Killzone Shadow Fall – your questions answered

As Killzone Shadow Fall gears up for PS4′s 29th November launch in Europe, we caught up with Game Director Steven Ter Heide to get answers to your burning questions across single-player and multiplayer.

We reveal new details on co-op, dedicated servers, weapons, DualShock 4, and much more. Enjoy!

@ShawnMacLean: Is Killzone Shadow Fall a good entry point to the Killzone franchise? (source)
Steven Ter Heide: Absolutely! In many ways, Killzone Shadow Fall is a fresh start for the franchise — the game takes place some thirty years after the original Killzone trilogy, so most of the characters and story arcs from those games have passed into history. And while die-hard fans will appreciate the nods to earlier Killzone titles, no knowledge of the Killzone universe is required to get into the story.

@nick_serio: How long is the campaign? (‏source)
STH: Killzone Shadow Fall’s campaign should last well over 10 hours for most gamers.

@DGuetta52: Will Killzone’s campaign be co-op? (source)
STH: No, the campaign will not have a co-op mode. However, we’re planning to release a separate Online Co-op Expansion Pack after launch; it will add a new wave-based game mode, in which up to four players take on hordes of enemies in special arena maps. For more information about the Online Co-Op Expansion Pack, please refer to our Season Pass announcement.

@LB_Ed: Any plans for split screen support? Playing a game has always been more fun locally then online. (source)
STH: We currently have no plans for split-screen support.

@Mr_Tom_B: Will Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer run on dedicated servers, or peer to peer? Will there be peer-to-peer hosting at all? (source)
STH: We are running with dedicated servers to handle the transfer of data between clients.

@IronSir: How will the level system in multiplayer work? (source)
STH: We have a Challenge-based system, where completing one of the 1,500 Challenges will increase your rank by one. We will continue to add new Challenges after launch.

@MrFredchr: Why did you choose to remove XP and levels? (source)
STH: Levels are part of the game, as completing one of the 1,500 Challenges increases your rank. However, we felt XP was less about skill and more about time, so we designed a new system with a greater emphasis on skill.

@Fishrock123: Any news of vehicles in the multiplayer? (source)
STH: Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer will not have any vehicles (such as Exoskeletons or Jetpacks) at launch. We wanted to ensure that player-created, custom Warzones work on all multiplayer maps, and the inclusion of vehicles would have introduced too many new variables and exceptions to guarantee this.

@BucktownzFinest: Since there are Warzones to join, does that mean there’s no standard matchmaking? (‏source)
STH: Not sure what you mean by standard matchmaking, but when you select a Warzone, the game will then look for a suitable match to join.

@WilliamPeter417: How many weapons are available for customization for multiplayer mode? (‏source)
STH: Killzone Shadow Fall will have 22 weapons at launch, and pretty much all of them can be enhanced with various attachments.

@HamseD: Since all the weapons are unlocked, what about the attachments? (source)
STH: Attachments are not unlocked by default – you can unlock them by completing Challenges.

@TheWroster: ‏How will the DS4 touchpad work in this game? (source)STH: For singleplayer we are using the touchpad to select the mode the OWL is in. It can be set into four different modes with quick swipes on the touchpad. For multiplayer, we use it to bring up menus.

@double_T_azn: Will there be more hand-to-hand takedowns than what we’ve seen in previous trailers? (source)
STH: We have a variety of melee moves, including combo kills where you take down two enemies in quick succession, or a dropdown melee. The dropdown is also available in multiplayer.

@double_T_azn: Will there be bonuses for transferring PS Vita saves for Killzone: Mercenary onto the PS4? (source)
STH: No, we have no plans for connectivity between Killzone: Mercenary and Killzone Shadow Fall.

@nurseman22: My question is: where have you been all my life? (source)
STH: Right here in the studio, working hard on Killzone Shadow Fall!

Did you enjoy this?

Looks great, it will be interesting to see how the KZ MP compares to the like of BF and COD (my main staples for online shooters)…

I’m also keen to see if the rain effects have been improved on the final build-from the last vids I saw they were poor and really let the rest of the game down.

When can we preorder the game on PSN!!!

Zelda on PS4 confirmed. Please refer to screenshot #6 :P

I didn’t like this -no standard matchmaking- thing. I wouldnt want to mess up with tons of options while looking for a game.

Also i wonder if matches will turn to circus with players who Are trying to make those challenges instead of playing the game normally.

1999 Medal of Honor PS1. 14″ CRT, 2 Player split screen.

2002 Time Splitters 2 PS2. 28″ CRT, 4 player split screen.

2007 PS3. Great big 37″ high-def TV. No split screen. :(

Oh well. Deeply excited for my PS4 mega bundle. Wasn’t really *into* Killzone till Mercenary, but now I cannot wait to try Shadowfall.

What about KZ 2 rewards after collect Vektan $ and destroy Helghast icons? KZ2 web site does not allow to download it so will be nice if Guerrilla post it, like they do with KZ Liberation DLC and reward content.

I have a question : Gyroscopic aiming on PS Vita (on Uncharted & Killzone) is great ! Can we expect an option to enable it on Killzone Shadow Fall ?

This is the best aiming system ever on console !!! And the best use of the gyro so far. :D

@VictorAnthology I recommend KZ 2 and 3 if you are getting on with Mercenary. KZ1 is awful :(

@Alex-1124 HA, I lol’d. I would love for Nintendo to do just that but they are convinced the WII U is great. :/

After the amazing killzone on the vita this is a letdown as it only has a maximum of 16 players online. That’s not next Gen at all.

This is the only game I’m getting at launch so I have high expectations for it especially after playing the amazing Killzone Mercenary.
I like the no xp vs skill system too! A refreshing change!

As the Move controller is said to be supported on the PS4, will the existing Sharpshooter peripheral be compatible with Killzone Shadow Fall, as it was with Killzone 3?

*fingers crossed*

I must say, I also have some concerns about multiplayer turning into a circus, where players just try to complete the various challenges, instead of just playing the game.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

@JDSpiers Try 24 players and each with their own Drone/Owl flying around the map too. Where did you get 16 from? Of course 16 isn’t next gen. Resistance 1 had 40 players and Resistance 2 had 60 players, MAG had 256 players. That must mean BF4 with its petty 64 players is awful to you then?

Steven also send a tweet this morning that the game went Gold!

I did hope for some story split screen like Killzone 3. But I still think it’ll be a fantastic game.
By the way, can you confirm that the game uses most of the 50gb on the Blu-ray?

Split screen support and Move support would be great, please patch it in. The bundle has an extra controller and camera, it would be perfect!

Nelsonslb1991 21 October, 2013 @ 8:47 pm   17

looks good, but with nextgen consoles i was expecting killzone multiplayer to be something like battlefield 2142, that would be amazing. infantry fps multiplayer games are getting boring.

Delboi173 21 October, 2013 @ 9:24 pm   18

Friends list dissapeared anyone?

How much of the game do you play alone. I really liked the “team-feel” of the singleplayer of the previous games.

No 3d stereoscopic?

IllustratedDEO 21 October, 2013 @ 11:02 pm   21

All I need to know is if the multiplayer map of Killzone 1 “Park Terminal” will ever return as future DLC ?

Awww no COOP for the story? Booo!

Coody-Baroody 22 October, 2013 @ 2:50 am   23

Answer us please GUERILLA? Stereoscopic 3D? And if not WHY not?

VictorAnalogy 22 October, 2013 @ 10:16 am   24

@link1983 Played KZ3. It was ok, but didn’t set my world on fire. However, now I’m more invested in that universe might give it another go.

TheJungler 22 October, 2013 @ 10:38 am   25

Good info, but can you please confirm if the EU version contains censored content compared to the US release? It happened with Twisted Metal, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and now Beyond: Two Souls (and all of those are SCE published, first party games – like Killzone)

No problem if not I understand sometimes it’s out of your hands, but if I know in advance I can import the full, untouched version as PS3 is region free!

Thanks

TheJungler 22 October, 2013 @ 12:52 pm   26

I meant PS4 of course :S

EternalChaos72 22 October, 2013 @ 4:48 pm   27

Can we please get KSF PSN avatars for the EU store please?
