I promised you exciting news, so here it is! SingStar, the ultimate competitive singing game for PlayStation 3, will now be available to everyone in SCE Europe territories (as well as Australia and New Zealand) as a free download straight from the XMB.
Yes, that’s right, no more need to slot in a disc to get that party started. Simply install SingStar from the XMB and you will be able to start singing in no time, share your performances with the community and visit the SingStore to get hold of more great tracks for your collection.
I’ve listed all the great things about SingStar on the XMB for you below but I am most excited about the fact that you can now play SingStar with your PlayStation Eye camera. We have spent many an afternoon testing this in the office and are pretty pleased with it so please let us know what you think! This will only work for single player mode, so if you’re gearing up for a serious SingStar battle, you’ll obviously still need to plug in some mics.
If you’re brand new to SingStar and have never bought a song from the SingStore before, there are also some short demo songs available for you to download and try out.
SingStar on the XMB:
- The SingStar game client is FREE, no disc required!
- Sing with PS Eye
- Compatible with SingStar microphones, official PlayStation Wireless headsets and common USB microphones
- Short demo songs available for download for new SingStore customers
- Easy access PS2 and PS3 disc swap from song carousel
- Use PSP or PS Vita to create playlists with SingStar Remote
- Instantly share your performances with the SingStar community and your friends on Facebook
- Acquire new trophies
SingStar will be added to the XMB very soon. Follow us on Twitter @SingStarHQ and keep your eyes peeled on www.singstar.com for more news and a confirmed release date.

@Viet-Bong-Army,
Yes it is, I’ve not turned my playstation on since the Singstar update, bought a 360 the day after. I’ll not be buying my Christmas games for the PS3.
I’ll go back to it to play old games on it, but Sony won’t be getting any more money out of me after this farce.

I have been PS-player since Final Fantasy VIII, and though I won’t change to xbox (I’d rather buy Wii, since I have NES, SNES and DS), I hope that loyal customers would be heard. No ragequits, but try to improve your image by showing that community matters. Being online gives SCEE responsibility to listen their customers.
tl,dr: Make singstar optinional. Me and thousands of others want it gone.

You made my day.
I am trying to ignore the icon but I fail every night. Before I remove a disc I even move to another category so singstar will not get the focus. That is my life now. It’s sad.
Some people tend to say “It’s just an icon”. But it’s not. It’s a statement. I mean, I know that I am a cash cow but now they say it to my face. That’s what worries me the most.

PLEASE CAN YOU GIVE US THE OPTION AT LEAST TO NOT BOOT STRAIGHT ONTO THE ICON.
PLEASE.
Consider this, there is an option in system system to allow you to disable booting onto ‘Whats New’ the option is there to allow people to choose to boot your system without seeing advertisements, this icon placement breaks that.

@ Viet-Bong-Army
I’ve personally been a multi-format gamer since the days of old when my parents bought me a Spectrum 48k and a Commodore 64….yes, I’m that old. Ever since then I always owned at least two of the major competitors, whether Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft, although these past two generations it’s been all three.
That being said, Sony have always been my priority console leaving the other two formats for their respective exclusives. Yes I know given the circumstances the 360 would’ve made a better choice given the higher quality of 90% of all cross and multi-platform titles. But I was loyal. I loved Sony, and regardless of its technical failings nothing could have changed that. That is, except for SCEE themselves. I won’t tell you to buy a 360 or even abandon the WiiU, but I will say “you won’t regret it”.
Sony are clearly trying to “out wait” unhappy consumers regarding Singstar. The old saying “The Customer is Always Right” doesn’t exist withing Sony’s vocabulary. On this principle alone gamer’s shouldn’t give in if only to stop them doing it again.

When will we be able to remove this “Singstar” app from the XMB? Forcing such things onto people will not work. You have no idea how insulting it is to see Sony forcing rubbish games onto consumers.

when will we be able to delete the singstar icon ? please release a fix
1312
Posted on 7 November, 2012 at 12:09 pm by Equirah
@SONY (not OP)
So you force the app on our face, give us no way to remove it nor to use it without purchasing extar items and if one accidentaly tries it out it makes a new trophy list adding a nice 0% to your collection and even if you go and buy the things you need to “play” it it’s not a full version so you have to buy extra songs to plat it.
If this is your way of trying to milk money from people at least be a bit more discrete. For now just get us a way to remove it and while you’re ate it a way to remove unwanted trophy lists.

My only problem is that my system boots the Singstar advertisement now, keep the icon there but but I don’t want my PS3 booting to it and taking precedent over the paid for dynamic themes.

So it’s been weeks and that stupid thing is still there. Sony, please allow us to delete it. Everyone who was going to try it probably already has by now so let those of us who don’t want anything to do with Singstar delete it already.

One thing i want to add, a lot of people here have been called moaners by some, that is allways going to happen on most every blog, the difference with this one though is that even IF we/you Are ‘moaners’, i will bet we are Honest ones.. i mean, how many people here would care about a icon/theme, if they were getting most All their games for Free ?.. exactly.. no-one would.. all i will add is that at least one person who ‘cruasades’ against these opinions here.. gets his games Free.. or boasts he does, but i am swayed towards believing, just something to keep in mind, imo, most all of the sce-df are prob using some method or other. getting what they want outa sony with no-charge, and ‘prob’ either come across all saintly to just laugh at rest of us … suckers.. or may believe doing so will somehow prevent suspicion fallin on them.. ppl would be surprised that it isn’t usually the ‘childish’ comments that do this cfw stuff, but mostly the more silky type (wormlike) ones..anyway, hope ppl here soon get acknowledged.

i own 2 ps3′s, vita, xbox, wii, pc, ds etc… i pay a yearly subscription to sony, one to microsoft, another to blizzard so i like to think ive invested quite alot of time, effort and money into my hobby.
at some point in the past i made a conscious/subconscious decision to invest more time in sony and trophies than gamer points, yeah yeah its all about the games not trophies blah blah
anyway, i feel i have a right to complain about something i dislike.. i understand its ‘only’ an icon and under other circumstances i could ignore it, but i hate it… i certainly dont care enough about some people on here to send them a friend invite just to call them a moner?? (moner… haha), it does make me wonder what departmant at sony they are associated with?
looking over at my game collection i have roughly 45/50 boxed ps3 games, the majority of which i pre ordered, maybe another 10 i downloaded from the store, i also have maybe 10/15 xbox games, i like my trophy collection, i dont want to start again on gamer points
yes i am going to moan (maybe ill even be a moner :p).
get used to it, you might like it!!

Personally if you don’t say something nothing will be done, and yes as you say it’s only a icon but what is next soon 5 or 6 of these icons that you can’t get rid of, the position of this is the problem and the fact it goes full screen with two [CENSORED], plus I think the store is not so good now can’t find jack
I have been a gamer for a long time my first machine was a commodore vic 20 (used) stayed with commodore then Nintendo and been a playstation fan since had a Xbox but that got the ring of death

Nina Scherer,
You do realise that until you stop being stubborn and concede that this icon placement was a bad idea that any future Singstar blog entry is just going to be filled with complaints and negativity, you can dig your heels in but we’re giving up this Nina.

Seeing this many people get up in arms over intrusive ad-placement really restores my faith in humanity after reading people actually defending Microsoft’s decision to make the new dashboard homepage 20% content you want and 80% forced ads.
Please don’t go down this path Playstation dudes, it’s one of the few leg-ups you have on the competition.

Just want to add my voice to those who hate having the Singstar icon forced to the top of the games list.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time customising my xmb so it reflects myself and my tastes, which are things like Dark Souls, Dragons Dogma, Magic the Gathering… and now slap bang in the middle of that is Singstar, standing out like a sore thumb.
I know theres other un-removable icons on the xmb, and I couldn’t care less about them – but I honestly find the SIngstar one offensive and embarrassing.
Having a Lovefilm icon implies you like watching films – having a SIngstar icon implies you performing enjoy cheesy pop karaoke in your living room and dressing like an X-Factor/TOWIE reject, the idea of which I personally find horrendous. Also its far too prominent in its placement.
I can see absolutely no justification or logic in making the icon so it cannot be deleted or moved. How could Sony seriously think that EVERY PS3 user would want a Singstar icon in their games list?? Please make an update that addresses this.

I smell some epic meme potential here.
“Dear Sony,
When you were sleeping, I snuck in your office and made all your computers play random Justin Bieber songs at startup. Its permanent by the way, but you might like it!”
“Dear Sony,
This latest update will paint your house pink and fill all your bagels with cathair. Go on, have a bite. You might like it!”
If they won’t talk to us, maybe we should talk to everyone else?

Please, will it be possible in a future update to remove this? I don’t like singstar at all, I don’t even own anything required to play it.
I really hate that this is forced on all PS3 users. This may be even dumber than not releasing the PSVita with Project Diva f in the West.
A displeased Sony user through many, many years.

I’m in the same boat as you. Spent a small fortune on PS3 games and accessories in the past. I’ll not be spending a single penny on them in the future. SCEE staff have entirely ignored all the complaints in the hope it’ll blow over. The typical response. It isn’t good enough and they don’t deserve our cash.

i have now cancelled the plus auto resubscription thing, so when it runs out in december it wont get renewed, not if i have to put up with those 2 happy people pretending to have fun at singstar, grinning out at me like they dont have a brain cell between them…
if its meant to be a game, let me put it in the ps3GAMES folder, if its not a game then put it under music or something…
also, dont reply to emails with a general copy/paste, telling me to phone a premium rate number and that the game is free to play… send me the microphones if its free!! nothing about it is free (apart from an icon)
i also cancelled need for speed and AC3 pre orders and redid them on xbox
ive had enough, im trying xbox, i might like it

just a tip for those who dont want to be confronted with singstar on their XMB everyday and tired to wait for a solution that may not even be offered.
you can create a new psn account in a country without ps-store support , or US (but id rather go with no ps-store because US may get it eventually too), on such account you wont see the singstar icon and wallpaper
i already did that, sadly its the only solution i know of atm

@Scruffy
– yeah same mate; just never got round to replacing the broken 360. Probably a good time to do it, at least you can block their ad servers through your router, it’s not welded into the firmware.
I cancelled all my PS3 pre-orders last week, so… meh. Amazon are chucking 360s out for less than a 140 quid too! Result!
I’ll wait it out using the competition’s machine instead. I’ll probably be back, but not before this is fixed.

As a long time supporter of your product, and long time employee of EBGames, I highly encouraged most of my customers towards the Playstation brand.
However, as a direct result of the rudeness and lack of professionalism displayed by Nina Scherer, I will no longer be doing so. I will be steering my customers well and truly away from your consoles and products.
This will not be at all a difficult task, considering the lack of exclusive titles, outrageous pricing structure and now blatant lack of respect toward your existing user base.
I have also, as a direct result of the utter ignorance shown by Nina Scherer, decided to resume my hacking and modification of Playstation consoles, with the express intention of removing unwanted items from the XMB.
The 500+ PSP’s I have personally modified, and thousands of people I personally assisted in this process certainly made a dent in your industry. Perhaps we can do the same for the PS3?
Please note, this has nothing to do with the fact an icon has appeared in the XMB.
I will make this clear. This is a direct action taken, due solely to the childish and blatant disregard shown by Nina Scherer towards loyal Sony customers.
Thank you for your time.

Dear Sony,
Can you please tell me how to remove the annoying singstar icon from my PS3 system.
I have no interest in it, I did not request it, I do not want it, I do not have the microphones to play it, but YOU have decided I must have it on my system.
It is annoying, intrusive, and I suspect potentially illegal as YOU have installed something on my system without my consent or the option to decline it’s addition.
I WANT THE DAMN THING GONE!

Actually breaking the law.
Stand up and be heard people.
“ Privacy-invasive software is a category of software that ignores users’ right to be left alone and that is distributed with a specific intent, often of a commercial nature, which negatively affect[s] its users.[citation needed] ”
In this context, ignoring users’ right to be left alone means that the software is unsolicited and that it does not permit users to determine for themselves when, how and to what extent personally identifiable data is gathered, stored or processed by the software. Distributed means that it has entered the computer systems of users from (often unknown) servers placed on the Internet infrastructure. Often of a commercial nature means that the software (regardless of type or quality) is used as a tool in some sort of a commercial plan to gain revenues.
