When my son talks about his favorite rock bands and the music of today, I always advise him to listen to the blues. To fully understand music, you have to look at its roots. The blues brought us many of today’s contemporary sounds. Art of any form is a collection of creative inspiration. Past masters influence resonate with today’s prodigies and new art is conceived. The same is true of games.
One reason retro gaming is enjoying its recent renaissance is because gamers want to go back to their roots. Today’s games, with their mesmerizing graphics, sometimes lack a simple hook. Graphics can become a form of marketing, which can distort the mechanics and gameplay. Retro games didn’t have that luxury.
MonkeyPaw is all about the chance to relive some of those great games that made you a gaming junkie. So today we present a title that reminds us of our fighting game foundations. Galaxy Fight is a classic SunSoft title that strangely never found its way West.
You’ll see the first time an “endless” platform was used in a fighting game and how well it influenced other games. Galaxy Fight has a rhythm that just flows into fun. Retro gaming is where you’ll see today’s games in their infancy… and you might even hear a little blues humming inside your head.
Galaxy Fight is available from PlayStation Store from 10 January, 2012.

you do know you are going to get aload of comments about arc the lad
Posted on 10 January, 2012 at 11:00 pm by Ray Almeda
Hi Guys, Thanks for caring so much about Arc. I’m glad you still do because it has been a long wait. There hasn’t been much we could do about it except let it run its course. That’s just the process. But it will be out shortly. Very shortly. The blog comment about it coming last week was mistaken but it is an indication that its at our doorstep. Please keep the faith just a wee bit longer.
In the meantime, Galaxy Fight is a really fun game. Check it out if you like what we’re doing.

You know what would be cool? That you present us a title that reminds us of our RPG game foundations, like Arc the Lad.

Looks entertaining, so I’m gonna give it a go, thanks for releasing it to us.
With that being said though, can you please share some news about Arc the Lad? We were being promised it last week, but the game didn’t appear at all, and we haven’t recieved any news on why. What’s going on?

Hi Ray, we were told that we were going to be getting the ps1 game Tombi in 2011 and we still do not have it.
quote “We’ve just sent another round of first-party titles for clearance and emulation to fill in the gaps in the catalogue (yes, one of them is Tombi so stop asking!)”
quoted from http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/01/31/psone-classics-where-we-all- stand/

Sorry but that wasn’t me that stated these comments…but yes, he was correct in telling you how the process works. Its time consuming and frustrating but that’s what it takes to get the games to work on your system. By reading the article, now you know why there aren’t as many titles as you’d like. Most publishers don’t want to go through the time/hassle to put out games that might now be financially viable. Fortunately, we’re a big different so we hope you like and play our offerings. Please check out Galaxy Fight. And by the way, we do have the license to Tomba (but it will be the US version…it is an import!)

@Mattrapid441: The article states that the game only recieved the legal clearence. They take a long time to play for bugs and all. Though I do still question it, a bit.

@ RedeyedRonin
You know what would be even better? If we received Arc The Lad 1-3, as an apology for delaying the original title numerous times & for the US receiving triple bundles of PS1 Classics. We’ve only received the Crash titles so far, within a trilogy
Posted on 10 January, 2012 at 11:08 pm by Ray Almeda
Yeah, we are very sorry for all the delay with Arc. We are very aware of your frustration and we want to make up for it. Just to let you know, Arc will be followed in trilogy. It won’t be for free but you’ll get the whole series and the Arc Arena: Monster Tournament released in Europe as well. We are also planning to get some cool “making of” the game stuff out so you can see how deep a game the Arc series really is.

Please ask Capcom. That’s not our license. They released it in the States but can’t comment on if its done well enough for them.

@ Catkiller1
We are getting arc the lad 1-3, it was hinted by one of andy’s replies stating that he wishes he could talk about it, and we will all be happy once again soon.
Doesn’t take a genius to work out monkey paw told them ohh, wait give us another week would you then they can have two and three as well, as a sorry for messing up the october release.
Of course if im wrong then s.c.e.e. really are as bad as you think, more likely though is we will wait another three and a half months to be told “it’s coming today!”, only for it not to and then continuing to repeat the same cycle of dissapointment for the rest of are young adult lives….

Posted on 10 January, 2012 at 4:41 pm by RedeyedRonin
im expecting if the do give us arc the lad 1-3 then the will post a video similar to a current ad campaign on television right now.
“now be honest you didn’t expect s.c.e.e to do that now, did you?”

@ RedeyedRonin
I remember seeing that statement form Andy. The only problem is, that he hinted they’re coming, but he didn’t hint that they would be free!
I expect 2 & 3 will release but we have to pay for them
I would like to see the Tomb Raider Classics free next month……Like that’s going to happen
Final Fantasy Origins released on the US store today, so hopefully we’ll see them too!
Would like to see 50% discounts on all Square Enix titles….that would be nice

Sup!
where’s my laddie Arc?
Nobody leaves any answers which makes both Sony and Monkeypaw Games seem unproffessional and not interested in their customers and what they have paid for (PSN+).
Why won’t you answer your customers questions?
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 8:21 am by Ray Almeda
The little laddie is coming. Sorry if we don’t always answer as quickly as Europeans might but we’re in Japan so we usually answer before we go to bed or when we get up. But we really care about our fans so please don’t think otherwise. We’re here for you.

YES! Finally! I’ve been waiting for this “import” of yours to hit the EU stores! =D
I still play Galaxy Fight to bits on my Sega Saturn and now I’ll finally be able to bring that slice of retro brawling with me on my PSP Go for some portable matches (a nice feature of the PSP Go few seem to know about is that you can actually play PSOne titles having one player using the PSP Go as controller and the other player using a DualShock 3 controller connected via Bluetooth to the same PSP Go, which works wonders for fighting games on the go and you can even hook up the PSP Go to a TV/monitor if you want).
Well then, I’ll just impatiently wait for Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty (also playing that one to bits on my Sega Saturn~) to hit our stores now. ;D *cheers*
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 10:38 am by Ray Almeda
Thanks for that great description. That’s exactly how to use the PSP Go. I’m sure not too many users are cluey on that so I’m really glad you mentioned it. It can be used on our Dezaemon Plus! (and Dezaemon Kids!) shooting games as well.
As for Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty, we’ve got that baby queued up so keep on eye out on it. Best to follow us on twitter and/or facebook.
Thanks for your support!

I’m glad to read that you have the licence for Tomba
The only PS1 titles that i’ll purchase, are the ones that never graced our European Playstations & the titles that are Rare & too expensive! Tomba is a day one purchase, as the prices on Ebay are ridiculous! £3.99 please.
I’m not sure if you have the licences, but I would like to see this year, all of the US RPG titles that are currently within their store, along with unreleased US only titles.
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 1:09 pm by Ray Almeda
Hey Cat,
We’ll do our best to bring you the games that are already in our US store (one definite exception is Money Idol Exchanger…no EU license). And any new titles we always push hard for EU release as well. So keep an eye out, especially on our twitter/facebook comments on upcoming releases. Thanks for your continued support, we know you’ve been with us since the beginning!

I really like this game and the PSX version allows macros to be added to the shoulder buttons, which really helps dashing which you’re going to do constantly in this game since there are no walls. If I didn’t already have this version I’d definitely buy it, if only for Roomi =3

Any chance you guys can can get your hands on LSD: Dream Emulator?
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 12:32 pm by Ray Almeda
LSD has long been on our “want” list as well. Tricky to get the licensing done as there are many hands in that game’s pie. But we have a certain temperament at MonkeyPaw…never give up! So we hope to someday give you that game in its full psychotic form. But bear with us as it may take time.

Great job, Monkeypaw. Keep up the excellent work. ^_^
The PAL region folks sure did miss out on a lot. I’m looking SQUARELY at Square-Enix (then Squaresoft)! Gamers in Australia, UK and Europe never got Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Brave Fencer Musashi, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon…. The list goes on. Still makes me sad.
There’s plenty of PSone games we DID GET in PAL that were rare (some go for hundreds of dollars on eBay). And I’m not just talking about Capcom (Breath of Fire 3 & 4, X-Men Vs Street Fighter, Darkstalkers), Namco (Klonoa, Suikoden II), I’m also talking about SCE titles.
I know you guys are all sick of hearing people talk about Tombi, and Legend of Dragoon, and possibly VIB-Ribbon, so I’ll be nice, but I do want to point out TEAM BUDDIES! That game was incredible, but also incredibly rare in this region. Would love to be able to get that on PSN.
I still keep my collection of 200+ PSOne games in good shape, but there’s still so many great titles I want to play from that era, so I very much appreciate the work you guys at Monkeypaw, and Sony, are doing keeping the PSOne love alive. Thank you all!
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 1:19 pm by Ray Almeda
As mentioned, anything Square is near impossible. We’ll always try but I don’t want to lift any spirits with something that just won’t give. So much good stuff but they like to keep their licenses close.
The other stuff you mentioned is from the big boys…Capcom, Namco, etc…also pretty difficult. Hey, they might decide to do it themselves someday but it probably won’t be worth it for them. Hate to tell you guys but this business is too small for big boys. Just ain’t enough money for them to take notice. Purely fan service. But sometimes strange things do happen and we just might get lucky. The moral is…don’t expect the big titles but don’t let go of a good dream as well. They sometimes happen!
Legend of Dragoon,, Vib-Ribbon are long shots. But we do have a good relationship with Sony so we’ll try. Team Buddies?! I had to google that one! Love it. Will try!

Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 12:41 pm by GenocideHeart
Is there any chance we EU folks will ever see Brigandine on the PS store? It’s one of the rarest, most difficult to find games on PSX, and it really doesn’t get enough love – it’s far better than what people think, but back then everyone was crazy about Final Fantasy (insert number here), and ignored this arguably superior gem.
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 1:21 pm by Ray Almeda
Interesting. An old Atlus title. We have a good relationship with Atlus so I can try. They usually like doing things themselves if they can but I’m happy if they put it up. We’ll give them a push.

Square has always been a black box. Great game but don’t hold your breath. Unless of course…they start to act like a normal company and look for alternative ways to make money! Fat chance, eh?
yeah fat chance so why do americans have it already then?
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 10:26 pm by Ray Almeda
Fat chance that anyone other than Square itself. They don’t do much licensing unfortunately. Sure, they can bring all their own stuff. But as I mentioned earlier, there isn’t enough money in this for them, considering how big a company they are.
Let’s hope they bring Xenogears and many of their other classics!

@ Ray Almeda
I second RedeyedRonin POST NUMBER 33.
Please try your hardest for the Discworld titles, 1,2 & Noir!
The titles mentioned, are very RARE!
Posted on 11 January, 2012 at 10:28 pm by Ray Almeda
Hey Cat,
Yeah, those really are rare! I had to google them as well. Unfortunately they aren’t Japanese, which is our specialty. We’re here in Japan speaking with Japanese publishers on a regular basis so we can get movement (ie. licenses) with them over time. We haven’t focused on games outside of Japan yet.
36
Posted on 12 January, 2012 at 12:35 am by GenocideHeart
Speaking of Japanese games, a few titles did catch my attention.
I know that due to the license hell they are, the Super Robot Taisen games are a pipe dream (otherwise they’d have been brought over long ago, there’s enough inveterate super robot fanboys between the US and Europe to more than make it worth the cost), but what about these titles?
-Bealphareth
-Bastard!! Utsuro Naru Kamigami no Utsuwa
-Lucifer Ring
-Panzer Bandit
-Nekketsu Oyako
-Tenchi wo Kurau
-Ridegear Guybrave
-Cotton 100%
-DoDonPachi
-Any of the Asuka 120% games
-ZeiramZone
-Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer
-Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken
-Makeruna! Makendou 2
-Silhouette Mirage (at this point I’d settle for the JP version for the sake of playing it at all)
-Gunners Heaven (released in EU under the title Rapid Reload, but insanely rare)
-Moon Cresta
37
Posted on 12 January, 2012 at 12:35 am by GenocideHeart
(continued, sorry for doublepost)
Aside from Bealphareth and Bastard!! (respectively a SRPG like Tactics Ogre and a RPG based on the insanely popular manga by Kazushi Hagiwara), they are all platformers, shooters, beat’em ups or fighting games, so no real amount of Japanese understanding is needed, technically.
I was also tempted to suggest Twin Goddesses just to troll other players (it’s laughably bad to the point it breaks the badness meter and becomes hilarious), but that’d be too cruel. :p

Posted on 13 January, 2012 at 12:15 am by Ray Almeda
Hi Genocide,
Great post. You really know your stuff! I love it when I have to google an old title. I’ll try to answer the chances of licensing each of these. Some we’re onto already and some we’ll get onto from now.
Bealphareth – this is an SCEI RPG…would need a translation. Probably won’t happen as it wouldn’t warrant the investment.
Bastard!! Utsuro Naru Kamigami no Utsuwa – Again, an RPG that wouldn’t warrant the investment.
Lucifer Ring – This one is can be done. We’ll go after this license. We already have a great relationship with Hamster.
Panzer Bandit – This has been on our list for a while. Banpresto to hard to get to commit but we’re still chasing it.
Nekketsu Oyako – We’ll go after it.
Tenchi wo Kurau – Capcom…they don’t license out.
39
Posted on 13 January, 2012 at 12:16 am by Ray Almeda
Ridegear Guybrave – had to google this one. We’ll try to locate the license holder. The previous holder is gone so we’ll have to put on our detective hats and search for this.
Cotton 100% – One of my personal favorites. Tried hard but too many license holders to make it a reality at our low prices. Could maybe do at a $10+ price point but we try to keep our prices low.
DoDonPachi – Another great one we’ve tried to get. Same condition. We may offer both of these at a higher price sometime in the future.
Asuka 120% – Yet another one in the same catagory.
ZeiramZone – Never heard of this one. Will look into it.
Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer – Never heard of this one either. Will pursue.
Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken – an old Konami classic. The K usually doesn’t license out but we may be able to get this one. Keep the finger crossed as this is actually a great fit.
Makeruna! Makendou 2 – a title with lost license-holder. We’ll keep on searching.
40
Posted on 13 January, 2012 at 12:17 am by Ray Almeda
Silhouette Mirage – Another one where the license holder would like more than we can give them. We’ll keep trying on this and I think eventually it may pay off. We’ve certainly put the time/effort into it.
Gunners Heaven – Again, one we’ve gone after and is still in the we’ll-let-you-know process. I think many Japanese publishers are waiting to see how well titles can do before they release to Western markets. Our advice is buy as many of MonkeyPaw’s imports as you can and then tell your friends to do the same. If we can show the license holders that there is a business here, they will be much more likely to open their treasure chests.
Moon Cresta – This one was one of our original requests. Too many license holders to make it a reality, unfortunately.
41
Posted on 13 January, 2012 at 10:10 am by GenocideHeart
@Ray: Yes, well, I know my stuff mainly because I bought a Japanese PS1 solely to play imports like those. Those are titles I never managed to get my hands on, aside from Gunners Heaven.
As for Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer, you probably know it better as Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, a fighting game on the NeoGeo. It’s not a SNK-developed game, though (I think it was Technos who held the rights, SNK was just the publisher), so it should be easier to grab than other Neo Geo fighters.
