While 3D gaming on PS3 is a pretty new thing, the basic theory that underpins it was pioneered by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838. Little did he know that, more than 150 years later, people would experience rockets zipping past their earlobes in Killzone 3.
The basic concept may be old, but experts tell us that there is a lot more to come from stereoscopy in games. Experts such as SCEE‘s own Mick Hocking hint at a future including holographics, which combines 3D with head-tracking to let us ‘look around’ a game object as if it were right there in the room. Our question for you this week is:
What are your feelings around 3D gaming?
I’ve acquired 15 voucher codes for the retro-tastic PixelJunk Sidescroller and, as always, our independent judge will pick the 15 most insightful comments and the codes will be sent out via private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com.

Had 3d tv a few months now, some games are quality on it, but when I played black ops on it, when aiming down the iron sight you could see 2 sights at the end of the rifles, so had to close one eye. Are all fps like that or is Killzone 3 better than black ops in 3d?
It is good but not worth the money.
Don’t think it will take off in a major way just purely because of the cost.

A lot of the best games out there are 2d e.g. rayman, prinny etc. Sometimes simplicity is better, less is more in my opinion.

i have not yet experienced watching anything in 3D yet but from what I hear it’s supposed to be really good quality, but the price of a 3D TV is just far too much for me to be able to afford it, then you have to buy more 3D glasses so that your guests kids can break them, also a friend of mine said he saw a movie in 3D at the cinema and his whole family felt really sick afterwards, which is kind of why I haven’t gone to see it at a cinema. So in conclusion it is a cool experience, but we haven’t quite perfected 3D yet, it probably should of had more work put into it before it was purchaseable

Yo i would like a 3D telly i would buy 1 my 1st 3D film was toy story 3 but due to my weak eye i saw some 3D effects but bad headaches.
so 3D is out i‘m afraid but 3D is way better then old 60‘s 80‘s tv experiment that never happen ITV was on strike at the time.
you never had it so good, now off-topic i won’t be on here this week REJOY so if a 100% possibility that PS2 titles landed & arc the lad 2 with 1 i say kudos SCEE now.
if not Pffffft lol.

3D just makes things look better with depth.
It doesn’t create anything new though, at least not now. Unless developers can introduce new and interesting game mechanics using depth then i may just get into it.
For the price right now it is not worth it in my opinion.

3D can help make a game a lot more immersive and in some cases it can even contribute to gameplay, for example by making aiming easier. Unfortunately, at present there are a number of things holding 3D back. Cost of entry, crosstalk, headaches, lack of content and in the case of games compromises that have to be made to enable 3D.
It is a good thing that there are now companies who are taking 3D seriously and as they keep improving the technology it is very likely that 3D will become a standard rather than a gimmick.

I’m truly surprised at how many are saying getting into 3D is too expensive; my 47-inch 3DTV was £700. The non-3D 48-inch flatscreen before it was £1000, with the 36-inch CRT before it was £1500. A little perspective please.
Lack of content? Without actually counting, I’ve got between 20 and 30 3D games and a half-dozen or so 3D Blu-rays.
3D isn’t the future, it’s now.

Well i have had a 3d for about 8 months. With regards to live tv and movies its a fantastic thing to have. With regards to gaming well thats a different story. Whilst i have only played 1 game in 3d, i was so looking forward to playing cod black ops. The excitement soon turned to dissapointment. The game looked great with everything popping out and looking down the target ready to take some ones head off, BUT…….bang i was dead first. Because of the 3d i was too taken in by all around that it was extremely hard to see other player which caused a serious amount of deaths. In a nutshell 3d games are great to look at but IMO in a fps it makes the game hard.
ps i love 3d n recommend to everyone.

I just bought a 3DTV this past weekend, and playing through Uncharted 3 for the second time, but this time in 3D. And I must say it’s absolutely fantastic, I didn’t expect it to be this good. GT 5 on the other hand is not that good, its equally good without 3D.
Please note, this is on and LG TV with passive glasses, I’ve tried active shutter glasses, but they are bothering my eyes pretty much right away. With the passive glasses, I could play for over 2 hours straight, and it still felt fine. And while passive glasses can have some ghosting issues from time to time, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience, and I don’t have to worry about batteries either.
So personally I think the majority of the industry is going in the wrong direction with the active shutter glasses, and I think it turns most people off when they try it. If I hadn’t seen Avatar in 3D in the cinema with passive glasses, I would not have even considered a 3DTV, as every time I’ve tried the active ones, it was immediate discomfort.
In the end, with the combination I have now, I have actively started to seek out more games in 3D, and going to purchase some more soon.

14 out of the 15 prizes go to comments posted on the 11th, this should be renamed ‘The Friday Debate’ cause if you comment on Sat or Sun you haven’t got a hope in hell!! If this keeps up I will give up without trying, I know James will not comment or even read this post because I don’t think he even knows page 5 exists!

@ 217
LOL, I noticed that a looong time ago. My Friday’s are usually quite hectic & when it’s finally time to relax late in the night I tend to forget about the PC and just cuddle up with a good game on the PS3
Come Saturday morning I bash my head for yet again forgetting about posting at the ‘Friday Debate’ and usually just drop it as I know it’s only the first 50 posts that get read, and the last 3-5 vouchers thrown at random answers on page 2, sometimes 3.
Besides, with it being a ‘neutral’ judge on Sony’s payroll I guess my chances are blown out the window as I’ve been quite loud with my criticism of SCEE’s theft of my Payday – The Heist voucher hehehe

hi I just recently purchased a 3d tv Samsung 49 inch and all I can say us wow. On the 3d sides of things I did download sonic generations demo and once again how good is it. It is bloody fantastic I must say . Also 3d being new I think honestly it will take off however at this stage it is slow but give it a couple more years and now more games are coming out in 3d it will be more utilized. Cheers mick from Canberra

@216 The only problem with the passive system is that you cannot get an HD picture with it, as the image for each eye can only be a maximum of 540, due to each eye seeing half of the columns of pixels each. Maybe in the future passive systems will be able to show full HD, but at the moment Active Shutter, seems to be mainstream choice.
I did see a glasses free display in Bestbuy at the weekend, and while it is a very clever system, the clarity was shocking. It was a very picture, and the sweet spot was literally a couple of inches. It’s a shame as I think glasses free is the only way that 3D will ever become a staple for home entertainment.

While I am yet to be fully sold on 3D gaming, I believe it has a lot of potential. We will inevitably go through the same phase as the movies did, where 3D will be used to shock and scare, but as time moves on we will hopefully see some mature and interesting uses for the technology. Look at how 3D platformers have evolved as an example. to start with, they just didn’t stack up to 2D side-scrollers. Nowadays we have Uncharted 3 and Assassin’s Creed. While the 2D side-scrolling genre hasn’t completely disappeared, 3D platforming games added a new layer of depth. Hopefully, 3D will develop the same way. I’m excited to see what happens.

@216 oh, so it’s called ghosting, I have an Active and I still get it on some games like Resistance 3, even noticed it on the Killzone 3 demo and the Uncharted 3 beta, not checked the actual game (it’s been put away for crimbo) but I can’t see how it’d be any different
