Pure Chess comes to PS4 this week

Get to grips with the strategy classic from Wednesday

You can literally smell the excitement here at VooFoo towers and it’s not (only) due to the lack of personal hygiene time we’ve had of late! We’ve teamed up with publisher Ripstone to bring you our latest, greatest version of Pure Chess which hits PS4 this week and we’re extremely proud of our new baby.

If you don’t know who we are, VooFoo Studios is a small team of passionate developers based in sunny Birmingham right in the heart of England. We’ve always prided ourselves on making highly playable, photo-realistic games and thanks to the power of the PS4 hardware, we’ve been able to turn the dial up to 11!

PS4_002

Displayed at 1080p and running at a silky-smooth 60 frames per seconds, Pure Chess on PlayStation 4 is a visual tour-de-force. We’ve doubled the texture sizes, added many extra layers of post-processing, added contact shadows, and applied ultra-realistic depth-of-field… which is a rather boring way of saying that this is a seriously good looking chess game! Couple this with a massively improved custom networking system to provide a much slicker on-line experience and we’re confident you’ll love Pure Chess just as much as we do.

The game is available on 16th April priced at £4.99/€ 5.99 but you can also get your hands on the best value Complete Bundle for £9.99/€11.99 which includes all the DLC. PlayStation Plus users can look forward to some cheeky discounts at launch too!

Both us and Ripstone will be doing some code giveaways on our social media channels so get following us:

Ah I love Chess. Would I be able to play multiple games at once?

DavidHolliss 14 April, 2014 @ 2:18 pm   3

This does look great, can you give us more info on the single player and multiplayer game modes.
Also how many sets of pieces are in the standard game and how many more we get for the extra £5.00.
Thanks.

This looks really good!
I wish someone would make a Star Wars Chess with animated pieces!

    ScooterMix 14 April, 2014 @ 3:56 pm

i really think should do star wars chess and batman chess and simspons chess because doing plain chess boreing.

Purchased both PS3 and PSV version……but are you kidding with PS4? Why is there still no real-time player-to-player multiplayer?

Couple this with a massively improved custom networking system to provide a much slicker on-line experience and we’re confident you’ll love Pure Chess just as much as we do.

Doesn’t that mean it has multiplayer online?

Looking forward to this on my PS4. Have the Vita version, but the big screen HD version is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

ScooterMix 14 April, 2014 @ 3:55 pm   7

Its same game on ps3 so really people who own game should get free on ps4 as cross play.

ScooterMix 14 April, 2014 @ 4:06 pm   8

well heard know usa getting more free games for april more than us so again euope get left out.

MaxDiehard 14 April, 2014 @ 4:22 pm   9

While I love this game, there is no way in hell I’m purchasing a third time. This should have at least been Cross-buy.

“massively improved custom networking system” aka “We ignored all demands and still don’t provide live multiplayer chess.”

Combining that with a weak AI and the lack of cross-buy, results in a triple nope to buy this game once more.

MaxDiehard 14 April, 2014 @ 4:34 pm   11

I’m totally with you there. While I loved this at first, the vs mode is just so primitive. And lack of cross-buy has put me right off now.

buraspo 14 April, 2014 @ 4:42 pm   12

Great news, I didn’t play it for quite a while so ,Seems like, now I will :)

Shin-Ra 14 April, 2014 @ 5:39 pm   13

The framerate was a little dodgy in the Backgammon Blitz demo, glad this is 60fps.

Leicesterfan 14 April, 2014 @ 5:49 pm   14

Ridiculous that there is STILL no online multiplayer. Made a mistake buying the PS3 version – won’t do so again!

    it says

Doesn’t that mean it has multiplayer online?

No Skeetys, it means that they just modified their exisiting “Play by PSN-Private Message” system. You can play online, but you can’t play live. And that’s what everyone expects and demanded since day 1.

Looks as if it’s a pretty looking (graphics wise) game. Shame I suck at chess, otherwise I’d buy it! ;)

BATTLE

CHESS

Get on it sony!

NoobBlast 15 April, 2014 @ 12:08 pm   17

Is there any news about why Sony don’t allow cross-platform play?

Pure Chess have cross-platform support, but Sony sadly don’t like cross platform play according to the developer
This is the reason why i never bought Pure Chess on any Sony System due to its limitations.

Pure Chess already have cross-play between these systems, and it sucks that PS3, PS4 and VITA can’t join in.

Just wondering why the price in store is higher than what u type on this article?

In PSN SCEE:
Pure Chess
Price: £6.79/€7.99/$11.55

Pure Chess Complete Bundle
Price: £10.25/€11.99/$17.25

Above u type :
The game is available on 16th April priced at £4.99/€ 5.99 but you can also get your hands on the best value Complete Bundle for £9.99/€11.99

So … somethings not right.

I also tweeted u about it .. still waiting for a reply there :)

Ok this is def a 5/5 game, but there a lot of issues. First of all while playing mulitplayer you could only play six games, and you have to wait on your opponents move. Everyone suddenly stops playing when there going lose which is lame. you can’t continue online play cause there’s only six slots, and everyone refuses to move. At least put a reasonable time frame or allow me to customize online play. So i could search for specific games if I wanted to play speed or normal pace.

Local play has all those configurations so it works well. Online play is very slow, talking about days slow not hours. I’ve been waiting for players to lose and they refuse to move to keep rating up. I’ve emailed the company no response. Any suggestions ? 3/5 game at this point. If online was fixed def 5/5.

Ps…..music is phenomenal in the game. Brilliant idea, the only issue is mulitplayer. There’s gotta be some way to force players to move. One player hasn’t moved in 36 hours. On top of that image 6 slots doing that. Annoying.

Still looking for some clarification on the price. Clearly says above “The game is available on 16th April priced at £4.99″. Obviously not as it is £6.79 on the store. Which I think is a bit pricey for what is still a chess game regardless of been higher graphics.

Also this game would be as a cross-buy, or even a bundle deal for all 3 consoles. Eg £9.99 for all 3 base games. £15 for everything on all 3.

If pricing states £9.99 on this official website but store charges £10.25, then we should legally be charged the lower price as described, although it was stated before launch, Sony should include a disclaim stating pricing may vary but have not. I am disappointed with this game as I can not use the online portion of the game, always receiving error can not connect to server try again later. Needs to be addressed if there are issues with it. Therefore the game should be charged half price if Sony doesn’t decide to rectify this. What do you, the fellow gamers/community think?
