If you’ve picked up a PlayStation Vita this week then you’ve probably been too busy playing your way through the incredible launch line-up to have spent much time browsing the Settings menu. Luckily, you don’t need to – I, along with the US PlayStation.Blog team, have spent plenty of time playing with the hottest new handheld on the market and we have put together a few tips and tricks figured out after extended play.
1. Order in the court! By now, you’ve probably figured out how to move your game and app bubbles around the Home Menu by pressing and holding one using the front touchscreen, enabling you to drag it around into different frame. You can even change the background color or image by tapping the theme icon in the bottom right of each frame. Get creative and design your own background images (which you can transfer to your PS Vita via PS3) like I did here.
2. Let there be light. You can adjust your PS Vita’s OLED screen brightness mid-game without the hassle of jumping into the Settings menu. Just hold the PS button to bring up a quick-access menu that enables you to adjust brightness and your custom music options. Wanna listen to the soundtrack to Armageddon while carving through Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus? Don’t miss a thing, baby.
3. Call for backup. Let’s face it: electronic devices have an uncanny affinity for toilets. We can’t prevent that, but we can help ensure you don’t lose your precious saved game data. Simply connect your PS Vita to your PS3 via the USB cable, open up the Content Manager on your PS Vita, and select the the Back Up option to back up all your PS Vita’s game data and gain a little extra peace of mind.
4. Say cheese! PS Vita comes equipped with a simple but game-changing new feature: The ability to snap screenshots of your in-game exploits. Just press the PS button and Start at the same time: You’ll see a white flash and hear the snap of a camera shutter and the resulting image will be saved and neatly categorized in your Photos gallery. You’ll be able to take screenshots in the vast majority of games, though not every game.
5. Prettier PSP games. PS Vita currently supports more than 275 legacy digital PSP games and more are on the way. You can also improve the way those lower-resolution PSP games look on the PS Vita’s screen by pressing and holding the front touchscreen to bring up a Settings menu where you can activate several options. Checking “bilinear filtering” and “color space” seems to yield consistently smoother results, but experiment with your PSP games to find your favorite combination.
6. Slip into something more comfortable. PS Vita enables you to adopt a custom panel to add a little flair to your PSN presence. To change your PSN panel, navigate to Settings, PSN, Account Information, and Panel to choose from a wide assortment of artwork from first- and third-party games.
7. Remote Play renaissance. Ever wish you could log into your PS3 remotely to access a video or initiate a PlayStation Store download? This handy feature isn’t technically new — it was supported on PSP — but thanks to PS Vita’s monstrous OLED screen and more powerful processors, it’s more useful than ever. Protip: Remote Play is compatible with any PSone games you may have on your hard drive, along with a handful of classic PSN games such as PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden, and Peggle.
8. Bluetooth bliss. PS Vita supports high-quality stereo Bluetooth for audio output, so if you’ve got a nice pair of Bluetooth headphones (Ahem!) you can pipe in your game audio without restricting wires. In the Settings menu, touch Network and Bluetooth Settings and you’ll be able to pair your headphones to your new PS Vita. If you get stuck on the pairing code, try “0000.” If that doesn’t work, check the manual that came with your headphones (or look it up online) to find the proper four-digit code. Now enjoy a better life — a life without wires!
9. Silence is golden. Some people like soft jazz, others prefer silence. If you want to turn off PS Vita’s toe-tappin’ menu music, you’ll find the option in Settings > Sound & Display > System Music. While you’re there, you’ll notice an AVLS option. This limits the maximum volume when using headphones — perfect if you share your PS Vita with a little one.
These are just starters – use the comments to share any tips or shortcuts you’ve discovered, and enlighten us all, because knowledge is power according to a man called Bacon.

For any 1 having problems using your remote play from outside of your own wifi area your problem is most Likly ur UpNP setting on your wifi router. If its not enabled it won’t allow thing from outside the network to get into it. On ur ps3 go to settings – network settings – Internet test. If it comes up not available ull need to log into your router and enable it through the routers web address.make sure your router has the most recent update(mine dident and I couldent get it to work took a while to figure out). Hope that helps.
P.s. if you have a vaio laptop you can use it to remote play with the ps3 also same as u do with the vita. There’s also a remote keyboard for ps3 from the laptop. Just make sure you do all your windows and Vaio updates.

Thank you for the Vita Sony which I purchased on launchday. I have a few questions:
A) The blue preorder Vita earphones are all very well and good, but aside from the mute button which comes included on the cord of the purchasable earphones, is there any other reason why I shouldn’t purchase myself a pair of those, ie are they better quality than the blue giveaway ones?
B) As you can see by my avatar I received the email codes for the said avatar and the PS Home avie items this morning for preordering the Vita. Can you tell me when I will be able to access Frobisher Says and more importantly my NZ$10 off my selected game Super Stardust Delta? I only have $15 in my wallet atm and need the discount in order to purchase the game?
Many thanks…

An other tip: the Vita won’t charge while on or on sleep via USB (for ex connected to on a computer)but it will if you completely turn it off (hold power couple seconds).
Also, as someone asked, why cant I go to max brightness while in game?

One thing that’s been bugging me is how the trophies pop up in my native language eventhough my system language is English..
Also, weren’t the trophies supposed to accumulate with the ps3 ones? On Vita I can see both but on ps3 I don’t see any of my Vita trophies and my total trophy count on ps3 hasn’t changed either..

I’d like to know if there’s a way to specifically locate and view/delete a retail games update/patch data?
My 8gb card is mostly full, and Ridge Racer has a 300mb patch installed. If I don’t want to play a game for a while, it would be nice to be able to find and delete downloaded patch data, whilst keeping save data, so that I can load the game up and carry on in months to come.
As I understand it at the moment, deleting the game bubble should delete the patch data, but also save data if it’s not backed up? So if I want to delete patch data, I first need to fire up a PS3/PC, and run content manager before I can do it? Not the most convenient thing. I haven’t tried this yet, but actually, does this process actually back up the patch data as well?
I’d just like it, if like with the PS3, I could view installed game data, and save data seperately… as well as delete it.
Now I think about it, being a PS Plus member, it would also be fantastic if I could sync Vita savegames to the cloud, and for Sony to also provide more cloud save space to do so.
Thanks for reading, I’m hoping you can help with my installed game data problem,
Vin.

Also, as others have commented, my Wifi Vita has never worked with Near. I load it, tap on the relevant control, it sits there trying to do something, I see the Wifi lights flash on my router, but it always comes back with an error that it’s unable to establish my location. A shame to be sure.

James, update on earlier mention of image copying problem:
I copied the GT5 images onto a USB stick, then onto my PC and was able to copy them from PC to Vita (via CMA) with no trouble whatsoever. I even had thumbnail images as well.
So there definitely seems to be something wrong with the PS3 to Vita Content Manager connection.
Posted on 25 February, 2012 at 5:13 pm by James Gallagher
I haven’t tested this myself and I’m not familiar with which format GT5 saves images on PS3, but will give it a try later on and see how I get on.

Every time I try to transfer content from my PS3 my vita will go in to standby and after i turn it on and unlock peel animation goes away the screen just stay blue with the status bar at the top. I’m able to lock it and unlock it but it just stays the same and when I try to turn it off by holding the power button and then selecting the option it just freezes and at the same time my PS3 sometimes freezes. When this happens I have to force the vita off. When I go see what pictures it copied it randomly copies either 2 to all and some have a ? or others corrupt. This also happens on my PC except the vita does not freeze it just stop coping the files and when I cancel the vita gives me a black screen with the status bar when I disconnect the vita from the PC the vita goes back to normal with some pic either with a ? or corrupt and again the number of pics it copies is random. On my PC is a different story my PC still thinks it has the vita attached so I try and close the content manager and then it gives me a blue screen either after a few seconds or minutes but it always gives me one.

I don’t have a Vita yet, but this trick worked on the PSP, and I’m pretty sure it still works:
You can’t watch YouTube videos on the Vita, right? However if you go into remote play, you can watch them.
Of course, like the PS3, it’s still extremely low-quality, but it works.
I hope that will somewhat satisfy people, until a YouTube app will surely come for the PS Vita.

I’m an IT student so I know a thing or two about this devices and I was never able to find a solution to this issues. I tried rebuilding the database, formatting the memory card, and resetting the vita to factory with nothing. I have also tried to rebuild the PS3 database and nothing. I also uninstalled the drivers and software and used my cleaning programs such as CCleaner to delete all traces of the program and drivers with no solution. I have a Windows Vista notebook with all the latest updates and drivers and both my Slim 160GB PS3 and my Wifi Vita are updated to the latest firmware. I have given up with this vita so I called amazon and there sending me a new one and I also returned the 16GB memory card and got a new one. Hopefully this new one does different :/

Seems to me like everything you do on the Vita involves a completely different UI and method of interaction. This thing is all over the place, really poor UI continuity…especially following the simplicity of the XMB.

@41 & 42:
The Problem is:
Turning of Music in the System Menu does not disable the Music in the Store.
74
Posted on 25 February, 2012 at 11:09 pm by X201
James, the GT5 photos are standard JPG images.
Take photo in GT5 Photo Mode, then use the “Export to XMB” option in the gallery.
Then try exporting to Vita with Vita Content Manager.

@James Gallagher: I plan on getting the PSV sometime in the future when theres more games out that I actually want to play (Theres none right now). I have a few questions if you’re still replying here.
1. I plan on buying the 3G version but I’m really never away from my router. It’s only when I’m away on holiday I’d actually use that feature. What is the fee for 3G and can I keep cancelling and subscribing at will?
2. Also if it’s Vodafone and they somehow do a topup charge, if I’ve spent a few months without spending the credit.. will they just take it off me and deactivate the sim?
3. Does it share the same PSN friends list as your PS3?
4. Will the “Comic Book reader” app be added at some point?
5. Like the PS3, will features be removed on a monthly basis? I hear the Facebook app is no longer available.
78
Posted on 26 February, 2012 at 10:33 am by X201
@Tydeus
1) You can use any 3G service provider. There’s a Vodafone sim in the box, so that you can top it up and get going straight away.
2) The Vodafone sim is pay as you go and I’m 99% certain that you can’t roll over any unused allowance to the next month. They won’t deactivate the sim though (because they want you to give them money by topping it up again
)
3) Yes
4) James?
5) There’s a fault on Facebook’s website that means the app doesn’t work properly, so its temporarily been removed from the Store to prevent people downloading what, at the moment, is a non-working application. It will return once Facebook have had the spanners out.

Cheers X201. I bought a Japanese PSP the day of launch and obviously missed out on the comic book reader (in English at least) and was hoping they’d include it on the PSV. I have quite a few comics I want to buy
2) That doesnt really make much sense, if it’s top up.. you still cant take the unused cash to next month? That kinda sucks.

@66 AlexAtkinUK
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I’d already found those settings and looked in there, but selecting games in there displays nothing, blank.
The only “Vita” games options in there are for “addons” IIRC, so I guess this is only to display DLC and the like. Sadly game patches don’t appear there.
My memory stick space seems to be disappearing. I deleted a bunch of demos to make room for purchasing Wipeout off the PSN. Downloaded that at 1.6gb or so…. that left me with 700mb on my 8gb card… I had another look later and only had 300mb free. No idea where the rest went, I’d already installed all patches, nothing else had downloaded… I can’t believe the Wipeout savegame file is 400mb… sadly the Vita doesn’t display much info regarding space taken up, to differentiate between patches, savegames, etc.

also, I had my first crash this morning!!
A mate turned up to have a look at the Vita. I showed him a few games… Uncharted, then Unit 13 demo… for some reason, once the game started in Unit 13 the sound disappeared (it was fine until then, menus had sound, and I heard the female voice describing the mission) so I thought I’d restart it. Held down the PS button, swiped Unit 13 to close it, reloaded it and it hung on the loading screen. Couldn’t do anything…. except hold down the power button, and then selected Power Off.
It crashed proper and wouldn’t power down… just had a spinning circle on the screen. I waited around 5 mins, and still the spinning circle was on the screen. Then I held down the power button, for somewhere around 10 seconds, and was presented with a menu allowing me to restart Vita, rebuild database, format card, update firmware… stuff like that….. thankfully by selecting restart Vita from there I was able to use the system again, and Unit 13 worked correctly.
My first crash! Typically, when I was showing the system to someone for the first time, a potential customer!
(he was still impressed)

Posted on 26 February, 2012 at 1:14 pm by V1N666
Ah!
Just read elsewhere that the Unit 13 demo is problematic, and has even been removed from the PSN, so it’s not just me who’s had crashing issues with this game.
Strange though, I’ve played the demo through previously, and never had an issue.

Why the hell didnt you guys just implement a mini-usb port on the Vita ….whats wrong with you people.
We love the enviroment blablabla….but we will wait for the european union to pass a new law that only allows mini-usb on electronic devices?(Just like they did with the phones).
Anyway i would like to thank you guys for giving me another adapter lying around in the house.
85
Posted on 26 February, 2012 at 5:46 pm by Tydeus
What? No mini-usb port? hmmm, can you at least transfer saves and games between the Vita and the PS3? Also perhaps access a Media server on your pc?
86
Posted on 26 February, 2012 at 5:57 pm by HawkeyePierce
@Tydeus the connection on the Vita isnt mini-usb.
The cable provided with the Vita looks like this ->
http://store.sony.com/wcsstore/SonyStyleStorefrontAssetStore/ img/718×407/PSV22035.png
So if you lose that cable youre “supposed” to buy the original sony replacement cable for 15$s or whatever.

I love how well the Vita runs old PSP games, but PLEASE adjust the area of the screen you touch to set the PSP options. Right now it pops up the settings screen without pausing the game whenever a finger rests on the screen for a couple seconds.
I bet I’m not the only one with big enough hands that it happens all the time and ruins my gameplay.
An easy fix would be to ignore touches on the left and right third of the screen. Then your fingers could rest on the edge of the screen with no problems…
But personally I’d like to see the options as a big button on the game menu when you hit the home (PS) button instead, it would be more intuitive and then you could ditch the touch screen menu completely.
Fingers crossed for a fix in the next system update

Hi,
I bought DJ Max 3 from the US store and put it on my Vita, however.. I cannot play the game on my Asia account because it says ‘the owner of this application is another player’
Since Sony made the ridiculous decision of not allowing Vita owners to access content manager on different PSN accounts, the only way I can play this game is on the US account, which I don’t want to do.
Is there any solution around this? My $20 purchase should be able to carry across PSN accounts..Thanks in advance.

another tip and trick. while the FB app has been removed from the ps store you can still access fb via the psvitas web browser. the best thing is you don’t have to keep logging in as those details are store on your Vita mem card so go to psvita web browser type in facebook.com and hey presto full working facebook logged in and ready to use. spread the word to others that have vita that you know are keen social networkers.

This PS Vita seems cooler every second, I really wanna buy one, too bad I’m buying an iPhone 5 (once it gets announced and released), as I need a portable (obviously professional) device, with COMMUNICATION features, such as a phone, and not just “Skype” or “MSN” or any of that sort, plus iPhone already has both of those.

Great tips, got my Vita a few days ago and loving it. The dual sticks make such a difference on a handheld – such a shame there’s no FPS for the Vita yet .. hopefully there’ll be one soon.
One thing that’s annoying me is ‘near’. I just can’t get it to work and i don’t understand exactly how it all works. I don’t mean about the gifts etc., no, what i mean is how the actual system works. When i walk down the street with my Vita, how does it connect to the ‘near’ server? I have to be signed into PSN to update but obviously i can’t sign-in va peoples private routers when i’m out and about… so i’m a bit confused.
I think a feature on this would be very helpful, well it’d certainly help me!

@s-p3ci4L-K
It is possible, but you have to have jailbroken your iPhone. I have my WiFi Vita tethered to my iPhone 4 via a jailbreak app called pdahotspot.
Works great, but drains the phone batteries really quickly.
@jin_kazama56
When playing PSP games on Vita if you hold your finger on the screen a seperate menu will pop up allowing you to turn on Bilinear filtering and to map certain functions from the game to the second stick.
for instance in Peace Walker you could map the camera controls from the X, Square, Circle, Triangle buttons to the stick. I’ve never played Lord of Arcana before, so I don’t know how the camera controls work on that, but if it’s similar you should be good to do it.
