Many of those “new” titles are already on there?

Poor Eire with no store :(

European product marketing director Mark Hardy told Eurogamer, “The plan is to update the store on a weekly basis and add a minimum of 50 movies every time we update.”

Best laid plans eh?

Nice little promotion there with the free Transformers movie.

I have to say, I can’t see myself buying too many movies from the PlayStation Store, especially as there’s some really good prices around for Blu-rays now, e.g. The Dark Knight for £7 new etc. But the rental option is good for convenience in the evenings and such; although I hear the download speeds aren’t too great, but that’s another issue. 1080P streaming would be ftw. =P

Are there plans to bring TV Shows to the Video Store?

That’s definitely something which would interest me. Thanks.

4.1

Thank you for your comment. At this moment we are focusing on movies only but definitely looking into bringing TV shows as well in the near future. I will keep you posted!

Will terminator be available to rent?

5.1

yes it will be available to rent in January

So the video store isn’t capable of delivering content on a regular basis as promised like the Games store?

What happened to 50 a week? Why do Americans get HD movies to buy at a decent price when we get charged £11.99 for an SD movie?

I hope the comic guys at least get it right :(

why does every country apart from the uk get harry potter and the half blood price? also most off this weeks update was already there.

Any chance of a proper breakdown of what went on this week. Because I would like to see the 50 that were added this week without having to navigate the store constantly ;)

Thanks,

RM

Its not up to us really :) Harry Potter will be available in the UK on December 7th

Thanks for the update, I have a couple of questions about it and the store in general:

You finish the UK list with, “and many more!”

Is there a full list of titles anywhere? Also we had Star Trek last week, does listing it here mean that it’s now available to rent?

Following on from that, at the moment it doesn’t seem possible to rent the newer titles. Is this a temporary issue or will it be standard practice going forwards that new releases will only be available to buy?

50 titles?
Any chances on proper lists? Maybe just a link to another page with the list on it?
A lot of those ‘new’ titles are already on the store. You couldn’t be a little more clear on whether they are HD, rental or anything could you?

10.1

Hi Sasukekun, take a look at our website, there is a full list available under studio pages. Let me know if there is a specific title you after and I can check its availability cheers

Hey olga, please give us some hints, when the movies will be available in 5.1 dolby digital & with language selection possibility.

don´t want to watch the movies with stereo sound & in german.

I think Sony have missed a trick here – why should I pay so much for an SD film when I can hire the blu rays cheaper with companies like love film. For this to work I think they should introduce a monthly subscription where you either get unlimited streams like netflix or certain amount of films a month. I would pay £10 for say four or five movie a month – in HD I may add!

also guys can i request that changes are made so that purchased films or shows appear in the download list? Lots of people have already lost paid for films

15

Hope you can answer this for me. For me the rental service is the killer app here. So it is a little disappointing that a lot of the major films are to own only. Will the films that are currently only to own ever be rentable or will they stay to purchase only?

15.1

yes they will be. Usually new releases are available to buy first and then couple weeks later for rental.

@11

I second that

Tried out the rental this week and I got to say that I was positively surprised. We watched one of the older Star Trek movies and although it is slightly under DVD quality (which might of course be related to the source material), the streaming and simultaneous viewing worked perfectly as it should.
It’s a nice chance to catch up with all those movies I didn’t get to see, yet. Especially for those rental-only titles.

Now we just need a bit more HD content and proper sound/language like Samarotu said and I’d be more than content with the service.

Well, there is still the issue concerning release dates, but I think until the (movie) industry considers to put out the US version in Europe at the same time, I’ll be a very old man.
Then again, if someone would be able to push such a demand, it would be someone like you guys.

Great job on the video store!

The store was a huge success? I’m surprised at that based on the prices you’re charging for some of the content! Also I’m pretty sure everyone of the titles listed in the UK update were on the store last week, so I’m not sure how this classes as an update?

My main problem with the Video Store though is the audio! I can’t believe you’re using stereo sound in this day and aged, especially based on the prices you’re charging and what you’re competition is doing.

I tried a preview of one of the titles on the store and on my surround sound system there was no way to even matrix it to 5.1 as the signal sent to my amp via XMB based video is Linear:PCM (I use HDMI audio). As far as I can tell there is no way around this as you can’t use PLIIx on an L:PCM signal! I’m not faffing about with my audio options on the PS3 everytime I want to view a movie, and I’m not paying nearly £5 to watch a movie out of stereo speakers!

Does the PS3 dual output sound to HDMI and Optical at the same time now? I suppose I could do that and set my amp up to alternate inputs depending on what I’m doing with the PS3 – but I shouldn’t have to mess about like this! Maybe the actual movie file is different than the Store preview, but I’m not taking the chance…

This is and will be my number 1 request on the Video Store, and I doubt I’ll be using it until it is addressed…

The video store is a great idea. However, I will not be using it. Why? Because virtually all of the movies, whether rental or purchase, only have 2 channel sound. 2 channel sound on HD movies?! Why give a high quality picture and then cripple it with only stereo sound?! Where’s the Dolby 5.1 surround sound gone?! Due to this, I won’t rent any HD movies from the store, I’d rather go to BlockBuster and get them from there for a similar price. As for the SD movie purchase prices, they are too expensive, you can get them cheaper in the shops and have the physical media to boot.

I’m really interested in this video service, but I have a question: Do the videos come with Subtitles?

I’m afraid that’s a deal breaker if they don’t since my girlfriend is hard of hearing.

Like other people, I was surprised at the lack of surround sound audio. I was also surprised at how many films were only available to purchase, not rent. I don’t see myself EVER purchasing a downloadable film, especially at the prices your asking for.

Also, any idea of when we’ll be able to get TV programmes?

@13 – I thought about this too. If the upcoming PSN paid subscription model introduces things like this, it might be quite appealing.

23

I’m also living in Germany ( from Wales originally) and although i speak and understand German, it is shocking that i can’t watch the films in the original language. Also a lot of people who are German watch films in English or what ever language they where shot in ( what ever happened to subtitles!). I think the dubbing artists do a great job but it should be really up to us how we want to see the film as some people think that this issue compromises the film. I would really like to use this service, so please conciser addressing this issue, then i’ll be your friend again!

Damn the lack of edit function in these comments – even if it’s only open for 5 minutes after posting! Please ignore the typos in my original post, I had a late night playing MW2 and my brain isn’t quite up to full speed yet!

Also it’s good to see I’m not the only one that thinks lack of 5.1 audio is a deal breaker, hopefully Sony will hear the calls loudly enough to do something about it!

Oh and I agree that all titles should be rental – I can only see owning digital SD movies for £12 being popular for that niche of PSP owners that regularly travel and used to buy UMD movies for the same price!

25

I just wanted to start by saying thank you so much for bringing us an amazing video store. Nearly every movie I’ve wanted to watch recently is on there, and I’ll be spending quite a bit of time watching some films from now on.

However I just have one question, I’m just interested in an answer really, I’m not too worried if it’s changed or not in the future. Why can we not buy HD movies to keep? We can rent HD and SD movies, but for purchase, films are only available in SD. Why is this?

I apologise if there are some films available, but I’ve looked through quite a number now and haven’t seen any available to purchase in HD. I know that you’ve probably been asked this before, but I’d like to know for myself.

Thanks for your time, and thank you for the video store!

25.1

thank you so much for your feedback :) HD movies to buy will be available soon. I will keep you posted once I know more details
cheers

Can you tell us when it is coming to Ireland? The original press release said it would…

Thanks!

I can’t believe the blog is still going with all the crap people spurt on here.

No one is ever satisfied here and only ever puts in the effort to complain, [DELETED] and whine, its pathetic.

There’s 830 Million people in Europe and you guys expect Sony to be able to cater for any and everyones’ wants? The Video store is great and when they get round to regular additions it will be even better but its only a bloody week old and your all whinging already. Give it time.

Cant you guys release all films in the all of Europe at same time? I live in Spain yet i am english and always miss the good stuff :-( If it comes out on DVD in spanish and English wouldnt mind it on the store like that aswell ;-)

However there are some crackers that the Spain store did get, Transformers revenge of the fallen, AWESOME film that my GF hated, cant see why lol i want to watch them all except Harry Potter :-) they will be rents though until i get a bigger HDD in December.

28.1

LOL I wish we could but release dates are managed by the studios not us :)
why not Harry? :)its awesome!

The lack of language selection in the german store makes this unusable for me. I hope multiple language tracks will be made available in the future. Until then i will be going to the video store around the corner and get my films there.

I asked this in the last Video Store blog entry but got no reply.

In your original post you said “Just register your new console on PlayStation Network between November 19 and 30″ but later on you replied to someone with “Anyone who registers for a PSN account using their new PS3s between 19th & 30th November 2009″

So which one is it? Cause I registered the playstation itself on the 19th.

30.1

If you never been registred on PSN before and register between 19 – 30 (doesn’t matter if its a new console or an old one)then this promotion applies to you and we will email you the voucher very soon!

Also… even iTunes has 5.1 audio on their videos.

The rentals seem to be extremely steep in comparison to stores, considering that you have relatively few overheads.

33

I think it’s really silly that Star Trek isn’t available in HD, seen as it’s a very visually stunning film.

WHEN WILL YOU MAKE THE PLAYSTATION NETWORK AVAILABLE FOR REGISTRATION TO PLAYSTATION 3 OWNERS IN MOROCCO ?

35

Great, another blogseries (Vidzone was no1) that will be irrelevant to 95% of europeans ._.

Firstly for all those banging on about “OMG YOU SED FIFTEE FYLMZ A WIIK!!”, read the OP again, see where it says “and many more!”?
That clearly means it’s not a comprehensive list.

Secondly, I agree with most that the prices are steep, the audio is not adequate in this day and age, and the lack of rental on some new films is baffling.

Finally, to end more positively, there are some real classics in there, not to mention one or two fairly obscure films, which are certainly worth renting.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the selection on offer, films like “The Jerk” and “Funny Farm”, or ‘In the Hands of Gods”.
Maybe some asian stuff on there would be good, Chan Wook Park or Kitano Takeshi stuff, to appeal to the more discerning film fan?

Anyway, needs work, but it’s not a bad start for the Vid Store, I hope to see it come on in leaps and bounds, just like Vidzone.

Olga,
Whilst a highlights list is good, it would be nice to see a complete list of this week’s new titles rather than just a “many more”. Frankly, browsing through the New Releases section of the store just takes too much time :P

Is there any date for the release of a dutch video store?
Would be really cool to have my own videostore at home!:)
A good reason for my parents to buy a PlayStation 3!

I’d like to see a subscription model for the video store please. I know it’s probably in the pipeline. So I’m looking forward to having an alternative to my Love Film subscription. I’ll pay a little more for the advantage of not having to post films and wait for them to arrive. But not too much more (!), so please price it realistically as well. :)

Also, I’m not really interested in SD content (who is?!), that’s part of the reason I bought a PS3 – it came with Blu-ray and HD media capabilities from day 1. SD content is dead. Why should there be a huge difference in price between HD and SD content anyway? I can understand that blu-ray discs currently cost more to manufacture than DVDs. When you’re dealing with streamed media, it’s only the extra storage and bandwidth that would affect your own costs of providing the movie, and it shouldn’t affect it very much.

Stereo sound and dubbed audio only? horrible :D

i hope you can release the store in Finland soon with original language and maybe even 5.1 sound…

I dont see myself downloading anything on the video store anytime soon.
First of all i find the lack of content against the american store pretty bad, i was hopeing that i can buy and enjoy my favorite tv shows over the playstation network for a reasonable price.
Also its pretty sad that you dont get to choose your audio track, i prefer watching my movies in english instead of german.
And the biggest point against the store (besides the mostly way to high prices) is that it only has 2 channel Audio Tracks. I mean common, a HD Video with only stereo sound? For what i got a 5.1 system?
Lets hope this will change in the future.

And subtitles, btw dubbed audio is for morons that ignore the fact there is more then one language in the world

It would be surprising how many people actually purchase these movies online because I don’t see myself doing this anytime soon anyway… prefer hard copy thanks ;)

@reakt

I don’t mind there being SD stuff on there, not all films are filmed/available in HD. If you were to eliminate SD, it would mean missing out on a huge back catalogue of great old films and a fair few recent obscure ones.

When’s Ireland gonna get a store :(

Oz?
Aussie..??
AUSTRALIA!!!!!!!!

*drops to knees and hits floor*

Thats my Stella impression,lol
Seriously though,
Any info as to when?
I’m not worried about it to much because of my circumstances atm, but i just want you guys to hurry up and beat 360s time (from announcement) as it was just released recently.
I think you still have a year up your sleeve to beat their time frame till they provided but either way i’m pleased with the service thus far.
It’s a service i can’t wait for.

Keep up the good work :)

46.1

Hello Linconan! we are on the way to OZ as well! As soon as I have a date I will post it here :)
have a lovely weekend!

Please, make the original language version available for the french market (with or without subtitiles, I don’t care)… I can’t stand looking at a english/american movie french dubbed… :(

When is this hitting Australia?

I just want to rent stuff. I’m not interested in owning films because most films I’ve bought on blu-ray I’ve only ever watched once.

50

MORE RENTAL CONTENT (Star Trek, Public Enemies etc..)

Lower prices (I can rent a full blu-ray for less than on your store)

MORE HD CONTENT!
