Some of you may have read reports of a new PS3 exclusive called The Last of Us set to be revealed at the Spike TV 2011 Video Game Award Show (VGAs). We are now happy to reveal that The Last of Us is being developed by Naughty Dog Inc., creators of such acclaimed game series as Uncharted, Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.
The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave, young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.
“We are excited to finally unveil The Last of Us, a project the team has been working hard on for some time,” said Evan Wells, co president of Naughty Dog Inc. “Naughty Dog’s mission is to change the way people experience videogames. We are confident The Last of Us will take a leap forward in cinematic gaming and storytelling, providing gamers with an experience unlike anything else in the industry.”
We hope this teaser trailer has whetted your appetite and, as always, PlayStation.Blog will be the first place to hear about The Last of Us, this exciting new title from some of the industry’s most talented game designers.

Have to also meantion how close Ellie’s resemblance is to Ellen Page. I wonder if they actually got her to play the role for mo-cap etc etc like Emily Rose did as Elaine in Uncharted. Now that would be awesome.

It still amazes me how people can get excited over a cutscene trailer with no gameplay footage. I have to admit, I fell into this trap too with FFXIII, but I found out firsthand that pretty graphics don’t make a good game.
Looks a tad like neverdead to me.

I´m not sure. It´s ND so it will look awesome but I just don´t care for horror survival/zombie games. Lets wait and see…

Looks great, I just hope that it doesn’t wind up half-assed and unfinished like Uncharted 3. Don’t get me wrong, still a great game, but outdone by it’s own prequels.

@ 48 and 49
I was just looking into the comments to see if anyone else thought of Ellen Page. But seems a bit too young though.
Fingers crossed anyway.

I would be as excited as everyone else, if there was gameplay footage, but it’s just a trailer people, calm down! LOL
With Naughty Dog, this game is guaranteed to be fantastic & I have every faith in them!
Nice to see a different genre & hopefully we’ll eventually see a Crash Bandicoot collection, with all Playstation titles from PS1-PS2! Doubt it but one can dream
Looking forward to gameplay footage!

“The Road” in game form? I’m in.
Too bad you made the trailer with the same tropes as THE Dead Island trailer – something more original would have been better for a AAA title that’s (surely) supposed to become a franchise.

For all those talking about I Am Legend (the Will Smith version, good movie), check out The Road with Viggo Mortensen. Similar concept to the game but no zombies.
Prepare for a dismal view of the future, even by apocalypse-movie standards.

When the Naughty Dog logo appeared on the screen I lost it. The trailer was amazing, I’m so psyched for this!

Need to see some gameplay footage before I can approach an opinion on this. Dead Island started out looking like a moody, story driven game but ended up being something else altogether. Would love for this to have echoes of “I am Legend” (the book, *not* the film).

Sounds good Sony, but I’m going to need to know more than that, gameplay wise. I’m not a fan of First Person games.. can you at least tell me it’s not one?

@tydeus
I would also hate the last of us to be a first person game it just wouldn’t feel right . I think a game like this needs to be 3rd person dead island and l4d got a bit meh quite quickly because of the first person view.

Wow!!! Another survival horror! How creative! Bravo Naughty Dog, just can’t wait!
I mean, really, is it all that most-PS3-successful multimillion-dollar company can squeeze out of its designers? Just another copy & paste setting? Jeez.

@A_Nonny_Moose
I wouldn’t count on it. Uncharted 3 took a 2 year production. But it did come out pretty good. Plus this is Naughty Dog’s new second team. They might work quicker?

So it’s another game set in a post-apocalyptic scenario where survivors wend their way across the former U.S. Sounds familiar. From Enslaved to Resistance 3 to this. Seems like we are getting the same story and yet again set on the same continent. You know we have culture and society outside the US as well. How about basing AAA games in say Paris, or Russia or even New Zealand…
