E3 2013 comes to a close – what were your highlights?

Countries: , , , ,

That’s about it folks. As your SCEE team pack their bags and head to LAX for the flight home following a furiously busy week here at E3, we thought we’d leave you with this sizzle reel, showcasing some of the most memorable moments from this year’s show.

I really hope you enjoyed our coverage this week, and discovered plenty of new titles to get excited about. Please do jump into the comments below and let us know your personal highlights of this year’s event.

Me? Well, for my money, the games industry really brought its A game this year. Aside from our first glimpse at the devilishly handsome PlayStation 4 console, my top picks were Media Molecule’s impossibly charming PS Vita adventure Tearaway; Jonathan Blow’s extraordinary PS4 puzzler The Witness; Ready At Dawn’s scintillating reveal for The Order: 1886; and Transistor, Supergiant Games‘ bewitching Bastion follow-up.
double bill? Gamers have got a hell of a year ahead of them.

Sidescrolling skate ‘em up OlliOlli debuts new footage at E3

Hello! I’m John, the game designer at Roll7. You may have seen a few snippets about OlliOlli already but as we approach E3 we wanted to go into a bit more depth about the game and let you know where the idea came from.

So, I’ve had a skateboard since I was about five. In my teens I actually got quite good and was sponsored for a while by Route One. Even now I still like to do the odd kickflip or whatnot (although breaking an arm is much more of a worry than when I was a kid).

I’ve played and loved all the skateboarding games from 720 and California Games to the more recent Tony Hawk and Skate games, but for me there was always something missing in the newer titles that meant it wasn’t quite the same as real skateboarding…. Skateboarding is hard.

Dragon Fantasy Book II comes to E3!

Since we announced Dragon Fantasy Book II on the US PlayStation Blog in August we’ve had a very, very busy year. Our little 16-bit RPG that could has grown into quite a beefy project!

Most of the game is now complete, with big chunks of the game tuned and fully playable. We’ve got some big ol’ bosses in there ready to stomp on people. We’ve beefed the engine up quite a bit from the SNES-like roots we were originally targeting, using way more layers, sprites, and rotation and scaling effects than that console was ever capable of. We’ve travelled to two PAXes and a GDC, showing the game to everyone we could – and losing our voices several times in the process.

E3 2013: Day 3 round-up

E3 day 3 lead image

The crowds at E3 2013 might have waned a little bit on the show’s third and final day, but there was still a huge amount of great stuff to see out there. We kicked things off today by catching up with Guerrilla Games‘ Managing Director Hermen Hulst and Game Director Steven Ter Heide for a closer look at Killzone: Shadow Fall in action.

First things first, it can’t be overstated just how beautiful this game is. The original trilogy’s murky hues and thick shadows have been traded in for rich blue skies, striking silver skyscrapers and lush green geography. The level of detail in the environments is extraordinary – brooks babble over your feet, blistering sunlight glistens and flares off the cityscape and draw distances stretch out over the horizon. It’s a complete visual re-invention for the series, and Shadow Fall wears its new threads very well indeed.

The gameplay has undergone something of a revamp too. It’s still unmistakeably Killzone but there a fresh feeling to what’s on offer here. Aside from more expansive areas to play around in and open-ended level structure, the biggest addition is a companion drone (dubbed OWL) that you can use to distract the enemy, plant zip lines or lay down supressing fire. It opens up some interesting new options – not least of all a greater stealth element.

More characters join the Divekick roster

Countries: , , , ,

Divekick’s roster continues to grow, and each new challenger is even more insane than the last. Of course, we recommend that you learn how to play using one of the original eight characters, but don’t let that stop you from trying out some of these advanced fighters.
