MUBI Update: 7 June 2012

You may have heard that MUBI did something very exciting in Cannes: we debuted a new camera and a new film. The camera is awesome; we partnered with Lomography to make a special MUBI Edition version of their LomoKino, a 35mm hand-cranked moving image camera. Lofi, old school analog silent movie making!

Our camera is approved by Thai master filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won arguably the most prestigious film prize in the world in 2010, the Palme d’Or of the Festival de Cannes. To show what one can do with the LomoKino, we produced a new film by Apichatpong, which he calls Ashes. It’s a twenty minute reverie, diary and dream:

“In Ashes, which was shot almost entirely on the LomoKino with a digital finale, Apichatpong contemplates love, pleasure, and the destruction of memory. The surroundings of everyday life are shared with extreme intimacy. For Apichatpong, Thailand, while full of beauty, is slowly collapsing into darkness.”

Ashes is now playing worldwide on MUBI for free.

And if you’re a fan of Apichatpong — as you should be, since he’s one of the world’s greatest working filmmakers! — don’t forget that Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is playing in the United Kingdom; his short film A Letter to Uncle Boonmee is playing worldwide; the film that topped many Best-of-the-2000s critics polls, Syndromes and a Century, is playing in Spain; and his Jury Prize-winning Tropical Malady is showing everywhere but Austria, Germany and Italy.

I had a chance in Cannes to sit down and talk to Apichatpong about his two films in Cannes, Mekong Hotel (a new short feature) and his MUBI-produced film, Ashes. To read that interview go here.
