Killzone Is (Almost) Five!

November 26 will be a very special day for all of us here at Guerrilla. On that day, exactly five years ago, the very first Killzone title for PlayStation 2 hit the shelves in Europe. Sure, the game had already been released in the US three weeks prior, but hey… Guerrilla is based in the Netherlands. We commemorate the 26th, because that’s the date that we were finally able to see the fruits of our labor in Dutch stores.

Of course, it would be a shame to leave this occasion unmarked – and I’m not talking about the champagne and strange Dutch snacks we’ll undoubtedly be having at the studio. We also want to celebrate it with you, the fans. After all, the Killzone brand wouldn’t be where it is today without your support. So here’s what we have in store for you over the next few days:

  • Looking back at Killzone 1
Later this week on, Seb “Motherh” Downie and I are going to play through the first Killzone game for you. We’ll be commenting on our favourite sections and wallowing in beer-induced nostalgia.
  • DLC download code giveaway
Haven’t checked out the Killzone 2 DLC map packs yet? You’re in luck, because Guerrilla is having a DLC download code giveaway. Keep a close eye on this week for full details!
  • Killzone 2 retro tournament
This weekend (November 27-30) Guerrilla will host a Killzone 2 retro tournament, using only the Beach Head and Southern Hills maps from the second DLC pack. And there’s more to be gained than valor alone, because…
  • Double XP Weekend returns
…the tournament will take place during a Double XP Weekend! Just like last time, any game created in the weekend of November 27-30 will yield extra XP to help you boost your ranking.
  • Killzone 1 and 2 side-by-side editor Victor Zuylen will compare various features of Killzone 2 with its predecessor next week, illustrating exactly how far we’ve come since the first Killzone game was released.
  • [Update] Killzone 2 DLC Price Promotion
Between the 3rd and 17th of December there will be a price drop on the Retro Map Pack (from €5.99 to €2.99) and the Map Pack Bundle (from €11.99 to €9.99).

I hope you’ll join us in celebrating the fifth anniversary of Killzone! In the meantime, I’m going to put on my Top Hits of 2004 album and try to remember how I partied five years ago.

Eric out.

Did you enjoy this?

Only if we’re allowed to do it in a complete 60’s style, complete with bell-bottoms and disco music! πŸ˜‰

theshepanator 24 November, 2009 @ 4:07 pm   3

Great! Love killzone 2! I think no game matches it in any way, what is your fave level?

    Eric Boltjes 24 November, 2009 @ 4:11 pm

For Killzone1 it was definitely Beach Head for multiplayer, cause I am a multiplayer kinda guy πŸ™‚

Smoutefretter_BE 24 November, 2009 @ 4:07 pm   4

Loved the first killzone! played it many times mostly with Rico (badass gun :D) or Jan templar!
then totally loved killzone liberation, perfect portable version!

but Killzone 2 wasn’t that superb (my opinion!) it wasn’t bad offcourse but I’ve only finished it once and hadn’t any “connexion” with the game like killzone (& liberation).

But it’s great to see you’re supporting the game once more!

    Eric Boltjes 24 November, 2009 @ 4:12 pm

Anything I can do to convince you to like KZ2? Beer? A junior level designer that makes coffee for you?

I still dont have killzone, but it looks realy nice!

RagingAvatar 24 November, 2009 @ 4:09 pm   6

I loved Killzone 1 and still occasionally stick it on now.
A remake would be all manner of awesome though.

Do you guys have any plans for a new PSP title?

wardragon989 24 November, 2009 @ 4:10 pm   7

DLC download code giveaway?!?!

W00t! I got the first two DLC packs (and got a realy nice thank you present from GG for my HOME avatar), but never got the third =( I was considering getting it recently, so this will be a nice bonus if i can get one.

Also 5 years? Christ, i didn’t think it was that long =X

MatthewSFC 24 November, 2009 @ 4:14 pm   8

I own all 3.
I make love to all 3.
Don’t judge.

But seriously, Killzone games have to be my favourite FPS games, keep up the good work, GG!

KZ + KZ 2 + KZ 3 demo bundle for 2010?

Great news, hope I get me some DLC codes πŸ˜€

Keep up the good work KZ2 Guerrilla!

Any chance of a HD remake?

“I would love to be able to play KZ on the PS3 like God of War”

MakulaTolkien 24 November, 2009 @ 4:20 pm   14

Aw! Double XP Weekend would had been great when I hit my 100K a few weeks ago.. but it’s ok, I still love KZ2. I’m definitely going to play this weekend… Happy 5th birthday KZ1 and congratulations Guerrilla for creating one of my favorite shooters of all time Killzone 2. I know “journalists” won’t consider KZ2 as GoTY, but for me and many FPS fans you guys are on the best.

WOW happy Birthday KILLZONE!!!! and well done everyone at GG for bringing the Killzone experience to us and inviting us to its Birthday πŸ™‚

TheHunterAmin 24 November, 2009 @ 4:28 pm   16

Happy Birthday Killzone!!

PS: No little party event at the studio? I will be there πŸ˜›

DeforMAKulizer 24 November, 2009 @ 4:30 pm   17

I, honest to god, think that you guys are one of the best studios here in Europe, and can’t express the amount of joy knowing you are under the Sony family, alongside Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Evolution, London, Cambridge, Insomniac (Ya i know they are independent, but i really hope they all remain faithful to Sony platforms), Sucker Punch (Same as latter! :P), Zipper, Media Molecule… ETC..
I still remember picking up the killzone cover issue of OPM back in 2003, and going berserk over the game! And then off to Liberation, and then the god like E3 trailer (which i personally thought you guys couldn’t match) but just went ahead and crushed every doubt in me to create one of the best and most beautiful FPS games ever, with wonderful multiplayer!
I bow to you GG!!! You deserve the utmost best! Congrats guys!
I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us (Be it KZ related or not!)

astrocrack 24 November, 2009 @ 4:32 pm   18

I need to start playing Killzone 2 again.

theshepanator 24 November, 2009 @ 4:33 pm   19

I like helghan industries, Great for search & destroy! and lots of places to hide for assasination πŸ˜€ Do you accept postal hampers? πŸ˜‰

Killzone Liberation was my first acquaintance with the Killzone-universe. Killzone 2 has been my most played game on the PS3 so far; love the multiplayer, even though I have a long way to go still πŸ™‚

Congrats on the anniversary and send my regards to Steven ter H.

GamesPlayer 24 November, 2009 @ 4:36 pm   21

After my 2 years old 60GB ps3 YLOD i didn’t have the chance to buy the i have the PS3 Slim and can get into this game once again.
The more i play other shooters (Modern Warfare 2 included) the more i want to play KIllzone 2..i don’t know.I loved the first one…it’s probably LOVE.

I’m just sad that a lot of people didn’t get this game, It deserves WAYYYY more attention…

Guerrila matched my expectations with this game.IF, one day, i got to be a programmer in the gaming industry, I wouldn’t mind working with you guys !! ^_^

Is it going to be a lower price for the map packs just for this KZ birthday?

Keep up the awesome work !!

Congrats to Killzone! KZ2 is still propably my favourite game this generation. You guys did an amazing job on it.

Gelukkige verjaardag, Killzone… and many happy returns to come!

Smoutefretter_BE 24 November, 2009 @ 4:39 pm   24

beer will do just fine (jupiler please :P)
but don’t get me wrong, I love the game a bit but not as much as KZ1 and liberation πŸ˜‰

Oh and reading about a KZ1 remake, PLEASE ask :d would be pretty sweet to play the first game again with hd gfx and trophies ( if the damn synch is fixed grrrr) :d

Happy Birthday, I loved all the KZ games and KZ2 is definite;y one of the best and most beatiful games I’ve ever played, you guys are awesome. I have all the DLC’s so I’ll be playing on the double XP weekend.

Question though- What was your favourite and/or most challenging KZ game to make

    Eric Boltjes 24 November, 2009 @ 4:42 pm

Well Killzone 1 was challenging because it was all new for us as a company; we had so much to learn. KZ2 was a challenge because we had set such high requirements for ourselves to meet; we really had high ambitions. But I personally feel we delivered good games on both accounts!

Amherst_Wind_4 24 November, 2009 @ 4:41 pm   26

No sale on our store for the DLC? πŸ™
Just when I thought you guys were being heroes for Europe for once…

theshepanator 24 November, 2009 @ 4:42 pm   27

A hamper is a package of goodies. Do you like chocolate? πŸ˜›

Eric, you are a beautiful person bringing beautiful news.

I notice you didn’t mention the map packs price drop here that the US store is getting. Is that coming our way too or was that their ‘concession’ on not getting the chance to enter the competition?

    Eric Boltjes 24 November, 2009 @ 4:45 pm

Again sorry guys, can’t make any promises here… We’ll have to wait and see!

The1stMJC 24 November, 2009 @ 4:43 pm   29

Love this game haven’t really played a lot since my 100k point run (400hrs to get 100k), but I jump on for a little bit almost every Friday for what my clan calls Killzone Friday every week. So double XP will mean more people on Killzone Friday for me to abuse.

This game is in my all time favorite games since I can’t remember putting 400 hours into a game before.

Can you expand on this tourney because if it takes place on Beach Head and Southern Hills I am very interested. Beach Head FTW

Croopnick_PL 24 November, 2009 @ 4:47 pm   30

I love the first Killzone!
It was diffrent than other shooters I played. No runing and shooting but watching corners, killing enemies one by one.
TBH te 2nd dont suits me that much, but it’s still the great game!

monkeypirate 24 November, 2009 @ 4:49 pm   31

i’d love to join in on the double Xp weekend but my PS3 just died of the YLOD and i can’t afford to get it replaced at the mo πŸ™

Hopefully you’ll be doing another one when KZ2 turns one?

Happy Birthday to the truly remarkable and exemplary team at GG! You guys simply never cease to amaze us with your phenomenal and ever-growing franchise: Killzone.

Being a fan from the very first instants, i had submitted my online application to take part in the Kz2 Beta last fall in order to have the prestigious opportunity to play the game months prior to its official release. And i did get accepted, thanks to SCEE and GG! I truthfully could not describe how excited i was during the instants following the acceptance email i had received from SCE France. Soon after downloading the file from the Playstation Store and logging in to the servers, i joined my very first game. And the graphics took my breath away.

After taking part in the beta and submitting my feedbacks on the forums, i eagerly awaited the release of Killzone2. {{Since i am bringing up the forums, I though of sincerely thanking once again Seb for being so active with the community since the beta-phase all the way until after release}} On February 25th, few hours after work, I rushed to my videogame store and picked up my copy. As soon as i came back home and inserted the disc, I was instantly submerged with epicness.

Thank you.

RenorMirshann 24 November, 2009 @ 4:52 pm   33

The first Killzone was one of my few impulse buys, I really didn’t know much about the game and wasn’t much into FPS games… But I loved it, completed it several times and bought the sequel day one (steelbok version, kickass cover ;)).

Happy birthday, Killzone! Can’t wait for unveiling of your next project, GG πŸ™‚

I want to thank you all for being a great fan base, for all the kind words and for supporting Killzone and Guerrilla for all these years! We couldn’t have done it without you!!!!!

gillyallan 24 November, 2009 @ 4:58 pm   37

Are we finished totally with patches for KZ2 ??

Just wondered if room for one little more to add the pSN ID status updates to it that lets others see what map, etc you are playing, or if you’re playing a single player game, etc.

Simple but nice…..bit like me. :p

FFObsessed 24 November, 2009 @ 5:12 pm   38

Hi Mr. Boltjes. Appreciate the comments. Posted on the US blog but I’ll ask here as well, any chance you’ll pop in and say hi on the NeoGAF KILLZONE 2 thread? πŸ™‚

Most popular KZ2 thread on the internet that’s for sure. And I, as I’m sure you’re well aware, am one of KZ2’s biggest fans.

A LEGEND of the KZ2 community some might say… or not. πŸ˜›

I love all the Killzone games. Played them to death. Makes me proud to be Dutch. Let’s eat cake together the 26th. I’m buying.

Any chance of taking off the ‘Copy Protect’ off the Killzone 2 save? I want to back-up my saves + if i get a PS3:Slim i want to move my old Killzone 2 save? Thanks πŸ˜‰

i think i’ll be getting some split screen action on then with the original KZ, shame i can’t go online with it as it asks for a username and password long long forgotten.

FYI: the original Killzone runs just fine on a launch 60Gb PS3 and in 1080p!! who’d have ever thought we’d have seem that five years ago?

Cesarcsrf 24 November, 2009 @ 6:20 pm   47

Happy B.Day Killzone ! \m/

I never got a chance to play the original Killzone on PS2, but I love KZ2 on PS3 and it’s one of my 10 Platinum trophies too (probably the hardest one I’ve unlocked so far!). It might be time to revisit a bit of KZ2 multiplayer as it’s been a while, and I’ve still got some of the Map Pack trophies to unlock…

How much disc space did the original game take up? Would a PSN remake with trophies and online play (like they have done with the original Call of Duty) be feasible? Hint Hint πŸ˜‰

Any chance of getting those interactive automatic cross game invites which are available with the ps3 firmware as of recently..
Was using them with mw2 and they are really really handy.
Make psn and gaming with friends 100 times easier.

i have 3 questions to ask there gonna be a update to make the psn friends list like mw2 so you can join friends online and see if what maps they are on and stuff

2. any word if the killzone 2 dlc is getting a price cut (but since sony has something against us europeans prolly not)

3. are there gonna be any more dlc packs if there are could you make the trophies easyish to get

and great work on the game guys

Diablo_Rosso 24 November, 2009 @ 7:25 pm   51

awesome game!!!!

johndrinkwater 24 November, 2009 @ 8:17 pm   54

Just bought Killzone 2 last week (been creating a collection since I got a PS3 slim), the multiplayer is *excellent*. Single player is graphically lovely, but the plot is only decent – the script (Rico!) needed a little more πŸ˜€
With news of adhocParty coming soon, I also bought Killzone: Liberation today. I’ll say more once i’ve been through it – the in-game section is broken though, cant register to upload stats πŸ™

Bahamut44-4 24 November, 2009 @ 8:29 pm   55

Congrats on the success! Killzone 2 rocks hard (Even if I curse you guys everytime im fighting Radec on Elite! ;))

Keep up the great work, looking forward to Killzone 3.

deadman578 24 November, 2009 @ 8:43 pm   56

I don’t know what it is about Killzone, but when playing it something feels just right. Pure fun.
Might have to try and get my hands on those map packs.
Wish I had my Ps3 on me now, I’d so be joining for double weekend!

Congratz for the five years I have the first and the second killzone and love them.

One question Eric, do you have any industrial designer in your team? Someday I want to be in this industry πŸ˜›

    Eric Boltjes 25 November, 2009 @ 8:44 am

Yes we do actually! Our visual design team (the guys that make all the pretty drawings and are the masters of the Killzone visual universe) has several industrial designers! So definitely it’s possible for you to get into our little industry if you work hard enough! πŸ™‚

TehPhilosopher 24 November, 2009 @ 9:21 pm   58

Congratulations on the 5th! I recently started playing KZ2 multiplayer again, and am (again) enjoying it a lot.

Now, if only there were more servers with hardcore FF on action…

twistedintoform 24 November, 2009 @ 9:24 pm   59

more new map packs for KZ2 would be awesome! πŸ˜‰ it would bring me back to KZ2.. well i still play occasionally, but not as avidly as i did, got around 23000 kills or so. there’s been so many games (i still have 2 unopened!) and betas lately.. but probably no game until KZ3 is going to come close to the hours i played this (i have only 84% of the trophies though! :P). unfortunately you picked a weekend where i have to work long hours so i can’t take advantage of double xp weekend to get closer to that 100,000. PS3 is my first console, so as others have suggested, a PSN remake of the first game would be great.. the beach head and southern hills maps look fantastic in the KZ2 engine. πŸ™‚

Hehe… Killzone 2 definitly belongs to my top 5 of ’09 games!

Quite a shame I’ve never played the first Killzone. I never had a PS2. But Killzone: Liberation was one of my first PSP games, that one rocked πŸ˜€ One of the more decent PSP games!!

Killzone 2 is just stunning 😐 Just popped it back in my PS3 last weekend (after a loooonnng break :O). It still rocks πŸ˜›
I was killing bots all weekend xD The Skirmish mode is pure fun ‘n’ relaxing when you’re not in need of human comptetition. Visuals are still stunning, one of the best or THE best looking game on my PS3!

I think I’ll be hunting for the DLC code to put some more hours in Killzone 2 πŸ™‚

    Eric Boltjes 25 November, 2009 @ 8:43 am

You should try KZ1 just for the heck of it! Looking back now we’ve come such a long way with KZ2 and the PS3 but it’s always nice to remember the roots…

@ Eric Boltjes
A beer is good, and maybe a free example of the game? πŸ˜€

Killzone 2 is an awesome game, with a great campaign mode & Online mode, i’ve never been a fan of FPS games, but after trying the Killzone 2 demo i decided to give it a go and never looked back, now i look forward to the next installment.

There are very few games around that get the right balance between the single player and online modes, most people will be interested in one or ther other but KZ2 manages to deliver on both fronts and are equally enjoyable.

I hope to be lucky enough to get a map pack code.

smokeypsd 25 November, 2009 @ 4:01 am   66

Rofl, the killzone 1 remake idea 60’s style is inspired, I’d pay for it (dunno who else would) but I most def would lol.

Gaan jullie bitterballen, frikandellen en kroketten eten?

Fox-One-1 25 November, 2009 @ 8:36 am   69

I loved the first one and the liberation. I like Killzone 2 a lot, but for some reason I feel like there is something missing in there. Anyways, I would love to see PSP remake of the original, with improved physics and fully customizable controls! Please make it!

Double XP weekend! Awesome! Now I might finally get the commander in chief rank. Only 15k points to go :)And I just want to thank you guys for making one of my favourite games of all time. Everything just works perfectly in Killzone 2 (exepct little lag in multiplayer… Warhawk style dedicated servers to Killzone 3 please). As someone stated above don’t care what these β€œjournalists” says. Killzone 2 is the game of the year 2009! Keep up the good work Guerrilla Games!

i always wondered why game makers don’t use the maps they made for the first game and add it for online play of the second game (+the maps of the second game) i know that beach head and Southern Hills is from the first game (i am right, right?) but i bet their were allot more maps on KZ1

Congratulations Guerilla.

You got a lot of hassle from the press and kept optimistic.

I really like KZ1&2 and will be online this weekend

double xp weekend i am so there! i haven’t played killzone in ages!

Hey guys you should offer the DLC bundle sale and/or the DLC download code giveaway THIS WEEK for PAL countries so that more players from our region will be able to participate in the Killzone 2 retro tournament and Double XP Weekend

I am very proud that my country has developed such good game! I play Killzone 2 every day and i think it has the best multiplayer at the moment.

congratulations Guerilla Games!

I played MAG last night and I must say, it really reminds me how much I miss Killzone 2 and my old KZ2 Clan. I’ll see if they are up for a quick reunion this week-end.

I hope we get some Killzone 3, or what ever other project you guys are working on, information soon. Keep up the great work.

I sure want to play the game… But I can’t πŸ™ My PS3 is the 80GB version, without the backwards compatiblity!

Although I haven’t played Killzone 1. I’ve seen a lot of the game. Prior to Killzone 2’s release, I’ve watched some walkthroughs and cutscenes from Killzone 1. Just to get into the universe and it’s story.
Poor Helghan men, and awesome Visari speech!

Oh.. uhm @ Eric Boltjes (again).. The commenting section on your news items (on seems to be down and out. Since there are no comments and I’m not getting through either.

But I guess you’re already working on it :)?

The Killzone website is broken, it signs you out just after you click some link in the website and comments don’t work.

twistedintoform 25 November, 2009 @ 10:13 pm   81

“Gaan jullie bitterballen, frikandellen en kroketten eten?”

i don’t know how you dutch people eat that stuff!! πŸ˜›

“Everything just works perfectly in Killzone 2 (exepct little lag in multiplayer… Warhawk style dedicated servers to Killzone 3 please)”

warhawk doesn’t have pure dedicated servers (otherwise why would there be a gold trophy for hosting a game for four hours?!). it does have servers which manage statistics and stuff. i’ve played around 800 games in KZ2 and it’s never lagged for me (and only disconnected twice), and my broadband is nothing special. it uses a pretty clever server/p2p setup in order to work (i’ve read that it only uses about 20KB/s of bandwidth), and works great. plus it offers regionalisation – something MW2 desperately needs, because the infinity ward matchmaking system is CRAP. about 80% of the time that game is unplayable for me and i have to quit out because it seems to think i’d rather play mexicans and south americans with a 300+ms ping than with anybody in the UK at <50ms..

I hope you going to read this. If you are based in europe why you release the game first in USA. I hope that the next KillZone you going to make exclusive for Europe for some time maybe for a month. And make the online trophy a little bit simpler.

KillZone is a graet game and I am relly happy that is done in Europe. Keep up a good work and suprise as in Europe. THX.

Hi Eric,

i love KZ2 and i am looking forward to another map pack or may be any single player level as was mentioned in time of game release!

Do you have any plans to release any other DLC for KZ2 or are you already working on KZ3?

many thanks for georgeous work to all Guerila team!

godofwar_fan 26 November, 2009 @ 3:58 pm   84

You guys rock.

I have been crazily playing warzone ever since the game released. Thanks to exams and all i have not been able to play warzone or any other game for that matter between oct-december5th.
I will be back in december guys.

@Mr Eric Boltjes

Sir hats off to you. Each and every time i play warzone i end up playing every match with that big fat smile because i appreciate every little detail and effort put in warzone. And i was awed when i came to know that your the only fps developers who managed to maintain the same graphics fidelity between single player component and the multiplayer component. In december i would be back to the good old days of Killzone 2.I am like a big killzone 2 fan from India.I was like very very lucky in owning the Steel box edition of kz2 way back in Feb.

To Guerilla Games

You have made the best killzone 2 game, as a diehard playstation gamer i wanted a game which can beat the rival consoles sci-fi based fps game and by the gods you guys have pulled off a visual show piece to watch and play. Thus i want you guys to make an fps game which will be set in earth, having US marines,British army fighting against terrorists and stuff and show earthly environments.Happy birthday KZ

I’ve just noticed on the Killzone home page that the EU is getting the DLC bundle at a reduced price between December 3 to December 17!!! It’s mentioned beside the picture of the Helghan cake.

Great news!
