PlayStation welcomes more indie developers to current and future PS platforms at GDC 2013

GDC 13

It’s been quite some time since I’ve been on PlayStation Blog. To reintroduce myself, I am the vice president of publisher and developer relations for SCEA, which is a fancy way of saying that I’m working day-in and day-out with my team here to get the world’s best and brightest developers to bring their great gaming experiences to all of our PlayStation platforms.

Since my last post, I’ve joined SCEA and expanded the incredible team that focuses on fostering relationships with publishers and developers that share our goal of bringing the best games to you, the PlayStation community. With that said, the publisher and developer relations team has exciting news to deliver tonight.

During this year’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, our team has put a strong focus on independent game developers. This evening, we collaborated with the PlayStation Network team to host a PlayStation Indie Arcade event, where we gave hands-on demos for more than 25 indie games that are coming to all PlayStation platforms. Our goal is to continue to work with the independent developer community to provide fantastic games you can’t find anywhere else.

Here’s a quick list of the upcoming games heading to PlayStation Network:

  • Blacklight: Retribution – PlayStation 4
  • Primal Carnage: Genesis – PlayStation 4
  • Ibb & Obb – PlayStation 3
  • Rain – PlayStation 3
  • Sportsfriends (including Johann Sebastian Joust, BaraBariBall, Hokra and Super Pole Riders) – PlayStation 3
  • Divekick – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Dragon Fantasy Book II – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Guacamelee! – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Hotline Miami – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Luftrausers – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Spelunky – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Thomas Was Alone – PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
  • Friend Network App – PlayStation Vita
  • Limbo – PlayStation Vita
  • Metrico – PlayStation Vita
  • Velocity Ultra – PlayStation Vita
  • A Virus Named Tom – PlayStation Mobile
  • Beatdown in Treachery City – PlayStation Mobile
  • Crumble – PlayStation Mobile
  • Crystallon – PlayStation Mobile
  • Don’t Wake the Bear – PlayStation Mobile
  • Hermit Crab in Space! – PlayStation Mobile
  • Oh, Deer! – PlayStation Mobile
  • Rymndkapsel – PlayStation Mobile
  • Ten By Eight – PlayStation Mobile

Where relevant, click through for Blog posts offering additional detail on each title.

As you may have noticed, our team is going full steam ahead by not only providing support for developers on our current platforms, but also for those working on next-gen titles. We’re expanding our indie support for PlayStation 4 with games like Primal Carnage: Genesis and Blacklight: Retribution, which will join titles like The Witness to ensure you’ll have great indie game experiences on our next gaming console.

This recent influx in developer support for PlayStation has come through our continued effort to create a flexible and developer friendly environment. We’re also focusing on burgeoning platforms like PlayStation Mobile by offering Unity support, coming later this year, to make it easier than ever for developers to bring their games to PlayStation-certified Android devices and PS Vita.

Over the next couple of days, we will be inviting some of the developers from the titles listed above onto the Blog to give you more information on their upcoming indie games. Stay tuned for more!

Did you enjoy this?

Terraria won’t be out tomorrow, but it’s coming to EU soon. We’ll have an update from the publisher on Thursday.

Does this mean more delayed games for Sony’s frustrated European customers or will $CEE now put some effort into releasing games in at least the same week as other regions? It’s nice to see Sony developing a relationship with indie developers but lets not forget who pays the bills.

Rytteren 26 March, 2013 @ 7:06 am   6

must say this is great. still hoping for playstation mobile to get new contries (denmark yeah!), and trophy support.

Erroneus 26 March, 2013 @ 7:56 am   7

It’s great to see Sony is showing that consoles also can do indies and there are room for creative and alternative titles.

But you need to do something about PlayStation Mobile, which right now is caught in Limbo (pun intended), with the low amount of countries it’s available in and vital features like trophies and online leader boards missing.

razordude 26 March, 2013 @ 8:18 am   8

So, you’re going “full steam ahead”. It sure looks like you’re porting a bunch of games from that platform. I hope you remember that they sell for a couple of pounds on their webstore and while the inclusion of extras and trophies is nice (and especially on the vita), something that sells for a couple of pounds shouldn’t sell for double that on PS.

ShadowDoGGG 26 March, 2013 @ 9:11 am   9

I don’t give praise very often so this means a lot from me but Sony… you have been doing an amazing job recently.

For example, not simply outbidding Nintendo for monster hunter and making your own version, very good strategy.

Using PC architecture for PS4 and allowing someone to help you with a game, love the idea.

You aren’t forcing move onto your developers, also good idea.

Keep it up Sony, I am most likely only going to get the PS4 and/or Wii U but not the xbox. Even a rumour about used games being blocked is enough for me to stay away.

mman1235 26 March, 2013 @ 9:17 am   10

yacht club games should input their new game “shovel knight” to PSN.
it looks really awesome and it probably will get funded soon :)

antikewl 26 March, 2013 @ 9:50 am   11

Wow.

Carnivius_Prime 26 March, 2013 @ 9:55 am   12

I’m not a big fan of indie games but I’d like if Iji made it’s way to PS3 and Vita. And Return to Sector 9 is another old fave.

Terarded 26 March, 2013 @ 9:59 am   13

no thank you! ive got playstation plus so i know just how bad indie games are. sooooo many 0%’s in my trophy list :(

Soooooooooo much PlayStation games incoming on the PS3 & PSVita & PS4 it is hard to keep up!!! :D Keep it up SONY. The PlayStation brand is the best in the WORLD;)

dark_angel69 26 March, 2013 @ 10:32 am   15

I was going to say what Carl-G said. lol. Yep it is hard to keep up indeed. Need to tell them developers to slow down a bit. lol. What is with all these awesome stuff out this year?!?! Coulda done with them the last lota years. This is like the best gaming year ever! My credit card is going to be taking some abuse. Sorry credit card, need my games and PS4!

Huono_peleis 26 March, 2013 @ 10:59 am   16

You forgot to mention that almost half of the games listed will be available only in UK and a few other countries. Why Playstation is the only gaming platform that can’t manage a global release?

btw. Where is CS:GO? Almost a year and not a single explanation why it is missing or when it will be available.

CartBlanche 26 March, 2013 @ 11:23 am   17

If Sony would allow games built with MonoGame onto both PS3 and PS4, there would be some other great indie games like Infinite Flight ( ok a sim ), Draw a Stickman : Epic, ARMED!, Bastion, Fez, Skulls of the Shogun, or Survivalcraft that could easily be ported to PS3 and PS4.
I hope Sony let’s us.

rospondek 26 March, 2013 @ 11:29 am   18

And what happened to Kick Beat?

taurus82 26 March, 2013 @ 11:32 am   19

Does this apply to european developers?
Is The Studio/Studio Output now ALLOWED to make music visualisation?

Marrsterhausen 26 March, 2013 @ 11:57 am   20

So glad to see SONY at last investing in gettting indie developers on board, it’s been a long time coming… I’ve long been envious of Microsoft’s ability to get indie developers on side. All we need now is FEZ, Bastion, Minecraft…

Hexahedronaut 26 March, 2013 @ 12:17 pm   21

@16 Europe isn’t getting CS:GO it became an American exclusive… So you should probably think of making a US account to get it.

@19 Minecraft devs contract with MS is probably still going so we should wait to see what happens after it ends. Bastion unless they’ve announced something it’s never coming to PSN, looks like one of them games that forgot the PS3 just like supermeatboy. and Fish is in talks with Sony about FEZ but PLEASE MAKE FEZ HAPPEN SONY and ill look past every mistake you’ve ever made!.

Cr4z7WolF 26 March, 2013 @ 12:41 pm   22

what about kick beat?? another game that is not going to see tne light ??

and dont forget supermeatboy, on vita would be great ….

Player42791 26 March, 2013 @ 1:39 pm   23

@Fred

Any idea when Ibb & Obb is out? I know it’s in the next few months but is there any chance you can be a wee bit more specific? :p

    Fred Dutton 26 March, 2013 @ 1:42 pm

Alas, not at present, but we’ll have a post from Sparpweed in the next month or two to reveal more. Stay tuned…

FBZ1501 26 March, 2013 @ 1:45 pm   24

Great news and good work. The Vita is getting the support it needs at last!

bradigor1981 26 March, 2013 @ 2:26 pm   25

My wallet is crying in the corner.

Great news on all the games coming so many I want to get.

monoliet 26 March, 2013 @ 4:41 pm   26

supersmith2500 26 March, 2013 @ 5:05 pm   27

Sounds like a good list of games so far. Hope to see great AAA Vita games this year. But still, I hope SCEE announces the White Vita later this year, the US have got two colours last year while us were stuck with black. =\

Cpt_Nutsaw 26 March, 2013 @ 6:15 pm   28

Hotline miami to the vita!? That’s my favorite game, can’t wait!

vonhammer 26 March, 2013 @ 8:09 pm   29

So no Terraria for us tomorrow then. I’ll be interested in hearing why, especially if it’s available globally on other hardware.

Singspam 26 March, 2013 @ 8:24 pm   30

CartBlanche 27 March, 2013 @ 3:23 pm   31

@Marrsterhausen, did you see my comment about MonoGame. Fez, Bastion etc use MonoGame/XNA. The missing piece is that Sony need to allow our team to port MonoGame to PS3 and PS4 and then games like Fez and Bastion could easily be ported to Sony’s platforms. Other great titles would be Infinite Flight (a flight sim), Draw a Stickman : Epic, ARMED! and even Skulls of the Shogun.
