Introducing Heavy Rain Chronicles + The Special Edition Box

Hi everyone – Alex Pavey here, with some exciting updates on Heavy Rain – the dark thriller from Quantic Dream where your choices can have dramatic consequences.

Heavy Rain

Hopefully many of you will have seen some of the great first impressions of the game that are popping up all over the place. This is the first time that journalists have been given the opportunity to get to play through an extended series of scenes in sequence, so it’s really exciting to see all the positive responses. Look out for the previews (though if you’re trying to avoid even minor plot spoilers, be careful out there!).

The Heavy Rain Chronicles

First of all, I’m pleased to confirm that Heavy Rain will be supported by some very interesting downloadable content – The Heavy Rain Chronicles.

These are a series of additional, fully-playable scenes, where you’ll learn more about the backstory of some of the characters you’ll meet in Heavy Rain itself. The first episode will centre on Madison – and the setting will be familiar to those of you who have been following the progress of Heavy Rain closely…

Heavy Rain Chronicles

Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist sees Madison Paige investigating a suspicious and reclusive taxidermist, and finding herself unexpectedly in grave danger.

The episode is an expansion and update of the original ‘Taxidermist’ demo that received such a positive response when shown at E3 and gamescom last year.

Chronicles One and Two will be available for download from the PlayStation Store after the launch of Heavy Rain early next year – although there will be some opportunities to get hold of the episode a little earlier. Which brings me on to…

Heavy Rain – Collector’s Edition

I’m excited to announce the Heavy Rain Collector’s Edition…

Heavy Rain Special Edition

The Collector’s Edition is packaged in a special ‘rain-effect’ slipcase – thanks to special embossing and other manufacturing tricks, it gives the impression of being streaked with 3D rain-drops (something that has confused a lot of people when they’ve seen it lying on my desk recently!).

But cool as that is, that’s not all. The Collector’s Edition also contains a voucher to download the following additional content from the PlayStation Store:

  • Heavy Rain: Chronicle 1 – The Taxidermist – Experience Madison’s dangerous investigation in full, before it’s available on the PlayStation Store
  • The Heavy Rain Official Soundtrack – Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios, and filled with the powerful orchestral themes that form a key part of the experience of playing Heavy Rain
  • Dynamic XMB theme – Lend a little Heavy Rain ambience to your XMB

The ways in which you can get your hands on the Collector’s Edition will vary across Europe, so keep a look out for more info on this soon.

That’s all for now, but I’ll be around in the comments section for a while to answer any questions you might have – and keep your eyes open for more Heavy Rain updates soon.

ooh nice.
and the game looks fantastic too.

That box art looks amazing… I cant wait to see it in person!

A non oversized collectors edition? Yes please.

Can’t wait to get this. I’ll be ordering this edition as soon as it’s on the GAME website.

Any chance of a HD video of the original “audition” demonstration on the disc as an extra? that was stunning.

Can’t wait for this :) Hopefully the special edition will be made available in norway as well.

Getting it. I’ve been hoping that I’d get to play the Taxidermist demo it looks really fun/creepy. I cannot wait for HR, and I shall be pre-ordering the special edition as soon as the opportuinity presents itself.

Day 1 DLC?

yeah….. wooo….. :(

I hate this generation of gaming sometimes :(

I never say this but Day One for me on the collectors edition

I hope it doesn’t cost too much.

Looks cool though

Want. Special. Edition. Now.

Any news on a confirmed release date?

Oh yeah! I’m gonna get this!
Looks like a great game!

Best gfx 2010??

Cool, cool and more cool! Well done guys this looks amazing!

14

Is the DLC already on the disc? Will we just be buying and/or downloading an unlock key for the Chronicles?

really good to see this isnt a giant sized collectors edition with something useless i dont care about, but adds value to the core product.

Any word on pricing , such as, would it be better to buy the collectors edition if you want the DLC for example rather than buy the standard edition and get the DLC separately?

mmmm looks good.

Hello,

Heavy Rain has been my number one most awaited video game since its public revelation. I am not the type of customer who spends money on DLC and purchases a game day-one , but be certain that i will purchase each and everyone of the supplemental content you will be delivering to Heavy Rain.

I will support Quantic Dream, and i sure hope that many will do so as well. This is a title everyone must absolutely experience.

Yours truly,

aat08

oh snap. day freaking one. good job on these collectors editions sony! they are 100% awesome!

Its sounds good that a CE of a game is including DLC (which most devs are just finishing off at the time of release anyway). But what is Heavy Rain? Isn’t it just a much longer version of Linger in Shadows?

Oh i do have a question: Could David Cage send me an invitation to visit your headquarters :)

Bought! Should go nicely with ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. :D

22

Is the case cardboard of metal?

Cardboard cases tend to fray and annoy me after a while.

Nice one.

24

how much is the special ed and where is it available from?

25

Also… i’m confused.

Are the chronicles free or paid for?

Are these instead of or including the demo.

Is it free? Are you going to say something about the price?

Thanks.

I have an idea which could be good.
For the limited edition, put some instructions on how to make an origami in it. And with that, put like some piece of paper with the playable character’s faces on, so when the origami is correctly finished on each face of the origami, you can see their faces. :D

Yay or nay from anyone?

Is this a limited edition or not?

Awesome box art!

30

Wow that looks good =D

I take it the Special Edition will cost a bit more?

Whens this game out again? Looks awesomely awesomesauce

32

The box art looks amazing!! I cannot wait until I get my hands on this game! :)

SE package looks awesome, and having a dynamic theme is a nice bonus. I’m really looking forward to this game and will definitely be getting the SE package and I’m really glad the story will be continued with episodic content too…

Been looking forward to this since I watched the casting vid at E3 07 (i think) can’t believe it’s almost time, and media blackouts FTW

Hey everyone! Great to hear such positive comments, and really glad that you’re excited by all this news (and especially that you like the box art!) :)

To try and answer a couple of queries:

I can’t confirm an exact release date yet, but it’ll be early next year (so not too long to go!)

The Chronicles are additional, paid-for DLC episodes (unfortunately I can’t confirm the exact pricing yet) – but you get the first episode as part of the Special Edition.

Chronicle One isn’t included on the Special Edition disc – you’ll be downloading it from the PS Store using the voucher code that comes in the packaging.

The pricing and availability of the Special Edition will vary across Europe, so I can’t give a definitive answer right now – but more information will follow.

Oh, and LockIeys? Interesting idea you’ve got there… You know what they say about great minds thinking alike? Well, you’re not the only person who’s suggested that idea… ;)

Have a great weekend guys! I’ll try and pop back o...

I really hope this isn’t a play.com exclusive, buying games from there is terrible, you never get them anywhere near the launch date. They’re the reason I didn’t bother with Assassin’s Creed Black Edition.

Cool looking Box that ;P

According to the US blog they are valued at $4.99 each episode – so based on previous exchange rates used I would estimate between £3.19 to £3.99 per episode.

According to the US Blog

“Each Chronicle will offer unique, stand-alone, playable short stories featuring one of Heavy Rain’s main characters, and a storyline taking place either before or after Heavy Rain’s original narrative. Similar to Heavy Rain, each episode will offer a unique journey and different outcomes based on the players’ decisions and actions.”

So they are not directly related to the main game’s narrative, so no need to think you’re going to have to pay so see the end of the game or anything like that. Heavy Rain as a concept really suits this type of episodic narrative IMO…

P.S. I think it would be a cool little extra to have some origami instructions included with the game as well…

39

Just to jump on the comments; having origami instructions would be very cool. Of course i would just create the one that’s on the box =P

Nice for a “special edition”, not exactly so for a “collector’s edition”. I mean, no soundtrack on cd, just some downloadable extra’s and a fancy slip-on cover? At the very least a concept-art book would be nice for a collector’s edition. There have been quite a few amazing concept art pics from this game so why not? Or a making-of DVD, it’s well known that Quantic Dream has their own motion capture studio, I mean this has to be freakin’ hilarious to see how some of the scenes were put together: http://i50.tinypic.com/2mnmywj.jpg (from the Quantic Dream website).

Also, I really do hope “available in Europe” will actually mean “Europe” and not just the UK as is often the case. Collector’s/Special editions are rarely available here in the Netherlands, while the UK has often multiple stores offering all sorts of bonus stuff.

Definitely purchasing this :)
and yes, extra physical content is amazing :D like the paper crafts killzone 2 did
im all for having instructions for the origami killers origami ;)

I’m seconding a request for an HD version of the audition. This is a day one purchase for me. The only game I’m sure to buy in 2010.

DLC and CE announcement before clarifying a fixed date for the actual game = FAIL.

Exception: God of War, because..its GoW

Fantastic collectors edition.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for years. If Quantic Dream pull this off, this will be my GOTY.

Can’t say i’m very impressed with the special edition. No art book, no making of DVD, No in-game prop brought to life, No figurine. Just a bunch of repackaged content you could easily get elsewhere/at a later moment.

Disappointing :-/

SOUNDTRACK DIGITAL OR COMPACT DISC?

This is always left out of this kind of news, but essential to most buyers. Most collector’s would love the soundtrack to be on a CD and to be touchable/physical instead of digital. Too much extra’s are going digital and it annoys the hell out of me!!

I’ll definitely be grabbing one of those CE’s. I have a feeling you’re going to get burnt by announcing the DLC now though, people are going to want to know why it wasn’t included on the regular disc…

A few more adult dynamic themes would be appreciated too, SCE…

Disclaimer: By ‘adult’ I mean Uncharted, MW2, Ninja Gaiden, etc :)

Do you know when this will be available to pre-order, and by which stores?

Any extra information would be handy, thanks.

50

awesome!!! ;)

I’ll be picking this up for sure, I freaking loved Indigo Prophecy(the first half at least).

I have high hopes for this game, assuming the internet isn’t the final boss.

GuttermouthSIN 18 December, 2009 @ 19:22
52

Announcing DLC before the game is even released is pretty pathetic. I’m buying the game day one but this is ridiculous.

53

How come the US get the Chronicles free with pre-orders, yet we have to pay for it?

54

To quote…

When you pre-order your copy of Heavy Rain at participating retailers, you will receive the first episode of The Heavy Rain Chronicles (valued at $4.99 each episode) titled, “Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist,” which will be available (only to those who pre-order) when Heavy Rain hits store shelves

So are you saying you cant order the chronicles separately? And how come you know the price for US, and not us?

Wonderful! The pack is very stylish, preorder asap.

Thanks for all the further comments, guys :)

DaftMav – To clarify on the packaging itself – it’s not just a fancy slip case over the regular Heavy Rain box – it’s a fold out digi-pack with exclusive artwork on the packaging and manual, so it does genuinely feel like a really nice package as a whole. I’m aiming to do an update post with full visuals of the inside, because it looks great. And you’re right, there’s a lot of great behind the scenes footage of the filming sessions – which you will indeed get the chance to enjoy too. I can’t confirm release specifics for the Netherlands right now unfortunately, but I’ll see what I can do next week.

divine1000 – Glad you like the look of the Special Edition. Regarding the DLC – it actually wouldn’t be possible to include it on the disc, as it’s being completed after Heavy Rain itself has mastered and the discs start being pressed – but by including a PSN voucher, we can give a bonus to those of you that pick up the special edition. divine1000 – Glad you like the look of the Special Edition. Regarding the DLC – it actually wouldn’t be possible to include it on the disc, as it’s being completed after Heavy Rain itself has mastered and the discs start being pressed – but by including a PSN voucher, we can give a bonus to those of you that pick up the special edition. As Apnomis rightly says, the Chronicles are additional scenes set within the world of Heavy Rain, but standing alone from the main storyline.

chimnino – The soundtrack will be digital, I’m afraid – doing it that way lets us include more content overall within the special edition, so hopefully the benefits will become clear.

GuttermouthSIN – We knew that The Chronicles would be ready soon after launch, and had the opportunity to offer the first episode as a bonus to the people who are most excited about buying Heavy Rain – so I thought I’d let you all know as soon as I could :) As I said, these are additional stories, outside of the main plot of Heavy Rain, that people who enjoy the game can download to extend their experience – you’re not going to be left with a cliffhanger at the end that can only be resolved by paying for more content ;)

That looks cool, I hope I can get one of those collector’s editions :)

V00D00CHARL1E – Pricing takes a little longer to finalise for Europe I’m afraid, because there are various currencies to take account of (I know you’ve heard it before, but it’s true) – but I will be updating on that soon.

There may well also be some separate pre-order schemes as well as the Special Edition. But this honestly isn’t about being charged for something other people get for free – this Special Edition is an (exclusive) chance for the European fans who are most excited about Heavy Rain to get a really nice collectors’ package, with exclusive artwork and additional content at a good value price.

various currencies to take account? Lol, and let me guess…1 dollar = 1 euro is being applied YET AGAIN!

I think it should work the other way around this time. French studio, so price the game in EU regularly, then apply 3 dollars = 2 euros (give or take a few cents) and watch the Americans getting angry but still not realizing what’s wrong with prices in Europe…

I just hope it doesn’t come in those cardboard box cases, that would be a definite deal breaker.

Alex:

Can you tell me if the downloadable Chronicles will have Trophies of their own? Many games add Trophies with each DLC pack released for them.

Will Heavy Rain follow? I’d appreciate if you can dig up this information for me. Thank you! :)

63.1

Hi Andrefpvs – I don’t know the situation with trophy support in the Chronicles for certain, but I’ll look into it on Monday and try to get an answer for you :)

Nice, very interested in this game and seeing as the special edition doesn’t include a plastic hovercraft or something similar it should be a reasonable price :D

Are you serious?! The game isn’t out yet, and you want to SELL DLC?! I mean, the F…?
I thought that this game will be box only, whole story, and now you are telling me that i must PAY for background story? If you have a plan to add it, why not take some time, and add it into game itself, insted of milking my money?
/one customer less.

66

@Lockleys

There is a piece of paper in the game box and the instructions how to make origami play whilst the game is installing.

Outstanding! Gorgeous looking boxart.

I’ll be purchasing this day 1 and I hope there will be similar Special Editions for future SCE titles.

68

OH also

@Alex

Thanks for answering questions, hopefully you can answer mine.

What material is the packaging made out of?

68.1

Hey onlineatron – It’s a good quality, specially laminated card digipack, with special paper stock for the (full colour) manual.

69

Would also love to get the audition tests and behind the scenes footage on disc, a feature like the ‘Passport Disc’ Shenmue came with would be amazing!

Great. Can’t wait for heavy rain, after the short amount that I played already it is my most anticipated game of 2010. I just bought Farenheit for the xbox off ebay which I am looking forward to receiving as I never got around to playing it last generation, and it looks pretty awesome. There are some great games to look forward to next year. Bring 2010 on.

71

Cannot wait for this game!!! Collectors edtion all the way!

hold on
are european boxes getting the “only on playstation” logo for exclusives aswell?
if so thats gay

OMG number 72 your right. That changes everything. I’m not buying this game any more. Not with that on the box. I mean thats totally [DELETED] that is….. I hate the internet sometimes.

Day one DLC? put it on the disc [DELETED].

Anyway are we able to get Chronicle 1 free if we pre order like the US?
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/12/pre-order-heavy-rain-and-get-the-heavy-rain-chronicles/

75

Awesome. Will definitely be buying the collector’s edition. Can’t wait for this game, definitely one of the most unique gameplay experiences to date. :)

i might go import this game for the collector edition unless there is a us collector edition

Thanks for answering Alex, hmm a digi-pack eh? That means getting it from a local store because those cardboard boxes always get mangled in the mail *shakes fist at mailmen around Europe*.

Can’t wait for it to come out though, I’ve played it at GamesCom and it was very interesting. Only the walking (or giving throttle) with R2 I think felt a bit weird, but I’ll get used to it.
In truth though I’m even more looking forward to the next Omikron… The first one is still in my top 10.

Looking interesting and all, but could I please request that you DON’T make this special edition a GAME exclusive in the UK?

Hmmm The Taxidermist is free in the US when you pre-order (what I already intended to do because I’m going to have it day one).
That leaves us with the soundtrack, the nice box sleeve and the Dynamic XMB theme. I hope it’s not going to cost much extra.
The Taxidermist is the demo E3 level (should be free guys) and will probably cost $4,99 in the US PNS. Thas SHOULD be €3,48 but we all know how we are treated in europe. I just hate the DLC structure because it makes the game even more expensive (but I will probably buy it when the price and the reviews are right).

Hmmm, i struck a great deal with amazon.uk aa cupple of month ago. 33GBP… thats roughly 40€ devilvert to germany. I don´t think i will give that deal up for stuff i can download for a few Euro. (i dislike the idea of the soundtrack not being only on my PS3 btw.)

US DLC is Priced 4.99, i higly doubt that we will pay less than 4.99€… thats an ok price i guss… but i bet the DLC will be only 15-30 Minutes each. :-X

Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist

should be free on the Store before HR comes out as it’s been dragged around for months as a demo and we’ve all probably seen or read everything you can do in it anyway.

if not i guess i’ll be buying that (paying for a demo! pffft!) before i chip for the full priced deal.

This looks like a very nice collectors edition.

The cover looks very eye catching and it’s made even better with the little effect.

I remember watching the taxidermist episode, it was rather a chilling encounter. Really pleased to know it will be playable.

I wish you guys all the best when it launches in 2010, I for one will be buying this on day one.

You are not getting the taxidermist as demo boys. They would give as introduction the tutorial level what already in the game is. So you get familiar with the controls of the game. Anyway, i am so gonna buy this game, the experience is just unbelievable for to say.

One question,is it already confirmed on the ‘game mania’ stores in belgium-the netherlands? Because i would it pre-order so.

Thanks!

this game looks great i get worried when games look great on ps3 cause so far a bit average. That said am really looking forward to this game when does it arrive in Australia thanx Quantic Dream for a greatly needed change in gaming and sony for allowing then to use Ps3

We’ve waited long but I think having a PS3 will pay off next year. The line is amazing and games like HEAVY RAIN that have a completed different gameplay approach makes me water from the mouth:/

Wow! That looks and sounds great!

Will have to go and cancel my pre-order now and look out for the Collectors Edition!!!

This is the level of care and attention that the Silent Hill franchise needed after Silent Hill 4: The Room, now it’s just rubbish, and worse with Shattered Memories.

Cannot wait to get my hands on his and play the Chronicles, the game looks incredible. And if people don’t like it, then people don’t deserve “that something different” they have been craving for years.

FIRST DAY BUY!!!! :D

Hi guys! Our American friends already can pre-order Heavy Rain. When will we have such possibility? Cheers.

If there is a game I intend to buy, and there is a collectors/special edition, then if it includes extras of value I will buy it. So well done SCEE!

90

If the length is good, and it’s as good as I imagine it, I’ll be willing to drop around £50 on this for the collector’s edition…Yes it’s ridiculous (as I don’t like paying more than £35 for even the best games) but I would love to support a game like this so we get more of it and it’ll be my way of thanks to Sony for giving games like these a chance.

However if the main game is “gimped” and they try to make money back with these DLC Chronicles, then I’ll be highly disappointed and just buy it like I buy every other game (under RRP, probably used and the normal version).

Note this is my most anticipated title for 2010 beating heavy hitters like God Of War 3 so hopefully, option [paragraph] 1 is what will happen.

90.1

Hey somethingatt – I can promise you it’s option 1 that you’re looking at here. You’ll get the full Heavy Rain experience on the main game disc – the whole story arc, from beginning to end. Think of the Chronicles as similar to the web-based additional side episodes you sometimes get with TV shows – they will enhance your enjoyment of Heavy Rain even more if you do play them, but you won’t feel cheated if you choose not to – it’s completely up to you. Great to hear you’re excited about Heavy Rain :)

That collectors edition box looks goddamn great, as the great Victor Sullivan would put it! =D

I’m pre-ordering the SE now.

A coloured instruction manual will be nice too.

94

Hi Alex

Do you know if the voucher to download the epidsode would be given away as a part of a store deal? For example, would Aamazon give the code when you purchase the standard version of the game from them?

I’m asking because I don’t like the digipacks. Eventhough the special effect on the cover sounds cool, I’ll more than likely still buy the standard version

Thanks

Wait? There’s a different post on the US Blog, that doesn’t include the announcement of the Special Edition. Does this mean EU gets the SE but US doesn’t?

Preordered the CE today! Now the waiting game starts…. :)

Alex can you tell us (me) if the Collectors Edition is coming to Germany too?
And the boxart is probably the best looking of all PS3 games to date.

97.1

Hi jimmi1989 – I can’t give exact details for each country right now, but I’ll try and update with more information for you next week.

Thanks to you and everyone else who complimented the box art by the way – we spent a lot of time working to create something that would do justice to the game itself, and it’s great to hear that you like the results! :)

98

Wow 2010 is looking like an amazing year for gamers, this one may well be my first day 1 purchase since Zelda on the Wii. Huge fan of farenheight and if you haven’t played it it’s well worth tracking down, Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian and FFXIII are looking like THE games I’ve been most looking forward too for a long long time

Thank you very much Alex, I’ll look forward to your response :)

I love good stories, so therefore I really expect Heavy Rain to deliver ;)

Hiya any word on which shops are preordering the special edition one and also the cost of it, been waiting for this game since saw the first trailer looks bloody amazing :)

101

Nice boxart hopefully it isn’t more then €70 then I won’t buy it haha simple as that :p

102

I can’t wait for day one when this beauty falls onto my doormat.

103

I am absolutely preordering this Collector’s Edition but I really hope this will be available through Amazon UK because I get most of my games from them and I don’t really like GAME. In any case, please let us know soon where we can preorder it from because this is one of my most anticipated games this generation!

Any info for me, Alex? :(

105

god i cant wait for this amazing piece of art..ill probably get the CE since its a good offer, DLC i was gonna get anyway and the OST and a dynamic theme are fine extra’s too..

106

Thank you for your reply [Page 2], Alex.
It was very re-assuring.

I have a question: Will the digital soundtrack be only able to play on the PS3, or will I be able to transfer it over to my computer to listen?

Can’t wait for the game =D

Yeah that’s what i’m wondering. how will this ‘digital album’ work? I still buy CD’s then put ’em on my devices & seal it away.
anyways excellent product, team. I really like what you’ve done on this journey. and now quadrupled my enjoyment for Quantic’s hot anticipated release.
to all involved with Heavy Rain, well done & have a great & safe New Year’s Eve!

Just to be clear, there is a standard edition in the EU of this to right? Because right now sites only seem to be selling one version with no mention of it being the CE, yet the box art they’re showing is that one up there (Collector’s Edition packaging).

110

Alex, I understand it might have been difficult for you to find time to answer me back. If you ever see this comment, please consider including the answer to my question in your next blog post here.

Thank you, Alex :)

when will we be able to pre-order this??
many thanks :)

been waiting for anouther game like Fahrenheit
