After enjoying accolades like “Original Game of the Year” and “Best Vita Puzzle Game” in the US, Dokuro finally brings his chalky goodness across the Atlantic Ocean this week. Players in the EU and Australia can finally enjoy Dokuro’s 147 levels of puzzles, platforms, spikes and saw blades.
My past blog entries in the States discussed the story and gameplay at great length, so for our European friends I’d like to talk a bit more about development of this winsome title.
For those unfamiliar with the game, its story revolves around Dokuro, a skeletal member of the Dark Lord’s army, who makes the career change from peon to hero after witnessing the tears of a captive Princess. Filled with newfound determination, Dokuro begins his daring rescue. Unfortunately, the Princess doesn’t even seem to notice he’s there until he quaffs a magical potion that gives him a heroic new appearance and the capacity for fancy sword play.
By swapping forms, players make use of Dokuro’s skeleton and hero forms to solve puzzles and battle foes while safely guiding the Princess to the end of each stage. They also have access to different coloured chalks that can control the environment by drawing ropes, lighting candles or creating pools of water. At regular intervals, Dokuro will encounter a gigantic boss who must be vanquished through a mixture of action and puzzle gameplay, so players will have to be as nimble-minded as they are dexterous!
A fantastical children’s storybook brought to life with a captivating chalk flair, Dokuro is undeniably charming, but it’s got all the depth and challenge one might expect from a robust, first-rate game. This is largely thanks to the game’s director, Noriaki Kazama, who comes from a strong, core-gaming background. His goal was to create a game that was visually striking, fun and accessible while still possessing the challenging appeal that more seasoned gamers would enjoy.
Development began with a simple internal contest at Game Arts. Everyone tossed in game concepts and the winner was the key design element that would later evolve to what we now see.
They knew they were making some kind of escort mission involving a hero who has to pick up a princess and bring her to safety. The definitive art style came later when Kazama was visiting a book store. His first child was about two years old, so he found himself in the children’s section more often than not.
He was so moved by the art style of one particular book, that he was determined to embody that feeling in his current game project. Before long, Dokuro, the Princess and the Dark Lord were taking shape in their signature chalk-art style, but captivating visuals were not enough.
Having worked on hardcore action games, it was crucial for Kazama to make something of style, challenge and substance that could be enjoyed by a large audience. Approaching development with this in mind, his team would constantly design levels, test them on among themselves as well as “non-gamers” and finally strike a perfect balance between failure and success.
For the action-oriented sequences, tight controls were of the utmost importance so the player would never experience a disconnect from the character they controlled. Toward the end, some of the puzzle stages became incredibly difficult, so an option to skip a total of 10 stages was added to let players fully experience the story even if the puzzles stumped them.
When we asked if he had anything to tell his western fans, Kazama said, “Thanks for your passionate interest in Dokuro and his epic adventure. The team and I have poured everything we have into this game. All of us here at PonKotz Troops hope this game provides countless hours of enjoyment for you!”
Dokuro is available from PlayStation Store this Wednesday, 30th January, priced €14.99/£11.99.

Man, I imported Ragnarok Odyssey cause of no word on an EU release date, and had zero hope for Australia since it was Xseed because they’re a horrible publisher who whines about spending $500 to get a game classified to make 10′s or 100′s of times that amount back. I’ve missed out on so many interesting games because of them. If Retro City Rampage could get through on Vita with a loophole about portable games, why doesn’t every publisher take advantage of it? Or at least allow someone else to bring it out
Is there actual dlc planned for Ragnarok? I thought all Japanese dlc was included with the English version, aside from cosmetic stuff like costumes?
Dokuro sounds good but 12 pounds will probably end up being $20 Australian. That’s a bit expensive, so I’ll wait to see if my PS+ membership will help out sometime in the future.

It’s unfortunate we couldn’t give a release date for Ragnarok Odyssey any sooner, but we are working diligently to make it happen over there.
We are planning DLC, and we will have more information as it gets closer to release.
Totally understand wanting to wait on Dokuro, and we hope you enjoy it once you decide to get it!

I just paid for and downloaded Dokuro half an hour ago and it says it’s the trial version on the main menu. When I finished the first boss, the game ended.
Can’t we have a week without screw-ups, eh SCEE? It’s getting ridiculous how badly you manage the store.
Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is still only visible when you search for it in the Vita store.

We are really sorry to hear about this issue, but rest assured we are working hard to correct this matter now.

I also have bought the “Dokuro-trial”. It’s a little bit sad because I really want to play this game.
Anyway, thanks a lot for bringing this game to europe and try to solve this problem fast (:

We are more than happy to bring our games to Europe!
We should hopefully get to the bottom of this matter soon, thank you.

Thanks for looking into this Antonio, and for taking the time to respond. I tried re-downloading Dokuro a few times, but that’s not working – I keep getting a trial version. I really don’t understand how Sony’s systems can be so crappy that they simply can’t replace a file… but many things concerning Sony seem to be… how shall I put it, not optimal.
Keep us updated, please. Much appreciated.
Posted on 30 January, 2013 at 10:39 pm by Antonio Cara
Thanks for your understanding and patience – we hope to have this cleared up shortly.
Dokuro is a ton of fun, and I hope you’ll agree it’s worth the wait!

Hi Antonio, thanks for your earlier reply
I am sure you will get enough sales so you can go off and make us some more awesome games ! and so glad you are bringing Ragnorak Odyssey over to us it will be on my instant buy list !
Just finished my shift at work and been hearing about the Dokuro issues, I want to hold off buying it until the problems have been fixed. so…….is it safe to buy? lol.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 2:46 am by Antonio Cara
I believe it is safe to buy now, but I can’t officially say as much until I know for certain!
What I can officially say is that Ragnarok Odyssey TOTALLY belongs on your instant buy list

Hello what is what wrong with you people. 24 hours and five or sic downloads later and still getting trial version of DOKURO!!! FIX THIS

SCEE has informed us they are working on this issue, and if you have not yet received a refund, you may want to contact their support team.

Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 12:25 pm by cowbanana
Sony, I tried your useless support and I’m none the wiser. If this isn’t fixed tomorrow by noon, I will file a complaint with the Danish consumer protection authorities.
I demand a refund.
I will not stand getting ignored.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:19 pm by Antonio Cara
We understand your frustration, and we assure you no one is being ignored. SCEE is working toward a solution. I have posted an explanation of what happened just below comment 73.

Hi Antonio, thanks again for your reply, still some issues i see, i’ve had the personal pleasure of dealing with Sony’s customer support, and well i’d rather not go down that road, but rest assured i will be checking both blog posts and will purchase as soon as its ‘officially’ fixed. I don’t mind waiting a bit longer
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:20 pm by Antonio Cara
We were assured that the problem was fixed as of 3PM yesterday, so unless you are already experiencing the “demo version bug” you should be able to purchase it successfully now. See below #73 for further details.

Anyone still having problems by gotten the trial version instead?
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:22 pm by Antonio Cara
If you purchased the game during the “demo version bug,” and haven’t received a refund from SCEE, you will need to contact that support for further assistance. I have posted a brief explanation of the incident below comment #73.

Hi everyone, if Antonio is still around, or somebody else(?) I have an issue with my copy of Dokuro. I downloaded the game yesterday (and obviously paid £11.99), but the first screen says I have the trial version??? I tried to re-download it, but the store tried to bill me another £11.99 to do so!!??
Any ideas out there guys?
Regards, Simon.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:24 pm by Antonio Cara
I have posted a response to this issue below comment #73.
You should be able to receive a refund for the “demo version” and download the correct one. If you have not heard from SCEE, you may want to try contacting their support team.

Oooops!!!!!!! Sorry guys, I’ve just read all the previous messages regarding the same issue. Please accept my apologies!

Not a problem, your confusion/frustration in this matter are very understandable.

Having now read through all the messages, I note that Antonio was replying to people and helping to make us feel reassured. BUT it’s now gone awfully quiet out there!! This isn’t nice. I really don’t like paying out £12 only to still not be able to play the game properly.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:25 pm by Antonio Cara
Sorry it went so quiet – we were waiting to hear back from SCEE regarding what happened, and I have posted a brief explanation below comment #73.

One can wonder how hard it is to resolve an issue such as this? And how bloody hard can it be for those responsible for this mess to keep us updated on the situation?
What is this? Amateur hour at babbys first DIY online shop?
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:27 pm by Antonio Cara
There was apparently a glitch when the store went live yesterday and it was not corrected until close to 3PM.
We are really sorry to hear about this inconvenience, but if you have not already received a refund for the “demo version bug” you may need to contact SCEE support.

Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 5:14 pm by Aces73High
I know right!!?
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:31 pm by Antonio Cara
As mentioned, the proper full version is available now, and you should be receiving assistance from SCEE support which will help you obtain the correct game. Thanks for all your patience and understanding in this matter.

So im being asked to buy Dokuro again but the download still is saying its a trial. Looking forward to an update on this.
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:28 pm by Antonio Cara
It’s my understanding that those who were affected by yesterday’s glitch would be able to receive a refund from SCEE and then be able to purchase the proper, full version which is now available. If you have not heard from them, you may need to contact their support team.
74
Posted on 31 January, 2013 at 10:15 pm by Antonio Cara
Thank you for your patience everyone. We have confirmed that users who purchased the game between 9:58AM and 2:58PM received a “demo” version due to technical difficulties on SCEE’s side. Anyone who purchased after that time would have received the proper, full version.
SCEE is working toward a solution, and if you have not yet received a refund, you will need to contact their support.

Well it’s a good job I didn’t buy anything.

Ah, in that case, if you hadn’t purchased it during the glitch, you are safe to do so now.

STILL no refund or update from SCEE!!?? How long is this supposed to take? In the meantime I still don’t have the product I paid for. I’m usually very much a ‘glass half full’ kinda chap, but right now I’m pretty unhappy. Oh and frustrated too.
Posted on 1 February, 2013 at 7:19 pm by Antonio Cara
Hopefully your glass will be COMPLETELY full soon!
Comment #80 has shined a helpful light on SCEE’s plan for this situation, and it should be handled soon.

@ Aces73High
Jawad has responded in the store update blog post.
Everybody who has the demo issue will get automatic refunds. Not sure how long it will take, but last time I got a refund for a faulty download (LBP Vita) it took a couple of days. The refund went to my PSN wallet that time, so I assume this will happen this time as well.
Communication is definitely not something SCEE excels at. They should have standard customer care systems in place in cases like this, to provide clear and timely answers, not run around like headless chickens. Wil they learn and act accordingly? Past experience with SCEE says no, sadly.
Posted on 1 February, 2013 at 7:17 pm by Antonio Cara
I really appreciate you sharing this information here!
Glad to know the refunds will go through, and I hope you don’t face too much delay.

Posted on 2 February, 2013 at 8:17 am by Silent_Gig
I blame the internet for having too many communication routes. lol
Im sitting with my legs crossed waiting for my refund, cant wait to Dokuro – ive been playing the trial over and over and i think im going to be getting this platinum.

Good luck with your patience wait.
Many of the Dokuro trophies are quite reasonable, and a couple may test the very limits of your patience and skill

It is a real shame that what should have been a great launch for a very nice game (I really liked the “premium demo” I got) ends up with customers unable to play and SCEE unwilling to handle things in a timely manner. Latest word on the street is that refunds will happen late next week :/
I find this totally unacceptable, but what can I do? Screaming at SCEE through the few means available to me isn’t doing anything.
I feel for Antonio and GungHo, being dragged through the mud by corporate incompetence.
When companies get so big that the individual customer means crap to them it’s really hard to penetrate the wall of unwillingness they hide behind, like cowards.
Posted on 4 February, 2013 at 7:04 pm by Antonio Cara
Hopefully the refunds should arrive soon, and you will be able to enjoy the game!

Posted on 5 February, 2013 at 8:56 am by cowbanana
Still no refund. Not even an answer from Sony’s support. I’ve contacted them again.
This hasn’t been a nice experience, at all.
Posted on 6 February, 2013 at 12:32 am by Antonio Cara
We are still in contact with SCEE to make sure this issue is getting solved. We are also forwarding the feedback we have been collecting on our end. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer.

After writing a second time (I wrote the first mail last wednesday) I finally got confirmation that the Scandinavian branch is aware of the Dokuro problem and that they will issue refunds soon.
Unfortunately I had to resort to threats of debt collection and the Danish consumer protection authorities to pry an answer from them. Not something I usually do, or take pride in, but when I meet corporate indifference and generally abysmal service I fight with the few means available to me as a consumer.
A simple reply on the next business day after my initial inquiry would have been much more to my satisfaction. Getting ignored for several days makes me “fight the man” out of sheer principle. I don’t take well to being ignored.
Time to move on… and hopefully enjoy Dokuro soon
I was really pleased with the small taste I got.
Posted on 6 February, 2013 at 12:34 am by Antonio Cara
Glad you liked the demo. There is certainly a heck of a lot more to enjoy once you get the full version! I was genuinely surprised by the amount of content packed into this game.
