Hi, this is Skander Djerbi, I’m the executive producer of Fuel Overdose. In case this is the first time you’ve heard about our game, let me describe it briefly.

Created by just two hard-working developers, Fuel Overdose is an indie combat racer for PS3 that brings a new approach to the genre with tons of innovative game mechanics such as the grappling hooks and the super/ultra furies. What’s so special about Fuel Overdose is that it also puts the focus on the strategy. The game is definitely not only about driving and shooting, and constantly challenges your decision-making skills before and during the races.

Fuel Overdose tactical 3

Hi, I’m Skander Djerbi executive producer of Fuel Overdose which arrives on PSN today. With this post, I wanted to explain why and how we brought some strategy to our combat racing experience.

When you think of combat racing games of the past 25 years, you realise that they more or less follow the same pattern: you collect an item and then you use it before collecting another one, and so on. These games ask you to focus on speed and targeting but they don’t really challenge your mental skills. Generally, the only decisions you have to take are “Should I use my missile now or later?” or “Should I take that risky shortcut?”.

One of our ambitions with Fuel Overdose was to propose a more complex game experience by giving each player the possibility to build his own race strategy and reward his decision-making skills.

Hi PlayStation Blog, this is Skander Djerbi, executive producer of the half-Japanese, half-gaijin indie production Fuel Overdose for PlayStation 3 on PSN. The game launches on 21st December, and a demo is available right now.

Our previous post focused on the racing gameplay pillar. Today we will talk about the ‘action’ aspect of the game, introducing all the cool gameplay mechanics that you can use against your opponents to attack, defend and counter-attack. Have a look in the new trailer below.

Fuel Overdose Gameplay Showcased In New Trailer

In 2010 we started the development of Fuel Overdose with the ambition of offering a new kind of solo and multiplayer action racing experience by bringing a more varied, strategic approach to combat gameplay. That’s why we like to think of Fuel Overdose as a ‘tactical action racing’ game. Today, with the first official trailer, we’re happy to introduce the central racing component of the game.

Immediate fun vs. depth of gameplay

When we decided to go for a top-down/isometric camera system, we pulled our old consoles out of the closet to try to recapture the spirit of the classic games. We immediately remembered that what we loved about them is the balance between the immediate fun they deliver and the depth of their gameplay. With Fuel Overdose, we wanted to deliver a game that was neither entirely arcade-orientated nor a pure simulation, but a perfect mixture of both approaches.

Fuel Overdose (Tactical-Action-Racing) Coming To PSN

My name is Skander Djerbi, I’m a member of I-Friqiya, a tiny indie team located in Tokyo and in charge of Fuel Overdose. In our team there is Ryo our graphic designer, Jérôme our game designer/level designer/programmer, Hideyuki our character designer while Aroun and I are the producers of the game.

To cut a long story short, we used to work for big publishers and we decided to venture into indie game development in 2010 because we thought we could bring something new to the table; what we are bringing you is Fuel Overdose.

Our ambition with this game is to bring back retro, top-down combat racing, but with a twist; that’s why we like to think of our project as a “Tactical Action-Racing” game.
