What? It’s the weekend already? Where does the time go? Ah yes, I know – it goes on sitting in traffic jams and queuing to get onto London underground trains, fighting ones way through the 20 million-odd out-of-towners who’ve descended on our nation’s capital this week ahead of a certain imminent sporting event.
Seeing as it all finally kicks off this evening, it seems like the perfect moment to reflect on memorable sports-related video games of yore. So, this week’s debate topic:
What’s your favourite sports-related gaming memory?
It needn’t be a full release – feel free to pick a particular mini-game, or even a side-mission from a non-sports related game that might be relevant.
I’ll confess that sports games aren’t really my scene. I went cold turkey following a health-threatening International Superstar Soccer addiction back in my student days and haven’t looked back. So my pick to get the ball rolling stretches the parameters of the debate a little – playing ‘zombie golf’ in Dead Rising 2. That counts, right?
Anyway, your suggestions below, if you please!
As promised, I’ve got a prize this week for the best comments received – there are 10 PSN vouchers for lunatic PSN romp Eat Them! up for grabs. Don’t remember it? It debuted back in late 2010 and lets you step into the shoes of an enormous beast and smash up a city. Good times.

It’s simple, the original Track & Field!
Who can forget the immense fun of alternately bashing those buttons, discovering the excellent T-Shirt rubbing technique or just how much you underestimated the stamina required to set a new 100m swimming record.
It remains the most fun athletics game around

What have you done Fred, it seems you have a desertion on your hands!
Oh well, in that case I’ll add another.
Next up would be Sensible World of Soccer (still the greatest football game of all time) but more specifically the 12-13 minute summary of the final league standings of every football league and cup in the world at the end of each season you played. Oh and by the way, no it couldn’t be skipped!

The first memory that has popped into my head is of Emlyn Hughes International Soccer on the old Speccy. Every Sunday a few of us would gather at the specified house for an afternoon of football and spectacular long shot goals… but most important was the cheese rolls for lunch to keep us going.

Phew, some more replies.
I thought I was going to have to nominate my third most memorable moment as the time a sports based blog discussion was totally ignored on the opening day of the Olympic games! lol

Nintendo World Cup on the NES – if you kept hacking a player enough times, they stayed down. The fun with multiplayer came from trying to litter the field with bodies until one player remained to just walk it past the keeper.

Beating my older cousin at Fifa 2003 for the first time. To put it in to context, he’s about 5 years older than I am, and I hadn’t been playing the game long, and had little multiplayer experience. He was so upset he cried a little, well that’s how I remember it anyway.

This topic reminds me of a holiday I took in the late 80′s.We went to San Francisco, and ended up at a park overlooking the bay.On the left was the Golden Gate bridge,to out right Alcatraz. It was a great view.
I found this bag type thing, and started playing keep it up with it.A crowd gatherd and started cheering me on,it was amazing.I just did a shoulder flick with it,before I smashed it volley straight up.That’s when I heard a thud.I’d smashed it into a seagull and killed it.
I felt so bad,I lost my groove and couldn’t continue.Poor thing didnt stand a chance

A whole host of memories, but the most physical would probably be the first time I played Kinect Sports…man did I underestimate that!
Track and Field on the NES was another that sticks out. My gaming co-ordination was poor back then!
Recently though, realising that Everybody’s Golf on the Vita automatically saved Chip-In Birdies etc when I was looking around in it and replayed some of my cool shots! It’s a shame you can’t upload you shots directly to Youtube….

The login system on the site wasn’t working for a while (it kept going back to the login page after I entered my details and proceeded) so that’s probably why there wasn’t many comments right off the bat.
I don’t play many sports games but me and a few mates created our own.
A Game of Stairs – Played on the Villa Map in Call of Duty Black Ops. There is a room where there is only one set of stairs going on; he who holds the stairs for longest wins. In the game of stairs you either win or you die.
A Clash of Fish – Played on Rag Doll Kung Fu. The one who tosses the most fish into the basket wins; the physics make this hilarious. The price of glory is measured in fish.
A Motorstorm of Swords – played on Motorstorm Pacific Rift. One guy is a bike, the other a truck. The bike must avoid the truck. A seperate event is dueling trucks in which both played drive at each other. The survivor wins. Trucks cut deeper than swords.
As you might be able to tell we were pretty into Game of Thrones at the time.

Since I spend so much time gaming, and I was never one to actually go outside much (the graphics are pretty rubbish anyway), I consider winning the Blitzball Championships in Final Fantasy X with the hopeless Besaid Aurochs against the mighty Luca Goers to be my finest sporting achievement to date. I worked my guts off for that Championship!!

For me it has to be International Track and Field on PSOne. getting a group of mates round and plugging in the 4 pad adapter for a party session was brilliant, the sound of 4 pads being battered while you did the 100m is a sound that still lives with me today and everyone had their own special button bashing technique thet swore by. at the end everyone had a big smile on their faces and very sore fingers

My favourite moment has to be whilst playing Sports Champions. I was loosing in the last match of a gold gladiator tournament so I decided to play lacrimosa by immediate music on in the background to try and spur me on. As the music became more intense I started swinging all over the place as if I was fighting for my life, knocking things over as I did. When I won I burst out and yelled “YEAH!” at the top of my voice and sat down. I was dripping in sweat but it was worth it.

I remember renting a copy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Video Game for the playstation when I was younger and me and my family for most of the weekend would be playing it to see who could win the most events.
We even had a trophy for the winner (The trophy was a toy WFF Belt that we had sitting around and usually a couple of pounds thrown in for good measure)

As Fred Dutton I also have pretty much abandoned classical sport games after ISS Deluxe and NHL 94 (or was it 95?). These days I prefer racing and the FM series.
But my moment of glory regarding sport games these days … QWOP, no doubt. When I managed my “natutal” step forward. Later beaten by the experience to combine two steps! That was real satisfaction.

@Fred.. yeah ‘zombie golf’ in DR2 is ok, But surely the chainsaw+motocross bike one is a bit better.. anyway, (btw don’t want a code, (today) thnx) i have to say the grav, or no gravity basketball part in middle of Dead Space is prob going to be a hard one to better, (imo, of course (lol) ). i mean i ‘think’ i needed to do it, ie score 6or7 ‘baskets/goals’ in a short timer to continue on and get the plat, but still, very sureal xp considering the games setting/theme, i think Dead Space2 had a similar event, though the reward for beating that was power-nodes/other items, similar to shooting gallery in RE4.
So Fred it’s start of olympics etc, why isn’t there any God of War games in ‘sports or summer sales’ surely a title involving ancient Greece woulda made better sales or prize items ?.. fingers crossed there going to be added. as even though i finished all of em i would rebuy them again, for a reasonable price that is… have a good weekend.

California Games on the Atari Lynx.
Already a long times games player then, being able to take my gaming on the road (train actually) and having people just staring at this (quite big) device, having better graphics then most console, PC and certainly handheld game at the time, and just hugely addictive games. (once networked with 3 friends coming back from a game fair was a bit over the top though.)
Oh, and it also thought me why 16 bit unsigned counters for scores are a bad idea. (starting at 0 again after 65535)

Would have to be in Fifa 11, there were a couple of great moments in that. 3-0 down at half time online, playing against Man Utd as Arsenal, and then coming back to win 4-3 in the 90th minute was amazing.

Smackdown vs Raw 2007′s creation mode.
It was the first WWE game I had ever tried, and the creation mode blew me away, with how you could modify almost every single little bit of your wrestler. unlike most games, it actually fealt like you created a character, you didn’t just choose between a bunch of prefixes.
I would even dare say the WWE games have the best character creation in the history of gaming. (Not counting abilities, stats and such so – which you would usually see in an RPG game – as “character creation”).
Seeing a person that really feels like your own creation, in any video game is always a pleasure, especially in sports games. It really allows your fantasy to take over – which in my opinion, is what sports simulating games are all about – and it gives you a really enjoyable experience.

Nintendo World Cup on the NES is definitely my favorite sports-related game memory. Nothing realistic about it and I loved it when I was about 7 years old. My friend and I just constantly tackled the opponents to injure them leaving them out on the ground the rest of the game and frantically pressing A+B to do a bicycle kick or pressing B I think to constantly do crazy ‘headlong dives’ all over the field.
All of it looked so funny and crazy at the time, being one of the first games we played to death. Best thing? Each country had their own special Super Shots, almost unstoppable for the other goalie. Just pure awesome!
Just find the Nintendo World Cup ►ALL SUPER SHOTS◄ video on Youtube to see for yourself and check out the goalies going down and flying all over! Classic!

It happened earlier on in the year, My dad had challenged me to a game of FIFA 12, but he asked me on the Monday and said that the match would take place on the Saturday, ‘Great’ I thought as this would give me more time for practice, so I used the time to my advantage.
Little did I know that my dad was waking up extremely early on a morning so that he could do his fair share of practicing and funnily enough when the Saturday came round we played the match.
It ended the first half at 2-1. But for me the second half was a disaster, I ended up from going 2-1 up to losing 11-3, I was absolutely gutted to say the least…

Playing PES 5 back on the ps2 with my cousin. At every family gathering we’d disappear for hours doing half hour matches of Chelsea vs Man Utd and Real vs Barcelona. We were so closely matched games could still be goal less after the end of a match

International Track and Field on PS1 with a multi-tap and 4 players was just amazing…my work mates and I used to go to my house at lunch time for a quick bash. Once we perfected the button bashing using the cuff of your sleeve technique, we were setting World Records left, right and centre. So addictive, competitive and yet simple – most games were a two button affair, but that made it even for all and a pure skill based contest. Great stuff!

One word, four letters: QWOP. Everybody has played it, you all know what I’m talking about. You thought it was going to be just a stupid flash game, but then you press the first key… two minutes later, you can’t stop crying from laughter. Five minutes in, frustration and anger; WHY CAN’T YOU JUST RUN PROPERLY?!

I’m taking a more technical point of view on this. The biggest feat on sports games has to be ‘Pong’ the original tennis game, which was also the very, very first video game. This is the mother of all games, sprouting not only hunderds and hunderds of tennis related games (including break-out and all its clones), but ANY video game.
Creating the game turned out to be quite a nightmare, and almost cost the creator his job. Once it was released, the cat was out of the bag, resulting in the gaming-scene we now know. Not only was Pong the very first video game, it was also the very first gaming console. IT could be connected directly to a TV set, and gamers could choose up to 8 different Pong related games.
This game actually got me into gaming, back when I was a little boy. I played Pong to deatch! Little did I know what was to come

As for bar sports, I have a honerable mention. The recently released Foosball 2012 is a great table soccer game, but technically, it is a marvel. The creators really managed to do everything right. Controls are excellent, either with the Dualshock, and one/two Move controllers. It’s probably the very first game that doesn’t suck when using the Move. Moreover, the perfect, seamless integration of PS3 – Vita connectivity, including cross-platform play and seamless and automatic savegame sharing, everything works as it should be.
Really worth a big applause!
So there you have it: Nostalgia and cutting edge technology combined in one post. have your pick!

I’d have to say it would be a Zelda mini game. Bowling with Bombchus in Ocarina of Time.
30 rupees to try and win some awesome stuff, and get a heart piece if you master the art of chucking bombchus. Loved the psychadelic colouring, the explosions when you get it just right and of course the stuff you got for use in the rest of the game. A solid example of a mini game done right as it ties into everything else (and Bombchus were a fun weapons to boot).
Not quite olympic, but that’s my favorite e-sporting memory!

Maybe not the greatest, but it certainly sticks in my mind.
When playing any track n field or buton mashing game. My mate used to lick his thumb then rub it vigorously across the two buttons required to perform the running or power up action.
First we thought it was funny when one of my other mates game in for a game and was handed the sleb covered joy pad for his turn. We stopped laughing when thought of the amount of times that we had been in my mates house for some gaming.
So next time you go to your mates house for some gaming , take your own joypad or some anti bacterial wipes.

Pro Evolution online. Some guy got sneaky and picked his Master League team. He had all the best players in the game(Ronaldo, Messi etc) with a very attacking formation 3-4-4. I was Germany. He had 25 shots on target and I had 1 which came in the 88min. Score? 1-0 to me
. Lets just say he was far from happy.

I read there is a Tapper http://youtu.be/Yy5j0L6o6ns style event in London 2012.
I vote Tapper as my favourite sporting relating gaming memory, the fitness you need to run up & down the bars keeping the beer flowing. It’s easy to create a non-gaming version at home too, a few mates/beers/tables. A sport that the weather doesn’t matter either !
Good exercise for the legs & arms plus the need for perfect timing = The perfect modern sport !

I have to submit two, because I can’t chose between them!
It’s either, 1. Drunkenly trying to do trick shots with my friends on Hustle Kings just after it came out.
Or, and this might edge to the front, Chicken hurling in Crysis 1, then being able to recreate that with it’s PSN release. Seeing how far you can lob a chicken with “Maximun Strength” and seeing if you cn kill a fool at the same time, with said chicken!

We used to play tag at school during sport lessons to warm up, so my best memory is: playing Tag in Timesplitters 2. One player was on fire and had to tag another, who then burst out in flames, etc. The one who had the least ‘on fire’ time at the end of the match won.
It was an awesome twist on the shooter gameplay and was the perfect ingrediënt for roars of laughter and fun while playing in splitsscreen with friends…
