Weekend Debate: Your favourite multiplayer mode

The Weekend Debate

As some of you might have read this week, I recently sat down for a chat with Jonathan Morin, creative director of upcoming PS3/PS4 open world actioner Watch_Dogs. He had some interesting things to say about the game’s approach to multiplayer – insisting that it will be so seamless that players won’t even know when the game has transitioned out of single-player and into multi.

It’s a bold, exciting claim, and one that I figured served as an interesting jumping-off point for this week’s debate. So, what I want to know:

Weekend Debate: What would you sacrifice in the name of gaming? (update)

The Weekend Debate

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for taking part this week. The following five posters each win a download voucher for Soul Sacrifice: benzopil, ShadowFlex, Siegririth, Zapffe and Gincairn. Congratulations! We’ll deliver your codes via a PM to your IDs on the official forum. Everyone else – better luck next time!

ORIGINAL POST: First things first, apologies for the delay in announcing last week’s winners. Better late than never, here they are: DsonicX, silmorat1, hfred123 and AeonsDead. Congratulations – we’ll be in touch via a PM to your ID on the official forums to arrange delivery of your prizes.

Now, on to this week’s topic. I spent three excruciating hours sat on a broken-down train earlier this week *cue violins* and the only thing that kept me from losing my mind was Soul Sacrifice – legendary designer Keiji Inafune’s hugely enjoyable beast-battling epic for PS Vita. Duly, that’s where today’s debate finds inspiration.

Answer me this: What would you sacrifice for your hobby, and where would you draw the line?

Weekend Debate: Your everyday life as a videogame

Countries: , , , ,

The Weekend Debate

First things first, apologies for the distinct lack of any debating last weekend. Alas, circumstances conspired and it wasn’t possible to get a prize together in time. However, normal service resumes today.

This week’s topic is inspired by the brilliantly bizarre Men’s Room Mayhem, announced for PS Vita earlier this week. In case you missed it, it’s a quick-fire action title that tasks you with managing traffic and enforcing etiquette in a gentleman’s washroom.

Duly, I want to hear your ideas for other games based on the humdrum minutiae of everyday life. A side-scrolling brawler set against the backdrop of your morning commute to work? A match-three puzzle game based on re-arranging your CD collection in alphabetical and/or chronological order? Fire away.

The authors of the four most entertaining responses win themselves the rather incongruous pairing of Twisted Metal for PS3 (signed by co-creator David Jaffe himself) and Little Deviants on PS Vita. Good luck!

Weekend Debate: What makes a great horror game? (update)

The Weekend Debate

UPDATE: As ever, thanks to everyone who took part this week. The following have secured themselves a copy of Killzone HD on Blu-ray: XzSlLENTSNIPERzX, Boogalicious, ITACHI_U________, roolovesrab and TheJungler. Congratulations – we’ll arrange delivery via a PM to your account on the official forums.

ORIGINAL POST: Hands up if you caught the reveal trailer this week for The Evil Within, the new project from Resident Evil creator and all-round survival horror guru Shinji Mikami? If not, do so now (providing you’ve got a strong stomach – it’s quite a sight). There doesn’t appear to be much in the way of gameplay in the clip, but the short video really nails the sense of gruesome dread that the early Silent Hill titles were famous for. (more…)

Weekend Debate: Turn your favourite franchise on its head (update)

The Weekend Debate

UPDATE: As ever, thanks to everyone who took part over the weekend and apologies for the slight delay in announcing this week’s winners. Without further ado, the following posters have secured themselves a Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time download voucher: toxic-inferno, MafiaCub, Sneapy, The_Cannon-MOS and Martin_Silenus. Congratulations – we’ll send the code as a PM to your ID on the official forum.

ORIGINAL POST: So, who caught the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon reveal yesterday? Astonishing stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. It’s great to see an established franchise have the confidence to do something so unusual and unexpected. We’ve seen series take some eccentric turns before – inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood and Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare both spring to mind – but it really seems like Ubisoft are taking it to the next level here.

With that in mind, your debate topic this week: what unexpected twist would you like to see a big game franchise take with a DLC pack or full expansion?

A zombie mode for FIFA? An Uncharted add-on that sees Drake sign up as a Total Wipeout contestant? Mull it over and post your suggestion below.
