The Making of Wonderbook: Book of Spells

BoS_August_01 BoS_August_02

Wonderbook is a project that we are incredibly excited about here at PlayStation. Although we only announced it a few months ago, our team at London Studio has been working on the technology for years.

We sat down with the studio team to create a series of “making of” diaries that give a closer look at the development of Wonderbook. To kick off these developer diaries, the team focused on the core technology that helped to form the foundation of the project.

Wonderbook: Book of Spells is the product of our collaboration with J.K. Rowling, and this is the first story that comes to life on PlayStation 3. Learn to cast Incendio, Wingardium Leviosa and Expelliarmus, with your very own spell book and wand.

Wonderbook: Book of Spells will be available in three offerings:

The Wonderbook: Book of Spells Move Bundle includes everything you need to start practicing spells on your PS3 system:

  • Book of Spells game
  • Wonderbook peripheral
  • PlayStation Eye camera
  • PlayStation Move motion controller

If you already have a PlayStation Eye camera and PlayStation Move motion controller you’ll want the Wonderbook: Book of Spells standalone:

  • Book of Spells game
  • Wonderbook peripheral

If you are new to PlayStation, the full console bundle will also be available at launch.

Stay tuned for more information on Wonderbook: Book of Spells and additional titles for 2013 including Diggs: Nightcrawler, BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs and experiences from Disney.

@3. What has hacking the vita got to do with wonder book ?

Hello Nathalia

At E3 Mick Hocking, who is the vice president at SCE Worldwide Studios was asked wheter or not Wonderbook Book of Spells would be translated into the Scandinavian languages (Danish, Swedish and Nortwegian). He said that he would look into it and get back to me with an answer. Unfortunately I have not heard from him yet. I also asked the Scandinavian Team Leader (DancingTurian) at Gamescom and unfortunately she was also unable to answer it despite visiting the Wonderbook booth. The main reason for asking this is that J.K. Rowling’s “Pottermore” universe has not been translated into these languages. So I was wondering Nathalia if you could shed some light on this.

What direction are you taking with new content? Will all wonderbook games be discbased or will there also be content available through the PlayStation Store?

I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this piece of technology and seeing what it can be used for. Will the game offer some kind of User Generated Contents, or is it “developers” only?

    Hi there,

Wonderbook: Book of Spells will be in all Scandinavian languages, I am happy to confirm.

As for new content – we have announced Diggs Nightcrawler, BBC Walking with Dinosaurs and our relationship with Disney – stay tuned for more details on those.

@spagetti69

Guess they deleted that post.Damn want to say something about it now.

Um,on topic I guess.I’d buy the Diggs PI game if it wasn’t for the poor res of the Eye.I know it’s response time is fast, but things like EyePet,and the AR based games were we see our living rooms, just look horrible with it.

I don’t think this will sell that well, iv’e yet to meet anyone who wants one of these, the amount of time it got at PAX and E3 was horrible.

*gamescom is what i meant.

Sure hope the wonderbook continues onto the PS4, my daughter is too young for this right now but in future i’ll certainly be up for getting one. In the meantime if you guys could release a ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ book like ‘Game of Thrones’ then i’ll be picking it up instantly.

Love the Idea. Saw the Game on Gamescom, but the Main reason to not buy this Game is the terrible PSEye Cam. If there was a better Cam i think the Game would sell better. I think it gets fast Budget like the other Eye Games like Eyepet, Start the Party, Eye of Judgement. Its a shame! Release a better Camera please.

I have an extremely important question about this game. How many languages will be available on the disc ? It is important most european languages are available on the disc since this game is essentially made for a young audience.

Is Danish language included in the disc like it was the case for EyePet ?

And what about the lighting conditions ? The EyePet Magic card had lots of limitations in this matter. Any improvements on this ?

I played Eyepet before and too be honest, the quality on the Eye is just horrible. If Sony released a better quality cam, it would sell.
