I’m going to go out on a limb and hazard a guess that many of you will be playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 this weekend. Please enjoy – I hear it’s a really strong entry in the series.
It’s amazing to witness a COD launch these days – it’s become a truly massive event in the entertainment calendar, and one that garners attention far outside the standard gaming media. No doubt we’ll hear extraordinary stats from Activision in the next week or so, revealing the staggering amount of players who’ve picked up the game this year.
Indeed, the first person shooter as a genre has becoming a dominant feature in the gaming landscape, in the same way that, say, platformers were in the ’80s and early ’90s. That said, there are plenty of gamers out there who just don’t get the appeal of the FPS. I wouldn’t quite put myself in that camp, but I certainly struggle to get into the majority of them.
So, your debate topic this week:
Do you love shooters? If so, why? Similarly, if you hate them, explain yourself!
I’ve got an apt prize on offer this week. The 10 most thoughtful posts get a download code for Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified on PS Vita. For more on the handheld entry in the franchise, see our recent interview with developer Nihilistic Software and check out the trailer below.
If your response is picked by our judges and you’re not a fan of the genre, I can offer a When Vikings Attack! code instead. Either way, good luck!

I love the genre, but lately im not such a huge fan as i was before.
for example, once I used to pre-order most shooter a year before the original release date, now I can play the last year shooter without any regrets.
As for Japanese RPG its the other way around, just Persona 4 on Feb is getting me hyped.
I wont say that I bought the Vita for shooter games only.
Uncharted Golden Abyss was a great game to play, so Im hoping the COD is good just as it.
Thank you so much for making this contest, much appreciation!

I love First person shooters, they’re generally the easiest game to get involved with for me… because not a single one is any bleeding different, and for that reason, I also kind of hate them.
I can jump in to any COD game, and know I can be pretty good at it. Because despite a new lick of a paint and the odd new weapon. The game is still the same. Still no vehicles, still a terrible cover system, and still easy as hell to rabbit jump and shoot at the same time.
Battlefield, I can be equally as good at because it’s the same with vehicles. When I finally get a good shooter, with a good cover system, I’ve spent so long playing average games without them, that I’m capable enough that the Cover System is barely of use. For all the changes COD supposedly makes every year to warrant high scores, the same tactics and same skills work in every game since they first started Modern Warfare, and I hate that, because it made lots of other FPS developers lazy too.

I remember my first fps. 3d Monster maze on the zx81. Although it was more of a fp than fps, it was the first time I’d ever played a game through the eyes of the character, and the first time I’d ever actually felt like I was ‘in’ the game – and I used to get scared by the large, low resolution, blocky T-rex that chased you in the maze!
(fingers crossed!)
Made me a fan of the genre ever since.
Things have obviously moved on since then (thank goodness) but it’s still the best way to actually get into the feel of the story, and to feel like you’re taking part in the situations thrown at you.
I do suck at the multiplayer, and I often feel like I’m probably walking around the game world with a large bullseye and a t-shirt that says ‘shoot me’.
Even if I play a racing game, I tend to use the first person camera for the imersive feel. After all I’ve never actually driven a car whilst sitting on its roof!
Haven’t actually had a chance to play a twin stick fps on my vita yet, but i’m looking forward to it…..I’m not allowed to buy any games this side of xmas.
I think there’s loophole for competition prizes

it all depends on what type of FPS you play. For some it is COD and for others its BF3 to me these games are great in there own way which makes the fps market so entertaining!
I love FPS!

I was first introduced into a FPS especially the multiplayer side of it through the famous N64 Goldeneye. The days when you all huddled around one TV punching whoever was winning etc. Its because of this thrill of winning and beating a friend or forming a team to overcome whatever situation your in that makes the genre so appealing. People love running around shooting guns and feeling like there getting rid of people who stand in there way. I also think with big influences on films and real life wars its that people like to envision being a part of that. especially with that feeling like your in the shoes of a hero. only a FPS could make someone feel that way.

I hate them, though not completely. FPS games seem to be the most generic games I’ve ever played and they havent changed since Wolfenstein 3D came out.. except of course the graphics.
Whats the difference between Halo, COD, MOH and whatever other FPS game is apparently “good” these days? Nothing at all. Mirror’s Edge took a different route and wasnt the typical run and gun.. infact guns were basically the last thing on your mind… and Left 4 Dead was pretty awesome.
The option to scroll into first person is good for a lot of games but I wouldn’t like a game stuck in that position.

I hate them. Can’t stand Call of Duty games. Sorry guys. I have tried the demo and it was so boring and I kept on dying. I only like Borderlands which has rpg elements in it but I’m sure it’s classed as a first person shooter. My friend loves Call of Duty though. It’s the only game she plays, most of the time.

Right let’s do this! I adore first person shooters back in the golden years of my youth! The variety of story lines and the new groundbreaking game mechanics were all the raise in the 90′s & early noughties for example the absolutely brilliant time splitters series which saw us in areas such a the wild west to a ghost house. I’m ashamed I’ve spent most of my childhood on games such as these. Furthermore the countless and amazing house four players spent crowding round a small 15″ screen created an intense atmosphere like no other. Today’s games are absolutely stunning and brilliant, games such as killzone 2 & 3 created a world that even in my wildest imagination couldnt think of and the story to back but with the new era of Cod franchise games are jumping on the band wagon and churning out games that are all the same…I’m not saying cod is bad as I am thoroughly enjoying black ops it’s just that why do all other companies follow the same mechanics create no originality?
So in short fps games will stay with me for the rest of my life and will never tire ng the world from some terrorist cell or alien army!
Over and out Jordan

Final winner for this week right here.
Congrats to those who came away with a code, and kudos to everyone else for getting involved. Was surprised how one-sided this argument ended up!
FYI: Winners will receive their codes as a PM to their PSN ID on the official forum: http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/?category.id=55
They should be with you either later today or early tomorrow.

I don’t love or hate them, I like a lot of first person shooters (fps), but there are few of a certain genre I’m starting to dislike (hate is such a strong word).
I’m talking of military fps, I’m pretty tired of them. I didn’t get any of “this year’s shooters” nor do I plan to.
Being completely honest I would get something like Halo if that option was on the table (I don’t have a 360 nor do I want one). An adventure in space is a welcome change of pace of all that military stuff, something not grounded on reality, but it doesn’t have to be space, Bioshock is an excellent first person shooter, it has a great story and rpg elements but it’s still an fps, so naturally in the coming months I’m looking forward to Bioshock Infinite…
Sooner than that Far Cry 3 is looking pretty great, once again because it’s so different from all this mainstream modern war fps.
Oh, but I got Borderlands 2! And it’s a LOT of fun!
That’s where I stand I like fps, just don’t ask me to play “call of battlefield modern honor” I’m tired of it!
So… Don’t count my comment for this week’s prize… For all the reasons above

I love first person shooters for one main reason, moments,
Anyone that played call of Duty 4 when it came out will know what I am talking about when I say, do you remember the Plane moment (no spoilers here sorry)or the first time you encounter a tank on battlefield and think how do I get Rid of that.
Additionally the feeling you get when you pull everything off just right, I am a big fan of the Operation Flashpoint series, and anyone that says all FPS are all the same must of never played these as they are as hard as nails and you can get as involved as you want (completing levels without firing a weapon can also be achieved) I even have an op flashpoint Platinum.

Personally, i love them as i love competition and i don’t think there’s any genre that is as competitive as shooters are. I also prefer FPS to TPS just because of the feel and (imo) increased realism.

I like TPS a lil more, cause alot of the fps look and feel the same. You can look at a fps and it’ll really like like some other game cause the 1st persoon view is pretty much the same.

personally I love them, you can just stick one in the console, pick up the controller and just play. no having to remember button combinations or quest/story info. I think for that very reason there is something pretty zen and relaxing about shooters, in an ironic or odd kind of way.

I love shooters when they’re done well.
Like Killzone 3, for instance.
Once developers realise that they shouldn’t just churn them out and work
Very carefully to come up with a good storyline as well as ensuring
Every online game is well balanced.
Some shooters seem to be pretty much knocked up in a few weeks, where as others
Have obviously had more care taken over the game, be it the single player
Or the multiplayer aspect.
Of all the shooters on the PS3, Killzone 3 does stand out
Though obviously COD does have its place, even though
Every time I try to play that online I get annihilated.
Really should practice more, I guess.
Seems I don’t get enough time these days.

Hate is a heavy word to use, but for sure I believe FPS is no less than a continous backstep for game industry. Of course and there are some minor exceptions, but as people say exceptions make the rules.
If you play 1 or 50 FPS games the gameplay will be always the same with no room for new ideas. Using almost the same, already made, core game engine, the creation of a new FPS looks cheap to me, and since it costs less for a software house it has less risk to be a disaster especially to a market that it is already taught to “love” FPS.
Not everyone can create Uncharted, or Journey, or Dark Souls, or Ico, or even GTA. At least not with some thousands of bugs. And not everyone has the ability to create art as some games are. But almost everyone with the tools that currently exist can create an FPS, and if it is under a heavy franchise it will be a mass success. It is understandable since this is the concept of companies. But what will happened if gamers finally got bored? Or sheep never get bored of grass?

Since the Call of Duty craze, most other FPS now lack any originality. COD created it’s own style of shooter, but now any other FPS that get’s released seems to try and mimic the game, ruining the genre. The best shooters these days are the one’s that try something new. COD can stick to what it does as it’s fans enjoy it, but I currently crave a new Timesplitters game, as it was fun, enjoyable, crazy, silly, original, etc. But if a fourth game was released, it probably wouldn’t do well due to the shape of the gaming landscape in terms of FPSs. But it happens every generation – Whether it was Doom, GoldenEye, Halo or COD. Unfortunately I’m still stuck in the GoldenEye era, so i’m still waiting for the next generation for me too start re-liking the genre. For now, I’m sticking in the Third Person camp thank you.

Dagnammit forgot about the weekend debate this week, but deffo want to throw my 2 cents in.
I have been a fan of the FPS genre since as long as I can remember. I would purchase every FPS game I could lay my hands on when I was younger. Why? I’m not entirely sure, was it that I wanted to make my way down a corridor shooting at anything that moves? Probably, but more than that, it was the genre that tended to be defining and growing faster than the others.
I come at this as primarily a PC GAMER, so Graphically they were always pushing the boundaries and I always wanted to see how far things had come with each new game, and just what the developer could achieve.
I guess the fundemental strong point of the FPS genre is that you step into the shoes of someone entirely, and it is when I think woah… hold on… instead of cackling manically and moving onto my next victim, that I really appreciate the perspective the devolper has given me.
I do however, long for a simple old school FPS multiplayer experience where everyone is on an even playing field at the start fighting it out for the on map weapons/power ups each and everytime. Quake/UT I miss you.
