While we shake the jetlag out of our heads following last week’s salvo of PlayStation news and announcements (£349!), today we’re bubbling up some of our favourite new game trailers from E3 2013. My favourite? A toss-up between The Order: 1886, Transistor and that Octodad madness. Grab some popcorn, check out the clips below and let us know your pick.

Hands-on Impressions: DUALSHOCK 4

Countries: , , , ,

PlayStation 4

Following its debut at PlayStation’s February 20th event in New York City, DUALSHOCK 4 has emerged at E3 in near-final form. Though DUALSHOCK 3 has proven to be a capable and dependable wireless controller for years with PlayStation 3, the PS4′s new weapon of choice is clearly an improvement across the board. Here are some quick impressions.

For me, DUALSHOCK 4′s most impactful new feature is a subtle but shockingly satisfying detail: A glossy cross-hatched texture that wraps around the larger handles. This texture is a delight because it provides a snug, more comfortable grip on the device compared to DUALSHOCK 3′s slippier feel. This is one of those things you’ll need to try for yourself to truly understand, but once you experience it there’s no going back. It’s a delight.

Then there are the redesigned and retuned analog sticks, which now boast a concave surface and slightly stiffer deadzone that makes it easier to maneuver the camera using small, precise movements. The surface is also more tactile, but not so much that it impedes your thumb’s ability to glide around the inner rim as your make subtle adjustments to your aiming reticule in shooters like Blacklight: Retribution. Much like DUALSHOCK 4′s new textured grips, the revamped analog sticks are a clear improvement to the classic design sported by DUALSHOCK 2 and DUALSHOCK 3. It’s no contest.

E3 2013 comes to a close – what were your highlights?

Countries: , , , ,

That’s about it folks. As your SCEE team pack their bags and head to LAX for the flight home following a furiously busy week here at E3, we thought we’d leave you with this sizzle reel, showcasing some of the most memorable moments from this year’s show.

I really hope you enjoyed our coverage this week, and discovered plenty of new titles to get excited about. Please do jump into the comments below and let us know your personal highlights of this year’s event.

Me? Well, for my money, the games industry really brought its A game this year. Aside from our first glimpse at the devilishly handsome PlayStation 4 console, my top picks were Media Molecule’s impossibly charming PS Vita adventure Tearaway; Jonathan Blow’s extraordinary PS4 puzzler The Witness; Ready At Dawn’s scintillating reveal for The Order: 1886; and Transistor, Supergiant Games‘ bewitching Bastion follow-up.
double bill? Gamers have got a hell of a year ahead of them.

Sidescrolling skate ‘em up OlliOlli debuts new footage at E3

OlliOlli Logo

Hello! I’m John, the game designer at Roll7. You may have seen a few snippets about OlliOlli already but as we approach E3 we wanted to go into a bit more depth about the game and let you know where the idea came from.

So, I’ve had a skateboard since I was about five. In my teens I actually got quite good and was sponsored for a while by Route One. Even now I still like to do the odd kickflip or whatnot (although breaking an arm is much more of a worry than when I was a kid).

I’ve played and loved all the skateboarding games from 720 and California Games to the more recent Tony Hawk and Skate games, but for me there was always something missing in the newer titles that meant it wasn’t quite the same as real skateboarding…. Skateboarding is hard.
