Digital Comics Store Update (15th December 2010)

Countries: , , , ,

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…Jack Frost nipping at your nose…etc., etc. Yes, it’s (almost) that time of year again, and to celebrate we have some festive treats guaranteed to bring a smile to your PSP‘s (or PSPgo‘s) big shiny face.

Digital Comics Store Update (15th December 2010)

First up is our Festive Fifty celebration, which you may have already seen. During the year, the Digital Comics catalogue has grown to epic proportions: it now boasts over 2,700 titles, from 20 different publishers, with 23 great value bundles, and almost 50 FREE comics. To help you pick the best, most popular comics, we’ve listed our top 25 best sellers of the year, featuring blockbuster names like Marvel’s Civil War series, Hulk, God of War and Spidey. We also wanted to highlight our own personal favourites and some recent releases too. Our list of 25 “Boredom Busters” contains such classics as Deadpool, Gaiman’s epic Sandman, and the soon-to-be-everywhere Locke & Key, along with some cult classics deserving of your attention. Check out the full lists here.

Let’s see what’s new in the Digital Comics store this week.

  • Insomnia’s Cancertown was one of the highlights of our early offerings – a great series which steadily grew a loyal cult following during its time on the store. Now, writer Cy Dethan is back with the superlative The Indifference Engine through Markosia.
  • Every great action hero got started somewhere: Batman Began. Bond had his Casino Royale. And for John McClane, more than a decade before the first Die Hard movie, he’s just another rookie cop. BOOM! Studios present Die Hard: Year One – 8 issues are now available to read. Yippee Ki Yay!
  • Not one but two of DC’s Ex-Machina specials are released today. At long last, the origin of Jack Pherson, the Great Machine’s mysterious archenemy, is finally revealed in this perfect introduction for readers new to the world of Ex Machina.
  • Witness the birth of The Four – Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, Susan Storm & Ben Grim – with the start of Marvel’s 2003 epic Ultimate Fantastic Four. Not to be outdone, the Marvel dream team of Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch unleash the red-hot 2002 series of The Ultimates this week.

Digital Comics Store Update (8th December 2010)

Hello everyone, hope you are not too snowed in wherever you are. We have no less than 50 comics to warm your mitts this week.

Before I get to our usual highlights, I’m pleased to present an exclusive and very topical extra we put together for you. A best seller since its release on the store a couple of weeks ago, DC’s World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen has been something of a godsend to the hoardes of WoW fans eager to discover more about Cataclysm’s new playable race. We spoke exclusively to writers Micky Neilson and James Waugh and artists Ludo Lullabi and Tony Washington to get the lowdown on the mini-series and its characters, the challenges they faced in capturing Azeroth’s narrative and visual style, and their comic industry influences – check out exclusive Q&A here.

In the Marvel corner, the first four issues of NYX (2003). Meet some very special homeless teenage mutants in New York City: time-freezing Kiden, shape-shifting Tatiana, body-shifting Bobby, his mysterious brother Lil Bro, the female-Wolverine X-23 (in her first comic appearance!) and Cameron, a woman with no powers. Marvel’s own Joe Quesada and superstar-in-waiting Josh Middleton bring the world of the X-Men to the streets, and the struggle for survival has never been more uncertain…

Survival is also an issue in BOOM! Studios’ Dead Run. The end isn’t near… it’s here. America has become a wasteland, leaving the few cities that remain transformed into impenetrable fortresses. Only the very brave or the very foolish voluntarily step foot outside the protective confines of the mega-cities, and Nick Masters is a bit of both. His trade keeps him alive but what happens when he fails a local crime lord?… Find out here.

For those who can’t resist a bit of heroic fantasy, issue #1 of IDW’s Dungeons & Dragons is here! Writer John Rogers (Blue Beetle) and artist Andrea Di Vito (Annihilation) bring us a tale of high adventure and deep secrets set in the D&D world we know and love. Read more on this series from the IDW editors here.

And now for something completely different: Cartoon Books bring us Jeff Smith’s RASL, mixing sci-fi, noir, Native American culture and hardboiled crime in high-contract black & white glory. If you are already a follower issue #8 is out today, but if you want to try this truly unique series the easy way we also have two bundles bringing issues #1-4 and #5-8 at a discount. No excuses!

Digital Comics Store Update (17th November 2010)

Hi everyone, as we approach our first anniversary the team are busy preparing something special for you all. So it is left to me to tell you about today’s releases.

For WoW fans we have World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen #1. A series of grisly, animalistic murders have rocked the walled town of Gilneas. A famous detective sets out to discover the perpetrators and finds far more than he bargained for. To find the truth, he must delve through years of twisted history – both the history of his family and Gilneas itself. This pivotal 5-issue miniseries explores the in-depth lore of the Worgen!

Artist Ludo Lullabi tells us more in this exclusive creator Q&A:

- The artwork evokes the atmosphere of Azeroth perfectly. How challenging was it to capture this world in the format of a comic book?

Before working on the World of Warcraft comics series, I was a regular player and knew the general atmosphere of the game. The adaptation of my art to the comics came naturally… When i wasn’t sure of something, I went into the game on my tiger mount to study the places in which the story took place!

- How much WORLD OF WARCRAFT do you play?

I played World of Warcraft very regularly when the game came out, as well as Burning Crusade. Due to a lack of time because of my work and also the fact that I want to discover all other games out there, I play less and less. I have not investigated everything in Wrath of the Lich King yet. My avatar is still lvl 78, though…

- Who are your favourite comic creators?

I am influenced by many creators but to quote only some of them: Joe Madureira, Humberto Ramos, Katsuhiro Otomo.

- Name some of your favourite comic book characters, and artistic influences.

The comic books which most influenced me are “Akira” by Otomo and “Battle Chasers” by Joe Mad.

Elsewhere, Markosia bring us Turkey Grove Farms. Something has gone very wrong on the farm, tired of ending up on people’s plates the turkeys revolt and force the farm hands to provide them with a certain turkey substitute. A dark, adult but most of all, funny comic that you should be sure to pick up. Just look out for the over amorous bull.

IDW deliver the next instalment of a personal favourite, Locke and Key: Keys to the Kingdom. In case you didn’t know Stephen Spielberg is producing a Locke & Key TV series, so why not read the comics before everyone jumps on the band wagon!

Born in fire. Raised by monsters. Destined to destroy. On an alien planet shattered by war, no one is stronger than Skaar, the savage Son of Hulk. Marvel release the first two issues today.

That’s it from me. Check out the list below for all the new releases, or check out our website to browse the entire catalogue and to take part in the forums.
