I promised you exciting news, so here it is! SingStar, the ultimate competitive singing game for PlayStation 3, will now be available to everyone in SCE Europe territories (as well as Australia and New Zealand) as a free download straight from the XMB.
Yes, that’s right, no more need to slot in a disc to get that party started. Simply install SingStar from the XMB and you will be able to start singing in no time, share your performances with the community and visit the SingStore to get hold of more great tracks for your collection.
I’ve listed all the great things about SingStar on the XMB for you below but I am most excited about the fact that you can now play SingStar with your PlayStation Eye camera. We have spent many an afternoon testing this in the office and are pretty pleased with it so please let us know what you think! This will only work for single player mode, so if you’re gearing up for a serious SingStar battle, you’ll obviously still need to plug in some mics.
If you’re brand new to SingStar and have never bought a song from the SingStore before, there are also some short demo songs available for you to download and try out.
SingStar on the XMB:
- The SingStar game client is FREE, no disc required!
- Sing with PS Eye
- Compatible with SingStar microphones, official PlayStation Wireless headsets and common USB microphones
- Short demo songs available for download for new SingStore customers
- Easy access PS2 and PS3 disc swap from song carousel
- Use PSP or PS Vita to create playlists with SingStar Remote
- Instantly share your performances with the SingStar community and your friends on Facebook
- Acquire new trophies
SingStar will be added to the XMB very soon. Follow us on Twitter @SingStarHQ and keep your eyes peeled on www.singstar.com for more news and a confirmed release date.

Can you set up a disk-for-digital trade solution? Here is how you could do it:
People interested in this could log in to a website with their PSN account. There they could select the SingStar disc that they would like to convert to digital format. They would then have to print out a form with this list and a bar code, and then send all the discs (just the discs, not the covers) with this form to a specific address. When you received the discs, you could just scan the bar code to get the list of discs up on your screen, and then do a quick check to see if this was correct. If so just click on a button, to have the download codes e-mailed automatically to that user.
Then there wouldn’t be any risks of misuse or breaking any content restrictions.

Great idea but discs and the SingStore are two seperate things so I don’t see this happening in the near future.

@ Project2insanity
That was a hypothetical extreme, I didn’t think you’d take it so literally.
Perhaps you don’t use your PS3 to play many games or don’t mind having no choice on matters but neither apply to me and so the analogy remains valid.
Is it really so outlandish to ask for the option to remove something which is unwanted and obstructive? No.

have you not read any of the comments including mine? YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DOWNLOAD IT IF YOU DO NOT WANT IT….get a grip man

@ neostorm
The download is optional yes, the icon is not and will remain present whether you follow it through to the install or not.
Thanks for tour concern

finaly I can ditch the smeging specific mics that were a pain as they were not rechargable but need rechargable batteries at an extra cost.
USB wireless mics with built in batteries yea.

The solution is simple. If you don’t like the logo, ignore it or saving that get an Xbox. There problem solved and toys back in the pram.
Now please, take your dummy and stop crying. It’s a an icon on a screen…geez its not the end of civilization as we know it.
Not enough positivity on here, people always have a gripe about something or other, gets depressing.

Personally, I think this is BRILLIANT news. Hopefully it will mean
1) Better, and more, songs released now that more people have access to SingStar, and
2) People will watch my Zombie video, rate it nicely and I’ll finally get that flippin’ trophy!
Would LOVE to be able to back up my videos though… I was devastated recently when my PS3 decided it would format my entire HDD… I lost years of SingStar videos from great fun parties… it’s as if someone broke in and burned all my photo albums. I can never, ever get those great memories back
I also lost over 250 hours of Skyrim! CURSE YOU, PS3! I don’t want to scare people though, it was during a disc scan from the secret system menu… it went “yeah, found a problem, hang on, I’ll fix it… [tries to fix it]… nah, made it worse, now I have to ERASE YOUR ENTIRE GAMING LIFE”.
Never use that menu! I’m a techie nerd so I knew what I was doing… sadly, the PS3 didn’t.
Backup and restore to cloud, or USB, even if encrypted, PLEASE! This is the second time I lost lots of SingStar memories… it hurts.

Sorry ;( We’ll watch your Zombie video though!

@MikLSP; You said it yourself, it was a hypothetical ‘extreme’. By that alone, it would appear some part of you realises how far out of proportion you’re taking this.
Again, I will said you’re correct in part: “Is it really so outlandish to ask for the option to remove something which is unwanted and obstructive? No.” But is it really so outlandish to throw the rattle out the pram over something so little and causes absolutely no harm? Yes.

Nina, you make me laugh. Haha. I meant that I take my PS3 to my beach house. Hehe. But I have already traveled with my PS3 on a plane twice

Nina – will you please look into this –> http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/SingStar/Cannot-purchase-new-songs-you-have-reached-the-maximum/m-p/17301702/highlight/false#M18913
It seems once you have bought a certain number of songs from the singstore that you run out of further entitlements to buy more. Surely this cannot be right!? How can preventing me from buying and spending money be good for business? I am so frustrated as i have plenty of hard drive space, money in my PSN account and am getting this message appear when i try purchase songs?
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 10:20 am by Nina Scherer
The team are already looking into this and i believe there will be a message posted to explain soon…

& Also please please pelase remove this stupid restriction fo only allowing users to have 1000 songs on their PS3 at any one time. The whole point of me buying the downlaods was to cut down on the amount of times i have to change discs during the game. I have about 60-70 songs at the moment that arent on the hard drive because of this restriction .. At no point do i ever recall knowing about this!? Surely more and more people will start coming across this restriction and having a similar gripe about it as you push the downloads .. let us store whatever we want on our machines please.
Please dont forget your hardcore fans who ahev spent thousands of pounds on this franchise so far in favour of this more casual gamer approach!
Thanks.

Oh god, NO. NO. NO.
I don’t care if it’s anywhere on the XMB just not under Game. Do you even comprehend how many people you’re going to [DELETED] off? I understand moving the trophy collection but a pointless icon in the way of games I actually want to play is NOT the way to go. You must scrap those plans ASAP or people will be moaning about it at every chance for months to come.
[DELETED] were you thinking?

I guess the moderated bits mean you are really pleased about it. Thanks, we’re really proud of it.

Pretty great for those of us who have old Singstar discs lying around and never got round to picking up the new ones.
Also, thanks for not sticking the Singstar icon right at the top of the game list above everything I chose to have there and given me the option to stick it in an album..oh wait…

@Project2insanity you are right.
Sony is forcing some icons on the XMB. Most of them you can change so it’s not a techical thing. It’s the same with the Store icon that is in more places then it should be.
But when you went on PSN you sighned your soal to Sony. If they were customer friendly they would let you change them. Guess what.

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 4:11 am by brucewillis215
Dear Sony please move that Singstar icon to music category or put it into services category. there are many that will be displeased with this change, we will whine until that Singstar icon is gone from the game category, i bought tbe disc version of Singstar but i don’t want to play him again and i seriously don’t want him where my trophy collection used to be.
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 10:33 am by Nina Scherer
Well, you’ll have to whine for a looong while then, I guess.

Firmware update and new Singstar is out.
It’s at the top of your games list whether you like it or not and there is no way to remove it. However, it doesn’t actually download the app unless you tell it to, which is a bright side.
But i downloaded it anyway. Never played a Singstar game before. Might make a fool of myself tomorrow (when everyone is out of the house…)
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 10:34 am by Nina Scherer
…and then you upload your video to the community for all to watch? No? Why not? Have fun!

Can you make it optional for our XMB. I have no interest in this singing stuff, yet its now in front of my folders of games i do play. Why wasn’t this just an optional download in the new ps3 store you just released…..
69
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 6:02 am by BEYOND-14
Please. Please make this optional. Let us remove it from the XMB. If we want to re-download it in the future, why can’t we just get it from the store?
At least move it to the music section. Please, this is ridiculous.

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 6:08 am by monoliet
Just to be clear, I won’t be on the XMB, that would be a little difficult. SingStar will.
But, I can answer your question. SingStar will sit under the game category, underneath the PlayStation Store logo. Unless one of your discs is inserted. Then it will be under that.
With courtesy,
Nina
nina = u not corect = i got patch en i not got game
but i see singstar on xmb
= very very very disepointed = i not want .

People saying to ignore the icon and suggesting those who moan about it are childish are completely missing the point.
I don’t like this and I cannot hide it. This to me, is effectively bloatware.
Sony have placed a game I have no interest in playing ABOVE my own games that I do want to play- it’s about the ethic, if I can’t hide it, then we should be insulted by the clear dismissal of our opinions.
74
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 6:43 am by Dark-Twisted
The icon is WAY out of proportion to anything else in the column, maybe even the whole XMB.
Did whoever design this go to design school? ughhhhhh. and Why does the trophy have online mode at all? How about just save everything syncved to the server onto the PS3 instead of me setting it to offline mode and not having to download my own trophies every single time? UGH. Why are you so stupid, Sony?!
75

Please remove this Singstar icon from my Game tab right now! That is all.

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 6:51 am by Mnemon
Giving content for free is always good, but giving you something you didn’t ask for and forcing you to keep it either you like it or not is a different thing.
Some people like SingStar and welcomed the idea of keeping it and that if fine, but I did not ask for SingStar and I would like the option to remove it.
Is it just an icon? Indeed it is, but again, it’s for something I didn’t ask for and that I don’t want to keep, if I can delete every single game I have in the HDD, why the heck am I forced to keep it just because Sony wants us to?
Please add an option for those who don’t want it to delete it.
77
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 6:54 am by KylieDog
Why the hell is it sitting in the middle of my XMB above all my games folders?
I will never play it, but now it is in the way every time I turn on the PS3, how do I delete this awful thing? I can delete all other apps.
Very intrusive positioning, let us move it into a folder (like other games) or delete it entirely.

revamp xmb = very hard needed + very fast

Downloaded. I personally was always wanting a “discless” Singstar, but like many others I don’t agree with it being forced onto the XMB. Why no option to put it into folders with all my other downloaded games ???
80
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 7:56 am by TommyHindle
Like the last bunch of posts i really don’t like this being forced into the XMB.
Please give us the option to remove it or at least move it somewhere else, it’s obtrusive and frankly disrespectful.
Great for people who love singstar but rather rude to force a game upon people who have already tried it and have no interest in it, especially considering it is amongst content that people have paid for.
We didn’t get the God of War or Uncharted slammed into the XMB so why singstar?
81
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 8:08 am by ARMZ
I know Japanese people love karaoke but do you have to force it down everyone else’s throat? please remove the Singstar app immediately as it it is not wanted by myself and MILLIONS of others.
My PS3 is making strange sounds since this new update, what the hell?
Can you guys over at Sony do anything right?
I’ve bought every freakin accessory there is, except PlayTV(hard to find discounted), and I really enjoy playing games on this machine, the only time I’ve been really upset over anything here was the CS:GO debacle but now this? this is unacceptable, where is the honor for the consumer who keeps you in power? where the [DELETED] IS IT ????
You have no honor anymore Sony, I think you know what to do…..

May seem minor to some but this is annoying. If i could simply put the icon into a folder or something but the icon has no options upon pressing triangle. I changed from xbox partially due to them forcing things you didnt want onto the os and here are sony starting to follow suit!

I’m adding to the list of people who hate this.
You have the choice to download it true, but not the choice to hide it.
Please can you advise when the next firmware update is coming with the option to delete the icon,
It’s essentially sony’s way of forcing advertising on us and I don’t like it.

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 8:52 am by MikLSP
@ Project2insanity, @dogwalker4000 etc.
I’m not sure why you are reacting so adversely to my displeasure on this matter, it isn’t childish to complain and now that other people have realised the truth I appear to have been joined by a majority.
Please do make it clear to them that they are all making a mountain out of a molehill too…..or maybe now realise that people DO NOT want this obtrusive icon in their way every time they use their PS3 and everyone has a right to say so!

Ok nice update but if i want to try singstar i will download it now its in my xmb and i will probily never use it..if i use it once i would like to delete it.Same with playstation home i used it twice or so and i didnt like it dont force people to put things in there xmb that they dont want!
It would be nice that there will be a update that you can hide some options in your xmb.

i think its absolutely ridiculous that we can’t remove this app. coming from someone who buys a lot of digital games i find it extremely annoying that i have to dodge the massive singstar app and why were trophies moved to the network tab? to make room for singstar? wow so not only have you changed something that didn’t need changing at all but you’ve added a completely useless app for me which i cannot remove. i can appreciate that its very useful for people who play singstar but for people like me who don’t it offensively sticks out like a sore thumb. if i asked you to make a guitar hero app i bet that wouldn’t happen and i bet it wouldn’t be forced onto us all. i have one sentence to sum this all up. the ps3 is turning into an xbox. thank you for your time however i doubt anyone will reply as criticism seems to fall on deaf ears on this forum.

Great, more stuff to clutter up the XMB with.

Ok Nina, just an idea for multiple singstars disk owners.
Why didn’t you put a settings to check disk we already own, to make songs appears in the carroussel ?
For example, i have singstar first one, singstar hits, singstar move, singstar abba, and singstar mecano. If you put an option, i’ll check only the disk i own, and i will be able to see it in the carrousel. Then, when i choose one title from any of my disk, a small popup will appears to put the “named disk” into the ps3.
At least i’ll not need to have an eye on the game box, and also on my tv to saw all titles available to sing. And also i’ll be sure i’m not buying a song i’ve already have on a cd (it’s happen one time, bit dissapointed about this…)
90
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:24 am by kingofscotland
@89 What he said – this would be much better, seeing all the disc based songs we own and a prompt to insert disc if we choose it. Make it happen, surely easy enough???

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:24 am by adz2k7
I gotta agree with others on here. Forcing the icon on everyone is really irritating. If we’ll never choose to play the game, we shouldn’t be forced to have the icon on our XMB’s. My guess is you knew people would be annoyed about this, and that’s why it was left out of the blog post about the firmware, that way when people download the update, it’s too late to do anything. These decisions will come back to haunt you in the end.

Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:38 am by DeividHasselhoff
Please give the chance to hide the icon. If i had any interest whatsoever in playing any Singstar game i would’ve bought them a long time ago. If im hanging out with friends, we have much better things to do than play Singstar and games like this are extremely pointless when playing solo.
At least make it drop down on games menu below games you actually play like other games do. I’m not going to pay you a single € no matter how long you keep the logo there and therefore it is completely pointless and annoying.
94
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:40 am by Viet-Bong-Army
Why has this application link been backed into the Firmware? There’s no reason to ram ‘Singstar’ down people’s throats. Making it un-deletable is ridiculous. Fix this please.
95
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:44 am by ProjectJAY
Please. PLEASE. Move the SingStar logo to the Music column! Or better yet, let us delete it! The logo itself is already massive and ugly, I don’t want to have to look at something I am never EVER going to use in a column I use all the time! I am BEGGING you!
96
Posted on 24 October, 2012 at 9:51 am by dogwalker4000
I’m not sure I understand peoples thinking on tbh, you’re all complaining about this icon and yes I can see that it would be a slight annoyance because it can’t be removed but it really is not the be all and end all. Yes its advertising (and from some comments it seems to have worked) but are things any different on the Xbox? I just think there are people on here who consistently have some to moan about, which is fair enough but the majority of people that do have a complaint do it in a very rude and aggressive manner, much like a young child who wouldn’t know any better. It’s no wonder some of you are ignored imo.
One thing I will say…It’s totally ridiculous that the Trophy icon is now clogging up my online section, remove it now before I get my toys and sling them into space. Thanks.

This needs to come off my XMB, it’s abhorrent that you would make us have to look at it FULL SCREEN every time we scroll over to the game tab.
Allow us to delete it. If this is the future of the PS3/4 and the PSN I will trade my station in for an XBOX.
