If you have been a regular visitor to the PlayStation Store over the last two years, you will probably have noticed the various changes we have made. During that period we invited many people from the PlayStation community around the world to come and participate in focus groups and one-to-one user-testing sessions in order to help us understand what we were already doing well and, more importantly, where we could improve the PlayStation Store.
Thanks to the invaluable feedback and insight we gained from the community, we were able to make incremental improvements to the old store and, at the same time, develop a set of design principles which would help us create the all-new PlayStation Store that we’re launching later today.
So, what’s new? Almost everything! We’ve still got all the latest and greatest games and DLC for PlayStation 3, PS Vita and PSP. The biggest changes are to do with how you find the stuff you want. Whether you’re looking for the latest AAA release or a PSOne Classic, it’s now so much quicker and easier.
When you launch the new store from the XMB, the first thing you’ll see is the What’s New section which is, essentially, the store’s homepage. What you’ll find here is a mixture of the latest content to hit PlayStation Store that week.
The old store’s homepage was made up of a ‘mosaic’ of product images (or banners) which meant visitors to the store could see at a glance what was new or on offer. We wanted to keep this mosaic idea intact with the new store but really focus on making browsing through the great new content we have every week much more fun and visually immersive.
You told us that you wanted the PlayStation Store to be a much more HD experience and much more like the great PS3 games we all play and love. So, what we’ve tried to do is create a design where the products really are the stars of the store.
When you scroll through the What’s New ‘carousel’ (or any of our new ‘feature categories’ – more on these later), you’ll see what we call a ‘Hero’ on every page. As well as the Heroes, we’ve continued to use the mosaic idea, which you told us you liked, to display the rest of the content on the page. With the average TV screen being much larger and sharper these days, we’ve tried to make all of our featured product images as big, as sharp and as clear as possible so that we can deliver a store that feels like a truly HD experience.
You told us that you didn’t ever want to feel like you had reached a dead end anywhere while you are browsing. We’ve tried to address this in every area of the new store and, here at the end of the What’s New carousel, you can see that we provide ‘see all’ links to the different types of content you’ve been looking at so you don’t need to go back to the menu (if you don’t want to) to continue browsing.
As well as What’s New, you’ll find more of these new ‘feature categories’ with Heroes and HD product images throughout the store anywhere you see a ‘Latest’ or ‘Most Popular’ category ‘above the line’ in the menu. ‘Above the line’ is a concept you’ll see throughout the navigation and in search as well. It’s our way of indicating that something is ‘featured’. You can expect anything you see ‘above the line’ to be have some sort of featured presentation style like a carousel. Anything ‘below the line’, will be a much more familiar experience to regular users of the old PlayStation Store. So let’s have a look ‘below the line’.
Regular product categories should look pretty familiar in terms of their layout. What we’ve focused on here is making everything much clearer to browse and understand. We’ve made the product images bigger and we’ve provided the key information for each product right next to the image. So, now the title, price, content type and the platform the content is playable on are always displayed clearly.
Speaking of content types and platforms, you told us that when you’re browsing the PlayStation Store you don’t want to see PS3, PS Vita and PSP content all mixed together. So, we’ve created separate sections within the Games category dedicated to PS Vita and PSP. They’re easy to find and make browsing through content for those platforms much simpler. At the same time, it makes browsing for PS3 content, which is what most people are doing on the PlayStation Store on their PS3s, much easier.
When you do dive into one of the product categories you’ll see straight away that we’ve added two key features you told us you wanted: sorting and filtering. Now, in any category, you can filter the products being displayed in one of a number of different ways such as by price range, game feature (e.g., online multiplayer), accessory compatibility (3D TV, PS Move, PS Eye, etc.). As well as filtering, you can now sort alphabetically, by release date and by price.
Everything we’ve done to improve the browsing experience, both in feature categories using carousels and in product categories using grids with sorting and filtering, has been with the singular goal of helping you get to the kind of content you’re most interested in as quickly and as easily as possible.
But what if you’re looking for a specific title?
We’ve completely overhauled the search functionality from top to bottom. You told us that it took too long to perform a search and find what you wanted. So, we set ourselves an ambitious target: to design a search feature which would allow users to get to the content they were looking for without having to enter more than three or four characters.
We’ve replaced the on-screen keyboard with a ‘tumbler’ text input. You enter each letter by scrolling up and down through the list of characters. Each time you add a letter, you’ll notice two things: firstly, that the list of search results on the right-hand side is updated and, secondly, that the list of characters to choose from shrinks so that you can only select letters that will complete a title which contains that sequence of letters.
If you’re searching for LittleBigPlanet, for example, by the time you have input L-I-T using the Tumbler, you’ll see LittleBigPlanet appear ‘above the line’ in Top Results. Top Results will always show what people have been searching for most based on the characters you select. So, the more people who search L-I-T and then click on LittleBigPlanet, the higher that product will then appear in Top Results.
This is one of the many ways we’re trying to make PlayStation Store more dynamic and have it reflect what people are actually doing in the store. As people use the search more and more, so the search experience improves for everyone.
Search is only one place in the store where what you do shapes the overall store experience for everyone. Whenever you purchase something, you can give it a star rating. Not only will your star rating be added to the overall rating displayed on the product page but it will also help drive the Top Rated chart in our Most Popular categories.
Star rating is not a new feature, but the fact that it now drives our Top Rated chart certainly is. Loads of you are using this feature already but, if you haven’t done so yet, get involved. Top Rated in Most Popular is your opportunity to tell other gamers what the best of the best is from your point of view.
Also in Most Popular, you’ll find the Top Downloads chart which, as the name suggests, shows you what the most downloaded products are that week.
Speaking of products, let’s have a look at a product page and how it works. One of our biggest challenges was making sure that you could find all of the content related to one product as simply and easily as possible.
So, we have created a brand new product page which acts as a portal or hub for all of the content for a given title. As you can see on the LittleBigPlanet example above, at the top of the screen is the most important information for that product, such as playable platform, file size and release date, as well as the different ways you can get hold of it – whether that’s buying it, playing the demo, or even downloading a trial version you can play and then unlock later to turn it into the full game.
Further down, all of the add-ons, themes, avatars, and videos for that product are also displayed on this ‘parent page’ as we call it. You can scroll through all the content on the right-hand side like a web page or you can jump quickly between the different sections using the quick links on the left-hand side of the page. If you do click through to one of these related products, getting back to the ‘parent page’ is now easy.
You told us that, in the old store, pages for add-ons were difficult to find and that it was often hard to tell which content an add-on was for. In the new PlayStation Store, if you arrive at an add-on page via search, or via a category page for example, it should now always be clear which game that product relates to. At the top of the page, you’ll find that information in the title area. You’ll also find a (Game Page) tile which shows what the ‘parent product’ is and links straight back to it.
So there you have it, the all-new PlayStation Store. Easier to use, quicker to find the products you want and designed with your feedback in mind. But this is not the end. It’s just the beginning of a journey that will see PlayStation Store evolve over time. We’re planning to drop in new features and make updates every month or two based on the backlog of features we’ve already got lined up and on the feedback we get from you.
We couldn’t have produced what we have without your amazing input and feedback. We’re really proud of it and we hope you like it.

just had a look arond the new look store, 1st impression really good, i agree with fellow users in our neighbouring countries who have already got the new store, it is a little difficult 2 navigate at 1st, but 1 improvement i like is if u try 2 download an add on for a agame but u cant say for example because u dont have something else that needs 2 go with it, it tells u this, but before it didn’t it would just let u download it, there for buying something u cant use and not been able 2 get a refund, this will eliminate that now

i like the new disign, all the missing dlcs i could not find on the old psn store no more i can find it now (like white knight chronicle 2, knight atefact weapon dlc)but there some dlc i could not find such as dissdia 012 music dlc(all), tekken tag 2 music pack A(contain t1,2,3 and tag1 music dlc), white knight chronicle(1) dlc. by the way i found some psp games in the ps3 section(and maybe not found in the psp section) such as dissdia 012 and tekken 5(psp, i think, i don’t remember there being a no online version for ps3, it say it for ps3 cost about £8).

I am in two minds with this store. It looks better however it has a number of issues.
Firstly, why have you relegated Plus from the front? To see the latest Plus content I have to delve through several menus.
Secondly, it lags. Nasty.
Thirdly, the sound effects? Why so dull, lifeless and dark sounding?
Fourthly and possibly my biggest gripe now – To download a Plus item for free I am directed to a cart, then the checkout, I then have to confirm my purchase of a FREE item… and finally I am allowed to download it.
This was actually a step backwards as it now takes me several times longer to get my free plus items than it used to.
Its a start, but you have some work to do Sony as right now it feels more like a Beta.

I’ll say this here too. Now that I can finally see the new store, can I make some suggestions?
1. Please remove the giant banner that takes up 1/3rd of the screen when browsing Plus. It is monumentally annoying.
2. Could we please have some display options like before, to view content in a list or as tiles and so on?
3. Bring back the “New This Week” section so I can see the whole update at once. Currently, if I want to see the latest DLC,I have to go through Games > Latest > PS3 Add-Ons > 3 pages of whatever content is being advertised > All Latest Add-Ons, and then sort them by release date.
4. Sort the themes and avatars into categories again please. There’s over 1000 dynamic themes on the store and browsing them is a mess now.
5. Could you make it so all the Plus content actually shows up in the Plus section? Super Stardust Portable and Starhawk Campaign are still on offer I believe, but are nowhere to be seen. Before they were in the “Freebies” section of Plus, but that section is gone now. Likewise, Double Dragon Neon appears on the Instant Game Collection spread in the Welcome section, but not in the actual Instant Game Collection section.

Why was a new store released? There was nothing wrong with old one. It was very easy to navigate, and you got rid of the quick to use keyboard and replaced it with this new scroll down stuff. And it’s slow.
Ever heard of the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”?

Just tried the search function to see how it worked.
I thought I would look for Xcom as it’s new. You can’t get past X, as there is no C to choose.
Rubbish when you consider the xcom demo is on the front page.

Ok, I’ve tried the store and I have made up my mind on what I think about it.
First off, the asthetic/look of the store: It’s quite nice. I like the new ‘look’.
Secondly, why in gods name would you guys think it was a good idea to remove the PlayStation Plus section from the front page? Considering PS+ people are paying customers, I assume you’d want them to have easy access to the PS+ section by having it on the front page.
Next, my complaint about the search bar in my earlier comment stands, it is slow, unintuitive and annoying. The auto-fill idea was great yes however what if you want to filter out EVERYTHING but the game you want?
I typed in “Tales O” and there is no f so while I have my Tales of Graces f, I also have Shinobido: Tales of Ninja, Tales of Graces f, Tales of the Rat Fink and Thor: Tales of Asgard. A better example is illustrated in another comment where someone wanted to search for XCOM but there is no C after they enter X
To get back to the front page, I have to hit circle once for each letter, I mean really?

The new way to download doesn’t bother me as much as it will some (the Add to cart, view cart, etc) but it was much quicker in the old store so I don’t get why that was changed at all.
The lag I am chalking up to the store being new for the moment.
That is all my comments on the store, I’ll add one more here: Whoever designed the store, even if the look of it is nice, the designers absolutely suck in the usability department and all I can say is I hope all the complaints get through to you guys and that the PS Store gets updated with improvements while keeping the new look.
ty if you read this rather long comment/feedback.

I had a go at the new Store and gotta admit looks pretty good thus far. But it needs minor improvements, Sort the DLC/Content into one folder like for example ”UMVC3 DLC in the UMVC folder” so it’s easier to find add-on for the game, bring back the keyboard option so you can search for content easy but overall, good update but needs minor tweaks.

well just like the the XMB size increase was forced upon us the PSN Store has now got huge tiles making it so we see less and have to scroll through even slower (in some plus screens we lose another 50% of screen real estate to a banner telling us of the discounts we’re trying to view)

Couple of things…
Firstly, i would really like to see Gifting. So you can Gift (pay for on the behalf of..)an item on the Store to someone else, which would say pass on a Redeem Code to their e-mail address.
The reason i ask for this is mainly for items such as Avatars which range from 20p – 40p each (from what i have seen). When you have a Little one who really wants the Phineas and Ferb Avatars but you can’t as they only show for the Purchasers account it is a bit of a downer for them…and the relatively small cost doesn’t justify a minimum Wallet amount of £5.
Also, Last point about the new store (which i like!) is the last store showed Games, Demos, Add Ons, Themes and Avatars all on One Screen. The new one however doesn’t even if i select All Items.
I love how the background shifts moving from different Tiles, nice pleasing little feature.

Hi, I like the new store look, but any chance of adding a download now button or automatically setting downloads going when you exit the store?
This would speed up getting demos etc, rather than going through add to cart and confirming a £0.00 transaction.
Thanks

Monoliet, show mercy. Do you have the slightest idea how horrible your English is?
“jes some ting are beter en some are bit ???”
Seriously, you mix French and English all the way and you barely write one single word correct. And that sentence wasn’t just one rare example.
“then de large midel place = give option to not chow reason : i not use”
Ouch!
Not to mention your usual habit to “construct” your postings with tons of + – =
Why don’t you post on the french or dutch blogs when you can’t handle this at all?

It would be nice to know why the silent hill dynamic theme in plus suddenly disappeared after I downloaded it and why it is not in my download list…and lastly, why does it have the background image as paranormal activity 4 in it. That’s not silent hill is it!?
Apart from that, I like the new store.

I mean after i did the update my ALL Downloads are now downloaded 16-10-2012 (the day of PS Store update) and there all messed up! How am i suppose to find something in a number of 1300+ things?
Please tell me what i can do. I really hope you insert a Search option in Downloads list.

But it really needs a Search option in Download list, don’t you agree?

The new store is great, a marked improvement over the old one. Finding content is easy and intuitive and the new look is very nice. I hope all the people who are complaining would take a step back and just remember how far Sony and gaming have advanced in the past five years. No system is perfect and people should realise that there is no entitlement to a perfect system. This generation seem to think that every company owes them something. Time to grow up and realise that Sony engineers are only human and doing their best. Do you think that any company is trying to fail in today’s economic climate? So come on people; show a little love….the bugs will be ironed out:)

I have an issue (if anyone’s still looking at this page). When I do a search for Dead Space 2, I find the game, but it only gives me the option to buy the add-ons, despite the fact that I got it from PS+ and it’s in my download list, and when I try to get Wipeout HD for PS3, it tells me the unlock key needs to be downloaded to a PSP and then when I go to download the full game, it changes to Wipeout 2048 for Vita…. this is very frustrating

The last set of DLC for Tokyo Jungle came out recently.
I KNOW it’s on the store, you can purchase individual animals from within the game itself, but not the animal packs (which saves you a considerable amount compared to buying animals individually)
But the new content does not show up on the PSN store. In fact, some of the OLD content, content that IS ON MY DOWNLOAD LIST is not listed on the PSN store. Only 9 items are listed under add-ons. It’s missing all of the new content, all of the free items and the first animal pack. Before the “new” store went live, all of this (sans the new content) was in the store.
Why Sony Europe? Why would you do this to me?

Here are some of my suggestions to make the store “better”.
1. Search.
Please bring back the old search. Not everyone has a low-latency connection, and using per-letter search over the network is just very inefficient. Sending one “Playstation All Stars Battle Royale” is far quicker than “P”, “l”, “a”, “y”.. you get it. Even if I type just up to “Playstation” and it would show up on my list, it doesn’t matter, it still takes longer this way than just sending the whole exact string. I don’t *WANT* to see other results.
2. Utilize Screen estate better.
Currently when you choose a category on the right side it chews up half the screen height to show you the category name again, which is ALSO displayed on the top right corner *AND* also highlighted on the left side. Instead, utilize all the space to show as many items as possible. I know each item has been made larger, but I would suggest to make it a ‘tad’ smaller (not as small as the old store but not as large as it currently is). I think the result would be excellent with just a small tweak.
3. Load times.
The current store takes more than 3 times as long as the old store to load up. Fix it please.
484

4. Use unified icon sizes.
It is a disorienting to wade through the content with constantly having to adjust to different thumbnail sizes. The human brain is much better at picking up patterns, this is just causing more brain cycles to be used for adjusting to VAST differences in size of thumbnails. A more traditional grid with maybe 1 or 2 different sizes would be best if you want to highlight certain items for prominence. Use a subtle back-glow to items that are “hot” or even a glowing “flame” animation on top-right of each item.
I hope you consider these changes.

Its still very slow, very ugly to look at, the new releases are found in menus or all the way to the right, search is ridiculously slow with a keyboard , when you go into for example the discount list there is an un necessarily HUGE banner that takes up the majority of the page and is not needed.
Honestly, can you not continue to support the old store, everything about it was better imo x_X

Hi Elliot,
Firstly, great work with the new PS Store! I, for one, think it’s excellent and the facelift was just what was needed.
Secondly, could we please have a ‘wishlist’ facility added to the store? -I buy from the store on a regular basis, but there is always more on there that I want to buy than I can afford in one go.
So, it would be really useful to be able to keep track of these items so that I can simply buy one or more quickly and easily when I do have the cash without having browse back to each item in turn every time.
I think this feature would benefit many people, not just me.
Wha-da-ya-think?
Phil.

Not a big fan of this new store. Its slow, messy, and the search facility is useless. Apparently there are no games that begin with the letter R. Tried searching addons instead and am left to wade through a pile I’m not interested in just to find the ones realted to the game I’m lookging for. Surely this cant have escaped the testers before relase. Overall, numerous crashes and a frustrating hour seaching for addons that used to be simple to locate and download. I gave up in the end!
It looks to me like they have tried to do too much all at once and just ended up bricking the whole thing!

In all honesty, I very very much dislike the new store, it is terrible compared to the previous one in my opinion, feels like a downgrade in all honesty. Wishing there was a setting to return it to previous layout at least. And preferred the keyboard style way to type in on Search, not this old fashion.. thing. A lot slower for me to type through. Also in search it doesn’t even have icons like the last did which was more helpful searching for things or getting a basic look at them in the little icon. Basically the whole layout itself and lots of little things make this disliked by myself.

I just finished trying out the new psn store and wow it defiantly feels like a downgrade more than anything. Going through the add on menu felt like i was wading through a flooded basement add ons floating everywhere without organization. I eventually just gave up trying to find what i was looking for. This whole thing just feels very unnecessary sure it looks pretty but i don’t care I’d rather have a store that works correctly so I can buy, download, install, use asap I would defiantly love to have the old store back least then I could find everything quickly

The new store looks pretty and slick at first glance, but once you try to use it then it becomes clear it just isn’t half as good as the previous version.
Trying to navigate through that mess is a pain and I’m never sure if I’ve found all the new titles, add-ons etc. You shouldn’t have to sift through that many menus (which are laggy) to get to something.
When trying to view something like the latest add-ons it lists each individual add-on rather than grouping them by game, which just clutters up the list needlessly. At least with the last store you had the week’s releases all in one place and grouped together properly for less clutter.
Also, the search function on the new store is just laughable. The previous version’s option to use the PS3 virtual keyboard was clearly much better.

MONUMENTAL FAIL
Store takes up to 5 minutes to load, can’t find a damn thing in there and a whole bunch of games I PAID FOR are missing from my download list. Which is now an even worse mess than ever. I’ve sunk hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds into the store, but you won’t get anything else from me until you revert it…
Not to mention the new XMB ‘features’ such as in-game trophy sync which causes horrible bugs/crashes on online games such as Borderlands, the now-hidden trophy menu, and obnoxious Singstar launcher.
Put it all back the way it was and we can pretend none of this ever happened. Seriously, all this new junk is so over-engineered and pointless, we need SUBSTANCE – not Sony’s misguided concept of style!

@Elliot. Your guide above is totally wrong and its in stark contrast to my experience with your new FAIL of a redesign. I cant find anything. Uncharted 2s page for example? DOESNT have the DLC add ons, so i click Add ons > All Add ons > Sort A-Z but lo and behold…..the A-Z is a total MESS!
Some DLC is listed under the A-Z by the GAMES title like Saint Row 3rds add ons but the vast majority are now sorted in the A-Z by the DLC add ons name!
Whose stupid idea was THAT? I hate this new design and so does every single person who i have heard from about it. Put dlc under the GAMES title in the A-Z. For Pete’s sake mate this is schoolboy error stuff here and i am embarrassed at the minute with this and that damn Singstar icon to admit im a PlayStation fan!
