Football Manager lines up PS Vita debut

Hello everyone in PlayStation land! My name is Miles and I’m the Studio Director at Sports Interactive. We’re a development team based in London which has been making games for over 20 years, specialising in football management games. You may well have played our Football Manager Handheld games in the past on your PSP, or even Football Manager on the PC or Mac if you have one of those home computer things.

As you may have seen during the gamescom PlayStation press conference, we’ve confirmed tonight that Football Manager is coming to PS Vita! Or, to be exact, Football Manager Classic is coming to PS Vita.

So what is Football Manager Classic?

Well, it’s a mode that was added into last year’s PC and Mac version of Football Manager as a quicker way to play the full Football Manager experience. It has all you’d expect from FM – our huge database of players researched by a team of over 1,500 scouts around the world, a 3D match engine showing the action, a full tactics module, realistic transfers, AI that makes both players and managers act as you’d expect them to in the real world, and dozens of playable leagues, with hundreds of manageable clubs from all over the world, but has been streamlined for a faster playing experience.

It does, however, have way more features than the PSP Football Manager Handheld releases which you may have played on your PS Vita before. And, to re-iterate, the full FM 3D match engine!

So why on PS Vita, and why now? I’ve spoken in the press quite a bit over the years about how I’m a fan of PS Vita – it allows me to play games on the move that no other handheld platform can handle – but we weren’t sure how successful one of our games could be on it. I had a call from Sony asking for a meeting, and who am I to say no?

Shahid and his team came in to see me last Summer and I explained to them that whilst I’d love to do something, we simply didn’t have enough people to be able to do it – it would mean diverting people in the studio away from working on Football Manager, and that pays for us to be able to have these great careers making games. We also don’t have a lot of experience making console games, so I was worried about the learning curve for all of us at the studio.

I was expecting Sony to walk out in disgust, but to my delight and surprise, they just said “so how can we help you? We want to play your game on our Vitas. The community wants to play your games on their Vitas.”

After a pretty short discussion, they’d agreed to provide loads of help to us to make it happen. We then spoke to our sister studio, Hardlight, who are brilliant at console and mobile development (well, any development really) and they offered their help too. And introduced us to a bunch of really talented developers at Little Stone, who also offered their help and full attention to try and make this ambitious project happen. How do you get a PC game, fully featured, onto PS Vita? You call on geniuses to help you, that’s how!

The best thing about all of this is that not only will you now get to play Football Manager Classic on a PS Vita but, for the first time ever, if you have the game on PC, Mac or Linux, you’ll be able to play the game across all platforms. Play the game at home on your computer, upload the saved game to the cloud, download on your PS Vita, and continue to play on the bus. Anytime, any place, anywhere.

I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this possible. Sony, Hardlight, Little Stone and, of course, the teams at SI and SEGA. But most importantly, I want to thank you, the PlayStation community, for telling Sony that you want to play our games on PS Vita. Without that happening, I would not have got the call from Shahid in the first place.

You’ll be able to find out more information on the game as we announce it on our website, on Twitter or my twitter account and I’m sure right here too.

I hope you’re as excited about this as we are – and I really hope you enjoy playing the game on your PS Vita with cross-save when it’s released!

Hi Miles.
Is the cross save only with classic mode? Can I play my normal pc save with the vita classic version

The Vita version is classic mode. So yes, you can play Classic mode saves from PC, Mac or Linux on your Vita.

Will this have trophy support also? I hope so.

This is fantastic news I asked for a Vita version of FM to a member of SI on twitter before and got told to play the PSP version, I said I didn’t want a PSP version Im asking for a Vita version because I want touch screen, better graphics engine and trophy support, the reply was I want a cure for cancer but we don’t always get what we want and then they blocked me.

Im glad that SI have been able to make this game and that Sony pushed for it. Thanks to everyone involved and the guy on twitter I hope he realises theres a fanbase for this game.

Oh miles! Ive just realised it was YOU! who said this to me on twitter. Well you went about it a wrong way to a fan of the series but im glad the title has been able to be made.

Oh wow! FM2009-13 take 4 of my top 5 spots, of my most played games on Steam. And just after I decided to take another FM break, this news follows. I … will … stay … strong.

Logging on here specifically to show I’m stoked for this! I put millions of hours into the Amiga and early PC versions of Championship Manager as well as the PSP versions and this news is more than I could’ve hoped for!

Heck I might even buy the PC version to enjoy the cross-save function!

Thanks SI and Sony!

I had never comment any news before, but I just had to comment on that one…

This is an absolutely amazing news, FM 2014 on Vita, Cross save with PC/Mac version, all include, I have no words to describe how excited I was when I heard it.

Thank you very much Sony and SI, wonderful work on that one, keep it coming!

This is the greatest announcement today, so happy right now.
Do you know if this game will be released in Germany or are there licensing issues?

I would like to have it as a digital download instead of importing it as a retail version.

This is awesome news. I will rain terror down on Europe with Bayern Munich:D

@Pesico
Pff, Bayern. That’s as if you’d unlock a Darth Vader god mode cheat in an action game. So evil! ^^

@Golwar^^I’m gonna play with other teams as well. Fun to use low division teams to try and make it into the big leagues as well. But I do have to play with my favorite team as well.

I failed school primarily because of Champ Man. I regret nothing. Buying this for sure.

Atlast ive been waiting for this to happened! I smell alot of gametime, hours after hours playing this. Thank you for making this happened.

I jumped out of my seat yeterday when this was announced,

Lets hope no trophy to win every league, or maybe the main 5

great news the main reson i got a VITA (and then got worrid FM will never come out) because bigger screen can fit more on, tuch sceen a bit like a music, trophys (hopefully). and hopefully 2 or more players. i reson i never got FM on PSP even thow i wanted to. has is got 2 or more players? and a bit less inportent but still would be fun and make the gaming more better will there be a edit mode?
