PS3 System Software Update – 3.15

Hi Guys

The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –

minis‘ come to PS3:

PS3 minis

We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.

Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).

If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.

If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well.

PS3 Data Transfer:

PS3 Data Transfer Utility

This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.

Did you enjoy this?

Minis are designed for PSP with a small resolution. How will be this minis look on HD TV? Will be “pixelized”?

Guillemots 8 December, 2009 @ 2:55 pm   3

will the ps3 ever get twitter? like the 360… lol

Carnivius_Prime 8 December, 2009 @ 2:55 pm   5

Excellent new features. Thanks. My personal favorite Mini’s have been the good ol’ Amiga games Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies. Would love more Amiga games to appear on PS3/PSP as a mini (ideally Turrican II 😛 ) but that’s probably just wishful thinking.

Hirndoctor 8 December, 2009 @ 2:56 pm   6

Is it possible to copy only one savegame (such as a Killzone 2 Save) on another PS3?

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 3:43 pm

Just checking mate, will get back to you ASAP

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 6:49 pm

Hi Hirndoctor, you can copy all PS3 save data except for game saves that are protected by the game publishers through the transfer utility. Please check in the game manual for Killzone to find out if the game saves are protected

Deviil-Boy 8 December, 2009 @ 2:57 pm   7

Excellent !

will the ps3 ever get twitter? like the 360… lol

Use the browser?… lol

sweet jesus. now i can play field runners on my ps3 😀

nickjd331 8 December, 2009 @ 2:57 pm   10

Not that I have any minis yet, or a 2nd PS3, but I still love the sound of this.

YobRenoops 8 December, 2009 @ 2:58 pm   11

What about the postulated Controller Sync fix?

Also will this transfer my Singstar DLC or will I have to relicense it?

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 6:52 pm

You can NOT transfer Singstar DLC through the transfer utility but you should be able to re-download it on the new machine (however some tracks may no longer be available on the store)

I’m sad that this function is available, now… “PS3 Data Transfer”

I needed that 2 months agon, when I sold my fat one and bought the slim… 🙁

The minis-thing is cool…
Will we get twitter someday?!

The normal question. Will we get XMB voice chat?

Paranoimia 8 December, 2009 @ 2:59 pm   15

I’ve read that this also fixes the controller sync issues – is that the case?

YobRenoops 8 December, 2009 @ 2:59 pm   16

Do you need a normal ethernet cable or do you have to use a cross-over cable?

So thats a FULL transfer of all save game data (copy protected?) everything???

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 6:50 pm

No, copy protected save data can not be transfered due to publisher’s requirements

Nice! The copy thingy will be awesome for those that don’t have an external hdd to backup the PS3 to.

So we need BOTH PS3’s? Not many people will have both at the same time, let us back up onto an external HDD and let us carry over our protected saves!

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

you can back up most things to an external HDD but due to publisher’s requirements some game saves will be protected and are unable to backed up

Gestahl09 8 December, 2009 @ 3:04 pm   20

Nice feature with the playable Minis!! Now please make it possible to play normal PSP games on our PS3s. 🙂

When will “Cross-game chat” come?

ReverendMJ 8 December, 2009 @ 3:04 pm   22

Nice idea with the ps3 to ps3 copying…

Now then, how about Skype please?? I can just picture myself sitting infront of my TV, just like Blofeld, making video calls.

Please say it will happen, after all, you guys did it for the PSP, why not for its bigger, more powerful brother.. Imagine, it will actually make the PS3 camera useful!!!

That is awesome news! Great update! Thanks guys!

Minis ? nice ! so i don’t have to buy PSPGo to play it . but yet still no ……………………………………. voice chat T_T .

MalcolmHB 8 December, 2009 @ 3:05 pm   25

On the subject of backing up, will the ability to backup all save games to an external hard drive at once ever be added instead of having to copy them all one at a time

Also will we ever be able to have the XMB icon sizes back how they were before 3.0?

BackedOut_ 8 December, 2009 @ 3:06 pm   26

Any ideas when we are getting move avatars? Please?

And great update. I’ll be playing Fieldrunners!

jasonfweb 8 December, 2009 @ 3:07 pm   27

will data transfer enable to copy encrypted saves like rock band’s?

New picture list also for pics on media servier please!

randellaUK 8 December, 2009 @ 3:09 pm   29

i hope it works on locked saves as got now 2 ps3 systems and get confused at times with games like resident evil 5 and street fighter vi that i cannot transfer my saves over to my new slim 🙁

Yes! So my purchases of the two pinball games will be on the big screen soon!

Please more Amiga ports:
Turrican, North & South etc.

nineinchnailed 8 December, 2009 @ 3:11 pm   31

“If you have already brought a mini for PSP”

I think you mean BOUGHT. As in, ‘to buy’.

BaSeBaLlKiD721 8 December, 2009 @ 3:13 pm   32

Will the locked saved data be transferred as well? Please let me know as I am dying to upgrade my PS3 hard drive but the locks are holding me back…

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

Sorry but you won’t be able to transfer some game saves as they are protected by the publishers

candystripesdcfc 8 December, 2009 @ 3:13 pm   33

@ YobRenoops: A crossover ethernet cable seems more likely than a normal one.

TiranKenja 8 December, 2009 @ 3:15 pm   34

Looks like someone else asked. But does that mean we can actually move over device locked save games? That would be nice. Although it don’t solve anything for people whose PS3 broke and get a new one. Even if they have a backup their device locked save games is lost…

I wonder who came up with that protection scheme to begin with. He should be forced to come around and recreate the save games for everyone who lost theirs this way. Manually. By playing though the games 😉

madmonkey01 8 December, 2009 @ 3:15 pm   35

can the cross over be uesd for singstar songs? i got my slim 2 weeks ago and lost afew of my saves, but most importantly was the £100+ worth of songs on singstar, my missus was not impressed.

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 7:00 pm

you can’t directly transfer SingStar DLC but you can re-download the tracks on the new PS3 provided they are still available on the store. That should get most of them back and get you some brownie points!

WizardWeb 8 December, 2009 @ 3:16 pm   36

Data transfer is good, but then so is the HD back-up. Looking at it though, neither will let you transfer singstar purchases. After my PS3 died a few months back I was only allowed to re-download song purchases because Sony supplied the replacement. It was explained if I went out and bought another machine, then I wouldn’t have been allowed. So I’ve stopped downloading songs now, in case it happens again.

Mini’s are good though, but it’d be better if all the PSP (and PS2) games worked on PS3.

TheSabreman 8 December, 2009 @ 3:16 pm   37

“So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content”

Do you mean lose ?

mrfight67 8 December, 2009 @ 3:17 pm   38

2 quick questions. Where will the minis save data be saved, in a new folder or in PS3 save utility? And will the PS3 mini be separate to the PSP one, or will you play the PSP one, and press triangle to copy it?

Thanks if you answer, and also thanks for the update!

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 7:02 pm

minis will have their own save utility folder on the PS3 xmb. The minis game playable on the PS3 is the same as playable on the PSP. It is exactly the same file.

betahoven 8 December, 2009 @ 3:17 pm   39

Nice little update. I imagine the Minis devs are pretty happy about this as well.

Just to echo what someone else has posted above, Skype on PS3 would be fantastic, especially if you could stay signed in while playing a game.

D__Alucard 8 December, 2009 @ 3:20 pm   40

awesome idea PS3 –> PS3 copying data, but i need get my old backup PS3’s data from an external HD 🙁 . I can’t get my KZ2 savegame from the backup 🙁

Aggie_CEO 8 December, 2009 @ 3:20 pm   41

Does this work with Protected Saves as well? Such as Demon Souls & Killzone 2? PLEASE SAY YES!!!

Will the transfer util. copy the protected saves?
If not i have no use for it! We can already transfer the others.

greekgoddj 8 December, 2009 @ 3:22 pm   43

Great update! Both great ideas…Pity the transfer tech wasn’t available a month ago when I moved to a Slim PS3 and lost protected saved data such as Killzone 2.

saintaqua 8 December, 2009 @ 3:23 pm   44

Will this update come to the USA as well? I sure hope so!!!
I really wish that all PSP downloads would work on my PS3 as well!!!
But even being able to play the minis will be nice.

Gavin_Rozee 8 December, 2009 @ 3:24 pm   45

Seeing as Video Store content, and Singstar songs are licensed/activated only on the one PS3 they were purchased on, will doing this ethernet transfer also transfer the license to the destination PS3? It’s annoying having to phone Sony to request that your license be reset so that you can “activate” the license on a new PS3.

I believe many will appreciate an answer to this question.

lol. I wonder how many times people have asked for a utility to copy save-games to an external drive. You know – so you could backup your data easily, rather than going on a clicking spree (until you hit that copy-protected save). Not completely unlike the entire “take your memory card with you when you come over” thing that worked well on the ps2.

But no worries, you get this instead. :/

Specifically – you should be able to save your user’s save-files and replays quickly to a thumb-drive. Then drop those on a different ps3 under your local user-name. No account details, nothing like that, just the save-games, even the protected ones, under one particular account. Then, sync the saves, go home again, etc.

double_heist 8 December, 2009 @ 3:28 pm   47

Will the minis support trophies?

DarkStyler 8 December, 2009 @ 3:30 pm   48

Well one simple question and really James i would appreciate an answer .Next week i am going to buy a new ps3 slim 250 gb for my living room.I was going to back up my fat ps3 and recover everything on the slim. With out need it to erase everything on my fat one.So in other words why do i need to delete my stuff on my old ps3 with the new feature ?I mean i don’t buy one and sell the old i just need my stuff on all my ps3.If you get my point.

Thanks James.

    James Thorpe 8 December, 2009 @ 7:06 pm

If you back up to an HDD you will only be able to restore the content to the same PS3. I’m afriad in the data transfer you will only be able to have games, game saves and videos from the PSN on one console but you will be able to keep all your own photos, videos, etc on both consoles

TheNarrator 8 December, 2009 @ 3:31 pm   49

holy moly, this sounds like a great (and useful) update! 🙂

minis on PS3 is mega. some of the minis that get advertsied on the blog look like so much fun. cant wait to try some cheap, small, innovative ones through the PS3.

the data transfer thingy seems like a useful addition too. might make things easier anyway, which cant be bad 😀

Great idea for the data transfer. Will it also work with tracks bought in the SingStore for SingStar? Those are normally directly linked to the physical machine.

Solid_Snake1987 8 December, 2009 @ 3:31 pm   51

Wow. Two brilliant new features. Looking forward to being able to play the minis on my PS3 (my PSP is too busy with Disgaea :P) and it’s nice to know you can transfer data between PS3s if you need to. Great work guys! 🙂

Singstar content gets transfered with a full HD backup – I’ve done this twice now.

Majiinfreddy 8 December, 2009 @ 3:34 pm   53

That’s a first update in quite some time thats great and for once, usefull!!
Thank you Sony for your marvelous work <3

And, Give us X-chat 😉

Backup and restore only works on the same PS3 – i.e. when you install a new drive.

wow, man, this is a welcome welcome update, now I don’t have to redownload everything for the second ps3, great GREAT update 🙂

seb_grant 8 December, 2009 @ 3:37 pm   56

The data transfer isn’t actually going to be that useful in real-world terms. Most people that require this facility (me included) only do so because they have experienced the YLOD – this transfer is only any good if you have two WORKING Playstations.

Obviously these free updates are useful, but a better/faster/offsite backup facility would be more so.

Hi James, sounds like a great update to me as I’ve already bought quite a few PSP minis. I’m just wondering, if I play a mini on my PSP, will the save be transferable to the PS3, and vice versa? This is already possible when I play a PSOne Classic I downloaded from the PSN store on my PSP and PS3, so I’m hoping the minis emulator can do the same. If it can’t it’s no biggie but it’d be cool for games like Breakquest or Fieldrunners where I’ve unlocked a lot of the levels.

Hi James can you tell us if this fixes the sync problem with the bluetooth that many owners have been getting since update 3.10? Also why is this update an optional one if the answer is yes to the sync problems? Nice to see the transfer option allowing you to move the unmovable saves as well as copying others files to your second PS3, its a very nice touch!

keep up the good work!!

Smoutefretter_BE 8 December, 2009 @ 3:39 pm   59

The PS3 data transfer is a GREAT idea!
I really hope the new update finally takes care off the trophy synch problem. I hope it, because I still haven’t been able to update my trophies since the problem occurred. I can’t get any further then 10%.

Keep up the good work 😉

mentalmat93 8 December, 2009 @ 3:40 pm   60

@DF_2K9 – have you ever used twitter? 🙂

seriously though as a few people of said there is a browser to do that kind of thing; however i’m all for EVEN MORE FEATURES…

cross game chat , smb ‘samba’ network hard drive support (not just the already supported dlna/upnp media sharing) & itunes sharing/streaming support <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< these can be too hard for the firmware team to do, after all their open standards and dlan was easily incorporated….

baby steps as always for ps3 firmware upgrades
can you please tell me if there is more then one person working on these firmware updates, i can’t believe in all this time the ps3 exists, we still don’t have what we have been asking for, all updates are simply for Sony to milk us in every way possible or use us to advertise your games, it’s our turn now, throw us a bone please?

CartBlanche 8 December, 2009 @ 3:40 pm   62

1. Does this mean that other PSP games will be playable on the PS3 lie God of War : Chains of Olympus?

2. Are Sony planning on improving PS2 compatibilty support as well or just recreating all the PS2 games as HD versions?

3. Any news about a fix for the Trophy syncing error quite a few people are getting. My son’s gets to about 14% then gets a 8002804 error!

Looking forward to all the great exclusives next year!

Awesome! And I’m totally with #30:

Lol while i was reading rumours about this on another site i missed the announcement. 😀
This is awesome, thank you James and everyone at Sony who worked on this.
Some of those minis are seeming more attractive already, you crafty beggars 😉
I own 2 PS3s so the data transfer is going to be very useful.

I’m still hoping the browser has been tweaked….

TheFury01 8 December, 2009 @ 3:43 pm   65

I’d also like to know if you can transfer single protected game data from an old PS3 to your new one. My Killzone 2 data is stuck on my old one.

Hey James,

Since you guys are implementing a “mini’s emulator” of sorts, are you guys ever considering implemnenting either a ps2 or psp game emulator?

I’d love ta buy the gta psps games an play em on my ps3 personally.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Well, here we go again, with the LIST (in priority order):
– MKV Support
– Cross Game Voice Chat
– SkyPE Support
– (maybe?) PS2 support via some kind of an emulator?

Onna76_NL 8 December, 2009 @ 3:46 pm   68

Its an optional update so I don’t see the point for myself to download it until the next update. I assume these features will be included as well with the next update if you decide “not” to download 3.15?

Alonemusic 8 December, 2009 @ 3:47 pm   69

as someone who recently lost thier 60gb to a flashing light of doom, but luckily have a back up, i was distraught to find a lot of content (notably PS2 saves and a few ps3 save) had not restored. If I restore after this update will I get back me and my gf’s Persona saves?

Also neat on the Mini’s that makes them far more attractive, but I’d LOVE to see all PSP games on the ps3, that way I’d gladly part the cash for them (even some that I own on UMD!

betahoven 8 December, 2009 @ 3:48 pm   70

“we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December”

What does this mean? So not all minis will work when the firmware update is released?

Onna76_NL 8 December, 2009 @ 3:48 pm   71

And indeed, PSP + PS2 emulator on PS3 = Saint Sony!

Half-Mafia 8 December, 2009 @ 3:52 pm   72

i just got the new slim and was going to restore all my data onto the new slim.

but now ill wait for the update.

thanks again.

i dont know where i can request future feature but i would like just a simple feature. which is to beable to re-order my users. because ive got 5 users on my PS3 and im 4th, i would like to put my user account at the top.

Multinational business in ‘Only interested in making profit’ shocker!!!

*Rolls eyes*

A-N-O-T-H-E-R crappy update -_-, first of ALL fix the damn Sync problem with the Trophies and the “System Activation” Problem!!! After these problems add more features.

AoSora00005 8 December, 2009 @ 4:01 pm   75

The data transfer is a nice feature… It’s a pity they didn’t make it available when the slim came out as my 60Gb system died (permanently after the 4th repair) about a day after I got the new one (probably felt rejected). So even though I tried a backup / restore between the two boxes it did nothing. I managed to move my non-secure game saves but I lost 60 hours of demon souls and my killzone saves as they couldn’t be copied.

Lets hope this firmware fixes the problem with synchronising controllers and BD remote to PS3 slims.

I’m also getting some odd HDMI dropouts after the system has been on for about 5 hours+ in 1080p mode, since I swapped my 60gb fat for a slim so there are some definite issues with the new hardware, that needs sorting.

So no fix for the Controller Sync problem?

mcwildcard 8 December, 2009 @ 4:03 pm   77

Very useful update, I’ve no doubt it’ll come in handy for the future. When I went from 60GB to 80GB unit it was a massive pain to re-download everything, I’ll probably be upgrading to a slim in the next few months, so it’s a relief to know I won’t have to go through that all again!

Unfortunately the transfer utility is only useful as long as your old PS3 still works. Couldn’t you please include an option to create a complete backup on an external hdd which can be transferred to a new PS3 in case the old one dies? That would be so much more helpful.

Thank you for continuing to improve PS3!

Firmware updates almost ALLWAYS have hidden features not listed in the release notes.

Why not wait until AFTER the update is release and if the issues which nark you so much haven’t been rectified THEN have a moan.

Moaning in advance when you don’t know for sure whether or not something has been included in the update seems somewhat premature

Bavari_Erl 8 December, 2009 @ 4:05 pm   80

SONY! Please give us a very well working cross-over-voicechat. Than you will be on one level with your competitor.

Kenshin71 8 December, 2009 @ 4:07 pm   81

“So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content.”

Also this seems to be a tacit admission that the YLOD problem is more extensive than Sony let on. Sony should do the right thing and extend the warranty for 3 years or at least agree to fix YLOD consoles for free since it is a design flaw of the console.

thefirstassassin 8 December, 2009 @ 4:07 pm   82

Another C-R-A-P-Y Update -_-
You dont have any other work to do than putting unuseles features?
Try improving the Damn Errors (Trophy Sync and the God Damn System Activation Error).

SmoggyPhil 8 December, 2009 @ 4:09 pm   83 Cross Game Chat? No Trophy Sync Fix? But we get…….Minis and the opportunity to stream data from one PS3 to another but only if the first isn’t YLOD’d (Basically turning this into a dud unless for some reason you’re allergic to external HDDs)

The data transfer seems like a great new feature – not sure that PSP Minis are for me though…

More important to me is whether or not this new firmware update will fix the controller sync issues that I have been experiencing since updating to firmware v3.10?

mrfight67 8 December, 2009 @ 4:10 pm   85

vicentecarro 8 December, 2009 @ 4:11 pm   87

Maybe a “synchronize systems” option could be better than the “copy from” and “copy to” new features.
The idea is to have the newest data in both consoles, right? but sometimes you have a mixed set of old and new data(savegames mainly) in both consoles, so you will have to copy one by one and choosing the right direction for each of them(with the new feature) instead of just synchronizing both devices(just one step).
Just a suggestion.

DarkStyler 8 December, 2009 @ 4:11 pm   88

Hi james again

Once again the internet rumour factory came up trumps!!!

I think this is a great update as I’ve wanted both of these things to happen!!!!

Having Mini’s on PS3 is great as it gives PS3 owners access to cheap indie games, and makes getting a PSP a little bit more tempting if you already own games for it.

And the lack of data transfer was the one thing that was stopping me from upgrading my launch model to a Slim – I’m not going to be able to resist getting one now that you’ve made it so easy!

My 160GB upgraded HDD in my launch model is getting a little full, so I’m thinking a nice 250GB Slim will do the job, probably coinsiding with a game I was going to get anyway – a 250GB God of War III bundle perhaps?!

Thanks Sony!

betahoven 8 December, 2009 @ 4:17 pm   90

“Also this seems to be a tacit admission that the YLOD problem is more extensive than Sony let on.”

How? If you get a YLOD there’s nothing in this update that will help you.

SiRobertson 8 December, 2009 @ 4:18 pm   91

Suggestion for a future update: The ability to link photos on the PS3 to website forms thus allowing the upload of photos. So, you go to a site such as Twitpic (the upload page) and when the “Browse” button is clicked we get a list of the photos on our PS3.

Off-topic: The camera in Home is pants, the image quality of the photos is terrible and it takes way too long for the photos to be generated/saved.

theshepanator 8 December, 2009 @ 4:19 pm   92

Very good! Are there any other changes like bug fixes etc, or is this a feature adding update! It’s great that your adding loads of new features, ones that I hadn’t even thought of but still seem very useful thinking about it! Is there any way of stopping the grey screen inbetween the XMB and a game starting, even if the game is in the same resalution as the XMB I still get it. Also what about game DLC data transferring?

@ DarkStyler, copy-protected materials like games and some save files etc are locked to a specific PS3, so you can backup/restore to the same PS3 but not restore to a different PS3.

It makes sense if you think about it, otherwise pirates would simply be able to clone copy-protected content on PS3 after PS3.

You can still redownload content on up to 4 other PS3’s that are activated on the same user account though, so data transfer everything to your new PS3 and redownload the selected items you want to keep on your old PS3.

The new data transfer process won’t erase everything by the sound of it, only copy-protected materials that wouldn’t ordinarily be allowed to move PS3’s using the original backup process.

DarkStyler 8 December, 2009 @ 4:29 pm   94

Thanks alot Apnomis. Now i got it ^^
Generally good update (considering that each this kind of update it comes so close to each other) keep them coming guys.

I lost my KZ2 save a few months back & my TS1[PS2 game save] to 🙁
Wish you could just take out the Hard drive off your old PS3 & put it a New PS3 and it would have all your stuff on it. Good update tho 😉

Nice, Very needed update!

Good work. 😀

RadioactiveMouse 8 December, 2009 @ 4:44 pm   97

Some good and useful features. Nice to see it shaping up well. Does this fix the intermittent problem with controller sync in this update too?

Is there any option to share saves or data via wi-fi ? Lan is a little… old.. (but fast hey 🙂 )

lowrider007 8 December, 2009 @ 4:52 pm   99

Controller sync fix for the slims ?

And what about cross game chat? The only feature that matters!

xKillerMonkeyx 8 December, 2009 @ 4:57 pm   101

So i could buy a PSP mini and save it directly to PS3 and play it on PS3??

So you got an emulator running? But if it can run minis, why does it not also run regular psp games? The code of the regular games is the same, right? That would be even better!

The ps3 to ps3 backup is a handy feature I could have made use of a while back when I swapped my console for a new one. Great news – now it’s easier for me to swap over to a PS3 slim!

Michelasso 8 December, 2009 @ 5:01 pm   104

Could Sony just make a better backup utility where we select what to back up? Like the game saves only, for example. Seen the file transfer speed of the backup I don’t believe the PS3 sync will be much faster. It takes less time to redownload everything from the PS Store.

And then the synch will work for a second PS3 only. I want a way to backup and restore my locked gamesaves!

Will this erase the data on the older PS3?

I agree with 103, I don’t see why I can’t just back up the game saves instead of everything on the HD, I’m concerned about my Dragon Age save because it’s locked and if the HD corrupts or something I will have lost many hours of gameplay!

Same thing happened with my Godfather 2 game, my HD randomly corrupted one day and because I couldn’t back it up I lost about 80% of the game progress 🙁 Haven’t bothered starting it again.

@fcp10 by now you must understand that they can’t do it. They don’t have the skill to do that on the machine that only does (almost) everything….

Andy-McK-4ever 8 December, 2009 @ 5:28 pm   107

I don’t find this update very useful but I’m sure there are others who are thrilled by the Data Transfer feature. I must ask though, if you can implement a Minis emulator for the PS3, why don’t you implement a PS2 emulator? My PS2 died after 8 years of dedicated service and now I have no way to play any of the classic games such as Canis Canem Edit, the Jak series or the Ratchet and Clank series. Backwards compatability must be one of the most wanted features for the PS3. I’d even be willing to pay for the feature.

Yandoo_PT 8 December, 2009 @ 5:33 pm   108

i have bought a mini game via psstore on psp. can i transfer it to ps3 via USB?

daffycare 8 December, 2009 @ 5:38 pm   109

moving content from ps3 to another fantastic, i have 3 ps3 systems in my house so would i be able to move content on all 3 of them. thanks

is this just minis that are playable on the ps3 or can other psp titles be played?
if not when will we be able to play psp titles on ps3?
and that is being worked on right?

makingdamage 8 December, 2009 @ 5:51 pm   111

Will I need a psp to play the minis on my ps3? I aint got no psp…

rocca514 8 December, 2009 @ 5:59 pm   112

could we transfer exp:music mp3 files on another ps3 exp my freinds ps3 like msn…..and I would like that you could watch a movie on home with others friends…and of course CROSS GAME CHAT sorry but where always gonna ask ha!ha!ha!…

Solid-Snake-Eyes 8 December, 2009 @ 6:22 pm   113

I’d like to comment that an improved backup utility would be more useful to me than the transfer feature. I’d like a selective backup option, and a way to back up locked save files with the ability to restore them to another console. I’m afraid that if my old 60GB PS3 dies I’ll lose a lot of my save files forever due to the current restrictions. I thought that locked saves were becoming less common but the last two games I bought have them, argh!

I really like the data transfer. But I’m still missing two relatively simple features, both dealing with multiple accounts on a single ps3:

– make the parental control level a per-user setting. ie you can switch to a user with a higher level (more restrictions), but you need the (global) password/code tot switch back to a lower lever.

– make the system language a per-user setting. ie changing the user also changes the language.

That was unexpected but it’s a pretty good initiative, data transfer can be helpful. However I guess if our PS3 breaks, the Sony repair center wont do the transfer to the repaired PS3.

And I imagine this feature is limited by the number of activated consoles per account. Is there a non-telephonic way to deactivate a system? I have two PS3, the first one broke two times (and have been replaced two times) and the second one broke and have been replaced one time, so with 2 PS3 I already reached the maximum number of activated accounts.

Does the feature copy restricted savedatas as well? Such as for Tekken 5, for example, where we cannot copy our saves in a USB device.

3rd year anniversary came along, we got nothing, then the 15 year anniversary of the PlayStation brand came, we got nothing, Christmas is coming and i better be getting a damn present this year feature wise!!!
it’s not just HOME that is in beta, ps3 is in beta, trial and error all the time with these system updates im getting sick of it, updates to fix a previous update, but i get it, you guys want to stretch it for the 10 year life cycle

Robert-Ninja 8 December, 2009 @ 6:32 pm   117

The XMB should be fully independent from a game and be able to cross-game chat and play music while in-game and so on.

Please make this priority in next update. INDEPENDENT XMB

In short, will i be able to transfer my locked save files (such as Killzone 2) into a USB key?

zerolaff 8 December, 2009 @ 6:38 pm   119

Looks like I may finally be curious enough to buy some Minis.

Does mean someone would have the opportunity to install a larger hard drive by transfering data to a new ps3 swapping out the hard drive in the old ps3 and then tranferring it back.

I would love to know if this would work because i love all extra do das of the original 60 gig ps3 but the 60 gigs go so fast.

Finally a good update. Hope this won’t hurt my PS3 LOL

therobokid 8 December, 2009 @ 6:45 pm   122

Okay, so I have a really specific question:
I just bought a hard drive and transfered my PS3 using the backup utility into it so I could transfer it to a new PS3 slim I just received. However, all of my Rock Band data didn’t transfer, so I’ve had to re-download all of my DLC, and I’m trying to get my copy of Rock Band 1 back from a friend so I can do the song transfer. Unfortunately, all of my characters, scores, bands, etc… Still will be gone. Will this upcoming update allow a PS3 to PS3 transfer of locked games such as Rock Band/Guitar Hero, etc? I still have my old PS3, and it would be nice to know before I let the old one go if this is possible. If so, I could just wipe the new PS3 and all I would lose is my Uncharted 2 data, which of course I wouldn’t mind playing through again. Haha.

Shorter version: Will the new update allow locked games such as Rock Band 2 and all the data related to them to be transfered over to a new PS3, or will they still be locked to the old system? Thanks!

i’m not quite sure why you guys put all firmware updates optional, if i decided to update it and my console bricks on me, your not responsible? is that the reason of the optional upgrades?

BalramRules 8 December, 2009 @ 6:59 pm   124

When we transfer minis to our PS3, will they be available in HD?

BiosNova 8 December, 2009 @ 6:59 pm   125

Sorry but this is annoying, we want to be able to back up OUR save data in case our console breaks. I had havd to restart Street Fighter, Killzone 2 and i whole hosto f other games because we are not allowed to back up our OWN saves 🙁

Modster79 8 December, 2009 @ 7:01 pm   126

Nice update, however I still think you guys have to fix the Facebook/sub-account thing. I love it and works perfectly fine with my Master account, but my brother can’t use it on his sub-account…what is up with that?

Apart from that, keep up the good work and keep ’em coming!!

L337LUKE 8 December, 2009 @ 7:03 pm   127

I think this is a good function but like many others are saying we want rid of the protection on save data, it’s a bit of joke when it’s yours and your forced to leave it behind if you want to get a new PS3 or in some cases HAVE to get a new PS3.

So please Sony, get rid of it, it’s useless annoying and would also make this feature more plausible if it was removed.

ATIPdante 8 December, 2009 @ 7:05 pm   128

my ps3 is dead so i guess i cant copy the data to my new one 🙁
oh well will have to complete some games again haha no porbs they are all amazing 😀

TurboJonte 8 December, 2009 @ 7:08 pm   129

When will the PS3 support bluetooth file transfer? I want to send for example pictures taken with my mobile phone and view them with my PS3 without using DLNA.

Mok_ojin 8 December, 2009 @ 7:12 pm   130

Nice update sony. You pretty much killed any want I had of getting a pspmini now that they will play on ps3.

Now some more amiga stuff. 😀

Wery nice!, Many intresting games on “minis” I would love to play, but I have to admit that without trophie support I will not!, as I’m trophie addicted :P… So I really hope you will add support for that at some time, will definetly boost the sales as I suppose I’m not the only one addicted to trophies 🙂 – I hardly have time to play games where I can not get more trophies in!

vherostar 8 December, 2009 @ 7:16 pm   132

Since we can download PSP minis how about pixeljunk monsters deluxe? Will this work on PS3 now?

gleitkomma 8 December, 2009 @ 7:17 pm   133

Sorry I don’t understand this firmware update. Who needs a copy from one ps3 to another when the content will gets deleted on the first ps3 after copy?
Seriously I have 2 ps3’s a fat 60gb and a slim. What I want is a simple copy action of all/selectable content from one ps3 to the other and vice versa. E.g. Savegames etc. Cause sometimes I play in the living room and sometimes in my computer room. Both rooms have their own ps3. Both are connected via wlan. I mean the best thing would be a online storage possibility for savegames. So they are secured even on a harddisk crash. I mean one simple upload like for the trophies would be enough and updating only on request not automatically.
But why should I want to delete the stuff as well on my first ps3 only to have it on my second? Cause this really isn’t well thought. I want to have my bought games and content on all my owned ps3 without to download it again over the internet. I want the possibility to play here and there with the same savegame or have a easy possibility to copy it over e.g. share it between my owned ps3’s. It could be a simple sharing in the same subnet like a normal windows share. cause the copy action with usb devices isn’t up to date in current times.

Pure_Mind_Games 8 December, 2009 @ 7:29 pm   134

I noticed about SingStar you said “provided the songs are still on the store” if people have paid for the songs wouldn’t taking them away essentially be stealing? sure 1 or 2 songs probably no one would care much after all it’s only £1 – £2 but if 100 people bought that song(s) it’s £100 – £200 in your pocket, sure you’ve already spent it but it’s like we just gave you the money for nothing, I see a lot of pissed off people in your future

Splutterbug 8 December, 2009 @ 7:35 pm   135

meh let me know when PS2 emulation comes around, yeah I know it won’t happen due to the amazingly hypocritical statement from Sony about players having no interest in OLD games, oh and btw here’s FFVII

SeraphicRav 8 December, 2009 @ 7:37 pm   136

I’d like to see some extension of the PS3 to PS3 transfert like PS3 to PC using NFS (as Network File System not Need for Speed) or something like this because I am tired of using an USB key to transfert the video from the store to my PC.

Something working with Linux too.

NightCrawler-672 8 December, 2009 @ 7:39 pm   137

The data transfer utility CANNOT be used to move copy-protected saves !!! I was really excited when I first read about this feature BUT it has been confirmed (see response to post #6) that you will not be able to copy over protected saves to another PS3.

So basically, yet another useless update. Great job Sony – I guess thats why its optional.

Bahamut44-4 8 December, 2009 @ 7:40 pm   138

The data transfer update looks sweet. Shame im not gonna bother with any minis. They dont cost much less then standard PSN games and they lack trophies or any online components. But great for those who have been wanting to try miniS.

Please Lord tell me we are getting some new avatars PLEASE.

Brokenbricks 8 December, 2009 @ 7:46 pm   139

Looks like Santa is coming early this year!

Good work guys, lovin the enthusiam and momentum for PS3 at the mo, keep it up!

The transfer feature sounds nice. I also got a slim PS3 in addition to the old model, but I still use them both – on separate places. A feature I would really like to have is the possibility to sync save-games using PSN. At the moment I have to copy my save-games from one PS3 to an USB stick, carry the stick with me, and then to copy from the USB stick to the other PS3, and I have to manually keep track where I have which version of the save-games. This could be handled much nicer if some sync feature for save-games would be integrated in PSN.

MOONDOG-R-I-P 8 December, 2009 @ 7:47 pm   141

this is a cover up software update add a couple of little features that was planned for future updates make it optional and all of a sudden the people with bluetooth problems on the web have the magic fix (and sony dont have to admit to anything) and for people asking for other features wait for the payed for/overhaul of the service next year

AnimaOnline 8 December, 2009 @ 7:51 pm   142

Can I freely copy any pictures files or save files I want with this or is it strictly everything or nothing?

Sounds like a fantastic feature. Good work. 🙂

NightCrawler-672 8 December, 2009 @ 7:55 pm   143

You CANNOT move COPY-PROTECTED SAVES !!! Check post #6

Goaliegeek 8 December, 2009 @ 7:58 pm   144

Oh come on. We can’t do copy protected saves? This is ridiculous. The protected saves should have been tied to your PSN account. I got so far in Rock Band 2 on my 20GB, then it died. I eventually fixed it, but have a Slim. All that time, wasted. Come on Sony. Talk to devs and change the stupid copy protection. Kinda lame a hard transfer from one PS3 to another can’t do the copy protection saves. No middle man there. It’s a secure transfer. So excited thinking I could transfer my RB2 save, then I saw the reply. Damn.

Can you guys please fix the word “loose.” You meant to write “lose.” It’s not that serious, it just bothers me excessively.

vicheous 8 December, 2009 @ 7:59 pm   146

Only func. i want is to backup protected saves have a few games with that now! Think 1 trophy from plat. and oh now PS3 broke and thoose games can’t be backed up! SILLY!

You should be able to use it and backup on activated PS3 at least when they are connected via LAN cable…

Prem-aka-Prince 8 December, 2009 @ 8:02 pm   147

Hey thanks for that, looks good. I like how you kindly told different people the same thing^^ Probably because most don’t bother to read replies that aren’t to their own post xD Hopefully one day publishers or game developers will drop the protected saves- either that or some kind of online save utility tied to your account! My PS3 broke and with it went my KZ2 progress, most importantly including my nearly complete ‘elite’ difficulty play… but allll my multiplayer stuff was there, kind of gutting considering how I didn’t really care for it! What’s the point in ‘updating your progress to the servers’ if it doesn’t get stored, was my thought >< Oh well not your fault, have a nice day!

cglin979 8 December, 2009 @ 8:06 pm   148

So does the ps3 to ps3 transfer also be able to transfer/copy a copy restricted game saves and such, I hope it can, cause this has been a big headache for me…

Fiks1one 8 December, 2009 @ 8:07 pm   149

woot 😀 that’s really cool with the minis!:)

I’m sorry James, and I know that it’s not your fault this.
But without any way of transfering copy protected saves, this firmware update is more or less useless, sure it’s nice to be able to copy some stuff over to a friends’ console, but many of the games now are tied to one console because of the copy protection and that’s the main issue with this, not the connectivity over a direct cable.

I think the best firmware update that could possibly happen right now is to move the copy protection from a specific console serial number to the PSN id – that way publishers would still have the same “protection” they have now against people copying save games between people – but if my PS3 would break, I wouldn’t lose all my progress in many of the games.
Do you know if people higher up are aware of this? It feels like the implementation succeeded to listen to the publishers, but not to the gamers (which also are the customers in this case).
There must be a solution that can fit both parties here.

my-kal_UK 8 December, 2009 @ 8:09 pm   151

all i wanna know is, will the bluetooth issue with ps3 slim’s be fixed??

Come on :-/ Why can’t i move my Killzone 2 save to a new PS3 in the Future for? Copy protected saves should be stopped really. I lost my Killzone 2 save months back because i could not back it up to a Memory card :-/ [I saved all my other saves tho, thank god]

SmokeNMirrors 8 December, 2009 @ 8:16 pm   153

“This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another.”

It appears they have a different definition of “ALL” then what’s given in any dictionary. The transfer feature seems mostly useless…

Why does it delete source game data prior to transfer? This is idiotic! So the procedure will really be: 1) Backup PS3-A to external hard drive 2) Transfer PS3-A to PS3-B 3) Restore PS3-A from backup

Why does it require a LAN cable, what if both my PS3’s are already on the same LAN via Wifi? (or cable for that matter) Dumb!

It won’t copy protected game saves or DLC so we might as well just keep using USB sticks and redownloading from the internet…

The PSP Mini’s on the PS3 seems nice but why not all PSP games? Are they afraid of actually selling software? It’s not like they make money on PSP hardware anyway…

lord_ashour 8 December, 2009 @ 8:21 pm   154

So if I transferred my saves from old PS3 to new PS3, will I be able to earn trophies using my existing saves or will I need to make new saves on my new PS3 to enable trophies?

davidjs_uk 8 December, 2009 @ 8:23 pm   155

Will the data transfer work over a LAN or do the two systems have to be directly connected?

Those of us with more than one system could do with some kind of LAN synchronisation utility to keep each machine up to date. Sometimes I want to continue a game upstairs and can’t due to locked saves etc.

I don’t mean to sound negative but this update is very disappointing! Why have Sony made it so difficult to back up your machine?

I have had one PS3 die on me already taking with it any locked game saves, (Killzone 2) I had a backup of the machine but when you try to restore it does not restore any of the locked saves.

Sony you really need to sort this out, why does the new transfer function have to delete the content from the original machine. I really don’t mind if game saves are locked but surely they should be locked to the user ID? You should still be able to copy them, so if I had two machines in one house as long as the PSN ID was the same they would work on either.

Why does this new transfer not transfer locked games, don’t say it’s the publishers wish. Sony you write the operating system, make it transfer them.

Why do you never listen to your customers, the people that are actually buying your products and keeping you employed!!

JediUrchin 8 December, 2009 @ 8:25 pm   157

Why do people feel the need to post the same question over and over again? Can you lot asking about copying save games not read?? Nice touch with the minis though, Some of them are quite cool 😀

Tristan88888888 8 December, 2009 @ 8:35 pm   158

my question. when transferring save data to a new ps3, do you need to delete it on the other account. can we start tethering save data to our psn accounts like on the xbox. i want to be able to move from ps3 to ps3 on the same save file.

Sambuque 8 December, 2009 @ 8:35 pm   159

What’s the point of the transfer utility if you can’t transfer all your game save ?

Can I transfer my user accounts to a new ps3 aswell?

funkpower 8 December, 2009 @ 8:39 pm   161

Oh, this is for the Yellow Light Of Death is it? Shame you didnt release this when I had the YLOD and purchased a slim!

CinderShadow 8 December, 2009 @ 8:53 pm   162

That’s really great that Minis can soon be enjoyed on PS3, too. 🙂

waltyftm 8 December, 2009 @ 9:00 pm   163

xXAirForceOne 8 December, 2009 @ 9:07 pm   164

And now? Where is the Cross-Game-Chat?

madmonkey01 8 December, 2009 @ 9:08 pm   165

thanks for your reply,

“you can’t directly transfer SingStar DLC but you can re-download the tracks on the new PS3 provided they are still available on the store. That should get most of them back and get you some brownie points!”

do i have to delete them off the old ps3? at the moment when i try to redownload the songs i get a message about them already been downloaded and i should check the usage rights.

Ivan_Krazy 8 December, 2009 @ 9:13 pm   166

Useless if my old PS3 dies! Update sounds pretty cool though! Minis sound meh, don’t use my PSP anymore, if they are priced REASONABLY then I will pick a few.

So if the protected saves cannot be copied over, can there at least be a system put into place where you could link the save to your PSN ID and to use it you have to log in to the PSN to verify yourself or something, allowing backups that will only work for yourself?

I don’t want to whine lol but this is essentially the only thing stopping me from upgrading to a PS3 slim.

scepterone 8 December, 2009 @ 9:19 pm   168

My question on transfering my saved games info and other stuff, will I need to delete that information from one PS3, or can the information be on both?

Ivan_Krazy 8 December, 2009 @ 9:24 pm   169

I am absolutely against the so-called copy protected game saves, SONY can set rules to the publishers/developers. ‘One step forward, three steps back’ is Sony’s new slogan. If xbox 360 can set requirements for games why can’t Sony? Sony is simply too slow on everything, 3 years later Sony implements the xbox 360 achievements system, slow eh? Another 20 more years until we see the in-game music across the whole PS3 system and in-game chat

I am still waiting for any method, how to tranfer protected saves (only) from between my two PS3s. As I travel during my job, I play on both during the week, depending where I am.

For the last time I play only games with not protected saves, because I cannot enjoy the game if I cannot play it continuosly. Direct tranfer is not bad option in case you move to new PS3, but in all other cases it is useless.

If there is a fear of game creators for copying saves, there is always trophy-lock to PSN account (so other lock is for what?), but there should be help from SONY at least, something like “MOVE” function for such a protected saves. May be online user-storage (~20MB or 1 save limit) for moving/export saves in (remove from 1st console) and import for the 2nd system.

No major features in this FW for me, I can miss it 🙁

will9509 8 December, 2009 @ 9:32 pm   171

alright update even though i probably won’t use back up save transfer. Now its the most wanted thing so just give us CROSS GAME CHAT!!!!!!!!!!!

Will the Visual Player get an update in the near-future (ie Music Visualisation)?

dannykiid2k9 8 December, 2009 @ 9:53 pm   173

why dont ye bring out A PS2 Emulator Firmware Update =[

hows about fixing the video output to hdmi and component at the same time.
im sick of changing the options for different tvs.

Hello –

I am thinking of buying a PS3 Slim, but I do not play video games. I plan on using it as a Blu-Ray and media player. My alternative was to buy a Blu-Ray player and separate media play like the WD TV Live. My kids have a lot of movies that they watch and the dvds end up getting scratched up. I would rather store our movies, music files, etc on an external HD drive and use the media play features of the PS3. I have numerous live music files stored in the FLAC format. Will the PS3 ever support that? How does the PS3 rate as a media player? What enhancements are planned for the 3.20 firmware update?

Thank you

Roxas598 8 December, 2009 @ 10:20 pm   176

Why the Ethernet thing

Its useless 😐

how’s about letting us use the XMB while on the store

Wheeljack2k 8 December, 2009 @ 10:27 pm   177

Now if you were able to take the hard drive from a dead PS3, put it into an external case and plug it into a USB-port of the new PS3 to transfer your data – THIS would be really helpful.

On the other hand… still no word about a bluetooth-fix?
Need to keep nagging until there is an answer :p

Rude_Sparthan 8 December, 2009 @ 10:30 pm   178

I hope that “80022A07” will be fix.. 😉

will Minis output in 1080i and 1080p if not why? its really bad that most games on PS3 dont output in these resolution
じゃ おねがいします

As an owner of two PS3s, I would really like you to expand this feature into a synchronization between 2 PS3s. That would take away the headache of having to backup the PS3 occasionally and keeping game saves synched via memory cards back and forth. And backup my PS1 and PS2 gamesaves too!

It’s a step in the right direction, just keep going with this. I want a house full of networked PS3s that “Do Everything”.

Pure_Mind_Games 8 December, 2009 @ 10:47 pm   181

have you not been reading? it will not transfer copy protected saves

When is Cross game voice chat coming?!

When will the web browser improve?

Witwasser 8 December, 2009 @ 10:52 pm   183

They are holding the Cross Game Voice Chat feature back. It will be available with the paid subscription service, mark my words.

milnerant 8 December, 2009 @ 10:54 pm   184

I’m guessing if you get YLOD, this new update feature is useless :P.

WOW!! the data transfer sounds awesome! pity it wasnt around when the slim launched and many of us bought our 2nd PS3’s 😉
i do have a question, with games and game saves, is there a way to transfer just 1 at a time? i think that is what i find most frustrating now that i have 2, i have to download everything twice. also are there any plans to make this transfer a little easier? i was thinking maybe transferring over the network.
congrats on implementing such a great feature!!

GiorgosGrx 8 December, 2009 @ 10:56 pm   186

so i’m just adding to the voices asking for twitter, cross game voice, better web experience-browser for ps3 and psp, cheaper prices on digital content(see UMD’S compared to digital!).
Sort out these deleting not deleting data on different systems. Just make a proper backup thing!
Keep the firmwares coming, i’m disappointed because of the decline of playstation.

Brk3nHalo 8 December, 2009 @ 11:01 pm   187

This data transfer sounds sweet, but a couple of questions questions:

“Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3.”

1) I have 2 PS3s, is it possible to transfer saved games from one to the other using this method without deleting the originals or am I stuck doing it manually still?

2) Do they have to be directly connect in order for this to work or is over wired LAN unacceptable? What about WiFi?

siredward 8 December, 2009 @ 11:10 pm   188

Each new game that I buy with copyprotected gamesaves brings me one new step further away from buying a slim. And i actually want one. The new feature is useless until it can solve this.

I’ve tried to find where to submit feedback for wanted features of my PS3 fw, but have yet not been able to find anything other than this blog.
So I’ll drop a few wishes here and hope you can answer me if I should continue here or put more elsewhere.
Password protected user accounts – As a parent, I want to keep my account away from my children who have created their own (with their own themes and PSN accounts). I want to set my account with full access but limit the childrens accounts with different age limits (so they must be protected by passwords too). A pain to change parentel level every time you want to use the system.
(Yes, I know kids will regard me as a bore by now)
Dissapointing to find out that my PS3 didn’t play HD files from my SONY Video camera HDR-CX105E when saved to a NAS. They play well when Camera is connected via USB port (and a beauty to navigate compared to on-screen).
Pls add support for more HD fileformats (at least those used by your own products)
Any chance of getting BRAVIA Sync on a pre-slim model (160GB)?
Any chance of getting SACD support (as was on 60GB model) and DVD-Audio?
And VidZone with HD videos and multichannel sound?
PSN in 1080p? (at least videos shown various places in PSN)

Hi, I am confused now about the HDD backup and the comment on only being able to restore to the same PS3. I use an external HDD and run the normal backup option, keeping this in case my PS3 dies. If I bought a new one I was under the impression I could restore from my HDD backup to the new PS3 without any issues. I understand the problem with the protected game files, but excluding those, are you saying I will be unable to restore everything else to a new PS3 by simply using the restore option ?.

kratos3681 8 December, 2009 @ 11:57 pm   191

What would be really nice is to be able to access my saved games from over the network. I use 4 PS3s (Living room, theatre room, office, and bedroom) and it’s always a pain to get a USB drive, copy a save, bring it to another PS3, copy it to the PS3 and then repeat the process again. How hard would it be for the PS3s to see another PS3 on the network??

bigdaveg 9 December, 2009 @ 12:25 am   193

This update is useless due to the fact that most people needing to get a 2nd ps3 are doing so by having to get a reconditioned one from Sony for a rip off of almost £130. By this time the old one has died of ylod and as such cannot be used to transfer the data! (Talking from recent personal experience here guys so no I’m not an xbox lover or anything)

It would be much better to devise a way of retrieving your data from a previously used ps3 internal harddrive by simply taking it out and plugging it into the new one. (Even if only your unprotected personal data could be read such as photos etc)
This way, ps3 owners would only have to back up data protected content such as game saves and drm stuff like singstar etc. Other stuff can be re-downloaded from the store if buying a new ps3. Hope this is read by Sony as this issue has really frustrated me over the last seven days and I now face a ps3less x-mas!!!!!!

Dante_Zero 9 December, 2009 @ 12:30 am   194

will mini’s have mini trophys if they are being made ps3 compatible and does this mean psp will have a trophy system?

bigdaveg 9 December, 2009 @ 12:30 am   195

minis might be good though if they look ok on big screen (and I get ps3 fixed)!!!

ALADDINSANE1984 9 December, 2009 @ 12:33 am   196

hi james thorpe, sorry not going to ask if i can copy protected game save data, but wether or not there are any plans to add any new music background visuals, the earth one is absolutely amazing, the other two not so, but it would still be great to have a new one though.
also i enjoy the “life with playstation” app will there be any new channels in the future?
thanks and merry christmas

The data transfer option is pretty redundant. it does not do anything an External HDD can’t. In the case of replacing a broken PS3, any protected data backed up should be recoverable to a new PS3 and re-registered once logged into the network, in a similar fashion to Xbox Live.

surely there are legal issues around the availability of Music Game tracks, if they are not available for re-download, can the user receive a refund for the lost tracks? Probably an issue for the publisher more than Sony though.

Smegzilla 9 December, 2009 @ 12:45 am   198

Pretty useless if you can’t backup your copy protected saves in any way whatsoever. What’s the use in using the backup utility to back them up to the same PS3?

I don’t back up my PC, delete all the data and then put the data back from my backups, that’s just stupid. I back it up in case of emergency and that I need to back up onto a new one. Same with PS3. The inability to backup copy protected save files is ridiculous and shouldn’t exist in the first place.

Capcom undid copy protected saves when lots of people complained, and rightly so. Sony shouldn’t allow copy protecting of save files. So some saves get passed around, who is it hurting? Nobody? Thought as much.

Bloody_Marcel 9 December, 2009 @ 12:49 am   199

James Thorpe is wrong about copy protected saves.

It’s true they can’t be copied. But they can be MOVED (as in, they are copied on the new system and deleted from the previous one) via the new back up functionality.

Kibagami_Jubei 9 December, 2009 @ 1:00 am   200

not being able to backup ur hard earned “copy protected” gave saves and old downloads not available anymore in the psn store, makes this LAN “data transfer” really a “partial data” xfer and useless. Its ur PS3 and u should control where and what u do with any data. until then, this just eliminated the HDD for a back up!!!! what if i buy 3 more PS3’s and i want all of them to be able to have the exact same downloads, games saves etc? ill tell u what, ill stick with 1 ps3! and HOPE I DONT get the yellow ring of death again! Dont get me wrong, i love Sony and the PS3, but this has to be corrected if Sony cares about its core consumer.

gatormatt 9 December, 2009 @ 1:03 am   202

Just throwing that out there.

playstion3man 9 December, 2009 @ 1:53 am   205

@201 yea I would pay for online storage. Even tho the download quota would kill me. I have lost my saves way to much due to dead ps3s.

I am sorry, but the Idea of loosing Savegames and Contend that i have payed for dos not sound like a “next gen” concept to me. – I can still play my old game cardriges today and i would like my PS3 games and DLC contends to do just as good in the far future.

DRM *****!

Gameboys 9 December, 2009 @ 3:03 am   207

another top on my wishlist, is a function that copies every savedata (which is not protected) with a push of a button! something like: “save all to ‘usb’?” … will we get this – someday?

TheRealAlpha2 9 December, 2009 @ 3:45 am   208

This back up feature isnt really all that helpful unless you have TWO PS3s at the same time.

What we really need is a way to back up our files to a new HD if you upgrade from a smaller drive to a larger one. If I’m going from a 120gb drive to a 320gb drive there’s no way to perform this. it potentially forces you to re download possibly a 100gbs of data from the PSN store. THIS what they need to create a feature for.

Or better yet a way for anyone that has a system die on them and needs to rescue their data from the harddrive because when they fix or refurbish your system it wont recognize your old data. WHen My PS3 Yellow lighted It wouldnt start up again and All my data on the hard drive was lost even though I’d done a back up. I had to spend a week re-downloading all my games, installs and DLC because there was no way to use the data on the drive I already had after I sent in my PS3 to be fixed/refurbished.

edwinluo_usa 9 December, 2009 @ 4:31 am   209

Controller issue fixed ????? Come on , do some QA test before release, OK ?!

This is BS- Why does SONY ignore serious problems and give us ”new features” that most people couldn’t care less about? How about answering people with real issues and not just people that praise you for all the new stuff?

THIS IS RIDICULOUS SONY! Fix your foul-up!

It_is_Me_iT 9 December, 2009 @ 4:45 am   211

+1 Help out those with YLOD sony should offer to transfer all your data to the repaired/referbed system for an added fee or included with the 150 they already charge you I know id pay for it rather then loosing all my game saves which i did when my 60 gig YLOD twice in the past 6 months stop hurting the early adopters and help us out sony

artchangel_tyral 9 December, 2009 @ 6:03 am   214

Will this new update fix the trophy-sync? Since I cant sync them at all right know.

muzzar69 9 December, 2009 @ 6:23 am   215

so will this fix the sync issues im having since the 3.10 update?
i rang customer support and as usual they just acted dumb and pretended its not happening.
i did not pay 100 bucks for a wired controller, if i wanted that i could of bought a $10 PS2 adapter and used that.
ive got a good mind to go back to EB and demand my money back since im not getting what i paid for.

you always answer “No, copy protected save data can not be transfered due to publisher’s requirements”.
I doubt the requirement is to stick the save to one dedicated PS3 but I assume that the requirement is to protect it from manipulation?
The way it is right now may fit the requirement of the publisher (which I doubt, see above) but it does NOT fit the requirement of me as a gamer, namely to play my current game states on any PS3 I choose.
Sony should seriously rethink their design, as there are solutions where you can have both requirements.
Pleas elaborate.

I am getting the same bluetooth synchronization problem too!!! I got the slim and I have been experiencing it since 3.10 firmware.

Great update. I assume this is emulating the PSP in someway… makes me wonder if emulating the regular PSP Games is something Sony is considering.

We know the PSP Hardware sells really well, but the software not so well, for reasons i won’t mention here. But we don’t know if that would change, wonder if sony would be willing to take that risk to allow PS3 owners to buy the PSP games and play them on their console?

Hi James great update for starters, I was wondering why do you even allow the developers to copy protect their saves in such a way that when your PS3 fails (I’ve had this) and you want to backup all your data, it just refuses because of this protection on the saves?

I lost my Killzone 2 save, which was right at the moment that the end boss comes from behind his protected area, due to this mechanic.

I can’t describe the amount of frustration that lead me to not even start up this game ever since. 🙁 All the accomplishments and positives of the single player campaign were for nothing because I painfully couldn’t back up the save and after sending in my machine (for the second time!) I got another refurbished PS3 back, which meant formatting the HD that I used in my previous unit and loosing that save game.

Please remove the copy protection, or find a better backup scenario… like zip the whole shebang to an encrypted file that can be decrypted by another PS3 for restore.

Does this also give the possibility for copying all (not protected) save games to external HDD / usb-stick in one click instead of selecting all save games one by one?

weaselEST 9 December, 2009 @ 7:35 am   221

Will you be adding support for example for 127kbps mp3 audio? At the moment PS3 can only play 96, 128, 256 etc bps mp3 audio.

xenokiller90 9 December, 2009 @ 7:35 am   222

That’s a fine updates mini’s are soooooooooo cool will there be any sort of related trophy system for minis?

Yeah add support for savegame encryption in the FW/Devkit so the developers doesn’t have to invent that for every game and we gamers can backup all our saves (so that we can buy a new PS3 and transfer our saves when our old PS3s break down).
Also, you’ve got to be kidding about bought Singstar songs no longer being available for download!!?! When I payed for my songs it clearly said _BUY_, not play/rent/lease/licence etc…

Now that we can play Minis on the PSP emulator, how long till we can play all PSP games on it? And when can we expect to play PS2 games on the PS2 emulator? 😉

MavSkipper 9 December, 2009 @ 9:09 am   224

NICE!!! I can finally give my 4GB+ video files to my brother.

Hello James,
this new update is nice and all but i still can’t sync my trophys.
So it would be nice if Sony listens to their costumers because i have this trophy problem for over 2 months now!!
I’m a big Playstation fan and never want anything else but i have to say (with pain in my heart!) that Xbox achievements are way better and faster when you sync them.
So 3.15 will fix this problem right?

Thanks in advance,

What’s the point if copy-protected save files are not included in the transfer. It’s this that keeps me from buying a 250 GB PS3. If the files on the original PS3 are deleted, why aren’t these protected saves copied? The rest we can already backup to an external HDD or flash drive.

CoolTails 9 December, 2009 @ 9:37 am   227

If someone could explain how this is at all useful or better than than the backup option thats already there, then i’d appreciate it,cos i can’t find any logic or sense in this as an update at all.

Also what is the point of psp minis by remote play, isn’t the psp go,with its 16GB and normal psp’s meant to do this standalone anyway??

Unless theres some background stuff going on that is building on this foreground stuff is just ,well, useless to most people.

Chappers 9 December, 2009 @ 10:01 am   230

Out of interest, if one happens to have 2x PS3s and they are on the same Home network, will this feature allow the two PS3s to transfer data between them that way, or do you have to do a direct LAN-to-LAN hook-up?

And if not, could that be added? For example, if I have various files/music/video/games etc. on my downstairs PS3, could I access or transfer it to an upstairs PS3?

Don’t want to sound greedy, but it’s just a thought…

WAIT A MINUTE! James please can you clarify your earlier replies – what do you mean it can’t transfer copy-protected data? [DELETED] is the point of the utility if it does nothing more than the old backup/restore option?!

I just want to MOVE my content from an old PS3 to a new PS3 – I don’t want to COPY anything, so I don’t see why COPY-protection should be an issue!!! It makes no sense – this process should simply populate the new HDD and delete it off the old HDD – what is the harm in that? Even if it was a separate option that populates the new PS3 with content/settings that are identical to the source PS3 and then completely formats and resets to factory defaults the source PS3 – same user, one set of content, just a different PS3 – no harm, no foul.

I want to give Sony my money to buy a new Slim, I really do, but I am NOT prepared to lose the games, content, downloads and saves I’ve amassed over the last 2.5 years. All I want to do is MIGRATE my data – this really shouldn’t be an issue with anyone – no copying involved, just a simple move of data.

Until Sony allows this I will be sticking with my Fat PS3!

Copy-protected game saves or profiles on my PS3:
Brain Challenge, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Crash Commando, Dynasty Warriors Empires, High Velocity Bowling, Killzone, Locoroco Cocorecho, Lord of the Rings Conquest, Namco Museum Essentials, Red Faction Guerilla, Smackdown vs Raw 2010, Tomb Raider Underworld, Wheelman

They are good ideas but what are the chances of a person having their old and new PS3 at the same time? Ususally people trade in their old in exchange for new.

The transfer option seems a little superfluous seeing as it does what can be already done with an external hard drive and a USB cable.
This whole method with PS3 A to a TV and then PS3 B to a TV seems a little long-winded with something you can do with the ‘copy’ function in the ‘Game Save Data’ folder.

Any right-minded person with a PS3, PC or any other console should already have an external HD with their precious game data backed up on it, I know I do.

And if you can’t transfer over copy-protected data, then whats the point? I worked really hard on Resident Evil 5 and I still have a few trophies left to get, and it can’t be transfered.

Anyway, the Minis idea is a good one, I like how the gap between PSP and PS3 is being bridged by such ideas.

“Specifically – you should be able to save your user’s save-files and replays quickly to a thumb-drive.”

unfortunately, we will probably never get such a feature, sony is only interested in giving us useless features that are a waste of space to install. this is the number one feature that would be actually USEFUL for the ps3 users it’s tedious having to backup each save file one by one especially if you have around 50 games like i do, it becomes very tedious, that ethernet thing is exactly the same as the backup data utility it’s completely useless, i bet you cannot transfer game data and game updates to the new ps3. something the backup utility fails to do.

oh and people stop supporting developers who lock their gamesaves on your console, just do not buy their games! i know i will not, i already lost street fighter 4 data and resident evil 5 data because of copy protection!

Sorry but I still only care about x game chat.
Also if I cannot transfer my protected saves I will not be getting a slim, too much time lost…sort it out please!

Sevus_DK 9 December, 2009 @ 1:12 pm   243

I still got issus with my PS3 slim doing playback. It play and pause in 1 sec. doing Blu-ray, DVD and film media files.

Games run like a charm funny enough.

But, yea this 2 new feats sound good to me.

vicheous 9 December, 2009 @ 1:17 pm   244

I wanna backup protected saves…
I hope the PS3 get’s a Hacked custom fw soon that let’s us do this.
(I’ll be happy to test it).

Could not care less about anything else.. Full backup should have been there from the begining what a joke! Probably over 60% of PS3 owners have lost saves due to copy prot.

1-2 trophys from plat. and you get a YLOD then you have to start the game over again!! Or power out while saving, save failed and you have to start the game from scratch… 🙁

RuskiDubh 9 December, 2009 @ 1:19 pm   245

Can’t you already do this with the existing backup/restore utility? Loads of people have upgraded their hard drive and providing it’s performed on the same PS3 there’s no issues accessing copyright saves etc.

Agree that this update for transferring between PS3’s is relatively useless tough. I don’t understand why if I move my hard drive to another PS3 I loose all the copy-protected stuff.

gr0undp0und 9 December, 2009 @ 1:33 pm   246

@241 you can do this by clicking on system settings.

funnydude6556 9 December, 2009 @ 1:38 pm   248

Awesome and better late then never if anything. I like the idea of the minis on the PS3 now the next time i buy myself a £20 game card i’ll download one of these. I haven’t said it before so i’ll say it now thanks SCEE for bringing us the PSN cards,

I’ve spent £40 so far on them as their better then the microsoft points or the nintendo points, i like how while nintendo and microsoft hide behind points that sony come right out and tell us how much money the Downloadable Content cost, it comes across as proof as the companies honesty and is something that’s always convinced me to buy the PSN cards over the other two.

The reason i bring this up now is becasue i’m been complaining a lot and i know i don’t mention when the SCEE get things right so it’s only fair that i do. This update is awesome (TBH i wouldn’t use cross game chat anyway as none of my friends have a PS3).

Why exactly does any game, bloody any game have copy protection? Geez! All it does is hinder our ability to backup our precious gamesaves properly. I personally am not interested in downloading other people’s gamesaves to unlock and cheat on trophies, but there is a solution to that… rather than affect everyone, Sony should be coming up with solutions that only affect those who cheat trophies (like how about a search system that seeks out when a player’s profile has several trophies unlocked at the same time/date stamp, indicating they’ve cheated their trophies, and send them a PSN message asking them to explain).

Just when i think an answer to my problem (forgive me for wanting to actually BUY another PS3! I wanna get a Slim, and move my phat to my bedroom, but wanna transfer EVERYTHING over to the slim.. and Sony is limiting me from doing that, even after this 3.15 update comes out) For godsakes, please atleast convince Guerilla to patch their game so gamesaves are free from this bullsh#t that is copy protection. Same goes for the music games etc.

Ohh and does the transfer feature atleast work over a standard network hookup? Or does the PS3s HAVE to be hooked up directly? I’ve got both my PS3s hooked up to the same modem/router, and will upgrade the link to a gigabit switch eventually. It would be awesome if there was any network features between PS3s on the same network.. things like streaming off the others hard drive for things like movies, music and PlayTV recordings.

@ Vorlon: I know. But he’s wrong.

iv heard that u will be able to copy protected files also I am shocked that they are telling ppl no here, that it swhont be possible as I have it from a reliable source that this was the whole point of it, to safe gaurd the downloading of them onto a USB stick and then selling them on ebay so they came up with the idea of allowing ps3 to ps3 file swap instead…..

Again, they said…no.

Where we (community users) can report Firmware Bugs?

I have a bounch of annoying bugs… and if with this FW 3.15 these bugs aren’t fixed i want to report somewhere….

@Bloody Marcel PSN admin clearly state that using this method with FW3.15 you will NOT be able copy protected saves like Killzone 2 between PS3s, so I did a back up when I swapped hard drives and that copied back my Killzone 2 save fine! this method between 2 PS3s will not work, so you will have to back up to external hard Drive instead, really, I dont see the point of this part of the FW update if you cnt copy all your content over to another PS3…but you can back up to external Hard drives…as for PSP minis on the PS3, well, that sounds desparate, PSPgo cant be doing very well to make exclusive content now available to PS3…not that I find the minis worth buying anyways:) just my opinion…

coalmoore 9 December, 2009 @ 4:21 pm   262

I have yet to try any of the minis as i have yet to download any games for my psp. My wish list for future PS3 updates… Please no Twitter… Myspace… Facebook on PS3.
I got rid of my 360 because they changed the dashboard and starting adding all that crap to it (Though thought we were getting Facebook on last update).
Skype would be cool… Great use for the camera.
More visuals for when i’m playing music would be very very nice! (shame that 360 has way better visuals)

I agree this copy controlled save thing needs a proper fix, some sort of game save only backup tool in the system software or in a hardware unit. Link the copy controlled saves to PSN ID or a way to upload and download them from a secure PSN server… anything.

As it stands I am scared to start certain games with copy controlled saves(ie demon souls) until I finish other ones ie DA:O due to fear of PS3 croaking, its old and been running at higher fan speeds then it used to at same temps for last couple months.

The existing backup tool transferred ALL my copy controlled saves and installs when I upgraded HDD in same PS3 unit, We need a tool or option in existing backup utility to transfer all saves to new PS3 hardware.

I’m sure its possible to do many ways just need enough noise for it to move up the firmware development priority list…

Data transfer sounds useful and the revelation that I’ll be able to play Pinball Fantasies on my PS3 is awesome – I love old Amiga games…although if you could introduce a C64 emulator I’d be over the moon. My only other request would be for PDF file support on the PS3, I think that would be a VERY useful addition to the consoles capabilities. Keep up the good work guys!!

i hope for the love of god that James the mod is incorrect about copy-protected gamesaves not copying transferring across to the other PS3.

Gamesave files aren’t big right? So with all this technology we have, and with almost everyone online, why doesn’t Sony make a PSN gamesave service whereby your gamesaves are held on a Sony server, and when you login with your account, on ANY PS3, you will start to download any changes in gamesaves between whats on the server, and whats on your PS3, minimising download usage because it only downloads whats changed.. or hell, even just downloads the gamesave for whatever game your playing, then uploads it again when your done, leaving nothing offline. Don’t know.. something like that though would be sweet as, and is like an absolute must-have for the next-gen consoles.

From the EU forums regarding the controller syncing issue,

This post was recently made by a ‘Technical Support Advisor’ on the EU forums,…ending&page=10

“Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your patience on this one. I have been advised that this issue has been fixed with the

launch of the new firmware tomorrow.

I guess that’s about as an official of an acknowledgement as we’re going to get, strange as to why they didn’t mention the fix in the blog post.

thenextbutton 9 December, 2009 @ 5:45 pm   269

I hope this firmware really does fix the issue of the controllers.

Every since 3.10 I have had to switch the machine on at the front and then the controller on after.. granted not a BIG deal but if I forget I then have to switch off the PS3 and back on again to get it going.

I do like they way the first question in post 11 is avoided though, lol.

The_Thin_Duke 9 December, 2009 @ 8:06 pm   270

Will there be a firmware update for the blu-ray drive aswell? My blu-ray drive went nuts after the Modern Warfare 2, 1.06 update. My games freeze after awhile, escpecially when the driver reads alot, and you can tell that the blu-ray drive is having a hard time reading the disc. :´(

MOst of the time I can access the XMB, but when I try to shut the system off, it never does, and you can hear the driver reading and reading and reading, making these “read sounds” with a couple of seconds interval.

When will there be an option to format only the “OtherOS” hard disk partion?

If the other OS needs to be re installed you have to reformat the ps3OS partion too and that is kinda lame.

My linux install started locking up at boot and i was unable to reinstall and the only way I could fix it was then, reformating the whole hard disk again.

but I bought a 500gb then so that was the only reason it got fixed it was not worth reformating the ps3OS for it.

IF you could just erase the otheOs partition it would be easyer to reinstall or install new OS without messing up the ps3OS content on the harddisk.

VoXeR_91 9 December, 2009 @ 11:00 pm   272

So after reading some replies… I seem to find this really unnecessary seeing as most people want to copy the PROTECTED ones if your PS3 dies.. This updates only transfers the ones that is NOT protected… And only works while you have both PS3’s.. Therefore… Useless… 🙁

Afzal_Ali 9 December, 2009 @ 11:09 pm   273

we NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CROSS GAME CHAT !!!!!!! i ask for nothing more

I don’t give a monkey’s what features they add as long as they fix the bluetooth synching problem with Slim PS3s and don’t break anything else in the meantime. Would be nice to have James confirm that this has indeed been addressed.

I’d understand if Wii firmware caused the same issue and didn’t get discovered by the Nintendo QA as all dev kits have wired controllers for some strange reason, but the Sony QA have no excuse for not discovering this problem before releasing the update. The whole thing has now made me wary of updating my PS3 firmware in the future as their QA staff obviously aren’t good enough…

@ different posters: Not all people need or want cross game chat !

I_P1NKY_I 10 December, 2009 @ 12:32 am   276

I guess for some people this update will be helpful. But to be honest there are alot of people out there including myself who would like some info on whether or not XGameChat is ever going to be released.

Its the most asked for feature, but yet its also the most ignored topic. Its as though whenever someone asks about XGameChat you all seem to avoid them. Why?

It would be nice to have some sort of XGameChat, even if its with only 1 or 2 other people. At least then you can talk to someone whos playing a Single Player game.

Now please give us some info on this.

Bloody_Marcel 10 December, 2009 @ 3:11 am   277

Do you believe me now? 😉

Guillemots 10 December, 2009 @ 3:12 am   278

New Firmware now available! 😉

DeathToll_619 10 December, 2009 @ 3:38 am   279

cant wait 🙂

FluxZero 10 December, 2009 @ 4:25 am   280

Great new added functionality guys. This will help all those upgrading to the PS3 “SLIM”.

Also cant wait for some mini action on the big screen. Quick question on that actully. I have already downloaded all the minis onto my playstation 3 will they work automaticlly.

this is getting better every day, now the “official” information you get from Sony contradicts with their releases and a user has to provide the info. seriously weird.
No if this transfer is able to move protected files, then someone (who knows it please, no guessing) answer this:
– can you transfer via network or direct connection only?
– can you select which save to transfer? Because the current use case does not match my requirement as I am using two PS3 in different locations and I am not upgrading one. I therefore do not want to transfer all content from one to the other but only some files. Does this work?

donwhann 10 December, 2009 @ 7:15 am   282

is the network down or something today as i cant get onto the forums. im getting a little Authorization box on screen asking me to put my login details in but nothing happens after that.

sketzombie 10 December, 2009 @ 7:18 am   283

my PS3 phat died last nite. i was 5 trophies to getting plat on ACII.

any ways with this new update can a dead ps3 do a transfer of files to a new slim ps3? i know it’s a silly question, im just desperate.

I wonder if anyone will reply to these comments.. but i have a question.. in regards to backing up saves and transferring to a new pS3..

i was planning to pick a new ps3 slim this month, and wish to transfer all my data from my old ps3 to the new one and save all the files from the old to the new slim.

will my save files be intact? I just read many people on the DRAGON AGE ORIGIN discussion forum that when they backup the files, and restore on another PS3, all the save files were not restored… with this new sofware update, will i be able to keep the save game files?

i heard a lot of games have locked save files.. ex: killzone 2 da:o etc..
please tell me.. when i buy my new ps3 slim.. i can CONTINUE TO PLAY MY GAME.. and restart the hours and hours i’ve played so far… (hoping)

i have question
how the the transfer done, i mean by cable or something we most get it ??

liamlangan 10 December, 2009 @ 8:28 am   286

Thats my wishlist for the next firmware, take notice Sony

Kotatsu2000 10 December, 2009 @ 8:39 am   287

As you’ve gone to the trouble to write a PSP emulator, why restrict it to just minis? It doesn’t make any sense.

And if you’re in the mood for emulation, stop stalling and bring PS2 emulation to all PS3s.

Kinda weird update, but it will be useful (I think)

ryochou93 10 December, 2009 @ 8:55 am   289

I did the update but ff8 isn’t working
will it works when he will come in the store?
i have the normal version not the platinum
thx for the answer

Luckies_AUT 10 December, 2009 @ 9:22 am   290

I don’t know why people would play PSP games on PS3 (in combination with a big FullHD display), ok anyway.

The possibility of transfering data between two PS3 systems is a great idea.

I would be more happier if you would fix the sort problem with photo albums. Because these can only sorted ascending and NOT descending. Other viewings can both. Would be very kind and helpfull.

RuskiDubh 10 December, 2009 @ 9:33 am   291

Maybe I’m being over simplistic here but how hard would it be to implement something like Apple have with i-tunes – i.e. have the ability to authorise/desauthorise content across different hardware?

Where is the support for cross-game-voice-chat?
I’d like to see more effort on updates on making the PS3 the no 1 system. As of now the main competitor has a much more powerful online service for games.

Yes I know their service is not free, well give me the option to pay for a better online gaming service and I’ll sell my other system tomorrow.

I use my PS3 to play games online with my friends, I don’t care about Facebook or Twitter, yes cool stuff for the people who use it.
But I’d like to see some progress on the gaming issues now!

Ps. great system, I love it, but for now its not an “online system” Ds.

close but FAIL, but I want a transfer utility I can backup to external disk and put on another PS3 ie. when u have a catastrophic failure (YLOD) or SONY have the ability to unlock the encryption and can transfer your data to another PS3 (even for a cost !)

Or Sony can guarantee that your PS3 will never fail ???

Or lets start the rumour again that SONY are going to stream game saves and downloads into the SONY cloud storage…..a bit like what Steam/Valve are doing for game settings..

Hi James,

Being an fairly new memberUser of PS3 and its facilities I sincerely hope that the new firmware contains many bugfixes of the Internet Browser. As it is now it is bearly any ide to include it into the platform. JAVA crashes the browser more or less in 100% of the cases and there is poor support for different PLAY services using FLASH. I read somewhere that the Firefox browser is considered. That would maybe take PS3 to new heights…?

OH ya I also want to install games by the XMB like a full install.

The xbox 360 lets you install any game to the harddisk I LOVE that. the ps3 is game indipendant installs.

I want to install every game I play to the hard disk before I play it disc drives suck harddisk is better in everyway.

The disc drive should only be used as a means of transport to the harddisk.

I would totaly copy 50GB dual layer bluray games to my harddisk. I got 500gb of space and not even close to using it I want to full install games.

[QUOTE]If you back up to an HDD you will only be able to restore the content to the same PS3.[/quote]

This is wrong.

I have backed up my old phat PS3’s information, and restored it to my new slim without problem.

99% of my game saves were transferred.

IMO – this update is pretty much useless for backup/restore options to ps3>ps3. Until developers STOP protecting PS3 saves, and Singstar and other such games allow their downloaded songs to be backed up (or they let people redownload the songs if a PS3 breaks), then its useless to me.

I dont have photos on my PS3, and I dont have music on it (iPod anyone?), its the important saves and downloaded videos I want backing up. Nothing else.

we gamers love to see titels like JEANNE D’ARK to be playable with PS3 too !!!!!!

hope that will happen in the next months

@ Bloody_Marcel ( Great news!
If confirmed, I think I’ll be shopping for a 250 GB PS3 very soon.

Bloody_Marcel 10 December, 2009 @ 11:48 am   299

It’s great news yeah. Problem is I couldnt get the whole transfer process to work properly. I tried 4 times, and it always fails with a 80010029 error. I tried deleting stuff progressively, until I only had copy protected saves on the old system and I still got that error. :/

@ James Thorpe – PlayStation Network Product Manager
Why does the Data Transfer Utility say that even saved data that is copy-protected can be transferred (moved) while you say it’s not possible? What’s this 80010029 error and is it dangerous?

@ Bloody_Marcel Maybe this solution for upgrading the HDD works:
1. Make backup.
2. Install new HDD
3. Begin restore operation.
4. Hit circle to cancel restore at 98% (99% if you’re brave enough).
5. Follow on screen instructions to rebuild Database. (SUPER EASY).
6. Reboot and deleat the “corrupted data” in the GAMES menu on the XMB.

Guys, James was right – “protected saves can not be copied from one PS3 to another”, but it can be moved – protected save will remain only on one of the consoles, old or new.

RuskiDubh 10 December, 2009 @ 12:48 pm   303

Even though it now looks like copy protected saves can be copied (moved!) via this new utility it still doesn’t cater for the most common scenario – i.e. where people dilligently backup their data to external storage and want to restore it on a different/new PS3. Ok they can do it but copyrighted stuff is lost in the process. I still can’t see how useful the current implementation is – how many people are going to have two working PS3s?!?

technole 10 December, 2009 @ 1:29 pm   304

Thanks James. A lot of us would like the suggestion of being able to move locked save games on-the-fly and/or via the backup utility to move to a new PS3.

For example if one’s PS3 is no longer usable. If it gets replaced via Sony, a backup will not restore the locked saves to a new PS3.

Now for publisher requirements, I think Sony and ALL publishers (including Guerilla games) needs to look at LittleBigPlanet as an example. All the DLC content is downloaded and saved via game data. The save game file is not locked and can be moved between other PS3s. So if the DLC doesn’t exist on the other console, it’ll just load like there was no DLC present.

Also Capcom has learned about locked saves because of massive comments from users at, they made a patch to remove the lock from the save game for Resident Evil 5.

Honestly, Sony needs to either remove this lock completely or re-evaluate how its being used because there are developers that are blatantly abusing this feature whether intentional or not.

Thanks for reading!

lardteamaker 10 December, 2009 @ 1:33 pm   305

Are Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies compatible yet? as i tried both and they are both telling me they need to be copied onto a psp and not loading on my ps3. 🙁

FlowStudio 10 December, 2009 @ 1:50 pm   306

My Fat Ps3 just died on me… it´s blu-ray drive stop reading Blu-rays disc…

I was playing Dragon age and my save game had something around 28 hours of game play.

Yesterday I bought myself a Ps3 Slim, hoping the backup utility would help me out….but nope… My dragon age Save game wouldn´t be restored to my new system…

LOST 28 hours of gameplay…

Why can´t the save be transfered and validated with my psn account, assuring the publishers that the copyrighted content is not been transfered over accounts?

But to the same account on another system?

I can imagine another ways to make this data transfer possible…but WHY MUST MY SAVES be LOST? Because of trophies? If yes, why not Bound the first use of them in another system into a validation of the psn account that “owns” the save?

Sady Farah Junior

Scooby4ever 10 December, 2009 @ 1:59 pm   307

Please add voice chatt so me and game buddies can chatt even before we start a game please. And a voice chattroom would be awesome.

I have noticed that trophies wont sync with servers for over a 2 weeks now. Is there anything wrong with sony servers? I do know that sony is getting alot of new users but this is not the fault i hope.

technole 10 December, 2009 @ 2:03 pm   308

Its not the trophies. Because they are locked to the PSN ID that it was created upon. This information is actually in all save data locked or not in the PARAM file. So one can’t just take a save data from one PS3 or the internet from another ID with 99% completed and expect to unlock trophies on their own account.

As for Dragon Age, I have a feeling it is based on my comment above. Some developers are abusing this feature for multi-path games. Since Dragon Age requires several playthroughs for the platinum, the lock could be used to prevent a backup by a user far in the game, then restore and take the other path. This is a poor excuse to use the feature. A way around this? Buy the PC version so you can back it up. So for Sony, this is a potential lost sale.

Killzone 2 save game lock is probably because of lack of attention or understanding of how locked saves work. The multiplayer data is saved on Guerilla’s servers.

Guerilla is the only Sony studio that is locking their save. You’d think they would learn a thing or two from Media Molecule and Naughty Dog about how saves should work.

isn’t it great that we do not get anymore replies from Sony here?

@ RomanB No he wasn’t since at post 32, James wrote: Sorry but you won’t be able to transfer some game saves as they are protected by the publishers

Helvedeshunden 10 December, 2009 @ 2:34 pm   311

I’ve installed 3.15 now.

I re-downloaded all my Minis but only one (BreakQuest) is working. Tetris and Pinball Fantasies don’t work.

Archangel-252 10 December, 2009 @ 3:59 pm   312

Be careful with this upgrade, it’s turned my PS3 into a brick, I can’t get past the update screen now….

richn1748 10 December, 2009 @ 4:26 pm   313

Hmmm Love the minis idea but Data Transfer whats that all about. I can already do that with my External anyway and glad to see you think we all got enough money to spend on a second PS3 seeing as there sold a such a blatent ripoff price COUGH!!!. How about something usefull like a bit more support for online media im so sick of “THIS APPLICATION IS NOT SUPPORTED” Drives me mad i mean even this site dont support PS3 properly i had to use me PC Unbelievable. Also would’nt hurt for you lot to be a little more Generous on the Playstation Store how about the odd free ps1 or ps2 classic now and again and maybe some new dynamic themes ?

Afzal_Ali 10 December, 2009 @ 4:26 pm   314

is the ps3 ever going to get cross game chat , And great updat very useful but still no cross game chat , is the a facebook update yet like the xbox 1

Sambuque 10 December, 2009 @ 4:46 pm   315

A clarification post about protected-save transfer and mini on ps3 would be welcomed as poeples (including myself) seem confused.

FlowStudio 10 December, 2009 @ 5:38 pm   316

@ technole

I undestand that…

In dragon age preventing u to save game because of the multipath is a poor excuse from the publisher since we can make multiple save in multiple places…reload them and achieve another twist in the story (and another trophy)…

This are the times that clouding saves would be nice…for backuping (only)

MalicePA 10 December, 2009 @ 6:28 pm   317

I just wanted to say that I love the updates that Sony has been putting out on the PS3. And that data transfer ability will come in so handy, especially since you only need a regular network cable to transfer the data.

Now that the PS3 can run PSP Minis, add functionality so that we can also run PS2 and maybe even full PSP games from the PS3. That added functionality will make the system sell like hotcakes. Look into that down the road please.

iggy_ogg 10 December, 2009 @ 6:32 pm   318

i’ve updated and installed breakquest which works but tetris doesn’t

accman68 10 December, 2009 @ 6:55 pm   319

Useless update

1. Let multiple PS3’s share info over a LAN…. I would buy more consoles if I could access playtv etc over the network.
2. Make the HD swap straight forward as the current way is U/S
3. Make it absolutely easy to access anything that you have paid for. I’m never paying for downloadable anything online again. Buy the disk atleast you know where it is.
4. YLOD…. can we have a nice blue light to complain about.

GiveMeTheHorizon 10 December, 2009 @ 8:20 pm   320

Yeah, that Ps3 data transfer system would have been awesome back when I did buy a new Ps3.
If Sony made games like Kz2 let people transfer saved games on flash-drives like everyone else then I wouldn’t be fussing.

Nice job releasing the cross-game-chat!

siredward 11 December, 2009 @ 12:31 am   321

plukyplums12 11 December, 2009 @ 2:23 am   326

how can u only get the new grand theft auto on the xbox 360 when the game was created for playstation? that seems weird to me and when can we get playstation 2 games on playstation network?

Darklurkr23 11 December, 2009 @ 3:06 am   327

Not sure if this was asked already cause I’m not going through 7 pages of posts, but DOES THIS UPDATE FIX THE BLU-RAY DRIVE PROBLEM FROM 3.1? I.E> CLicking, Drake’s Fortune Freeze, Trophy Synch problems.

Mesmer1zed 11 December, 2009 @ 4:00 am   328

This is sp pointless. Why go out and buy a LAN cable when you can just copy everything you want onto a simple usb device? You can copy game saved data, videos, music, photos, etc. Just not game data cause its software and not able to be transfered. [DELETED]. Way to go and be [DELETED]. what we really need is XMB voice chat. We have twitter and myspace and facebook n the browser.

I would be excited about the new features – but the update broke my Blu Ray drive. Great. Here’s hoping that Sony can fix this issue with another udpate ASAP.

“Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.”

“328 Comments 14 Replies” Ahahahaha….. Ahhahahaha….

14 replies on 328 posts is the best you can do? (even if it is only 1/4 with questions it is still only 14 out of 84).

I’m sorry Sony but you are making a joke out of yourselfs. Why is it that Sony never gives decent replies? The same happens when you mail to support or any other blog post around here. Do you guys even care about your customers? It is really dissapointing Sony…

@Vorlon, thanks for the link. just got a new slim today and want to transfer my dlc.
Just a quick question if anyone could answer it. When i do a transfer, does it transfer my accounts over too? Or do i have to create existing accounts on my new console and then do a data transfer?
Thanks in advance.

@ Lum26 – I think and hope all accounts are transferred. Just follow all instructions to the letter. I’m working up the courage to do it myself one of these days. (I already bought the 250 GB PS3)

Thanks for that mate. I’ll do it later today and let you know how it went. I just got the 250 gig version too. Its still sat in the box because i wasn’t sure about the account transfer.

the use case of the copy functionality is useful for ONE scenario. I wonder who designs this stuff at Sony … this is totally ridiculous and just cr4p

@ Cuthred – This update (if flawless) is great. It’s just what many people were waiting for to upgrade to a slim PS3 with a big hard drive. I was not very happy to have to delete game data every time I bought a new game. Minis on PS3 are a nice bonus.

@Adam Grant
I think that FW 3.15 have a bug.

After updated my console the new XMB Icon “Saved-Data Utility (Minis) dint’t appear….

Whops… i meant @James Thorpe

as I said, it is covering one scenario: upgrading to a different PS3.
What it does not cover:

– move your data if you use different PS3s (either at home, or transfering to a buddy you visit and want to play with over the weekend)
– if the PS3 dies and you made a backup, you will not be able to restore your protected saves to your new PS3 (different HW, correct me if I am wrong)

So while I am suprised that they may actually provide at least finally something, it is again half hearted and not really well thought through.

data transfer seems like great idea but would like the option not to delete the data on orignal ps3 as me and my brother hav one and would save downloading the same games twice and using boardband usage but not givin that option! Boo!

Are You gonna do sth for Mkv support??Everybody is asking for it and makes the system be so out-of-date!!!!And still there is no answer for it even after so many requests…

I’ve just done a data transfer from my 60 gig to my new 250 gig console and it worked a treat. It copied everything, even the browser bookmarks. 🙂

After doing the data transfer i checked my old ps3 and all of my families accounts were still there. All i had to do was sign back in and re activate them, so you don’t lose anything at all from the console that you do the data transfer from. It took about 2 hours to do the transfer and at times i wondered if it was doing anything at all because it stayed on 43% for about 30 minutes, but i left it to run its course. I was worried about losing everything by doing the transfer but i was suprised to see everthing on my old ps3 intact.

My dynamic themes got corrupted doing the transfer but all i had to do was re download them. Nice update Sony 🙂

Thanks for the update Lum26, i’ll probably do it next weekend.

Today, Dec. 14, I have been watching AVATAR trailer from official web page. As usual, PS3 system get in loop, so I had to turning off pressing I/O button. The question is, When PS3 system will support HD 1080 and QuickTime files without this kind of problems?

Brandon691 15 December, 2009 @ 12:05 am   352

Why are we getting all of these useless updates why not have an update like being able to upload your pictures and make them your avatars. That is one simple thing that we do need; I doubt I’m gonna use this update in anyway any time soon. Why doesn’t Sony create something useful for once, instead of giving us stuff like this that we will only use like once.

User created avatars? You must be dreaming! Think of all the potential abuse and lawsuits.

ramzez_uk 15 December, 2009 @ 2:21 pm   354

Are there plans to implement DivX 7 in future firmwares and support MKV files?

I would also suggest making PS3 visible on the network for backup, copy files to PS3 purposes.

Just did the data transfer and it seems to have worked perfectly.
I did have to try 3 different ethernet cables before one would get recognised by the PS3.
By the way, .avi files are just fine. If you use Vuze, you can stream videos to your PS3.

BritishBlue 15 December, 2009 @ 6:17 pm   356

If you do the data transfer, create PSN accounts and deactivate source system for all users: _update.html#data_transfer

I downloaded Pinball Dreams for my psp about 444 weeks ago, So this firmware update was good news. i rushed to my XMB to find a new folder for mini save data … visited downloads section to redownload pinball dreams. poped back to my XMB to install it and BAM!!!! NO install option… and i quote ” exclusivley for the psp” . i have read elsewhere on another forum that there is a compatability list and the ones that dont work out weigh the ones that do by 3 to 1. this is stupid why include something in a firmware update if its not fully working. I am very dissapointed with the level of service you are supplying me SONY. i am considering switching to xbox360. they have X game chat, animated avatars, other little gimmicks like Online 1 vs 100, quizes , prizes. i feel like im getting a cheaper service. give me one good reason to stay loyal and not line bill gates hand with some of my hard earned cash……..

Fatal_Tricky 17 December, 2009 @ 7:51 pm   362

Congratulations on the update, i’m sure many will enjoy it. Is there going to be any chance of getting maybe, itv player? Skype? Twitter? These introductions to the XMB would really make my day 🙂

May i add, i’m a proud owner of 3 PS3 Systems =)

SMAILLIW 18 December, 2009 @ 1:45 am   363

you just don’t get it sony people buy games to play not to work on PsOne or Ps2 protected files didn’t happen so why did i have to play through Res-evil5 get everything Smailliw account then go to my Sephiroth_Chaos get through 50% have my Ps3 die get a Knew one and lose everything From both accounts Demon’s Souls is the same locked only on Ps3 so you cant blame developers for this then you offer a transfer Ps3 to Ps3 all game data then when asked you say only data you don’t need to transfer so what’s the point of transfering data that you save to usb cause you might have system die corrupted file

This is why I love Sony, Sony doesn’t wait til Everyone starts complainin about needing a new update Sony just makes new useful updates and everyones happy. Thanks I really needed this update, upgrading from 40 to 250 GB and I was plannin to use a 2 gb memory stick 20times!!

why do people keep on complimenting sony on something that doesn’t do much good jak242 you will lose copy protected games so why the update why the compliments whats the point sony please tell me why you keep making updates that don’t improve gaming and bring back the good times that were on PsOne and Ps2 you could play any game save on any system and just have fun. It seems you want fans to get upset rather than just love your products still loyal to playstation but 3 years no state-of-the-art graphics not much 1080p you really are pushing the loyalty very disappointed not what i thought sony would do to me but i don’t think you care about loyalty anymore please let me know if you plan to solve any of the problems

Its pretty unbelievable how many comments there have been talking about voice chat, and yet sony haven’t done anything about it? All We need is this then there is no other reason to the competing console.

Work on that please Sony, and maybe downloadable PS2 classics aswell? I personally would kill to play Sims: Bustin’ Out again.

I’ve been trying to re-download my rockband purchases from the PS store on my new ps3. I’m using the same psn account, but when I try to download, it’s not recognizing that I’ve already purchased the song before. Am I missing something here? This is the first time I try to dl to more than one ps3. Help please.

fleck-it-boy 18 December, 2009 @ 11:37 pm   368

Tbh, I don’t really see the point in the transfer, if it doesn’t work for locked utillity becuase we can already do it. but as games such has LBP if we transfer the data will the trophies be blocked becuase its a copied/transfered. and is there anyway that we can transfer locked content other wise, well no offense its just pointless.

please reply thanks, Sam.

Player-3000 19 December, 2009 @ 11:42 am   371

can i undo corrupted data like change it to the save point before it will take me about a year to get all my stuff back

the info under system settings >>> data transfer utility says even data that is copy protected can be transfered (moved) so why james thorpe are you saying it wont???

anyway the problem i have is as follows:

YLOD PS3 which sony have no interest in replacing so i have had to pay ££££ for a new slim version

what i would like to kno is if i put my old hdd from my ylod ps3 into a another one in order to retrive the data will it be formatted??? if it will how am i ment to get all of my data from it?

taurus-smith_30 19 December, 2009 @ 6:57 pm   373

ELMO4LIF3 19 December, 2009 @ 11:04 pm   374

sounds great but it would be cool if there was an update to play ps2/ps1 games on my ps3 because theres still classics ive got.

colormage1 20 December, 2009 @ 1:45 am   375

Okay, after I did this update, the PS3 stopped reading my games and DVDs.

What do I do to rectify this problem?

Twiztid_Sikn3zz 20 December, 2009 @ 7:21 pm   376

thats great but to late my blue ray went bad a few months ago so i got a new ps3 and the other one is at the dump lol sure could have used that new feature on 3.15 maybe next time

nobodies_romeo 20 December, 2009 @ 9:35 pm   377

DRM is the cancer of the digital mediascape, slowly it will rot all that it touches and hurt many as it ploughs way through the land!

Seriously I had no idea that game saves couldn’t be transferred between devices, I already avoid purchasing video cos I’m guessing that’s DRM’d to the nines and if can’t move it to my TVersity media server (like I have my entire cd/dvd collection) then I don’t wanna know. Now I find that I can’t move game saves either! Well there goes my plan to buy a second PS3 for my bedroom (that way I could stream media and MY play games too).

When will companies realise that they are selling to PEOPLE not devices and the relationship you build with them can last a lifetime!

P.S. My big update wishlist is that you allow us to create (MUSIC) playlists from items we have on our media servers, or allow the music player to access media server content directly so we can play our own music in games (I don’t want to copy music back and forth every time I change my mood or game!)

Bryant174 20 December, 2009 @ 10:02 pm   378

Why can’t I transfer the protected saves? That should be removed in the next firmware update.

When i try to update my ps3 it turns it self off .. do i have to turn it back on myself when this happens.? (its fully updates and installs up to 80% then shuts down)

hallo wa

Demendred 22 December, 2009 @ 7:03 pm   381

Pretty sweet…..but when are we getting Castle Crashers?

It seems some people are still confused. This data transfer does transfer protected/locked game saves and profiles. They are deleted on the source system but are transferred to the new PS3. This has been tested and verified!

midgetgamer 29 December, 2009 @ 6:18 pm   383

Great news because after exactly 2 years of PS3 40gb use it’s life came to an end. All features work except for the ability to play games on disc/cd’s or movies. The laser disc reader is actually what dies i suppose. reading other blogs sounds like it has happened to others as well. Not to say it is a common system error. The PS3 has been great. Will get the PS3 slim 120gb and move all existing data over hopefully seamlessly. We have spend ALOT on PS3 downloads for Singstar, Pain and Little Big Planet. All of this should transition over…right?

Stickandrideher 30 December, 2009 @ 6:19 am   384

My 60g ps3 gave me the ylod. I went and bought a new slim 120g. Will I be able to repair it myself/game stop (no point in sending it to sony, I heard they send you a refurbished one) AND the HDD only works on the ps3 that formated it in the first place and I want to keep my data. Then can I update to 3.15 and use the data transfer to get my .jpgs transfered? I don’t care about any of the game saves I only want my pictures!!! And of course I didn’t create a backup. Will those files be transfered??

persuaders 31 December, 2009 @ 6:02 pm   385

Im happy to see constant updates. On an unrelated topic. When can we expect an update that allows videos to be stored in their proper folders?

It already happens with music but when you copy movies over you have to have them stored or grouped in a folder called a, b, c, d, etc

BLacK898 31 December, 2009 @ 9:22 pm   386

Im sure everybody is asking but when are we getting cross-game voice chat !?!

WastedDude911 1 January, 2010 @ 5:14 am   387

Why do people make such a big deal over Cross Game Voice Chat. If you really want to talk to your friend about something when you guys are on different games, isnt that what the PHONE is for. Even a simple text, get on killzone 2, if you want your friend to play get the job done. Sony should focus on more important things. One important thing they should include in their updates is the ability to tie game saves to a persons PSN ID account, that way they can get rid of that damn protected game saves problem. Please Sony, add that feature.

KillerKilburn19 1 January, 2010 @ 7:50 pm   388

do your trophies get transfered aswell?

jonaldinho12 2 January, 2010 @ 3:58 pm   389

sounds good but ive been downloading it for the past 3 hrs and its on 34%

hackenbacker 3 January, 2010 @ 3:09 pm   390

1) Why wasn’t data transfer created BEFORE bringing out the PS3 slim model? There are a few saves I lost when I upgraded my fat to slim?

2) It is simply NOT sufficient to rely on data transfer as a solution to moving locked content from one console to another. Because what is the backup function for?

And I mean that comment seriously – right now, the only possible value in backing up a console is so that you can restore it in the event of a hard drive being error / being replaced IN THE SAME CONSOLE. It doesn’t cover you if the console itself fails, and that is simply WRONG.

In the event of a full system failure, you should be able to restore protected backups onto a new / replaced system. IMHO, the simple answer to this is to at the very least allow protected backups to be restored to systems that are activated on that account.
