Good morning all. Any sore heads out there? I do hope everyone enjoyed their celebrations. Of course, today sees the dawning of a brand new year, and one that is ripe with tantalising prospects for gamers.
So, before we properly kick off another year of PlayStation Blogging next week, it seemed like a good opportunity to look ahead and pick out a few of the most exciting releases on the horizon for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.
You’ll be hearing much, much more on all these titles in the coming months here on PlayStation Blog. In the meantime, feel free to start salivating…
The Last of Us
There are surely few more anticipated releases on any system than Uncharted developer Naughty Dog’s brand new IP. Set in a terrifying post-apocalyptic landscape, The Last of Us promises a visceral, dramatic, sophisticated and hugely entertaining survival adventure.
Expected: 7th May (PS3)
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
The combination of beloved Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo) and RPG specialists Level-5 is one the most tantalising match-ups in recent years. Even if the gameplay falls short – which it won’t – this will be worth the price of entry for the majestic visuals alone.
Expected: 25th January (PS3)
Grand Theft Auto 5
This one needs no introduction. A new entry in the GTA series is a huge event in the gaming calendar and this will be no different. Expect the usual Rockstar formula – a huge open world, brilliant mission design, jet black humour and outrageous violence.
Expected: Spring 2013 (PS3)
Killzone: Mercenary
Guerrilla’s acclaimed FPS series makes its PS Vita debut later this year, and will do so in real style, packing a true blockbuster twin-stick experience onto your handheld. We’ll have more on how this is shaping up very soon.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)
Beyond: Two Souls
2009′s Heavy Rain signalled the arrival of Quantic Dream’s David Cage as one of the gaming industry’s true visionaries, and Beyond – the tense, action-packed tale of young Jodie Holmes and her mysterious supernatural companion Aiden – should cement that further.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS3)
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
It’s been a long wait for Sly fans since his last full adventure – 2005′s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves – but the racoon’s return this year will be well worth the wait. Developer Sanzaru Games has packed Thieves in Time with invention, charm, and heaps and heaps of content. Can’t wait.
Expected: 27th March (PS3 and PS Vita)
Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamic’s bold reinvention of the classic Tomb Raider series will surely be one of the big talking points of early 2013. Expect a surprisingly brutal origins tale, packed with some of the biggest set-pieces you’ll see all year.
Expected: 5th March (PS3)
Tearaway
For my money, Tearaway’s delightful reveal at Gamescom back in August was one of the highlights of 2012. Media Molecule’s first release since LittleBigPlanet 2 comes bearing the weight of expectation but, judging by that lovely first trailer, surely won’t disappoint. Again, we’ll have much more on this one very soon.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)
Crysis 3
Any Plus members out there who’ve been enjoying Crysis 2 of late should know that Crytek’s sci-fi IP is one of the smartest shooters out there. The German studio has promised that the third entry in the series will push the PlayStation 3 to its very limits. Considering what a feast for the eyes its predecessor was, that’s a very exciting prospect…
Expected: 22nd February (PS3)
Puppeteer
2013 is shaping up to be a great year for anyone who appreciates a healthy splash of colour in their video games, and Japan Studios’ gorgeous platformer, Puppeteer, is leading the charge. Take a look at our recent interview with creator Gavin Moore for more on this intriguing project.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS3)
God of War: Ascension
It’s a stoney heart that’s not excited to see the death-dealing demi-god back in action, and Santa Monica Studio’s forthcoming prequel promises to pack a mighty punch. Multiplayer is new to the series, but solo players won’t be disappointed by the massive main campaign either.
Expected: 15th March (PS3)
Soul Sacrifice
Legendary Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune returns to the PlayStation ecosystem this year with a deep, dark fantasy action title. Expect vicious combat, complex multiplayer systems and some of the most gruesome creature design this side of Dark Souls.
Expected: TBC 2013 (PS Vita)
BioShock Infinite
Ken Levine’s first outing since the original BioShock back in 2008 looks absolutely stunning. Swapping the iconic underwater realm of Rapture for the stunning cloud city of Columbia, Infinite promises to be one of the most fascinating, ambitious video games of 2013.
Expected: 26th March (PS3)
And the rest…
That lot isn’t enough to make your wallet start sweating? It’s just the tip of the iceberg. Aliens: Colonial Marines, Fuse, Until Dawn, Dead Space 3, DmC Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Dust 514, Injustice: Gods Among Us… the list goes on. Looks like a hell of a year ahead, no?

@kugz-AU
Here’s the official statement from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment:
The highly anticipated video game Mortal Kombat, published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) in Australia, has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board and will not release in Australia. We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the world’s oldest and most successful video games franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers.
WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classification in Australia. As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time.

@fps_d0minat0r
Crytek didn’t work well on PS3; both Crysis 1 & 2 on PS3 are indeed significantly inferior to the 360 version which was/is not fair for us on PS3.
Also Crytek abandoned the multiplayer of Crysis 2 just 3 months after the release and never fixed the numerous bugs and issues that plagued the MP and the SP.
Really Crytek didn’t respect PS3 at all so no there is no reason to be excited for Crysis 3.

@Fred:
Hmm, no Store Update? This could be why SCEE team are still having their holidays then. Hope to see a better sale with Vita content.
Also, will the games BioShock 2, Guardians of Middle Earth and MK PS3 become free tommorow or are they shafted till next week?
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 11:39 am by Fred Dutton
Yes, the new Plus content is going up this afternoon. Enjoy!

I cant believe Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn is getting little to no hype from Sony, this is going to be the best MMORPG this year with PC>PS3 crossplay. Sony should be shouting from the rooftops about this game.

@hayzink
Thanks for the response, can’t say I saw that anywhere beforehand!
Hopefully now these sort of games will begin to be released now in Australia as I believe after yesterday the 18+ classification is now in place for Video Games!
A damn shame though, I grew up on Mortal Kombat on the Genesis!

@Kugz-AU
its a shame for you guys, i think its shocking that a government would ban something that pretty much every other country in the world thinks is acceptable for there people to play/watch.
i hate censorship adults have the right to make up there minds what is or is not acceptable to them

Other than Beyond and GTA, I’m really looking forward to Prey 2. The Last of Us I’ll keep an eye on, but I find ND to be the most overrated developer out there.
Crysis is all style over substance – and it didn’t even do that well on consoles. Anything EA will be avoided

Pretty good gaming opportunities in 2013.
However…Please think on past opportunities too. When I bought my PSPgo, ther was not a hungarian PS store, so I used a UK accoung for buying a lot of games. Now I’m on hungarian account and since there is no known possibility to migrate the games, I would like to see them available on the hungarian store too. Please check the situation with the decision makers. The games I would buy the 2nd time are: GoW: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, Pursuit Force series, Valkyria Chronicles II.
Thank You in advance.

Hello Fred.
Happy new year.
Will GB get a store update today, as I read in one of your previous posts that plus would be receiving bio shock 2 today.
Will we get a store update later on or will it be next week??? T__T
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 11:40 am by Fred Dutton
The Plus updates will be going live today as announced, but no new Store content until next Wednesday.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 9:48 am by Chocobo115
Can’t get excited over Tomb Raider anymore.
When the developers act like lapdogs to Microsoft, giving them exclusives.
I’ll still get it, just not at full price. around £20 should be good enough for me.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 10:05 am by CreditDue
I hope there’s an update today. The US has had theirs 2 weeks in a row. Clear to see where Sony’s priorities lie
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 11:42 am by Fred Dutton
Next Store update is on the 9th, though new Plus content will go live today as announced. The only content added to the US store over Christmas were titles already available in EU (Chronovolt, Jetpack Joyride). We’ll have a new sale up before too long as well.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 11:06 am by AlexAtkinUK
I’m really hoping for 64GB memory cards for PS Vita this year as with PSN+, storage space is a HUGE problem now.
Then again, I had to import from the US just to get a 32GB so I’m not holding much hope in it happening.
It wouldn’t be so bad if transferring content to/from the Vita wasn’t so painfully slow.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 11:34 am by SamiFFXII
Tomb Raider and GTA V, don’t care much for the others. The Last of Us looks interesting, but as with anything i’m staying sceptical due to the hype surrounding it.
Btw do you have any information regarding offline mode for MU on iOS? I mean the whole point is that i can listen to my music anywhere considering i’m paying for the service. Thanks.

We aren’t meant to be getting Gotham City Impostors in UK, so if you want it download it quickly before its taken off.
I just did, thanks for the extra game!

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 12:22 pm by taurus82
I’ll definitely be getting Beyond, Puppeteer, Metal Gear Rising and Anarchy Reigns.
The Ghibli charm of Ni No Kuni isn’t enough to make me part with my cash, not a fan of that style of RPG gameplay.

Why there is no Online Pass (Radnet) of Prototype 2 on EU store?
79
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 12:43 pm by ZACHSP8
A store update would of been nice start to 2013, rather than have to wait until 9th Jan, that will be 19 days since last store update. (excluding the poor 12 discount sale)
US store has been updated, and will have been on more than one occasion between our updates.
Jan very poor on PS+ as well, lets hope EU store and PS+ gets better from Feb onbwards.

The Last Guardian should be on that list. I would put that game as the most highly anticipated title. The reason I say that is because not only are team ico making this, other sony first party studios are helping with the development. But we dont no who though.
To my knowledge The Last Guardian must be the most secretive game in gaming history. And that alone makes it the number one anticipated title.
Come on team ico we the fans believe in you.

@Strangeheaven: You’re right. Only reason it’s not on this list, is that The Last Guardian will probably not make it in 2013.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 1:18 pm by Kotatsu2000
Bizarre omission of Ni no Kini and The Last Guardian. The former is out fairly soon and looks wonderful. The latter… well I guess we may never see that one.
And how about PS4? Shouldn’t that be reason no.1?
84
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 1:18 pm by shampoofan
since the psp is for all intents and purposes dead now, all psp games should be permanently cut in price by at least 50%. while the vita isn’t exactly being spoiled by dozens of new releases each week it would at least give vita owners a chance to pick up some older titles to play at a reasonable price
85
Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 1:22 pm by ZACHSP8
Why is it you can get the PS+ stuff up today before 12 GMT time but every other time we have to wait until around 1700 GMT?
I.m not complaining, just asking because around lunchtime is when all updates should go live and not at night time when most of the day has passed.
86

@Fred
So the store team has practically nothing to do this week and still managed to fail the Plus update? Even while they made the very same mistake with the free PSP Lego Batman game just recently?
You know, I often enough accepted that humans do make mistakes and I “embraced” the Christmas and New Year spirit. But you guys make it really hard for one to believe you that everyone is giving their best or that things will improve. It is simply too obvious that some people in the store team don’t care at all. It is beyond me how they manage to remain hired.

It surely would have raised my mood btw. if we got that Sound Shapes sale that I expected for Christmas. USA got it this week, so I strongly suggest that SCEE follows soon.
Read it from my lips: I want a Sound Shapes sale asap!

I have a question:
Are the No packaging Dualshock 3 controllers legit?
They come in a plastic bag abd they are cheaper.
Can anyone answer me and spread the truth?

Speaking of Sly Cooper, are we ever going to get a reason why we have to wait literally 2 months longer than what the states does? I thought we got over this crap years ago! Isent it enough we have to pay twice what the states does, get a 10th of the events and competitions, and get the short end of the stick when it comes to the PSN store and plus?
Is that not enough of a kick in the family jewels?
Seriously tempted to close my AU account and go set up a US PSN account and start importing all my games, that way I don’t have to put up with this anymore.
Why cant Playstation be like their competition, Microsoft and Nintendo, and treat regions equally? I don’t see Microsoft saying sorry EU you have to wait till January 2013 for Halo 4.
Nor do I see Nintendo saying sorry EU you have to wait till January 2013 for the WiiU.

Posted on 2 January, 2013 at 2:27 pm by supersmith2500
@muzzar89:
Well Sony is not alone with this one muzz but Nintendo is even worse. Kirby’s 20th Anniversary collection does not have a EU release, Scribblenauts Unlimited is delayed until late February, Mario’s 25th Anniversary was lame 2 years ago and the only thing to celebrate it is just a SNES ROM, soundtrack and artwork with less info and that’s it, Brawl also had a massive delay for 3 months also just like MGS HD 4 years ago and then there is this ridiculous restriction where you can’t buy Mature Content until between 11pm and 3am because NOE is based in Germany and has to follow the German Law. I’m glad SCEE is based in England.

Has anyone here noticed that there hasn’t been a Hands On Preview for The Last Of Us? Yet the game will release in 4 months.
It just seems weired considering that uncharted 2 had preview builds up to 8-10 months before the game was released.
Seems to me that naughtydog may not be satisfied or happy with the gameplay.

Is the first Wednesday of the month and no PS+ update.
Not a very good start to the year, I guess timely updates and store content is a good start to a “13 things to not be excited about in 2013″ list.

Two question for you fellow gamers.
1. Which MK did you guys get? The Komplete edition with all the DLC characters or the Original version?
2. How much space is Guardian of Middle Earth?
Btw, hope 2013 brings the best. =D
