13 reasons to be excited about 2013

Good morning all. Any sore heads out there? I do hope everyone enjoyed their celebrations. Of course, today sees the dawning of a brand new year, and one that is ripe with tantalising prospects for gamers.

So, before we properly kick off another year of PlayStation Blogging next week, it seemed like a good opportunity to look ahead and pick out a few of the most exciting releases on the horizon for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

You’ll be hearing much, much more on all these titles in the coming months here on PlayStation Blog. In the meantime, feel free to start salivating…

The Last of Us
There are surely few more anticipated releases on any system than Uncharted developer Naughty Dog’s brand new IP. Set in a terrifying post-apocalyptic landscape, The Last of Us promises a visceral, dramatic, sophisticated and hugely entertaining survival adventure.
Expected: 7th May (PS3)

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
The combination of beloved Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo) and RPG specialists Level-5 is one the most tantalising match-ups in recent years. Even if the gameplay falls short – which it won’t – this will be worth the price of entry for the majestic visuals alone.
Expected: 25th January (PS3)

Grand Theft Auto 5
This one needs no introduction. A new entry in the GTA series is a huge event in the gaming calendar and this will be no different. Expect the usual Rockstar formula – a huge open world, brilliant mission design, jet black humour and outrageous violence.
Expected: Spring 2013 (PS3)

Killzone: Mercenary
Guerrilla’s acclaimed FPS series makes its PS Vita debut later this year, and will do so in real style, packing a true blockbuster twin-stick experience onto your handheld. We’ll have more on how this is shaping up very soon.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)

Beyond: Two Souls
2009′s Heavy Rain signalled the arrival of Quantic Dream’s David Cage as one of the gaming industry’s true visionaries, and Beyond – the tense, action-packed tale of young Jodie Holmes and her mysterious supernatural companion Aiden – should cement that further.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS3)

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
It’s been a long wait for Sly fans since his last full adventure – 2005′s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves – but the racoon’s return this year will be well worth the wait. Developer Sanzaru Games has packed Thieves in Time with invention, charm, and heaps and heaps of content. Can’t wait.
Expected: 27th March (PS3 and PS Vita)

Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamic’s bold reinvention of the classic Tomb Raider series will surely be one of the big talking points of early 2013. Expect a surprisingly brutal origins tale, packed with some of the biggest set-pieces you’ll see all year.
Expected: 5th March (PS3)

Tearaway
For my money, Tearaway’s delightful reveal at Gamescom back in August was one of the highlights of 2012. Media Molecule’s first release since LittleBigPlanet 2 comes bearing the weight of expectation but, judging by that lovely first trailer, surely won’t disappoint. Again, we’ll have much more on this one very soon.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)

Crysis 3
Any Plus members out there who’ve been enjoying Crysis 2 of late should know that Crytek’s sci-fi IP is one of the smartest shooters out there. The German studio has promised that the third entry in the series will push the PlayStation 3 to its very limits. Considering what a feast for the eyes its predecessor was, that’s a very exciting prospect…
Expected: 22nd February (PS3)

Puppeteer
2013 is shaping up to be a great year for anyone who appreciates a healthy splash of colour in their video games, and Japan Studios’ gorgeous platformer, Puppeteer, is leading the charge. Take a look at our recent interview with creator Gavin Moore for more on this intriguing project.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS3)

God of War: Ascension
It’s a stoney heart that’s not excited to see the death-dealing demi-god back in action, and Santa Monica Studio’s forthcoming prequel promises to pack a mighty punch. Multiplayer is new to the series, but solo players won’t be disappointed by the massive main campaign either.
Expected: 15th March (PS3)

Soul Sacrifice
Legendary Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune returns to the PlayStation ecosystem this year with a deep, dark fantasy action title. Expect vicious combat, complex multiplayer systems and some of the most gruesome creature design this side of Dark Souls.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)

BioShock Infinite
Ken Levine’s first outing since the original BioShock back in 2008 looks absolutely stunning. Swapping the iconic underwater realm of Rapture for the stunning cloud city of Columbia, Infinite promises to be one of the most fascinating, ambitious video games of 2013.
Expected: 26th March (PS3)

And the rest…
That lot isn’t enough to make your wallet start sweating? It’s just the tip of the iceberg. Aliens: Colonial Marines, Fuse, Until Dawn, Dead Space 3, DmC Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Dust 514, Injustice: Gods Among Us… the list goes on. Looks like a hell of a year ahead, no?

Did you enjoy this?

reason 14: PS4 please XD

Some great games coming out there.

And the 14th one is the probability of a “Holiday Essentials Sale” (Vita) for EU Store too (just like the US one).

:fingerscrossed:

Hello Fred !

First of all Happy New Year and I am sure looking forward to this year! GTA V, The Last of Us, Tomb Raider and Beyond Two Souls are a must :D

I am still waiting for the walking dead the game discount..let’s hope it comes with the next update! ;) (please)

supersmith2500 1 January, 2013 @ 3:26 pm   7

Do you know what I really love to see this year? More support for the Vita and more great games for it (no half-***ed 3DS ports), 2012 was just the beginning for the Vita so let’s hope it’s gets great games for the Vita just like what PSP did few years back. US already has like 5 games we haven’t got yet last year like Persona 4 Golden and Retro City Rampage so we’ll get them soon enough. Especially a new colour for it and again, the US has a Crystal White Vita and we just got Black.

Hope this year’s a good one.

supersmith2500 1 January, 2013 @ 3:27 pm   8

And Fred, little question, Store update as usual tommorow and January sale soon? If there’s a sale, please include Vita content, thanks.

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 8:21 pm

The first store update of 2013 is on 9th January. And it won’t be too long before a new sale kicks off either!

shampoofan 1 January, 2013 @ 3:28 pm   9

is the festive sale going to be updated for the last week with anything for handhelds or was it just a ps3 sale, just like the 12 deals of Christmas were?

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 8:22 pm

All Festive Sale deals have now been announced. You wont have to wait too long into 2013 for some Vita discounts, I’m sure.

Dr-abdulelah 1 January, 2013 @ 3:28 pm   10

i excited about 2013 due to this games
The Last of Us , Killzone: Mercenary , tearaway
i hope Killzone: Mercenary will have 8v8 multiplayers or at least 6v6

What about Warrior’s Lair? :D

2013 is going to be insane. The Last of Us is the nr. 1 for me. Out of games that aren’t mentioned, Watch Dogs looks incredible as well, based only on the E3 trailer.

#11: It hasn’t been officially cancelled, but I don’t think we’ll ever see it I’m afraid. I was really looking forward to that one. Hope I’m wrong.

declan__watson 1 January, 2013 @ 3:42 pm   13

Hey Fred
I am very excited for 2013, all these new games look epic and breathtaking I will most cincerly look forward to trying out them if we any betas relesed. Could it be possible if we could get the last of us beta for plus members to try? And also guys for some of you who want the ps4 for this year dont need to worry. After all we are the best in gaming like what jack tretton said at E3 weve never been first, weve never been fastest but we are always the best. ;) Even if the pa4 gets relesed next uear early point expect some wiked games in offering, gran turismo 6, killzone 4, uncharted 4, maybe a little big planet 3, Playstation all stars battle royale 2 etc. Half of these games have been leaked on internet as possible launch date tittles remember guys, playstation is the best and we are the strongest.
LongLivePlay Never Stop Playing :)

A_Nonny_Moose 1 January, 2013 @ 4:00 pm   14

Just a quick question. When the post for the Plus December content went up, it said there would be a second DmC demo exclusive to Plus. I’ve checked the post since and it’s been edited out. What happened with that?

On topic, Tomb Raider and Sly Raccoon 4 (I don’t care if they’ve changed the name to Sly Cooper to fall in line with the US releases, it’ll always be Sly Raccoon to me) are my most wanted of this year.

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 8:22 pm

Chris will know more about that. I’ll chase him up when I’m back in the office later this week.

THE_FORCE 1 January, 2013 @ 4:04 pm   15

No sore head here – this is the first birthday I’ve spent sober in a looooong time. :/

There won’t be enough hours in the day to fit in all the games this year unfortunately. Well, maybe if I became a retired recluse, but even then it’d be pushing it.

Still, roll on Ni No Kuni I say! :)

fps_d0minat0r 1 January, 2013 @ 4:05 pm   16

I cant see anything special about crysis 3. will most likely just be a lot of marketing about maxing out the ps3 and end up running at 20 frames/sec with worse graphics than xbox version, just like they did with the second.

I wonder why the last guardian didnt make the list. Is the game so bad that its not a reason to be excited, or is it that theres no hope of it being released?

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 8:24 pm

Well, I’m pumped for Crysis 3, even if nobody else is! Loved the second one!

When will we hear something more about Rain?

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 8:25 pm

Not too long hopefully! We don’t have a confirmed release date for that yet, but if it falls in 2013 it definitely deserves a place on this list!

RossyWilson 1 January, 2013 @ 4:32 pm   18

Cant Wait.

I was hoping for:
1) A new and competent store team
2) A search and filter option in all the content I have bought.
3) A imoproved store that is actualy fun to use.
4) A much fast download for content I buy/bought.
5) Getting stuff in the store in time.
6) Getting a store updat that is wright the first time.
7) Realistig pricing on the store.
8) More love for Vita.

But yes these games are awesome to.

The crazy thing also is that all these game are releasing in the first half of the year!(To make space for PS4 hopefully :P)

well Ni No Kuni but then also looking forward to Persona 4 Golden release in March and with the exception of Tearaway when it gets a release date…everything I’m interested in is being released in Japan at least in physical like EDF 2017. However of the releases that made it to the west that I’m still waiting for EU release

1. Ragnarok Odyssey
2. Sumioni

and instead of spending my money on western games, will be importing a lot this year – really tired of the “massive update” every time I purchase a western game. Maybe Western devs need to spend more time making sure the game works before releasing it. Every time there is an update on a day 1 release game means the devs couldn’t be bothered releasing a working game which ultimately means why should I be bothered to buy their broken games.

Also a bit in poor taste to somehow infer that Level 5′s gameplay will somehow be less than – the only update I’ve ever had on a Level 5 game is the update for new quests – they at least release working games without needing an update before playing the game

21# Another game to be exited about is Dokuro. Looks like a really nice 2D plattformer for psvita.

komori_kiri 1 January, 2013 @ 5:29 pm   23

You forgot some. I’ll add them for you:

#14. More un-removable ads for crappy Free2Play(but not really free) games between your friends on your friend lists!

#15. More delays between releases so you’ll be able to experience content after the rest of the world! And we’ll even charge you more!

#16. CS:GO! Oh, wait… nevermind.

No need to thank me, SCEE. You’ve already enough.

declan__watson 1 January, 2013 @ 5:30 pm   24

Hey Fred
I was thinking of a couple of new developing teams you guys here at SCEE could acquire:
1.CCP games: Developers of dust 514 whih I have to say is an epic FPS online game and also by acquairing ccp we would also get exclusive ownership of eve corporation which would be an outstanding deal.
2. Quantic Dream: Now I know they are a first party poducer for sony but they arnt owned but I know that sony would buy quantic heres why: great ps3 first party exclusives Heavy rain and beyond two souls heavy rain was epic but beyond just looks incredable so I know sony would love to buy up this party.
3. Insomniac games: They are imdependent and have been for a long time but because sonyhas exclusive rights with the ratchet and clank series and spyro the dragon series, it would be good to acquire insomniac a really fabulous game developer. Btw I say spyro because we bassically still own the rights to spyro the dragon, when vivendi sells activision we get the rights back for crash and spyro but technacally we still do owj them as they were invented by naughty dog and insomniac and they are only better on playstatin anyone else agree with me. :)

CoolRichy008UK 1 January, 2013 @ 5:44 pm   25

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY
—————————-

oh and retro city rampage will be ps plus game of the month because its free on the ps plus game of the month in the USA

http://www.gamingtruth.com/2012/12/26/grab-this-steal-of-a-deal-on-retro-city-rampage/

quote from the page (and free to PlayStation Plus members. Having it free applies to both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores.) HOT INFO

if its free for ps plus USA it will be free as game as the month and sony dont you dare say this info is false because it isnt i just seen the website and looked it up so its 100% real and i can finally say this

RETRO CITY RAMPAGE WILL BE GAME OF THE MONTH from 2nd january we waited long enough so it will be FINALLY out tomorrow and dont say its not sony because we all dont want any more delays so for a 2013 bang get it out tomorrow not next week week after TOMORROW

have a good new year all (gets stungun ready if retro city rampage is not out tomorrow as game as the month for ps3 EU

@kivi95

yes I had forgotten about Dokuro

but games we won’t be getting in 2013 Tales of Innocence R, or Phantasy Star Online 2, Atelier Totori Plus or Atelier Meruru Plus. There’s loads more but mostly only in Japan.

it’s rather bad when you look with envy at what the ds has in comparison :(

Ryusennin 1 January, 2013 @ 5:54 pm   27

Despite superior resources, Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream will have a lot of work to do in order to top the emotional journey that is The Walking Dead.

mnmn1PLUS 1 January, 2013 @ 5:57 pm   29

Only one little detail: THE next store update is on the 9th NOT the 2nd

ImperatorA3 1 January, 2013 @ 6:07 pm   30

Can we still expect CS:GO or did I miss it’s cancellation?

Don’t afraid about Vita the list has already big games Killzone, tearaway, sly4, soul sacrifice and because the big ps3 games comes out before E3 Sony must focus there to vita with more games and better price and i m sure not going for ps4 this year. The only tnink everyone want is better store service, no more delays and bugs when buy a game. – – Not complain about crysis 3 is not anotner generic shooter… is a generic shooter witn big grass lol :) The last guarbian noone told comes out 2013

DoYouLikeMyID 1 January, 2013 @ 6:46 pm   32

Don’t forget Final Fantasy Versus XIII! ;)

And for me, Kingdom Hearts HD Remix 1.5

mman1235 1 January, 2013 @ 6:58 pm   33

my top 8 reasons for being excited about 2013:

1. Sly 4 (8 years and we finally get it :)

2. GOW ascension (the beta just got me sold on the newest game of the franchise yet again)

3. GTA V (ME WANT NOW)

4. Bioshock infinite (looks like GOTY material right here ;)

5. The Last Of Us (Naughty Dog havent disappointed me ever)

6. DMC (maybe depends on average score of reviews)

7. Dead Space 3 (loved the 2nd which was on PS+ but Im afraid co-op is gonna ruin the franchise for me like RE5′s co-op doomed the RE series)

8. More Great PS+ games, themes, betas and of course sales :)

its been a great year hope you guys continue doing a great job with new stuff for us PS+ members :)
Im loving every minute of it!

Chaosprower 1 January, 2013 @ 7:03 pm   34

All the dates for the exclusive Vita games are To Be Confirmed, or in other words, “not to be released any soon”.

Other than Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, which was supposed to come out this holiday but got delayed, and Persona 4 Golden, which was released last year everywhere else and we get a poor edition (no text translations nor any bonuses unlike the other territories) is there any confirmed PS Vita game coming out in…I don’t know…In the next 6 months?!

Leylifer 1 January, 2013 @ 7:03 pm   35

@mnmn1PLUS

So there will be 3 weeks between the last two store updates 21 DEC – 9 JAN

And We also got nothing (no discount, no game, nothing) for VITA in Xmas?

Thank you SCEE.

Really thank you.

Greatest department ever.

Chaosprower 1 January, 2013 @ 7:12 pm   36

And a little suggestion for future PS Vita first-party games coming out on both game cards and in the PS Store…Don’t disappoint day 1 PS Store costumers again! (I’m looking at the Little Big Planet Vita and All-Stars Battle Royale launches).

I hope you’re all enjoying the rest of your holidays while we post comments on an automatic blog post ;)

mman1235 1 January, 2013 @ 7:25 pm   37

hey fred when will tomorrow be the store update?
I cant wait for MK and Bioshock 2 :D

mnmn1PLUS 1 January, 2013 @ 7:29 pm   38

US got all these awesome updates and sale updates and for us it’s 3 weeks without any update :( let’s hope that the one on the 9th will be a truly amazing one with The Walking Dead and Battleield 3 Premium discount :D

chrisboers 1 January, 2013 @ 7:40 pm   39

@CoolRichy008UK

Thanks for the Happy New Year wish. Good wished back of course! However, can you please do us all a favour, and read up before you post your ranting comments? They really don’t make sense. SCEE and SCEA are different teams, and both have their own PS Plus collection.

While it is to be expected that RCR will come to PS Plus some day, it will not be tomorrow, as the PS Plus games for january have already been announced, and RCR is not part of that. (Bioshock 2 is GOTM, a game that the USA have had for quite some time already)

Gamesgbkiller 1 January, 2013 @ 7:45 pm   40

27th March .. SLY COOPER … Why we have to wait that long :(

mman1235 1 January, 2013 @ 8:06 pm   41

@gamesgbkiller

isn’t sly 4 supposed to come out in the 28 of February?

dominater444 1 January, 2013 @ 8:34 pm   42

@mman1235 no the US gets it the 5th february and we the 27th march thats 50 days later!!
@gamesgbkiller i know its long i want to try the cross save function, its really handy for me
@Fred why does we get Sly Cooper thieves in time 50 days later and why the 27th of march?around the 27th are big titles going to be launch so if sony wants money for sly 4 they better had choosen a other date!!

CassyChan 1 January, 2013 @ 8:34 pm   43

2013 will be an awesome year for gaming. Also, one not listed that I think is well worth a mention: Platinum Games’ Anarchy Reigns, out on the 11th.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mDn8AjzUaY

All my life I’ve wanted to play a sport called DEATH BALL, now I can, I can die happy :D

Mr. Sly Cooper is enough to make me think 2013 will be the best year this decade for me.

Anything happening with dust 514 this year?

wardrobe 1 January, 2013 @ 9:21 pm   46

2013 on ps3 looks good, lots of quality games….but i would like some info on the ps4 or whatever they/sony decide to call it…time is ticking…

ChiefTheRipper 1 January, 2013 @ 9:24 pm   47

Waiting so badly for these games, but I’m wondering why there haven’t been any store updates lately in Europe. I heard America’s PS-store got the update :/. New year’s sales would be awesome too!

    Fred Dutton 1 January, 2013 @ 11:02 pm

Christmas is a very, very quiet time for new releases as the whole industry is largely on holiday – nobody wants to release new titles when so many people are away and can’t support them. Duly, there are a couple of weeks with no updates. A few items were added to the US Store yesterday I believe (Jetpack Joyride, Chronovolt) – but both those games have already been released in the EU. Normal service will resume next week.

with regards to retro city rampage i asked the developer on twitter when we can expect it in the uk and he replayed 1 to 2 weeks AFTER the xbla launch hopefully one week.

due to this i will not be buying the game, the developer has said it is them that delayed the game not scee so the fact that we in the eu have been strung along while waiting on a release date for this game only for the dev to leave us to last(its also out on wiiware this week) is a massive kick in the face to us.
so i will personally not spend any money on this game and the only way i will be playing it is that if ends up a plus title.
developers need to learn that the eu market should not be an afterthought and the only way this will happen is if sales are effected, to everyone who decides to buy the game enjoy but i will not be joining you.

and like i said on the other blog post all i want to see in 2013 is news of a new infamous title so get on it sucker punch :)

Any explanation as to why AUS doesn’t get the Mortal Kombat game with Plus this time around?

The Gotham game is free for PC Steam users and coming from an Australian based location I can say I’ve found most console-FPS games to have a terrible server selection.

Where are the game servers for Gotham Impostors located and has the release have anything to do with Mortal Kombat’s game classification?

Skookie30 1 January, 2013 @ 9:42 pm   50
