UPDATE: Good morning all. From now on, in the interest of greater visibility, I’ll be announcing the winners of the Weekend Debate via an updated Blog post first thing every Tuesday.
This week’s lucky seven are: HighflyerVII, TheNudgeMan, MafiaClub, Sp4rkyM4rk1337, Mark917, Sneakygriff and OttoT. Congratulations, you’ve all snagged a Borderlands 2 goodie bag. We’ll get in touch via a PM to your account on the official forum to arrange delivery. Everyone else, better luck next time!
ORIGINAL POST: Greetings all. After a few weeks of slumber, Weekend Debate has emerged from its brief annual hibernation. And it’s hungry. Hungry for opinions. Your opinions, to be precise.
So, without further ado, let’s feed it.
Traditionally, January is the month where we all peer inwards, examine where we’re falling short as human beings and see what we’d like to change up over the coming 12 months. So, your topic for discussion this weekend:
What would you like to change about your gaming habits in 2013?
Play more? Play less? Check out more indies? See more games through to completion? Take more pride in your hobby? Try out a new genre? Let me know.
Me? Well, I’ll keep it simple. I played far, far too few titles in 2012. Moving across the world and starting a busy new job were partly to blame, but equally so was Dark Souls. Duly, I’ve locked my copy in a crate, tossed away the key and buried it in the back yard. Henceforth, I hereby pledge to widen my horizons and consume everything the industry throws my way this year.
Over to you!
As ever, I’ve got a nice prize for the commenters that most entertain – or enlighten – our judges: seven Borderlands 2 goodie bags to celebrate this week’s Creature Slaughterdome DLC release, including a copy of the game, T-shirts, keyrings and various other bits of swag. Good luck!

In 2012, due to the constant stream of great titles, I bought many games on a wiff, but found myself no time to finish them. Which was kind off a luxury problem. So many great games, not knowing which one to finish first, and never getting around to finishing ANY of them, especially since I started full time work and found myself in a position with less gaming time. (the fact I worked full time also contributed offcourse to the ability to buy more games)
So for 2013 I took the resulotion to open up more of my free time to gaming, while more carefully deciding which games to buy. I made a list with the titles I don’t want to miss out on (Ni No Kuni, Last of Ud, GTA V, Tearaway, Rain, Puppeteer, Persona 4 Golden to name a few) and went ahead and preorderd those. Other titles went on to a to-buy-later-on list. Games I’ll only purchase when I’ve got no other game on my hand and when the price went down.
It would be optimistic to say I’ll be able to finish every game I buy now, but I’m sure I can avoid the GAME TOWER OF DOOM I’ve build in 2012. Lots of games I played not half as much as they deserved.

i need to try and work through my plus back log, its like a virus that keeps expanding. No matter how quick i finish a game its gotten bigger by 2 or 3 games and now its even infected my vita. A good dose of weekend play helps a bit but it definately needs major weekday antibiotic play.

well i would love to see more vita titles announced very soon because vita has brought me back to handheld gaming, my favorite genres are action/adventure, platformers, racing, shooters, online multiplayer games, i would love to you guys announce a online only multiplayer game ala Warhawk.
I’m planning to attend E3 since i think thats where you guys are gonna announce the ps4 ,i just hope sony let the fans into their press conference, i was there in 2010 when Hermen Hulst showed Killzone 3 in 3d for the first time and i played Motorstorm Apocalypse in 3d for the first time too( man it was awesome) hopefully there will be ps4 demos at the show floor this E3.
i would love to see MediEvil, inFAMOUS, Heavenly Sword, God of War and Syphon Filter get announced on the vita. basically more vita games.
oh and im playing Sorcery and i must say what a fantastic psmove exclusive game, i wish there were more exclusive move games like it, i hope Until Dawn is as good or even better than Sorcery.

Upgrade my PS3′s HDD and start playing all those PS+ titles that are waiting for me in my downloads list!

I’d love to start actually finishing my games (or developing the willpower to not buy so many!).
I have a reasonable sized backlog of PS3 and Vita games and I own far more games on Steam than I care to admit, and have finished probably 20 of them at most.
I have to travel a reasonable amount with my job though, so hopefully I’ll be working through that Vita backlog just fine, the Steam backlog is a lost cause, however.

I need to start working on my back catalogue! I have so many games that I’ve bought or downloaded through Plus that I just haven’t touched yet.
I purchased Hitman when it first came out and it’s still in the cellophane!
Not only do I need to play them, though. I need to actually start hunting for more trophies! I have so many games on my list that I’ve completed but haven’t platinum’d. In fact, I only have on platinum since I bought my PS3 in May! This needs to change in the New Year!

To finish games iv started, got a lot of games over past few months, I tend to try them and put them on shelf planning to play them, but then never get round to it.its a really bad habit of mine and this year I’m going to try and concentrate on one at a time

I’d like to finish more games and tackle my backlog, as a new PS owner there’s a lot of slightly older Playstation games that I need to go back and try.

Biggest and hardest for me is to stick to one game at a time. I blame you guys mostly because of the great PS+ games and deals. I feel guilty sometime that it’s such a steal. I always jump into other games and I miss out on the plot big time. Starting early this year I got mass effect trilogy and working it one at a time….maybe a sneaky break with knytts psn game. I am so far beating the urge to download tge other games I bought. But certain borderlands 2 will bumped up the list after mass effect.

Greetings Fred.
What habits i would change in 2013? Well back in 2012 i was into battlefield 3 because i have a clan, but then i got ps move and it was something new so i tried it out, but still 2012 was my year of fps games.
In 2013 i think i will stick with the fps style but i would like to try different things i dont wanna only focused in one genrer, so i wanna play if possible all genres, will start with the new DmC and will want to pick up Sly its been a long time i dont play a game like it. Will try something new like The Last Of Us and Beyond and hope some more new stuff will come.
This year i will try to get some more trophies, will also play more Ps Vita and try all incoming apps for it offcourse. Last year i was like Nathan Drake looking and keep looking.. This year iam like Kratos, i know what iam goin to do haha.
I think this year will be my best gaming year.
Now i shall chill out listing to music on my Ps3 and Playing Gravity Rush on the vita, farewell mates

Knowing a lot about a game before you play it can take some of the magic away when you eventually do play it. As a result, tover the past few months I avoided trailers and massive details for games like Far Cry 3, Dishonored and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. As a result, when I played them I loved them even more.
This year I’ll try not to spoil games for myself by avoiding things that might ruin the first-time experience. I always like to know a bit about the game before I buy it, but it’s worth trying to keep it in moderation.
I’m currently avoiding information on Retro City Rampage, which I’m looking forward to picking up on Vita next week.

I must go and play the massive amount of games given through Plus on PS3/Vita as the games stack up and completely eat my hard drive space, I ought to go and buy a 500 gig or 1TB drive in order to fit every free game.

I know what I like, and what I don’t. Boring eh?!

Two main things would be, remembering to charge my Vita before going out and finding it’s got about five precious minutes left.
To start brushing up on my programming skills and giving PlayStation Mobile another go. Haven’t had time since the beta.

Since i survived the 2012 apocalypse i must change my habits!
Lets start with playing more after work, last year was kinda busy but this year i think i will have plenty more time to try some new games
This year i will start by getting a Ps Vita then Ps plus and its goin to be already different from 2012. Offcourse one of my habits its checking the Ps Blog everyday and that will continue for sure, will always keep trying haha:) . This year i would like to try games that are not only sports games, so will get GoW, Sly Raccoon, and any different upcoming games coming out, and if i get the Vita i can continue my gaming habits outside my house that would be great, also would love to try family and party games so i can have fun after a rough day after work with my wife and children.
Another genre i like its RPG and would be awesome to try an FPS RPG game, this year will also play more FPS games and i heard about Dark Souls saw some stuff about it and i want really to try it out and this post made me remember about it.
My habits were more of sports games but this year i will leave sports to the side and start the real gaming experience!

I finished off 2012 with a lot of new games some of which I haven’t even opened yet, right now I don’t have a job so I have to come up with new ways to get a game I want for as little as possible. eBay is good for that. I have a PS3 & a PS Vita I love Playstation but the games for Vita aren’t all that great, they’re lacking in development. Nothing I’ve played so far has gotten me to the point where I don’t want to put it down. In 2013 I’d like to be able to to spend more time completing games and figure out new ways to get new ones. Looking forward to the new titles. I’ve got Playstation Plus and found the God of War multiplayer very entertaining, looking forward to when the whole network is able to play it!

I wouldn’t change a thing cos my gaming takes up a lot of time. lol. Well maybe make less gaming time so can spend more time in the gym and do more drinking on the weekends. Maybe even arrange more gaming parties, get drunk and play with friends. I wonder how hard Rocksmith would be while falling all over the place. lol. Would be an interesting experiment

mine is to play more RPG’s and actually finish them
Too often have i started an RPG and just never finished it due to getting side tracked with an FPS or something else. for instance i bought ME3 on release day and never even opened it untill 4 months after. same with tales of graces F i imported that and only opened it after it was released here lol

Reducing my backlog, it’s about time that I finish Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Planning to buy a PSVita somewhere in 2013. That will be hopefully the major changes.

this year HOPEFULLY i will get rid of some of these gaming habits:
1- playing games when i need to complete deadlines for work: i’ve lost count of the amount of times i’ve promised myself not to play on my PS3 and do work, but instead go ‘oh i’ll just play for an hour and then i’ll work’… THREE HOURS LATER… ‘umm yeah i should stop now’.. ANOTHER 2 HOURS LATER… ‘ok i’ll stop now… but im hungry’
2- buying games when i still have a ton of games to complete: i’ve completed 3 out of 30 games from playstation plus, then i went and bought Sleeping Dogs, Dishonored and Hitman Absolution… what is wrong with me?
3- find someone to complete Dead Island with me: im stuck in the jungle, this game is too hard to complete on your own!!
4- i need to get some platinum trophies!! the only one i’ve got is The Walking Dead, which “SPOILERS AHEAD” you get all trophies just for playing the episodes. i think im on 97% for Skyrim? just need to find someone and marry them!

My New Years resolution is to stop using google to find hidden trophies I feel like a dirty little cheat!!!!

Well Ideally I want to save some money lately and notice allot of games I have missed for the ps3 over the years so might start picking them up and adding them to my collection (I have 73 ps3 games on my shelf lol)
I also think I need to buy more Vita games, sadly Sony they are way to expensive at the moment when were talking £20+ for a portable game.
But other than that I would love to play more, Gaming is part of my main life and don’t regret it, But due to me now starting a work trial im going to have allot less time on my hands

Actually play the games in my backlog rather than continually adding to it (the backlog) without actually ever playing the majority of them for more than five minutes.

I’m pretty sure I, like most people on PS+ should really try at least to get through the games PlayStation keeps giving us. I seriously suck at this, I start games and then get new ones O_O I was half way through Vanquished then I got Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and was going through it then you guys gave me Mortal Kombat ;__; I don’t have the organisational skills to balance all the half played games I have. Please don’t pick me to win.. There is no way I could get through an RPG like Borderlands 2 especially since I’m only like a third through the first and Ni no Kuni is coming out soon!!!

For me it’s all about less trophy hunting more enjoying the pure gaming experience.
For years I have been ruled by trophy lists and would shun games that had no trophys or play a game that was bad just for trophys (Hanna Montana the shame) so for me 2013 will prob give me less time to game but when I do I’m going to enjoy it and like I say not be ruled by those trophy pops
Fyi the 2 future PlayStation fans arrived yesterday

I would have to say for me ‘Trophy Hunting’. The first couple of years I had my ps3 it was all about the gaming, I think I had like only 6 platinum trophies, but last year it was bumped up to 23 or so. This actually affected what games I played first, but then I played the Walking Dead for the first time last week, and that changed everything for me. If anyone doesn’t know, all you have to do is complete the game for the platinum trophy, however as I was getting more engrossed with the story, the trophies didn’t matter, they were only there as a guide for how long I had left until the episode ended. Due to how good the game was, when the Platinum popped, I was actually a bit disappointed to get it as I didn’t want the story to end. This actually re-taught me to enjoy the game for what it is and not just for trophies, and in future that’s what I’m going to do for my gaming new years resolution
.

Seeing how I’m in a financial pinch, my gaming habits will have to chance drastically. The overall plan is to decrease my money spent on games. I’ll probably spend less time gaming as well, but I plan to up the quality of the games I AM playing.
Other than that I’ll be reading. Still have to work my way through the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, and ‘Malazan Book of the Fallen’ series. Nothing like bridging the gap between awesome games than reading awesome books.

Actually have a few gaming related ‘resolutions’ this year…
I have a mass of unfinished games and even though I’ve had a PS3 for a very long time – I’m at a pitiful level 9 on the trophy front… That must change this year.
Also – I’ve resolved to give my Ouya console coming in March a thorough chance. Try everything that becomes available and make my Google Apps compatible with it.
and lastly…
I’ve been messing about making hobby games and demo’s for years – but this year will finally see the release of a commercial product. Development is already underway and I’ve promised myself it will be out this year…
My family have resolved to not see me for the year… unbeknownst to them anyway.

I will create an healhty gaming schedule for me.
These past couple of years I’ve been playing long hours from time to time. I mean, I’d spent weeks without touching the console and then just play it one day from dawn to dusk with very small pauses for meals.
Not only is that very unhealthy it also has a side-effect of not always connecting me with the game since I forget parts of the story and it’s harder to memorize and develop the moves and skills for each game. And some times the “hype” also dies since it’s been so long since I played those games and end up leaving them halfway through.
This year I’m going to open up a few hours every week to play video-games. Maybe some weeks I’ll be able to play just an hour and maybe in other weeks I’ll be able to play two hours everyday but in the end I’ll be much happier since I’ve played more and finished more games and wont be risking my health.

Interesting question. As the technical quality keeps improving I plan to keep being relatively strict in that matter, as far as expectations go, and try to only get the better games on release at full price. It has been an expensive gaming year for me, not to mention all the dlc and psn exclusive games, and the backlog keeps rising. So the ones that aren’t priority will get bumped down for purchase at pricecut, especially considering how quickly they get bumped down in price lately. Might even try out online shopping for a change, as the standard price for a new game is 65 Euros here and with the amount of games I get, it adds up..
Playing less in general wouldn’t be a bad thing either, I’ve been a complete hermit ever since I’ve gotten my 52 inch Bravia.. On the other hand, I couldn’t be more excited about the last batch of PS3 exclusives and get to see and experience the next gen.

My resolution is to spend more time playing less time sleeping.
I got 170+ games on my 1TB HDD and i’ve only finished like a handful of them, so i gonna go through them 1 by 1 and not moving to the next till i’ve finished the 1 before it on the list. Also if possible can someone mention to the people who do the firmwares, can they add an Alphabetical order to the game sorting list, cause my game list seems messed up with games starting with p then f then d then s. I find things much easier when they are in alphabetical order.

I’ve planned a special challenge for myself this year: I’m going to do a 12 months of gaming!
Each month, I’m going to choose one and only one game, and I’m going to play that game for the entire month. After the month, I hope to have finished the game, and maybe even gotten a platinum for it. After that, I’m going to leave that game alone, and move onto the next one.
The game can either be an RPG, that will require numerous hours, just to get ahead in the Single Player, or, it can be a FPS like Black Ops II, which I can finish the SP in a few days, after which I have to concentrate on the MP.
By the end of the year, I will have played twelve games to the fullest, instead of the usual, where I play dozens and dozens of games, but all of them for a very short time. I had a left-over from last year with Mass Effect 3, but I jsut finished that one, so now I have to choose my game for January.
Any suggestions?
On a side-note, wasn’t there going to be a change in rules for the Weekend Debate?
