GRID 2: release date and new gameplay details

Grid 2

Hello racing fans! It’s been a busy few weeks for GRID 2. We’ve confirmed a 31st May release date in Europe, announced some pre-order bonuses and today I’m here to talk a little bit more about the game. So let’s jump straight in…

Introducing: World Series Racing (WSR)
At Codemasters we love racing of every flavour, but professional motorsports has always been splintered into different disciplines and formulas around the world. One of the questions we’ve kicked around for years in the Studio has been simple – who is the greatest? Which driver from which series is the best?

In GRID 2, we’re looking to answer that question with World Series Racing – WSR. It’s a new motorsport series that starts from the grassroots and grows into a huge Prime Time competition.

Racers from different disciplines – street racers, drifters, track racers and more – all come together in one global series, with each driver moving in and out of their comfort zone. So who is the greatest? Join WSR in GRID 2 and find out…

We’ve got a range of diverse events in GRID 2, so let’s introduce a few of them to you…

Race
Well, GRID isn’t a driving game, it’s a racing game. It’s an important distinction. So it goes without saying that one of the game modes within GRID 2 will be Race. You know the deal, start fast, finish first and take home the glory. GRID 2 introduces a lot of new modes and features, but ultimately, we’re determined to make the best in-game racing experience whenever you’re behind the wheel and straight up racing is the heartbeat of the game.

Eliminator
Eliminator is a constant fight for position. As the event unfolds, any racer that is in last position when the time runs out is eliminated from the race and the winner is the racer who survives all eliminations. Keep up with the pack or you’re all but guaranteed to be eliminated, but careful as you trade paint with your competitors as one false move can have catastrophic results…

GRID 2 on PS3

Checkpoint
Checkpoint is all about how you handle under pressure as you aim to cover as much distance before the timer expires. You’ll only have a limited time to make it to the next checkpoint so you’ll be expected to hit the apexes and find the right braking points to shave precious seconds off your time.

And there’s more to come.

Locations
Variety is the name of the game when it comes to the racing locations in GRID 2. We have three broad stages of racing – Street Racing, Track Racing and Open Road Racing. You’ll be pleased to know we’ve recently confirmed the addition of two new circuits, Brands Hatch and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, two famous motorsport Meccas which join the previously announced Red Bull Ring and Yas Marina.

Away from these tracks you’ll be able to race around cities such as Chicago, Paris and Barcelona as well as being able to take to the road along the California Coast.

Still to come
We’re hurtling down the track and that May 31st release date is getting ever closer. Fear not though, because between now and then we’ve still got lots of exciting news left to share with you all. We’ve got new locations to reveal, new cars and game features… and we’ll have a whole loads of videos coming too.

We can’t wait to see you on the track.

Did you enjoy this?

Will Demolition Derby return? That mode was fun.

No demolition derby but there will be modes that utilise the best in class damage system that features within GRID 2.

Didn’t play the first one, but I’m looking forward to this one. PS3trophies.org is making the trophy list for it so I just have to play this. Looks great.

I want asian cities track… Hong Kong, Shanghai, tokyo, teipei…

This game have a serious problem:
NO COCKPIT VIEW!

I’ll have to pass, unfortunately.

Great to hear you loved the first GRID, we’re sure you’ll love this one. Can’t wait to hear what you think :)

Absolutely loved the Original GRID and was a big fan of TOCA and the recent Codemasters F1 games. Please can you confirm if the new GRID2 game will have dynamic weather and pit stops, as these are some of the features sadly missing from the original game which would round out the strategic side of racing. This for me is a key feature.

Thanks

I loved the first game. Definitely one of the best racing games. I just have one question. The thing that you have your own team in the first game, is it going to be a feature in Grid 2 or?

Can’t wait for May 31.

The first game was brilliant, more of the same please!

will the t500rs is compatible with this?

We’ll have a full list of supported wheels very soon, but we are looking at supporting as many as possible.

any destruction derby tracks?

I loved the first GRID and was delighted to hear about a second GRID. I’m a massive racing game fan and would love to work at Codies as an artist.

GRID 2 was the first game on my list at the Eurogamer Expo in September and it didn’t disappoint.

I can’t wait for the 31st May and the pre-order bonus of Brands Hatch.
Keep up the good work guys!!!!

    Hey Rico3k :)

Great to hear you’re a fan of the original GRID! Be sure to keep an eye out on our official website and the careers page in particular as we do often have vacancies opening up. Good luck on your quest to become an artist :)

Awesome to hear you came and played it at the EG Expo, we’re really pleased with how the game has evolved since then and I’m sure when you next play it you’ll notice the difference almost instantly.

We’ll see you on the track!

I’ve been a huge fan of the TOCA series from day one, and the reboot ‘GRiD’ is still one of my favorite racers of all-time.

Fans have been screaming for a “sequel” for years (although you could argue that it’s actually TOCA 5), and finally…finally…you’ve listened.

Great news.

    Thanks Scruffy_P

GRID 2 sure has been a long time coming but it’ll be worth the wait, promise :)

Hi,

very much looking forward to this. GRID is still the only great racing game for this generation of consoles.

But will there be split screen multiplayer going to be on GRID 2?

One thing i would love to know is, does GRID2 allow cockpit view?

I’ve played all racing games using that camera and do not like any other view when racing. Thanks

Question: What would the online feature? Is it just race & level up or is there somthing more interesting involved? Hmm If there is no reply im just going to take it there isint lol :P

Will there be any touring car championships in Grid2? Was a huge fan of the touring cars championship in the first one.
