Hi everyone, I hope you are enjoying catching up with your friends and family using Skype on your PlayStation Vita. Today I’m happy to announce that this great app will have new features which let you enjoy connecting to even more people.
You can now create a new account directly from your PS Vita system, as well as search for friends on Skype and add them to your Contacts. You can also use “Favourite”, “Online” and “All” to manage your list of contacts.
If you want to change your profile photo, just use your PS Vita system’s front or rear camera to take a new photo and replace it. Or you can simply use the photos in your PS Vita collection.
The new features do not end there, either. You can now add Skype Credit from your PS Vita and make calls to mobiles and landlines if the person you’re calling is not online. You can also receive or delete voice messages directly from your PS Vita.
The update will be available from the LiveArea screen of Skype – just select the update icon to update Skype and enjoy all the great new features. If you do not have Skype for PS Vita yet, head over to PlayStation Store now – it’s free to download.

Hi Mayumi, please tell us something about the Paint Park competition. Near 2 months passed since it ended and still not any news about it.

Will Text chat be added to the app? I occasionally use Skype due to friends who also use it, but never really use it’s sound or video functions, so the Vita app isn’t very useful to me.
Regardless, it’s nice to see it getting updated.

Great news, always nice with updates, but I hope you add a feature wich prevents me from using Skype on Vita, that it can run in the background and you can talk with people on skype when still playing a game on the vita, currently it’s not possible, I hope you can fix this in a update aswell!

Updates are always welcome BUT the vita Friends/Messaging apps need to be updated and combined. I really dislike having three separate apps that should all be one unified function. Text / Background usage will be appreciated.

Still no textchat. Here’s a wild guess : more people use Skype as a chat-client, than a voicechat-client.
And, oh, you know what would be even more awesome (?) – the ability to run the app in the background while playing games.
No? Well i’ll just continue using the Skype-app on my iPhone then.

It’s nice that it’s been updated, but this really could have just been put in the changelog. It doesn’t need a blog post as there is nothing really special about it.
Games don’t post about Bugfixes, so why should Skype?

Also, we need text chat and increase more memory for people who has too many contacts. Fix that too.

I can’t believe text chat wasn’t added in this update, it should have been there from the start!

Thanks for and update.
First the good thinks:
1. It works (and fairly good).
2. Sound quality quite amazing I must say comparing to any other Skype app on other devices – the noise / background humming almost non-existent.
3. Fair quality of video
4. Using of both cameras
5. Usable UI
Now the bad ones though:
1. Missing TEXT chat.
2. The app doesn’t remember the latest status it was on – like the Online / away / invisible mode as well as the view mode (all / favourites / onlines) and always defaults to Online mode with all contacts displayed which is frankly quite annoying as I’m used to have that set on all other devices to default to either Busy or invisible with only favourite contacts being listed so needs to be changed every time the app is started here – please fix this!

3. Can’t switch off the screen while on voice only call – quite annoying when you’re using this in night or for a long calls as it both distracts with the fairly bright and unpleasant image (even after turning the brightness all the way down in Vita’s system menu) and eats up your battery when out and about (which is a big FAIL for a portable device!), also it unnecessarily heats up the Vita – I’ve actually managed to first time OVERHEAT my Vita due to this “feature”. I was using it in night for a long call as I was fairly annoyed by the strong light it was still producing during a voice call I’ve covered the screen with a piece of thick cloth (as turning the Vita screen down will dampen the sound) and after hour or so Vita displayed the message about being overheated and shutting down some circuits. Please allow dimming / turning off / auto dim of the screen for voice only calls.

4. Dropping call if you push PS button – this is VERRY annoying as I use the (long press of) PS button to both decrease the brigthness during long voice calls (see point above) as well as active the MIC / prioritize the BT MIC if needed and many time I’ve got the call dropped if the button is pushed just briefly or by accident. Please FIX this.
5. Missing in app volume control – can set volume via Vita when using BT headsets.
6. Only touch controls – not really ergonomic as well as not to everyone taste. Simply allow control by both touch as well as buttons and don’t bulge under the pressure to push hard “touch only” controls – there is really no need for that, is it?
It’s good to see the app is being improved and developed further – let’s just all hope it will take the right direction. If (most of the) above points would be fixed I can say I’d be hardly using any other device to skype anymore.
