It’s looking really, REALLY awesome! I’m super excited! But if I may ask, why did you choose for a prologue instead of an epilogue on God of War 3?

I am disappointed you decided to give us an origins story rather thatn continue from where III ended. I am sure it will be a great game regardless.
And what happened to Stig?

Before I write my comment I’d just like to say I’m a huge fan of god of war series.
I’m a little ticked off it’s not a sequal only because with the past year or so we had Chains of Olympus & Ghost of Sparta which to me we’re prequels in there own right.
What reasons have Santa monica studios got for going back again?
I realise that Kratos shared the power of “hope” with the human race along with desimating all the gods out there turning the world what it is today then doing the one thing he’s wanted to do from the first god of war: committing suicide to be with his dead family, I get all that but I’m so annoyed that this new game isn’t a numbered title.
I guess I need to see more before I slate it I guess. I absolutely love kratos and just want the best for him lol
With most titles that gets announced I don’t too much care for, but this franchise I really love dearly.
SSMS do us all proud.
Oh one wick question Todd Papy, are the original team of God of War 3 all back for this title?

I’m slightly disappointed to be honest after the prequels for the PSP I was looking forward to moving forward with the story in GoW4. While I know this game will be amazing the problem for me will be the fact that it will maintain the status quo of the story that is set up before it. So Kratos will still be alive the Gods will still exist at the end of this game as to allow the events of the previous games to take place which to me doesn’t sound very exciting.
So here’s my question have you already considered this and have plans to surprise the fans in a way that keeps the series fresh?

More GoW is always great news, can’t wait to see some gameplay footage. I assume it will run on the same engine as GoW III underneath?

Dissapointment for me.
i thought it would be one of the following:
a) Heavenly Sword 2
b) A God of War without Kratos in a new mythology setting, for example set in Norse mythology where a Viking of some kind tries to overcome Thor, the norse god of war for some reason. Or some other entierly different mythology. alternativly set in a Hindu equalence, or Asian or as far as the South American indian mythology.

So, ok, set in a time before Kratos was consumed with rage but I bet anything you like the game is just Kratos killing thousands of things with little or no remorse….

Hello Todd,
Good news indeed, I recently finished Volume 2, and thoroughly loved going backwards in the chronology. To do so again, but in a PS3 title, will be very good indeed.
Just two questions for you (if you are able to answer):
1) Can we expect to see gameplay footage at some point this year?
2) Will you last longer than one game as Director? There seems to be a curse going about where nobody lasts longer than one game!

Here is a transcript of the trailer I have just done:
“Many know the legend of Kratos, the mortal turned God who brought down the very walls of Olympus, but there was a time before Kratos became the monster known as the Ghost of Sparta.
A time when something other than rage consumed him.
A time when, in spite of the madness that plagued him, Kratos would break his blood oath to an unjust God.
A time when he would no longer be bound in blood
God of War Ascension”
The question for me at the moment is where does it fit in chronologically, clearly it is before Ghost of Sparta but does that mean between GoW & GoS, between CoO & GoW or before all of them?

And good work tearing up the ‘legit’ teaser trailer – honestly, do some people have anything better to do other than make a fake trailer?
Always wait for the real thing, that is lesson 1!

To be honest, I was expecting something radically different from the previous games, I’m disappointed to see that you decided to go with the same character and setting and go the easy way with a prequel. I hope that you at least did some significant changes to the gameplay, this is the 6th GoW game, I hope you’re aware that it’s not that easy to get people excited at this point in a franchise’s life.

Anyone still asking if this is a prequel at this stage really needs to listen to the teaser trailer again. REALLY listen this time… flipping hell.

After playing all five God of War games (and Dante’s Inferno, which is a shameless copy of GOW’s) within a year or so, I am pretty much done with Kratos unless there’s a serious overhaul in the game mechanics. I mean: they are good games, occasionally great even, but they are all basically the same with very little innovation after the first one.
Kratos is cool though.

People really need to pay attention to the friggin’ trailer. This is either before Kratos made the pact with Ares or while he was working for him and before he killed his family. Or maybe even both.

Who ever said this is going to be a prequel? Yes “gaia” states his “history” about a blood oath, but, they did the same thing in the opening movie for GoW3, they re-iterated the entire storyline? At the end of the 3rd game, Athena goes to “a higher power” if you all remember? The Definition of Ascension:
as·cen·sion/əˈsenSHən/
Noun: The act of rising to an important position or a higher level.
Whats not to say hes going even higher? There has not been confirmation on any of it. I think This is great news. Good going Sony. Wether or not its a prequel. I will love it. *Thumbs up*

Thank you so much for this announcement, really looking forward to playing this
I enjoyed playing the “origins” collection, well here in the UK it was called volume II but anyway really enjoyed them. The Q still remains, will it be a 2012 release? Maybe round the end of october cause thats my birthday (fingers crossed) & it’s been rumoured that there will be either co-op or multiplayer involved, is that true? I know you probably can’t tell us but I look forward to seeing more of this game very soon
You can have my money now if you want HAHA!

Really. Read between the lines. I say again it’s a PREQUEL. The ascension IS Kratos beginning his path of becoming the god of war.
Doesn’t take a genius to spell it out dude.

Finally! A little weird that it isn’t numbered and has an undertitle but I’m sure you guys know what you’re doing. God of war 3 was my absolute favorite, really got the pacing right (puzzles used to slow down the action too much imo) and technically and graphically it’s the best the genre has to offer. That Epic Scale trailer from GOW3 is still one of my alltime favorites. Oh, and all those people expecting or wanting a new protagonist : this is why gamers shouldn’t have too much say in these matters.. Kratos is one of the most intruiging characters ever and he is god of war, I wouldn’t want it any other way than with him.
Now I’m just silently hoping for co op to extend the replayvalue, other than that I hope it’s a lot like the third, they really got it right there imo.

Interesting,
I love were GOW is taking place.Greek Mythology is the largest and the best. You can’t compare it with any other. But again Kratos?I am Dissapinted. For some reason i thought that it will have online and 2 sides would fight together. For example people vs monsters(Medussa etc).It would be Great lol
GOW story isn’t that great so an online mode wouldn’t hurt at all i guess.

Brilliant another gow game however I ain’t liking the idea of a prequel. Most fans are very invested in the trilogy storyline and we want to see what happens next especially with the way GOW3 ending and how his brother has been mentioned a lot in the series. I don’t want to wait another 3 years for the next GOW game to get these answers.
My only hope is this story goes from past to present through out. Shows Kratos and his brother fighting together before Ares took him then shooting back to the present were his brother carries him away at the end of GOW(assuming it was his brother)I’m not sure how this game will work. Is it set before he killed his family? before he made a deal with Ares? around the time is brother was taken? or when he first started doing Ares deeds?

First up,yay.
Second,I really dont like announcing announcements. Most suspected GOW,you get people hunting down and leaks,it was just teaser for a bigger push later.
Third,so glad that engine is getting another showing, some of stuff done was mental.I’m still blown away by the distances and how smooth the camera and Kratos could travel in the blink of an eye.Add high framerate, insane IQ,depth of field, and running in HD.I can’t wait to see what improvements were made.
Forth,I’m glad it’s PS3.Yes Vita needs something that will actually push systems, but for reason two,I’m happy.
Roll on first footage, then it’s media blackout time

Looking forward to this and getting my sixth God of War plat along the way, lol
I wonder how powerful Kratos will be if this is a pre-CoO though and what abilities he’ll have. It’d be nice to have a little more depth to the combat and how enemy AI plays, even on God Mode each game can still be played as a game of two combos throughout.
It has the potential to be awesome if Kratos has some good motivation besides vengeance, can’t wait to find out more story details. Also I’m glad to see this isn’t a portable game, although another one would be nice I much prefer to play GoW on the big screen.

Am Very pleased to have the opportunity to play another GoW, i Could play a New prequel/sequel or Any Kratos, Greek Warrior and their Gods kind of game pretty much Every Day, So ppl who are leaving negative ‘another’ ‘again’ comments, go tell the cod blogs and Expect similar ‘thoughts’ !.
About the preview, No comment, Just nowhere near enough info there to form a solid view of how this story will look or play, but i just need to see Santa Monica And Kratos, which is/will Allways become a magical end product.. So timeframe ?..
Also don’t want to see either co-op or multi, but thats Not a major prob if it is added, just my own preference.
