PlayStation Plus has changed!
By now, you’ve probably seen what’s going on with the US PlayStation Plus update in June and the ‘Instant Game Collection’ and I’m certain you’re all excited to see what we’ve got in Store for you too.
Well I’ve got a lot to go through with you so brace yourself and please keep your arms and legs inside the blog post at all times.
So let’s cover all that shall we?
First of all, you’re still going to get MASSES of discounts on all kinds of stuff in Store, both Plus exclusive and extra discounts on Special offers.
You’re still going to get exclusive dynamic themes, avatars and access to beta trials – in fact we’ve got some truly fantastic betas coming before the end of the year for you.
Then, there are the games. From now on, the watchwords are more and better. More new games, more digital Blu-ray, more of the very best the PlayStation®Store can provide.
You’re getting 10 games up front and from next month, 3 of those games will change, and you’ll get at least 3 games per month thereafter.
The important thing is that whenever you decide to join PlayStation®Plus, there will be a minimum of 10 games for you to start playing right away.
So which games? Let’s go take a look. Oh and if you see a number in brackets, it’s a Metacritic score for your reference.

PlayStation®Plus Presents
Not content with offering you those 10 titles I also have another small announcement to make – here in SCEE we’ll be running a little sideline within Plus called ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents…’
We’ll be searching for the very best independently developed titles for PlayStation 3 right now and in the future – those games that really stand out we’ll hand pick for our Plus subscribers. Each ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents’ game will be available to download in Plus at no extra cost for 8 weeks from the moment it launches on the Store, meaning that as well as blockbuster titles, as a Plus subscriber you’ll be able to play the very best of indie too.
Our first PPP title will be an extremely cool little shooter called Retro/Grade – it won the Audience Award at IndieCade 2010 and was a finalist for Excellence in Audio and Excellence in Design in the 2009 Independent Games Festival. I urge you all to go and check it out because you’ll get to play it soon enough.
Retro/Grade is just the first such title that will be available at no cost to Plus subscribers when it launches later this summer.
Now you know what’s yours for the taking, I’m sure you have some questions. I’ve tried to answer a few pre-emptively below.
What about my PS one, PS2 and minis?
Based on all the feedback we’ve had from you guys over the last couple of years, we’ve decided that our subscribers would be better served by offering you more digital Blu-ray titles and top of the line PSN games, rather than scrabbling around to find a compelling PS one or minis titles. That said, if a truly awe inspiring minis title or one of the greatest PS one or PS2 titles that ever existed suddenly shows up on PS Store, you can bet your britches that we’ll secure it for you.
How come SCEA subscribers get 12 games and we only get 10?
It’s true, SCEA get two more games than SCEE subscribers up front.
However, most titles in SCEA Plus will stick around for 16 weeks before being refreshed – in SCEE we keep games for a maximum of 12 weeks, which means we rotate through more games in a full year – in fact we are committed to delivering over 45 games to you as part of your subscription before June 2013, and that’s before we factor in any extra minis or PS one titles that might show up. Additionally, any ‘PlayStation®Plus Presents’ games will be extra to the standard game rotation.
Will those 45 games include repeating games that have already been offered in Plus from the past?
As you’ve already seen, some of the games that are being provided to you may have been discounted in Plus before – we will try to keep this to a minimum. We’ve committed to offering only the absolute best games available on the PSN Store, which means meeting a minimum quality requirement. I cannot guarantee that you won’t be offered a game that has been discounted before but there will be more than enough brand new titles and games that have never been in Plus to provide you an astonishing amount of value, even if you purchased all of those discounted games previously. What we won’t do is ever offer something that’s been included as a 100% discount title before unless it’s a true ‘second-chance’ offer – that means it doesn’t count towards your total.
—————-
Guys, while you’re reading this I am almost certainly asleep in a strange bed in California so please bear with me – I will do my best to respond to as many comments as I can while I’m here at E3.
In the meantime, I want to see feedback, I want to see suggestions for games to be included later in the year, I want to hear anything you have to say about these changes!
In the meantime, enjoy the anticipation of receiving five top class digital Blu-ray titles, four of the best of the Store’s back catalogue and one brand new PSN game, all still just £39.99/€49.99 for a year’s subscription.
And of course, if you join right now, there’s still time to get May’s content as well.

Hurm. This is unfortunate for me. I signed up for PS Plus last month, specifically for the PS1 and PS2 titles. Seems that Silent Hill and Max Payne are the only ones I’ll get to play.
There’s a lesson to be learned from this, but I’m not sure what it is.

Im so sorry, so sorry I’m tired i only had 3 hour sleep after E3 had end
i did more number maths you are spot on ross we rato faster so we get more content then scea gets plus 1 extra that don’t count dont think SCEA got that.
anyway here my maths:
you set off 10 games 3 of them are there for a full year that makes the other 6 changeable but 1st change is the game of the month.
then 3 of the 6 get change the other 3 have to wait a other time to get change.
so 3x new games x12 month = over 45 games.
that right ross.

Actually I must admit I’m a little disappointed that we don’t get Saints Row 2 on this side of the pond, can you tells us Ross if this is likely to be addressed at any point or is it a publisher issue between US/EU?

Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 3:36 pm by Nightmare966
OK Ross, you guys at SCEE gained one more suscriber with this
Question I have: I know free Plus games are useable only while on suscription. What happens if I couldn’t renew for 6 months and re-joined, would I still have access to previous content?

Wow thanks so much Ross and the PSN plus team! This is amazing
I can’t wait to play Infamous 2

Well this update to the service sounds good to me & I’m happy to hear you won’t be focusing on giving us Minis anymore, with ps1&2 games I’d rather be given discount on as there isn’t that many of them I would want.
What I would like to see next is Vita being apart of Psn+ to.

Gosh I’m going to need a 10 terabyte hdd lol.So glad that I never bought Chime. I loved the demo but had too little cash at the time. Shame I just dont time to play as much as when I was skint.

How are people still complaining about this :p
Btw, does anyone/does Ross know how to see when your subscription is over? I’d like to know when I need to renew

I would really like to get Just Cause 2. When I saw it on the big screen as one of the US games at the press conference, I was hoping that we would get it, too. Is there any possibility of getting it next month, or…?

Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 3:49 pm by RichieBoy
@154 I recently re-subscribed to + and was able to re-download Burnout Paradise which I got for Free when we all had our free PS+ after the PSN outage, so you should be good.
162
Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 3:49 pm by Skookie30
@ Nightmare966 if you don’t renew within 6 months you will lose your cloudsaves in cloud storage & that be sad it save me from grief my saves are safe.
like catkiller said this is iceing of the cake great AAA titles FREE at the expense off cutting back on minis & Ps1 classics & 2 PSN titles.
if they still do the old plus & if do vita plus i can see a price hike in plus services.

Nothing for me. Another £40 saved along with the pathetic attempt at money laundering through Battlefield 3 DLC, a complete ripp off!!

Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 3:52 pm by bigdaveg
So glad i just upgraded my hdd to 1tb, sounds like i’m gonna need it!
Also think it might be time to switch autodownloads back on!
Only concern with this is now we are not getting free minis and psone titles i’ll be getting no more free stuff for my ps vita!
Free Music unlimited service for plus members would be suitable compensation (or a discount)

So instead of expanding onto the Vita you pull back from it altogether? Disappointing.

Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 4:02 pm by dgnfly
instead off this how about improving the godamn store for once we have the most lackluster contnt on any regions store. we still missing army off content and before we know it well be getting the same games again like so many times.
this isen’t even a improvement start with actually getting more ps1 classics and other gamesfor psn. SCEE is nothing but a laughing stock which hasen’t improved in 5 years. atleast SCEA has something 2 show with psplus they got content 2 show how great PSplus is you guys got old content that the plus users keep getting offered over and over again.

No Ratchet and Clank baffles me – it’s Sony’s game, so licence is non-issue. Loves Chime and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath.
Also yet again, customers paying way more get 10 games instead of 12 – not that I care any more, don’t have time to play through my backlog and will probably have even less.
I suppose going to unified PS+ experience is not something Sony cares about – strange and confusing decision IMO, but what do I know.

A stroke of pure genius! Wish we had this earlier on PS+ but better late than never.
Well looking forward to playing them.

and you just made it a whole lot sweter.

This is brilliant. Some may say the US gets better games but that can be argued.
Having less games at the start but rotating more is better.

a few questions:
1. These free games, are they available to 3-month subscribers?
2. If a game is removed from the games library, will it be still available to subscribers who have already downloaded it?
3. If my subsription expires and i renew it after a few months, will i still have the content i had before?
4. I am browsing the PS Store on my PS3 but i cannot see these games to be free
Thank you

Will we get the PSVita version of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD when it’s released?

Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 4:17 pm by Willelmus
A great revamp. Never really got into minis and well, i already played and finished most ps1 titles when I was a kid. I was already glad I purchase plus a few months ago (I mean recieving Trine2, Shanks2, far cry 2 and shift2 for free was balls) now I feel I’ve just died and gone to heaven.

Sounds great to me…. very happy with the new system and games.
Prefer these games to the US ones and like the fact that EU games will get swapped more frequently than US ones!
Will need a bigger HDD at this rate….
Speaking of which you need to increase the Cloud storage and make copying ‘all’ an option on the XMB for game saves.
Been a Plus member for a year or so and will defo keep it running and it’s good to see the service evolve.
Can live without minis and PSone on the Plus… but you really need to support the Vita with some Plus Love and Cloud storage for game saves etc.
Also what is the score with PSone games on the Vita… is it just a select few that will be available in ‘summer’ or will all my PSN PSone games be playable??
Any news on Remote Play?????
I’ve read GOW 1,2 and ICO and Shadow of Colossus ‘should be’ playable??
Again any Vita news would be good and needed news!!!

Hi Ross,
Just curious what happens if you add a game to your download list but don’t download it, will it expire or will you still be able to download it?
I do that all the time because I like to save downloading till the last day in the month that way I don’t have to worry about going over my quota.
So if I add Darksiders for instance 15th/8 to my download list but don’t actually download it so it’s not activated, and it’s not sitting in my download under the XMB, will I be able to go into the download section on the PSN store and start downloading on say the 29th?
Thanks!
183
Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 4:24 pm by pb-live
Great work. Wanted to play Darksiders again as I didn’t complete it before giving it back.
I too want to see Vita PS+ and Ratchet and Clank.
My one concern is that when the PS4 comes out eventually, all the PS+ stuff we’ve accumulated will be lost unless its backward compatible.
184
Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 4:26 pm by pb-live
@181 – if you go through the usual steps and put it in your download queue then you’ve effectively ‘bought’ it as far as PS+ is concerned, so, yes you can download another time even after it goes out of PS+
185
Posted on 5 June, 2012 at 4:30 pm by Rhys001
This is all great, and will probably convince me to stick with PS+ for at least a while, but can we PLEASE get some Vita perks with PS+. Sony showed almost no love for the Vita during the E3 conference, it’d be nice to get some kind of appreciation for being an early adopter for a (handheld) console that already seems to be forgotten.
P.S, I realise you already addressed the PS+ for Vita issue; this is just me adding my voice to the others in the hopes it convinces Sony that there is demand for this.

If you’re taking suggestions for games to add to the list then I’d request Siren Blood Curse. I always wanted to give that a try but the price tag was a bit much for me.

That’s A W E S O M E !! Great upgrade, i’m glad i am a plus member and great E3 by Sony. I already own some of the games up there, but it’s inevitable i suppose. As suggestion, Could you add Mass Effect 2 in the coming months
? Thanks!

Ross, it’s true that you guys get a lot of flak about Plus updates, but this is a superb initiative. Congrats, and here’s hoping it’s successful.
I’d like to request Rayman Origins as one of the upcoming highlights. Seeing how many people originally thought it was going to be a download only game, it seems fitting that it would become a Plus feature.
Cheers.

So we can download all the games listed above? Just when I thought I got my head around this, somebody popped up in another blog entry to say we can only choose three of the free titles. That’s not true, is it?
We can grab all the free titles just as long as we get them by their respective expiry dates? Right?

If you have a little wiggle room Ross, could you please add Ratchet and Clank to the list as well ?

Great Update! The EU Collection is better than the one in the US Store. Finally getting to play Darksiders!
And thanks for your tweet to get PS Plus, Ross. Followed your advice, bought it a few days ago and now im really glad I got it! Some great games coming up + Awesomenauts and Max Payne. Guess I don’t need any new games in the coming months
Just a Question: I downloaded the Darksiders 1 hour Trial. Do I have to download it again tomorrow or can i use the Full-Game unlock?

By the way: Those of you upset about not getting Saints Row 2 like the Americans, I’m not sure I’d lose too much sleep over it. While I enjoyed the game, I think it’s an awful port. The graphics are awful ( very pixelated with lots of vertical tearing) and the physics are atrocious. Driving cars feels more like driving cardboard boxes. It comes nowhere near Saints Row: The Third in terms of quality.
Easy for me to say “don’t be upset about that!” though I suppose because I already own it.
