Tomorrow, there will be a special PlayStation Store update, which will usher in a new era of videogames where you can truly feel part of the action. By downloading the 3D Collection you can play WipEout HD, SuperStardust HD, PAIN and a MotorStorm Pacific Rift demo in amazing stereoscopic 3D.

You can download all four for the bargain price of €29.99 or pick them up for free when you buy a Sony Bravia 3D TV package. Of course, if you already own WipEout HD, SuperStardust HD or PAIN, there will be a free software update, so that you can play them in 3D

Here are a few words from Simon Benson, Senior Development Manager at Evolution Studios, on how stereoscopic 3D works and what it brings to videogames:

PlayStation 3 now supports Stereoscopic 3D, allowing games with 3D features to output two High Definition images at 60Hz when you connect your PS3 to a 3D TV.

As human beings, we see a slightly different view of the world from each of our eyes, and our brains analyse the differences to work out important cues – this is referred to as stereoscopic 3D. As humans, we evolved this ability due to naturally being predators, allowing us to hunt prey far more effectively, judging more accurately how far away things are and how fast they are moving.

We have taken this idea, so that you can now experience these same advantages in any PlayStation 3 game that supports Stereoscopic 3D features.

As you can see, stereoscopic 3D is not just a novelty; it is something that really makes a difference, particularly to games, and can even give you a competitive edge. Imaging playing a racing game such as MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and being able to judge when to break to avoid collisions, just like you can in a real car.

Many sports games are also perfect for Stereoscopic 3D. After all, how many sports can you play in the real world without 3D vision? Try closing one eye and hitting a ball… good luck! In a nutshell, stereoscopic 3D lets you look at games in the same way as you do the real world, taking them one step closer to reality.

Stereoscopic 3D is also the perfect partner to our new PlayStation Move motion controller. Imagine being able to interact with a game using a 3D controller whilst also viewing it in Stereoscopic 3D, effectively reaching into the screen. This is possibly the biggest gaming revolution in many years.

Stay tuned for more news and features on 3D gaming very soon.

Hi Guys,

I’m Joey and I’m the SCEE Product Manager for PAIN.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I wanted to let you all know ahead of time that we are experiencing some difficulties with PAIN on Blu-ray.

This is a server related matter which we are aware of, and we’re developing a patch to fix this as soon as possible.

The problems you may be experiencing include:

An inability to play online games.

Software locks when playing online games.

The inability to purchase or use additional content acquired via the PlayStation Store.

PSN online players may also experience game locks and hangs in online play. This will be addressed once the PAIN Blu-ray patch is applied to the game.

We’re currently planning to release a product patch within the next 10 working days, and we endeavour to keep the community updated with any changes to these plans.

But keep on flinging your chosen victim and bring on the PAIN!

Joey

Hi guys. I’m Joey, the SCEE Product Manager for PAIN . I’m really excited to tell you that we’ll be releasing all the best and most painful bits of PAIN PS3 on Blu-ray disc next week.

Every environment, such as Downtown, Movie Studios, Abusement Park and Sore Spots, will be included so you can fling your chosen victim into Tanks, Cannons or even exploding teddy bears for massive combo scores by creating as much PAIN as possible.

Speaking of victims: Jarvis, Tati, Ginger and Cookie will be there, and keep a look out for the Ded Baron as you play through PAIN Darts, Mime Toss, Fortress, Spank the Monkey (Those damn, dirty apes!) and the other crazy game modes.

We’re also adding in the great PAIN labs, where new developer-created, beta-style levels will be made available for free from Idol Minds on a weekly basis.

PAIN PS3 will be out on Wednesday 24 June in Europe, 25 June in Australia and New Zealand, and the UK and Ireland on Friday 26 June for €24.99/£19.99. More pictures of the levels and characters are in our Flickr account.

Thanks,

Joey

Travis Williams from SCEA knows all about PAIN: not only does he have sore feet after spending a week at E3, but he’s also the senior producer for PAIN and the best person we know to tell us all about the latest update to the game, which includes Trophy lists and a brand new game mode.

Over to Travis:

Everyone is back from E3 now and it’s time to get back to work. I for one have a love hate relationship with that show. I LOVE E3. However, I HATE how my feet feel afterwards. Aye Carumba! Did anyone see Modnation Racers?

I told the producer of that game he better come correct. I know where he sits. That game looks AWE-SOME! You think he would let me put some PAIN characters in that game? Ed, Cookie, Jarvis and Tati would be sooo awesome as Mods!

Anyways.. where wuz I?

If you have been keeping up with our PlayStation Network game PAIN lately you would realize we just released SORE SPOTS. This particular release has been good for us in that we really got to address some core improvements to PAIN as a whole as well as create a multiplayer mode filled with player suggestions we have had for a while now.

Some of the improvements to PAIN include:

Revamped Menus
We’ve added so much content that the old menus just were not working for us anymore.

Trophy lists inside modes
Players hated leaving modes to figure out how to get all the trophies. So now you can see those requirements inside the mode you are playing.

PAINalympics!
It’s a good exercise to browse our message boards and pick out some of the wackiest ideas we have gotten from the community. I remember one player wanted a mode where you could see how long you can go without touching the ground. Another player wanted to swing and kick people… I could go on for a while here, but the request list usually starts to disturb me.

One user suggested we make an Olympic mode.. (And everyone else agreed) So this was a good excuse to tie a bunch of insane acts together and compel people to become good at them. PAINalympics is now my go to mode to play with my friends. As a thanks to some of our community helpers we gave them some love in our new video. Enjoy it!

Thanks again everyone for making PAIN such a joy to work on!

Now where is that ModNation E3 version….?
