Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters launches today – try it for free

001

Fighters! It’s been a while! Today I would like to talk about Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters which will be available FREE on PlayStation Store from this Wednesday, 25th September.

So, what is Dead or Alive?
For the uninitiated, Dead or Alive is a 3D fighting game series that first hit arcades in 1996. After first gaining attention for its intuitive fighting system, the series has since gone on to sell around the world. The series was brought back for the first time in series years with the release of Dead or Alive 5 in September last year, boasting updated graphics and fighting mechanics.

What’s new in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate?
In Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, developer Team NINJA has added an abundance of new online features, stages, game modes and the addition of both new and fan-favourites to our already extensive cast of fighters to deliver the ‘ultimate’ in fighting entertainment with features enjoyable from casual to competitive fighters.

002

We have added several fan-favourite characters to the biggest roster in franchise history such as the return of Ein, Leon, the introduction of the Dragon Shrine Maiden Momiji and Fiend Hunter Rachel from the Ninja Gaiden series as well as Jacky from SEGA’s Virtua Fighter. In addition, players can expect a plethora of new costumes, several gorgeous interactive arenas, robust training and ranking modes for increased competitive play, and upgraded online functionality and features.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate delivers heightened competitive play with the addition of new modes such as Team Fight mode, allowing players to create teams of up to seven characters to compete offline against other players. Improved training modes have also been added providing new lessons for Tutorial mode.

The Move Details from Dead or Alive 5 Plus (for the PS Vita) has been expanded in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate giving players highly-detailed information to study and implement in to their game plan. Nearly 1000 titles are available with a huge library for each character. Battling in different modes, clearing new missions and other new challenges unlock titles to be used to customise player profiles.

About Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters

  • The core game is free to play, with some gameplay elements available for purchase
  • All stages are available so users can enjoy almost all DOA5U features at no cost
  • Four characters (Kasumi, Ayane, Ryu Hayabusa, and Hayate) are playable, along with every mode except Story mode
  • Fight not only with other players of the free version, but also with players of the retail version of DOA5U
  • Unlocked titles, costumes, and Story mode progress can be carried over from Dead or Alive 5 on PS3
  • The free version is for PlayStation 3 only

003

DOA5U: Core Fighters players who purchase all unlock keys separately (characters, Story mode, and music) are eligible to earn trophies the same as players who purchase the full version key and upgrade to DOA5U in one go. A full version key will be available to these players for free download in order to enable to trophy unlock feature.

Fighting with players from DOA5 and DOA5+
Because of the introduction of new moves such as Power Launcher and adjustments to online play,
players using Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate users and Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters version users will not be able to play with users from other DOA5 games.

Did you enjoy this?

Individual costumes don’t seem to be available yet for a lot of costumes, and individual costume prices seem a bit steep for those that are there. £1.60 for a costume or all twelve for £10? That doesn’t seem to make much sense to me.

is this pretty much the same as the dead or alive we got with plus?

It’s a free version of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate with all stages and pretty much all features available with 4 (+2) playable characters.

This game is fantastic, and this is the best ‘free version’ of a fighter I’ve ever seen – miles better than the way Tekken Revolution did it.

You don’t have to pay for ‘tokens’ to fight, you don’t have to wait hours after fighting too much – it’s simply the entire full game with the story mode removed, and only 6 usable characters. (6 is plenty to start with, especially when you get the amazing Ayane.)

Think of it as the most feature packed demo you could ever want.

All I’d say though is that if you do like the game, buy the full version (DoA5 Ultimate) rather than buying separate characters for the free version – it ends up cheaper and you can play through the fun story mode as well.

And don’t listen to those who say the game is all about ogling the female characters – it’s a well-balanced and very fun fighting game that’s tuned for beginning level players (ie: most of us).

hm, may give it a go but I tired of Dead or Alive 5 quickly that I got free on Plus. The fighting mechanics have always been decent but I’ve never warmed to any of the characters and that’s made me get bored of it. They just seem a bit bland to me and adding the even more bland Virtua Fighters (some of which were originally just copies of Street Fighter II characters with all the personality removed) just doesn’t do much to help that. The picture up there of five of them for example, they barely have much in the way of expression.

At least this ‘free to play’ is a lot better than Namco’s godawful attempts at that sorta thing.

    Chin Soon Sun 25 September, 2013 @ 8:10 pm

Europe is getting it, there’s some problem during the submission on metadata we’re now resolving it with SCEE.

Hi! What about new characters? Are you going to add them later and if so, when will it be?
I trained a lot with Lisa so that’s what I would like to know.
Thanks in advance for answering.

Hi. I saw a bundle version of Doa5U on sale which is 6.3GB large. I wonder what it contains, and difference between this and the unlocked version (what I can see is only different prices).
Thanks!

Russian fighters awaits DOA5U and core fighters. When will release DOA5U in Russian PSN? Will be sold DOA5U in Russia at disks or psn?

Hi, the game is for me the best fighting game in 3d. So can we hope see a tournament online for EU players with presents for the finalists like the last year?

So me who spend lot of hours per/day (4h minimal) i went to say you the balancing between the characters is well without Rachel and Leon who are realy too strong. They have a risk/reward all time in their favor and it’s hugly again the characters who are ligthweight.
I hope see a patch for DOA5U out this winter with the out of DOA5UA for you in Japon.

Too if you can give a clue about the new character for DOA5UA it will be awesome :)

Own the regular disc edition already; might try this as its free though. Why there is no option to upgrade the regular edition? The disc could still be required in the drive?

KenMarinaris 26 September, 2013 @ 6:22 pm   11

I would love to have an option to upgrade from regular disc version of DOA5 to DOA5U.

Is the Core Fighters available yet? In my store I can only see Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Bundle, which is a paid version. The Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate doesn’t have a download option. I an from Bulgaria. I also noticed that some dlc appears via search but not under the game itself. Some info would be highly appreciated if anyone has information xD. Not planning on buying the whole game as I have a collectors edition of the vanila, but core fighters + some dlc characters and costumes sound like a plan to me

So there’s no trophies in Core Fighters!? Sorry but this is a bit lame. Tekken revolution does have trophies.

Whats the difference between DOA5 Ultimate and Core fighters?

MrBritian 9 October, 2013 @ 10:18 pm   17

Hi Chin,

Can we have an update on the costume pack that has a metadata issues please ?

Still not dropped for the UK playstation store but the new content today has.

Thank you.

As much as I like DOA5, why DOA5U is not on sale in Scandinavia?

hi i was woundering how come i cant download the upgrade key to earn trophies because i have bought everything for game and it keep saying that it can’t be downloaded at this time

Same Problem here. Sorry but this product can’t be downloaded at this time. What else do I have to dl besides the 2 music packs, the story mode and the all character pack?

Upgrading regular DOA5 to DOA5U would be great. Super Street fighter 4 had Arcade edition upgrade as a dlc. Why would’t Tecmo Koei do the same to DOA5?
