An Introduction To Trine: Coming Soon To PSN

Hi everyone,

My name is Olivier; I work for Nobilis, a publishing company which is based in Lyon, France. I’m a Product Manager and I’m here to tell you about an exciting new release for PlayStation Store: Trine. Trine is a fantasy action and platform game that combines 2D gameplay with 3D graphics. The game is balanced between action and puzzle solving sequences. Three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil and the player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle.

Trine, 1

Because physics is at the core of the gameplay there is not just one solution for each puzzle, in fact you can even find a way the developers have never thought of! You can control one of the three characters of the game and switch at any time to solve the puzzles in a different manner. Each character as a unique ability so choose the one you think is best suited for the situation. The Wizard can create and move objects around to build a bridge or crush his enemies with a box. The Thief uses her bow to attack and her grappling hook to move quickly and avoid dangerous traps. The Warrior is better suited for close combat and tends to hit before he thinks! So you can play through the 16 levels of the game switching from character to character but you can also play with one or two friends in a cooperative mode. Play the whole adventure together and find new solutions by combining your characters’ powers.

Trine, 2

How about asking the Wizard to create a box so the Thief can use it with her grappling hook? Or why don’t you make the Wizard levitate you, while you, The Warrior, destroy your enemies that were too high to reach in the first place? With 3 players, the range of options widens : ask the Thief to use her bow to fire at your enemies while the Warrior protects her with his shield and the Wizards creates boxes on top of the skeletons’ heads to crush them ! Possibilities are huge and this trailer will show you what sort of things you can do in Trine.

Coming Soon to the PlayStation Store. For sure…you’ll love it!

Update: Many of you have been asking about the price of Trine and in a few comments below I mentioned that it would be £19.99 / € 19.99 – please note that the price is actually expected to be £16.99 and  €19.99. I’m sorry for any confusion caused.

That looks cool:)

Unholy_Light 09 July, 2009 @ 16:14

There is a demo for PC, so I hope it will be for PS3 too.

I’m looking forward to this, but whether or not I buy it depends on the price. I’d definately download a demo though, if one was released.

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:16

Hi billsmugs,

Trine will be priced at 19.99€, 19.99$ and 19.99£ on the PlayStation Store.

Looks great, I’m hyped for this! Demo or no demo, it’s a buy from me :D

Harlequiine 09 July, 2009 @ 16:18

I’m looking forward to it.
I thought I’d ask before someone else did – can we get an estimated release date? At least a month? Or a season?

Looking forward to it guys :)

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:29

Hi Harlequiine,

The release date of Trine is the end of July so you’ll be able to download it this summer !

How soon is soon ?

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:17

You can expect Trine to hit the PlayStation Store by the end of July ;)

almighty-slayer 09 July, 2009 @ 16:19

Looking awesome, definite buy from me.

I have been really looking forward to this game coming out on the PS3 ever since I saw the first trailer. Looks amazing :)

Is the co-op mode online too, or just local?

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:21

Hello adz2k7,

The co-op mode is only local but 3 players can play on the same machine at the same time. There are no split-screens so it’s very easy and fun to play in this mode !

andypritchard 09 July, 2009 @ 16:21

is it out for this summer

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:22

Yes ! Trine can be expected by the end of July :)

Tried the PC demo for this and thought it was fantastic – really looking forward to it coming to the PSN.

Would love to know the price point for this game though, there were… uhm… ‘fluctuations’ in the price for the PC version. ;)

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:22

Hi sazzrah,

Trine will be priced at 19.99€, 19.99$ and 19.99£ on the PlayStation Store.
Correction: the price in the UK is expected to be £16.99

I really hope you’ll enjoy the game !

Looks really good! what features will it support? (such as XMB music or XMB screenshots)

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:41

Hi BiosNova,

Thanks for your comment,

Trine will not support the XMB music function however i’m confident that when you hear Trine’s music scores you won’t miss XMB that much :)

I’m really interested, but it’s a pity there is no online coop.

It’s allready out on Steam if you have a PC- both full game and a demo . What is up with it not being released simultaneously? – so wierd…

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:36

Hi Ennkidu,

Actually the PS3 delays are just a little longer because of extensive testing on this platform.

I sure hope the cooperative mode is both offline and online! :D

This game looks absolutely amazing! In the USA here so awaiting more details on that release date and price. :)

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:42

Hello stlthriot,

Thanks for your input, i really hope you’ll enjoy playing Trine !

The US Price will be 19,99 $ and it should hit the PlayStation Store by the end of July.

Shadow-King 09 July, 2009 @ 16:27

looks cool, thi is the first gameplay i’ve seen. is it coop? local or onlinr?

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:44

Hi Shadow-King

The co-op mode is local and it’s really fun to play, especially when one of your friends has an original idea you haven’t thought of !

TheBasilisk 09 July, 2009 @ 16:30

I will definetly buy that Game ^^

It really kind of reminds me of the old “Lost Vikings” games by Blizzard (back when they made decent games).

I’ll definitely consider this when it finally arrives.

almighty-slayer 09 July, 2009 @ 16:34

I heard that this will be $20 on the PS3 which probably means it will be about £15

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 13:45

Hello almighty-slayer,

Trine will be priced at 16,99 £ in the UK.

I played the PC demo, and I can confirm Trine’s magnificence. I decided to wait for the PS3 version, since I’m told it’s going to have a Platinum trophy. Is this true?

It’s not surprising if it’s true, since it looks like the levels are LONG! The level in the PC demo took me 45 minutes to complete, and I was left still wanting more! Other than the method of distribution, it seems like it’s been designed as a full-scale retail release. I’m really looking forward to getting this off the Store ASAP. I suppose Battlefield 1943 will have to tide me over until then! :)

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:05

Hello Heartsbane,

Thanks a lot for your comment on Trine, I’m really glad you enjoyed playing the demo.

As for your question, there is indeed a Platinum Trophy for this game :)

Looks like a lot of fun, something I probably wouldnt have considered buying before. :)

almighty-slayer 09 July, 2009 @ 16:38

Yes it does have a platinum, i heard that too. It’s a full game, ala wipEout

Diablo_Rosso 09 July, 2009 @ 16:39

Looks good.

Midnite_Blaze 09 July, 2009 @ 16:39

Is there a storyline? Cut scenes or anything like that? Or do you just go from one level to the next? It looks cool game-play wise but I do hope that there is some kind of narrative.

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:12

Hi Midnite_Blaze,

That’s a good question, yes there is an important narrative aspect to the game.

In fact, the narrator will intervene between the levels and the characters will talk to each other as well.

Will be picking this up for sure looks great and if you can make an add on for online co-op i’d certainly be willing to purchase that aswell.

The game is great!!!
I played the demo via steam on my pc. i will buy it for sure.

but now… store update please!
i want to play battlefield ;)

I’ve always thought this game looked pretty average, i probably won’t be buying it

I said the same about Infamous though before i played the demo :)

Bloody_Marcel 09 July, 2009 @ 16:47

Abysmal tearing showcased in the video. Hopefully the actual game is v-sync ON.

diangelogrey 09 July, 2009 @ 16:56

Ive been playing this game HEAPS on the PC and it is a must have title for when it releases. Really is a stunning game.

I want a release date. :(

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:14

Trine will be release at the end of July, I hope this news will turn your sad smiley into a happy one :)

Hey looking cool. The gameplay reminds me a bit of the The Lost Vikings on the SNES (if anyone played that)…good times :D

This game looks really good, it first caught my eye a few months ago. It’s definitely on my wanted list as long as the price is right (from the US pricing I’m guess £13.99 like Wipeout?) – would be nice to have a demo for that sort of price though.

I have a few questions:

1) Will the co-op element include online co-op or is it offline only?

2) Given this is a full-retail release for PC, and is more expensive than your average PSN game, will the trophies include a Platinum like Wipeout HD and Warhawk?

3) What exactly does ‘Coming Soon’ mean?

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:17

Hi Apnomis,

I’m here to answer to your questions :

1) The co-op mode will be local, so you can play with 2 other friends on the same PlayStation 3 system.
2) Here are the prices of Trine in Europe : 19.99€ and 16.99£.
3) The release date is scheduled for the end of July !

I hope you enjoy the game :)

Don_Conhulio 09 July, 2009 @ 17:13

I love the Soundtrack!

qwertyuiopasdfgh 09 July, 2009 @ 17:22

Is the co-op online, offline or both?

Can you mix the two, like play with a friend sitting beside you and another friend who is online at the same time?

Of course we’d also love to know the price and relese date if you can already share those details.

Oh and bring more 2D games!!! I love old-school platformers.

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:19

Hi qwertyuiopasdfgh,

I’m trying to respond to as many people as possible but some answers will be redundant I’m afraid. Anyway, here is what you wanted to know :

1) The co-op mode will be local, so you can play with 2 other friends on the same PlayStation 3 system.
2) Here are the prices of Trine in Europe : 19.99€ and 16.99£.
3) The release date is scheduled for the end of July !

Helvedeshunden 09 July, 2009 @ 18:16

The game seems really nice. I just wish it was coming out for 360 instead as I’d much rather play the game with that controller (was very nice on PC). I guess I may get it for PC instead, but PS3 owners are still in for a treat with this one.

makingdamage 09 July, 2009 @ 18:52

Beautiful music.

Can’t wait for your game, guys, this is typically the kind of game I’m waiting for on the psn. Hurry up Sony !
And same question than lots of people : will we have a demo of your game ?

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:20

Hi Glancelot !

There won’t be any demo of Trine on the PlayStation Store.

I hope you’ll enjoy Trine !

Ravenblade86 09 July, 2009 @ 19:49

Been looking forward to Trine for quite awhile now. The graphics look fantastic, reminds me abit of Folklore in terms off the art-style and the music is great. Day one for me :)

Oh wow! Available on PSN you say?
Well, I was going to download this off of steam, but I think I’ll get it on my playstation instead!
Thanks for putting it on the console!

Now if we only had PSN cards…

Looks interesting :) Heard rumours about an autumn release, so this is good news.

Sicilianblooded 09 July, 2009 @ 21:35

If it had coop online it would be perfect
Btw i am not buying it on pc cause i want to play it on ps3
i can’t wait

Brokenbricks 09 July, 2009 @ 21:40

This game looks beautiful!

wiktorclunk 09 July, 2009 @ 22:18

How soon is soon ???

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:29

Hi wiktorclunk,

Well, Trine should be released before the end of July :)

I want demo=)

A demo? I liked the PC demo but it left me wondering how things are going to work out without a mouse – and that trailer had pretty fast cursor movement, too, so I’m not sure if it’s from the PS3 version.

Olivier Vermeille 10 July, 2009 @ 14:31

Hi Hiying,

Do not worry, Trine is played very nicely with the PS3 Controller and you can do all the actions just as easily as with a keyboard and a mouse !

I played the PC demo and loved it. My PC isn’t great though, so I’m holding out for the PSN version.

I will buy this game, its amazing i hope will be have a online coop ^^

looks good, might buy.
