storyline, new ending, rebalanced weapons, redesigned levels, new mechanics like floating cover, stealth takedown and water powers are in the game. All better graphics, Move support, better animations, new voice acting, Darknet… the list goes on and on.
Hope you enjoy the game and let us know what you think through Darknet.

Yes, yes and yes. New objectives, new areas, new gameplay mechanics, new abilities and a whole heap of extra polish.

seems like an interesting title, my plus subscription has lapsed and with the recession en all £40 is a little out of my reach, I’ll wait until the next round of discount promotions.
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 12:24 pm by Rob Hewson
Well, we’re also doing an introduction offer for non-Plus subscribers so it’s great value either way. I think the introduction promotion puts it as just over a fiver.

Woop! We’re delighted to be able to do this promotion. Sony have been amazing, they looked at the game with all the PS3 specific improvements, Move support etc and basically said “Right, we’re getting behind this game”. We’re over the moon here at DED.

Tsk, tsk, tsk…
Don’t those people know you’re supposed to use the wrist straps with the Move controller?
All it takes is one person to get overly thrusty with the Move and *BANG* there goes your Bravia LCD
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 12:31 pm by Rob Hewson
Oops. Don’t tell Sony. Gomer (the bearded fellow) did get a little “overly thrusty” at one point… but it had nothing to do with Move.

Wow I had almost forgotten about this one… this news is etching a big smile on my face. =D
For those wondering about the additional content and technical enhancements this PS3 version is getting, there is an old list of it on http://www.iwaggle3d.com/2011/04/hydrophobia-prophecy-coming-to.html
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 12:32 pm by Rob Hewson
Yep, and that list is out of date now… there’s been even more enhancements since then

Posted on 28 October, 2011 at 11:06 pm by Opinions
My understanding was this started life out as a tech demo that was then turned into a game. I haven’t heard about this for so long, I thought it had been dropped
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 12:34 pm by Rob Hewson
Not exactly, we built it to showcase our HydroEngine fluid dynamics, but we were always working to deliver a full action adventure… it’s been a lot of work but we’re excited now it’s finally hitting PSN.

Jade is a great character, but if there’s a likeness it wasn’t intentional.

@1: It’s a complete re-haul of the Live Arcade version. Two-thirds of the game content is new with the rest being recycled from the original/Pure version that was release on Live Arcade last year. The game mechanics and engine have also been given a serious overhaul, and Move support has been incorporated. Check this Euro Gamer article for a list of the changes and improvements that have been implimented: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-26-steam-ps3-hydrophobia-pro phecy-revealed
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 12:37 pm by Rob Hewson
Yep and since that list was published we’ve done a tonne more, like new animations, stealth takedown mechanic, rebalanced weapons, more reworked areas, detail-mapping tech for textures etc etc.

I’ll renew my PS+ with the money I’m not buying Battlefield 3 for. It’s £49.99 witch is 515 SEK when I write this, yet you charge 699 SEK for it. That is a whopping £67.86! How you sleep at night marking up the prices with almost £20 for people I’ll never know. Shame.

@20
Sony didn’t choose the BF3 price it was EA but yes i argee its a rip off especially when buying from Amazon is much more cheaper its also easy and will come on release day.
If digital distribution is the future and companies start charging £50 – 60 for a game, i’ll have to find myself a new hobby or stick to the PS2/PS3 era.

the game looks great, been looking forward to this one, i’ve been following the game for a long time, since the early water engine tech demo videos.
i did try the demo on xbox, and quite liked it.
i was happy to hear the ps3 version was finally being released.
then i was ecstatic when i found out i’d get it free with my ps+ sub.
there are times when i wonder if the plus sub is worth it, and at times like the the answer is a resounding yes. ^_^
i can’t wait till next wednesday.
better blow up me water wings. ^_^

Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 1:20 pm by Bilouze
A few years ago when this had just been announced it looked more like some sort of survival game set in a very dangerous and unpredictable environment. Now it looks like just any other action game…
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 2:48 pm by Rob Hewson
We did go more down the action route in the end, but you’ll find that there are a lot of unique elements with way the HydroEngine water physics interacts with everything. For example, shooting a barrel so it explodes, rips a hole in the wall which water pours through and then carries the resulting oil fires flowing into you enemies… always fun!
We’ve also got a stealth takedown now and you can hack into CCTV network and remotely open doors to unleash the water.
If you decide to give it a try let us know what you think

Cool!!! A free game that I actually want to play! Guess they ran out of megadrive classics! This showed real promise at preview stage and I was interested to have a go. This looks great, looking forward to playing it via my + Subscription.
I hope the water engine can be implemented into other games, like SpeedTree and the Havok engine. Would be great to see these effects become an industry standard. Water has been dull in games for too long. Imagine what these sorts of tricks could do for a game like Uncharted!

Agreed. We have black-boxed HydroEngine so it could be plugged into other projects.

Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 7:05 pm by whittle1
This will sound bizarre but I have always hated games where you have to play ‘under-water.’ It’s usually because once you’re under you have a time limit before you drown, and I HATE being rushed. I also dislike the idea of floating / swimming around and no gravity.
Despite this of course I will reserve judgement until I’ve actually played the game, and besides my criticism isn’t directed at hydrophobia prophecy. Good coup for PS Plus!
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 8:05 pm by Rob Hewson
It is a very, very tricky thing to get right, even more so when your water is entirely free-flowing and dynamic, so we’ve spent a huge, huge, huge amount of time focusing on it. Hopefully we’ve got the balance right, let us know what you think.

I am also not going to whine about + membership for a while
@ Rob can you explain a bit more about Darknet?
Thanks. Jay

Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 8:12 pm by Rob Hewson
It’s an absolute pleasure to answer all these questions.
Darknet is our developer feedback system. So, if you select Dev Feedback from the pause menu, you can then choose a cataegory (e.g. graphics, animation, gameplay) and sub categories and then drop a comment flag indicating if you are frustrated, excited, lost, think something is funny, dramatic, boring, annoying etc.
You select then gets uploaded to our server, and appear to use as a an icon in dev build of the game at the exact location in the environment you dropped it. Over time, tens of thousands of these build up from players of the game, and we can analyse them with all sorts of graphs and tables from area to area, and figure out where the game is working well and where people are finding it more frustrating etc and then use that data to improve the game in updates or future version.
This is a massive part of the reason why the PSN version is the best yet.
Here’s a video on Darknet:

So glad to hear that you’ve ‘Black-Boxed’ the engine, and after watching the various videos you’ve posted, I’m really looking forward to playing your game.
I agree with some of the comments here about ‘water-based’ sections in games often being the low point of the experience. God of War and pretty much every first-person-shooter ever spring to mind. Even Mario, for that matter. Damn you, bloopers!
That said, games that implement water well – though few and far between – I can only think of Wave Race 64 and Archmydian Dynasty – are always a nice surprise. Can’t wait to play your title this Wednesday.
Oh, and your feedback system – genius – this should be the standard for every developer. The number of times I’ve been playing a game and felt the need to tell someone that ‘this bit just broke’ or ‘more of this, please’…
Posted on 29 October, 2011 at 9:25 pm by Rob Hewson
Yep that was our thinking too… it’s really awesome looking at all the data playing through the game and seeing peoples opinions on a moment by moment basis.
Also, Wave Race 64 RULES! Lost so much time playing that back in the day

Wow, that takes me back! I think it has evolved in a lot of ways… but at it core the things we were aiming for there, the stuff about the emergent behaviour resulting from the dynamic water has remained key. Details have changed though, and we perhaps ending lean more towards action and development went on.

Looking forward to giving it a go but, while the game looks interesting, you should be commended for your feedback system above all. I understand the need for betas and everything and either posting on forums or sending emails with feedback, but the actually bring that into the game is something that should have been done YEARS ago. What a surprise a smaller developer comes up with an innovative idea for feedback and, with the ability to patch and adjust, make proactive changes to games.
Sorry, this to me, is an amazing feature and, sorry again, I hope other developers steal it!

@Rob: aaawwh… you really don’t have a Scottish accent that annoy the merikans? So disappointed right now ;_;
Still, looking forward to play the game. And to writing a review. Water-physics is one thing, but it’s interesting to look at how the design and writing can allow any changes in the levels, without the maps breaking. Since it seems that the tech to do it is there – but many developers can’t manage to incorporate it into the game. And instead going for strictly linear designs. So, very interesting to look at attempts that break that trend.
(…I’m going to dock you points for no Scottish accent, though!)
