The Weekend Playlist, 19th January 2013

thin Blog-banner-weekend-playlist

Good morning all! After a favourable reaction last week, we’ve decided to take The Weekend Playlist to full season. This week’s special guest is Mr Gordon Midwood, the mad genius behind Derrick the Deathfin, which is currently on sale on PSN. Here we go:

Fred - LBP Vita

Fred Dutton, SCEE Blog Manager

What was the last video game you played?
It’s been another heavy week of Far Cry 3, but the most literal response to the question is LittleBigPlanet PS Vita on the bus home last night. I’ve just started it, and it’s predictably lovely.

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
Horror flick The House at the End of the Street. 90 minutes of my life I won’t get back :(

What was the best book or article you read this week?
A great piece on GamesIndustry.biz about violence in videogames. In the wake of the gun control brouhaha over in the US this week, it made for a very thought-provoking read.

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
I’m in a bit of a dry spell right now. Something old perhaps? Jonathan Coulton – JoCo Looks Back?

jawad - persona

Jawad Ashraf, PlayStation Store Content Coordinator

What was the last video game you played?
Persona 4 Golden, of course! I’m inching my way through it. 60 hours in and I still feel like there’s much to do!

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
A live action rendition of one of my favourite movies, Toy Story Live Action. I only saw the first 20 minutes but I was quite impressed! I’ve really gotta get me a Woody doll…

What was the best book or article you read this week?
I read in a local paper that plans for a new cinema could go ahead. It’s been 10 years without a local cinema!

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
A bunch of game soundtracks (Okami, ZOE) mixed with some Korean tunes from the likes of the great Epik High.

chris fifa-13

Chris Howe, PS Store and Plus Coordinator

What was the last video game you played?
FIFA 13. Always a winner and great on the PS Vita for the commute to and from Sony towers!

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
I went to see Gangster Squad on Monday and it was brilliant. I’d recommend it to anyone!

What was the best book or article you read this week?
I’m sure many of you read the same thing, but horse meat in burgers!??! What is that about?! No more burgers for me please!

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
I’m going back a few years today and listening to The Kooks – Inside In Inside Out.

gordon - to the moon

Gordon Midwood, Head of Fresh Produce, Different Tuna

What was the last video game you played?
To The Moon, which is a very touching and lovely PC game.

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
I have been watching a lot of Africa, the BBC documentary show. I have to say I love it; such stunning cinematography.

What was the best book or article you read this week?
Ah-hah! I have been reading Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini. It’s a fascinating book which I was lead to it via this amazing article on a professional pickpocket. I have been employing some of the psychological techniques in the book in my everyday life and it has already helped me to achieve some amazing things: for example, featuring twice on PlayStation Blog in one week!

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
That question sounds entirely too youth-orientated to be directed at me. The soundtrack to my weekend will probably be that of the tortured screams of children denied a sixth packet of sweets. I can tell you what music I listened to today though! Matta, who are some pretty cool dubstep artists, and Monster Magnet, who are some not-pretty cool not-dubstep artists.

Did you enjoy this?

Last game played:
Started having a try of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning last night. I’m a noob when it comes to RPGs, but as this is supposed to be quite combat-centric, I thought I’d give it a whirl…. especially as I got in the sale at my local supermarket for £7..!!

Last film watched:
Got Dredd on blu-ray this week so watched that again. Saw it twice at the cinema as well… I love that film.

Last book/article read:
Very boring book on Excel 2010 formulas by John Walkenbach. Useful though.

Currently listening to:
Got the Dredd soundtrack on my playlist this week lol. Also some older Clutch albums and the second Down album – A Bustle in your Hedgerow. Awesome.

    Fred Dutton 19 January, 2013 @ 11:37 am

Dredd was good fun I thought. Very early ’90s direct-to-video, but in a good way, if you know what I mean!

So Jawad is importing games from US?

That’s okay.

Last game played: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal – I’ve been hooked on it for weeks now!

Last TV show watched: Fringe series 5 – I’m about half way through and loving it :D

Last book read: Does the Borderlands 2 strategy guide count? :P

Currently listening to: Assassins Creed 3 OST Fight Club – Its so catchy *leaves to listen to it again*

Last game: finished up Max Payne 3 yesterday. Amazing game the whole way through.

Tv series: South Park and Californication, which had a rather weak first episode of the season this week.

Book: Game of Thrones for the hundredth time.

Music: Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Queen

I am glad to see this feature again Fred :-)

What was the last video game you played?
I’m currently working my way through the excellent InFamous 2 and to give things a bit of continuity I am being just as evil in this game as I was in the first InFamous. I like games that let you play the bad guy (or at least in a bad way) for a change ;-)

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
That new drama on channel 4 called “Utopia”. It is absolutely superb!!
The only down side being it’s a six parter and I can see the wait between episodes only getting harder as the story develops!!
Wish I had SKY+’ed and watch all six in one sitting but I’m hooked now. 1 week will be harder enough!!

…cont

What was the best book or article you read this week?
A really interesting article about there being MORE female than male gamers these days due to the massive take up of mobile-esque gaming!
Long gone are the images of the spotty teenagers alone in their bedroom (although I imagine they are still there).
I forget where I read it though if I’m honest.

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
Since finding an old mix tape of mine last week I was considering bringing a deck downstairs (maybe two with the mixer ;-)) and having a trip down memory lane with my old 12″ collection while I fry bad guys in New Marais :-D

Last Game i played
after completing infamous 1 no onto infamous 2 (thank you PS+ :D)

Last TV show
after being suggested to by friends i finally gave in and im now watching adventure time :I

Last Book
Seven deadly sins by Corey taylor

Last Music
Bit of Rammstein mainly waidmanns heil amazingly awsome song :D

Game I’m playing: Retro City Rampage on Vita. Nicely kuddled in my bed playing like it’s 1986. Really enjoying it in short doses…

Film/Series: I saw Djanho Unchained. As a (spaghetti) western fan it was one hell of a fun ride, although the movie could’ve used a pair of scissors te cut out some slacking moments…

At home I started watching The Killing 3 on DVD. I loved the first season of this Danish masterpiece, didn’t like the second one as much. 3 is still wait and see, as I’m only 2 episodes into it.

Book: I’m at the end of Murakami’s Underground. I’m a big fan of his work, but this non-fiction novel is not completely my cup of tea. At first I was totally absorbed in the interviews with the victims of teh Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995, but after a while it gets repetitive. It’s like you form some sort of immunity for the horror and the suffering of those people after reading a couple of those reports.

Soundtrack: I’m hard at work at some stuff I have to get done for work, so it’s my favourite working music for me: my playlist with the LOTR and Hobbit Soundtracks!

    Fred Dutton 19 January, 2013 @ 11:40 am

My wife is a big Murakami fan and holds roughly the same opinion – his fiction is much mroe fun, than his non-fiction.

I’m planning to check out Django tomorrow – I’ll let you know what I think!

dark_angel69 19 January, 2013 @ 11:18 am   9

@Fred
Hows the Far Cry 3 Platinum going so far? What chapter are you on? Coulda spent them 90 minutes playing Far Cry 3 instead. lol

@Jawad
Errrrm… what do you plan on doing with that woody doll..??

@Chris
I want to see that movie!! Out of 10 what would you grade it? Sadly the cinema in my town isn’t showing it and neither is the town beside mine. :( Don’t feel like driving 45 mins or an hour to the next cinema. And eat more burgers, there can never be enough. May as-well throw a horse meat burgers party at work and give Fred and Jawad some too. lol

My turn:
Last game played:
Ratchet and Clank Q Force – I don’t like it. :( Wasn’t what i was expecting. Only had one game of it then switched it off. But before that it was Dragon ball z budokai hd collection. Now that’s a decent game. Playing on budokai 3. Not far away from another platinum.

Last film watched:
Hellboy the golden army. Was on TV last night and had nothing else to watch :( Bored out of my mind

Last book/article read:
Funny stuff on Facebook over the Belfast riot

Currently listening to:
Nothing right now

    Fred Dutton 19 January, 2013 @ 11:42 am

Far Cry 3 platinum – steady progress. Without wanting to be too spoiler-y, I’m on the ‘second half’ of the game and have cleared most of the side missions from the first. My skill tree is nearly maxed out, and I’ve crafted most of the kit expansions. Very fun game.

hey Fred! Can you tell Chris if it’s possible to add Mass Effect 3 in the next January sale, or maybe in February?

Cheers and have a nice weekend!

Lunastra78 19 January, 2013 @ 12:03 pm   11

Game played: Tokyo Jungle
What an amazing game. I hope Sony continues taking chances on wild ideas like this. I managed to survive 100 years and get all challenges with the Cheeta yesterday. But those damn cavemen got me in the end! :(

Film watched: None

Book read: Lyonesse
If you like fantasy/sci fi and books where you have no idea what weird stuff will happen next – Jack Vance is your man. I just started Lyonesse but I would recommend Dying Earth and Demon Princes to anyone.

Music listened to: iTunes Shuffle
itunes fav list on shuffle whilst playing Tokyo Jungle. Got everything from Aphex Twin to ZZ Top on there.

Game played: Eyepet with my daughter during day, Dishonored at night when she’s tucked up in bed :)

Film watched: Toy story 3, it’s rarely off at the minute since the little one discovered it…

Book read: The Prince by Machiavelli, not the easiest read in the world but a fascinating insight into the reality of the Ezio Auditore period

Music: Seasick Steve and Dreadzone, until I can get hold of all the songs from the Sleeping Dogs soundtrack!

@Fred, yes Californication just started the 6th season. I wouldn’t recommend watching it anymore though.

Last 2 games I have played have been on my iPad and they are the walking dead assault which is great and the he man game which is also fantastic nostalgia trip.

Last thing I watched was cm punk best in the world which was great been watching lots of wee stuff via nexflix USA planning on watching American horror story asylum ep 11. And 12 later.

Last thing I read was this blog post.

Had no time for ps3 due to being at hospital everyday for 10 days so iPad has saved me tis week.

What was the last video game you played?
I passed the week playing Sound Shapes to platinum. More literal than that, Jetpack Joyride on Vita, that game is so addicting!

What was the last movie/TV show you watched?
I just watched moments ago the first episode of the new season of Archer, always a good laugh :)

What was the best book or article you read this week?
I’m still finishing up the Storm of Swords (Game of Thrones 3rd book), I also read a great piece about the new phones on CES, the xperia z is awesome!

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?
I’m listening to Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack and seriously considering to start re-watching it today, the weather is just terrible to go out.

Last video game played?

Bulletstorm(thanks to maintenance)

Last movie/TV show watched

A certain celebrity version of a reality show.

What was the best book or article you read this week?

Can’t remember.

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?

Nothing as of now.

almighty-slayer 19 January, 2013 @ 3:06 pm   18

Playing a lot of Borderlands 3 right now. Got it for christmas. Logged about 60 hours so far, trying to earn my way to platinum. Just bought the season pass too so have all of the DLC to get through.

Last TV show i watched…I think i watched Big Bang Theory before bed last night. I have been watching Africa on BBCOne like Gordon – it’s really fantastic. That elephant cub a couple of weeks ago completely broke me :(

Music – usually have Music Unlimited playing on random, so whatever comes on! I’m not a massive music fan, really

almighty-slayer 19 January, 2013 @ 3:06 pm   19

Wow, Borderlands 3? I don’t think so…

I meant Borderlands 2!

THE_FORCE 19 January, 2013 @ 3:09 pm   20

Game: Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS. I finally found a reason to charge the handheld up after months/years of gathering dust.

Movie/TV show: well the last TV show I watched was Will & Grace (which never gets old), but I’ve too been sucked in to ‘Utopia’. I love mysterious (CENSORED) like this.

Book/Article: I don’t read books, papers, news, blah blah. The only thing that has caught my eye in the last week on the net are all these new conflicting reports from supposed ‘game industry insiders’ that the PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox720 – and vice versa. Pure conjecture.

Tunes: 80′s funk, and some Newcleus/Electro. That’s proper 80′s Electro…..not this new genre that decided to adopt the name without justification! :/

Game – Ragnarok Odyssey (I’m loving it as its the closest thing to Monster Hunter on the vita)

Movie/ TV – well Godzilla vs Space Godzilla, Utopia and Breaking the Set (on RT)

Book/Article – an article where Oxfam said that the top 100 wealthiest individuals in the world could have ended extreme poverty 4 times over…this gives me an idea for an art project

Tunes – some oldies Psychic TV and some not so old Midnight Juggernauts

TINTINTB303 19 January, 2013 @ 3:46 pm   22

@ The_FORCE

Glad I’m not the only one who managed to catch the first episode of “Utopia”.

I have to admit that I am well & truly HOOKED and that’s only after the first one!!
Impressive and intriguing stuff indeed! :-)

The “chili, sand, bleach and spoon” scene was pretty intense stuff!!!
Those two play such an excellent bad guy double act IMO!

I wouldn’t want them asking me the same question over and over without a clue about what they are on about!! Not my idea of a fun time in the slightest! ;-)

THE_FORCE 19 January, 2013 @ 4:21 pm   23

Yea I found that torture scene pretty full on to be honest, even though you didn’t really see much. I think it’s sometimes worse when you DON’T see the gore so it’s left to your own imagination as to what’s happening!

Cracking first episode though. :)

Played: Last few days I’ve been beating baddies from shadows in Batman AC. I also grind GT5:AE, trying to get Nissan Bluebird for my friend so he can test how it feels to race his car in game.

Watched: I think it’s time to watch Repo the Genetic Opera once again… Zydrate comes in a little glass vial…

Read: Still haven’t finished King Maker, King Breaker…

Listened: Stam1na, I own all their albums…

litterature 19 January, 2013 @ 8:43 pm   25

Play: DmC: Devil May Cry

Watch: Django Unchained

Read:” the Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

Listen: the new BOWIE song

Project2insanity 19 January, 2013 @ 11:09 pm   26

Last video game; PS3: Okami still, found my final treasure. Now trying to catch a specific fish- spent an hour and a half catching 90 fish last night but not the one I want…
Vita: Sumioni, played quite a few levels. Plays well but levels are rather short.

Last movie/TV show; Same as Notlaw1976 on this one. Dredd. I am the law!

Best book or article; I read some wrestling results. I’m getting better at this question. ^^

Soundtracking; Jeez, seems like Gordon Midwood is on a Powertrip. Thanks to him and his psychological techniques, it seems a certain Monster Magnet song is on my playlist now. If only I could remember its name…
Major kudos to Jawad for the Okami soundtrack. Bought that one on disc a while ago.

    Fred Dutton 21 January, 2013 @ 9:14 am

Heh, I was a bit of a Monster Magnet fan back in the day. Maybe I’ll have to dig their stuff out of the loft and revisit…

Dante_Zero 20 January, 2013 @ 3:54 am   27

I finally got my Family Guy platty on Saturday Mornining making it number 145. I’ve been playing my vita mostly of late though as still working my way through New Little Kings story but struggling to find all the hidden things in it. Might put it on hold and give Orgarytme a go on Sunday. Spent this Saturday Night involved in a community game night over http://www.trophiesonpsn where we played Gran Turismo 5 which was awesome and loved the new corvette. Tommorrow more vita playing i guess . Sundays are always busy for me with writing the weekly update on our site and doing a live podcast @6pm so not sure what i might get time for tomorrow. Hopefully get on the PS3 at some point. lol

Stonesthrow 20 January, 2013 @ 6:06 am   28

Lol Fred, sounds like you’re in the same combo I was in a while back. Far cry 3 with some LBP vita in between :p Far cry 3 was a pretty enjoyable Platinum imo, didn’t have to replay the entire game or change my playstyle too much for some trophies, or even invite a complete stranger to get a ‘play the game with a friend’ trophy.. I wish all games had such good ‘trophy development’..

In any case, I’ve been playing the far cry 3 co op a lot untill recently, replayed Mass effect (on ps3 this time, yay!) at the shift of the year, finished an initial playthrough on the new DmC, and have since been completely hooked on the HD version of Okami again.

The Avengers on blu ray for movie of the week. Still impressed by that CGI.

No books and Okami for OST.

    Fred Dutton 21 January, 2013 @ 9:15 am

I’m looking forward to giving Far Cry co-op a whirl when I’m done with the main campaign. Nearly there now – just about to start the final (I think) mission.

Hi.
This week I have been playing Knytt Underground on the Vita on my way home from work. What a great game and free to thanks to the mighty Playstation Plus.

Also been sneaking the odd game of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, in between watching Dexter series 5.

And music wise I have been listening to The Chemical Brothers We Are The Night.

Have a great week Fred.

    Fred Dutton 21 January, 2013 @ 9:16 am

I need to jump back in to Knytt – I gave it 30 minutes or so when it released and generally liked what I saw but I then got distracted by the backlog. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it.

Hexahedronaut 20 January, 2013 @ 12:34 pm   30

First of let me start by saying ALL SKYRIM DLC IN FEB WITH A 50% DISCOUNT! cant wait! well I have for a very long time. but anyway.

What was the last video game you played?
Mass effect 3 about 7hrs in and currently playing the omega DLC and sum multiplayer so I don’t have to grind for my 100% at the end.

What was the last Movie/TV show you watched?
Rhod Gilbert and the flaming baternberg tattoo.. man this guy is hilariously petty. last TV show I watched was match of the day.

What was the best book or article you read this week?
continuing my listen of Mogworld little by little and when its 13hrs long.. gona be listening for a loong time.

What tunes are soundtracking your weekend?

Last game played – Portal 2 (now completed) – if anyone wants to play co-op add me :)

Last Movie/Tv show – Dark Knight Rises (great film) & Friends

Last book/article – read an article on carpel tunnel syndrome and surgery procedure (got a keen interest in the human body)

Dante_Zero 20 January, 2013 @ 5:13 pm   32

Just noticed on that comment i posted before that the link was mega broken somehow. So for those who wanted to access it here is the correct link. trophiesonpsn dot com.

cooldudematt 21 January, 2013 @ 12:49 am   33

Last Game(s) Played – Assassin’s Creed: Revelations & DmC: Devil May Cry.

DmC is amazing and has a very enjoyable story and a fantastic soundtrack. As for Assassins Creed Revelations, I’m trying to get the platinum trophy but the multiplayer is really annoying me.

Last movie(s) watched – Loads

Went to the cinemas to see Texas Chainsaw 3D and it was goretastic and actually gave me a few genuine shocks. Then got home and had a movie marathon of old films with Private Parts, Porky’s, Police Academy & Aliens.

Last TV Show Watched – American Dad

Just watched the episode where they are trapped on the island and they resort to cannibalism. That episode is hilarious. XD

Last Book/Article read – http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/01/18/all-skyrim-dlc-coming-to-ps3-in-february

I’d be surprised if nobody has read this article already.

Last music listened to – Queen Greatest Hits.

Nothing beats a bit of Queen. Especially with hits like Don’t Stop Me Now & Bohemian Rhapsody.
