The Weekend Debate: 3D Gaming Thoughts

Countries: , , , ,

While 3D gaming on PS3 is a pretty new thing, the basic theory that underpins it was pioneered by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838. Little did he know that, more than 150 years later, people would experience rockets zipping past their earlobes in Killzone 3.

The basic concept may be old, but experts tell us that there is a lot more to come from stereoscopy in games. Experts such as SCEE‘s own Mick Hocking hint at a future including holographics, which combines 3D with head-tracking to let us ‘look around’ a game object as if it were right there in the room. Our question for you this week is:

What are your feelings around 3D gaming?

I’ve acquired 15 voucher codes for the retro-tastic PixelJunk Sidescroller and, as always, our independent judge will pick the 15 most insightful comments and the codes will be sent out via private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com.

Access Episode 8

Countries: , , , ,

The weekend is nearly here, so to help you through those last few hours of weekly toil, we’ve got the latest episode of Access to bathe your eyes in. Game of the Week this time around is THQ’s open-world gang ‘em up, Saints Row: The Third. As well as taking an extensive look at the game’s crazy antics, there’s developer insight from Volition’s Greg Donovan and Scott Phillips to enjoy.

Like the odd bit of dressing up? Then make sure you check out Access’ visit to the London Comic Con, as they get up close and personal to an army of dedicated cosplayers, plus get to grips with some of PS3‘s most current blockbusters, including Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Street Fighter X Tekken.

It’s not all about the games this week either, as PS3‘s premier music video service, VidZone, can attest. Access visited the re-launch party in London and spoke to VidZone‘s Jon Pike and Adrian Workman about the exiting new features that you can look forward to. In short – the interface is now super-pretty and browsing your music library is easier than ever.

To finish off, there’s your customary course of news from the world of PS3, including a sneak-peak at new Lord of the Rings title, War in the North, plus the usual round up of all the latest and best content on the PlayStation Store.

Ken Levine Interview: Taking BioShock From Rapture To Columbia

Countries: , , , ,

BioShock is one of the most surprising games of this generation. First of all, it isn’t inspired a real-life conflict, a film or another game series, but a moderately successful novel called Atlus Shrugged by Ayn Rand, which put forward a philosophy called Objectivism, or ‘rational selfishness’.

BioShock’s writer and Creative Director, Ken Levine, and his team are now working on BioShock Infinite, a departure from the dark, dystopian corridors of Rapture into the bright skies of Columbia, a floating city named after the female personification of the United States of America. I recently had the chance to sit down with Ken to talk about the philosophies that underpinned the original BioShock and how, if at all, these are being applied to BioShock Infinite.
