Media Molecule Officially Joins The PlayStation Family

As the Senior Vice President for Worldwide Studios in Europe, I’m really pleased and excited to welcome Media Molecule to the PlayStation Family. We announced today that we have acquired Media Molecule, making them a wholly owned part of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Media Molecule Logo

The decision was an easy one after meeting five young, talented people with a massive ambition to redefine video games as we know them and create and grow a fantastically talented team at Media Molecule. This was followed by a fantastic exclusive relationship that culminated in the launch of one of the most innovative PlayStation games of recent years. Of course, LittleBigPlanet needs no introduction here, as it was thanks to you that it became a best selling PS3 title when it released in late 2008.

The acquisition will enhance the talent pool within SCE, protect past and current investment and ensure a solid base for future investment. Media Molecule have exciting projects in the pipeline and we’re looking forward to sharing these with you in the not too distant future.

The most important thing is that nothing will change from your perspective; Media Molecule will simply continue to make great games. Welcoming Media Molecule into the PlayStation family will allow us to better support their future titles and ambitions.

In case you’re still wondering why we would purchase a developer who has only one game under its belt, allow me to present to you their list of awards and accomplishments — just click “more” below. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s an enviable list.

I have no doubt that this will mark the beginning of an even more exciting relationship with Media Molecule for the future.

Excellent news. Everyone know that PlayStation’s strength lies in the strong first party exclusives. Hopefully future Media Molecule games will benefit from this.

This purchase has my blessing.

Fantastic work Sony for supporting newcomers MM. now, Get Quantic Dreams into the family, they’re certainly keepers too :D

Carnivius_Prime 02 March, 2010 @ 17:00

Excellent! Looking forward to more LBP DLC :)

Wicked news!

Congrats, MM!

DiscoMcDisco 02 March, 2010 @ 17:03

Ah brilliant News,.. The LBP fanbase will keep it alive moving forwards, and with people now comfortably buying into LBP packs i think the game has solidified it’s position for the duration of the PS3’s lifetime…

I’m excited to hear what’s coming next though, must have been a few things in the list that tipped Sony over the edge to buy them in.

Good luck to all for the future :D

Michael Denny 02 March, 2010 @ 19:09

Thanks for the support. The future plans are truly exciting . . . more on that at a later date . . . .

CloudStorm87 02 March, 2010 @ 17:03

This is fantastic news! IMO, Media Molecule is one of the best, most creative studios out there and this is a great move by Sony. I’m sure it will prove to be the start of great things to come! :D

Wow, contrats. :D

Great for Sony.

I just hope this wont end with key members of MM taking the money and walking away from the studio leaving it a shell of what it once was which is sadly often the case in this type of thing……. I miss (good)Rare :(

still… on the upside I cant wait to see what they come up with next. LBP was/is amazing

Well done to both Media Molecule and Sony. A great partnership, if ever there was one. I look forward to what you both will announce, later this year!

Awesome news, my shares just went up big time xD

Great, I just love LBP!

Awesome support and loving all the DLC awailable and coming! :P

Great news!

GutsBerserker 02 March, 2010 @ 17:09

One more talented team added to the already outstanding Playstation family. I hope they won’t be wasted on some simple Arc/Wand casual projects.

Welcome to the PlayStation Family! :)

FANTASTIC TO HEAR! I hope this will be a great relationship between SONY and MM! Let the guys keep innovate and sprue fantastic games! I LOVE LBP and I wish the best of luck to you guys/girls!

NOW, SONY! I WANT MORE HEAVY RAIN GAMES! I love it to death and My girlfriend is playing it right know and adore it!

That is also the case whit my co-worker that is a female and many costumers that is about 30-50 years old and have a PS3.

SONY and Quantic Dream, you have it a potential gold mine!

Michael Denny 02 March, 2010 @ 19:18

Thanks for your comments. It really is great to be able to work with such talented teams and bring new exclusive IPs to Playstation and broaden the appeal of gaming in the process.

Thats great news!! Im well happy!!

I Love LBP. This sounds like great news.

Congratulations to Sony and MM :D.

Good times!:)

Congrats Sony and Media Molecule

Congratulations MM and Sony! Good job investing in development that is thinking big and a bit outside the box.
Now all we need to hear is that Sony is also financing Quanitc Dream’s next project. :-)

somethingatt 02 March, 2010 @ 17:24

*mr burns*

Be sure to keep talking together though, don’t want to read about the heads of MM getting sacked for ‘insubordination’ anytime :)

SCE WWS = THE best group of developers in the world.

Haha Microsoft just got PWNED.

Jem Alexander 02 March, 2010 @ 17:28

Hey guys — just letting you know that Michael will be around in a couple of hours to respond to your comments. :)

CONGRATS WELCOME MM can’t wait for ur next big hit :D:D:D

Fantastic News and congratulations to Media Molecule who now have a very secure future as one of Sony’s internal development studios.

I can’t wait to see what comes out of MM in future especially since now they get to work even closer with Sony and other Sony first party devs.

Awesome! Congratulations Mm and Sony!

Mm studio has only five people?
Wow, those cats must be truly talented!

Michael Denny 02 March, 2010 @ 19:26

Just to clarify – when we first met the guys, they were just 5, now they are an awesome team of over 40 molecules . . .all are truly talented cats !

When will you make the Playstation Network officially available to Playstation 3 customers in Morocco ??

btw what can we excpect from you guys at E3 huh?huh? you can’t keep it a secret forever ;)

almighty-slayer 02 March, 2010 @ 17:42

So come on, spill, when’s LBP2 going to be here? :p

Amherst_Wind_4 02 March, 2010 @ 17:42

Now maybe we can expect to see more LBP posts on the EU blog?
The US blog gets a monthly (maybe weekly I’m not sure) update with dlc info, level picks, etc. Whereas its hardly ever mentioned on this blog…

Uhm… What’s with the double Joystick Family Game of the Year Award?

And for more serious business…

What will this mean for us, the consumers, in terms of gaming? More DLC? Faster published DLC? New games?(Not expecting you to open the lid on that one… :P) Or something completely else? Perhaps a serious effort towards keeping Pluto’s tag as a planet?

On the US blog, they met 4 young, talented people.
In the EU blog, they met 5 young, talented people.

Yesss!! AWESOME!!

Great news for Owners of Sony Gaming Systems! :D

Well done to both parties,I think there was a three game deal, but i’m guessing the next project has helped close the deal.
Really looking forward to seeing what MM come up with next.

Sweet, LBP is the only game I will keep until LBP2, all the other games get traded in at some point, Well done Sony and Media Molecule, Hope you keep pumping out the great entertaining games, I can not wait till to the next member of the LBP family.

Smart move, Sony =)

Michael Denny 02 March, 2010 @ 19:30

Thanks for your support. I think its a smart move for everyone . . . MM, Sony and playStation fans worldwide

Congratulations! Great decision by both parties!

I hope Quantic Dream will join Sony’s first party as well, I loved Heavy Rain, a very unique and moving game. I’d love to see them continue making games for playstation.

Great news. Congratulations MM!!!

Sony already thought of buying Insomniac and Sucker Punch too? Among others…

There will be portuguese in the american version of God of War 3?

And there will be portuguese in all european version, including UK?

Great news. Damn, I still postpone buying LBP

Brilliant!!!! Absoulutely Brilliant!!!!

so now that great bit of business is concluded and i look forward to more MM projects in future how about looking at the possibilty of rewarding quantic dreams by welcoming them into the playstation family and perhaps United front too. Heavy Rain is one of the most unique games of all time and i would also like to see what else united front could do too besides the fantastically looking Modnation racers

Luis_FFgamer 02 March, 2010 @ 18:47

This is great news for Media Molecule, Sony and us gamers. I do have a question regarding future LBP DLC, when will we see the Final Fantasy/Sephiroth costume pack on PSN? It’s been well over a year since it was 1st announced.

Thise is the news of the day. Now to buy Sucker Punch and Insomniac. I would hate to see those guys turn to the darkside. =P

Excellent stuff. Sony’s first party studios are amazingly talented already but having Media Molecule as part of the future is exciting as a fan :D

I agree with someone who said to keep quantic dream too, BUY IT! :D But MM has build one of my favorite PS3 games ever! That i still play with my friens on the couch ^^

great news!!

superb news!! congrats to Media Molecule and Sony , now can you guys acquire Quantic Dream and Level 5 ? only 14 days until i play 1 of my most anticipated games this entire generation
Man , God , LEGEND!!!

You guys should buy Quantic Dream, after all their game was a incredible seller for the UK.

Nice move! That studio is bursting at the seams with talent. :)

Quantic Dream should be the next!

Brilliant news! Really looking forward for future projects! Now with the blank cheque buy Quantic Dream!

On another note best of luck MM with future projects

Awesome sony ! XD

Kudos to MM. PlayStation have a bunch of really talented developers and MM joining it just made it all the sweeter.

Excellent news!

Perhaps the talented folks at MM can help fix LBP PSP now? :P

maybe a t-shirt like the week one with no 3D stuff on with a PS logo on would be a nice gift :)

Well done Sony =)

Well done Sony. I hope Quantic Dream are next on the list… :D

Awesome news! That’s such a wise move of Sony!

This is excellent news! Good on MM. Does this mean that you’ll be making some rooms for MM at the Soho SCEE HQ or will the molecules keep their humble premises in Guildford? Just curious!

good to see a talented group like media molecule will now be 100% dedicated to the playstation platform, i can’t wait to see what they can accomplish with their new status as a first party dev.

Or perhaps MM becomes “Studio Guildford”. Like Psygnosis became “Studio Liverpool” I mean.

Nice one Sony! and congratz to Media Molecule

Well done Sony, this is a great acquisition.

Looking forward to seeing what MM do next. :)

i made a shirt design: really hope we could get something like that with no 3D stuff, just like the week one :( but yet again, congratulations ;)

Thank god they joined the family. Let’s pop over to Naughty Dog and ask for a Sack Boy skin for Uncharted 2 lolerty.

Good times ahead.

Miguel_Zorro 02 March, 2010 @ 21:40

This is great news. LittleBigPlanet is one of the most creative and well-developed games that I’ve ever played. Hopefully Sony and Media Molecule continue to work well together. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next! Sony has a real all-star lineup of first party studios now.

pokrytysniegiem 02 March, 2010 @ 22:00

Next? Quantic Dream!

Awesome news!

Rude_Sparthan 02 March, 2010 @ 23:50

..difficult to hear a better news!! ;) congratulations guys.. both sony and MM I wish you a brillant future for you and for us!! thank’s for LBP!!

RealSolidSnake 02 March, 2010 @ 23:57

This is fantastic news, not surprised at all though to be honest, now then, Michael Denny i have one question for you

How long until you acquire Quantic Dream??? ;) Heavy Rain is a masterpiece!!!!

I’m just delighted. Great news for PlayStation supporters. I love Little Big Planet for both PS3 and PSP. I hope more DLC are coming soon or, why not, a Little Big Planet Plus or something like that for PS3. By the way, what happened with those final fantasy costumes that were rumoured a long time ago? Copyrights and all that stuff, isn’t it? Anyway, I’m really looking forward to what you guys are planning next.

Quantic Dreams and thatgamecompany should be the next ones too!!

Didn’t you guys already own the LittleBigPlanet trademark or was that solely media molecules?

anyway good to see, look like sound blokes and wish them all the best in the future on the playstation platform..

Helvedeshunden 03 March, 2010 @ 09:35

Wow. I hope you don’t go and shut them down like the old Psygnosis/DMA Design boys.

WOOT! Now Sackboy Avatars!

Wow, that’s amazing! Well done Sony and to the people at Media Molecule, welcome to the PlayStation family, I hope you’ll have a great time. We love you already :-)

I’m guessing the offer from Activision wasn’t quite tempting enough…

This is really good news! I’m sure MediaMolecule has a bright future ahead as part of the PlayStation family. This is also a good opportunity to secure Sackboy as a PlayStation mascot, because let’s face it, it already is in the hearts of many Playstation 3 owner!

I can see only good coming from this partnership!

superste2201 03 March, 2010 @ 12:27

Yay Sony have the best 1st party dev’s.

oh yeah !
Mm made an unforgivable game and of coures you deserved it
we going to support you for ever thanks Mm and Sony .

Poor MM. We’ll never see anything as good as LBP come from MM after this. Sony loves putting out garbage. And you easily impressed, naive youngsters will just eat it up.

Enjoy God of War, you poor saps.

GuttermouthSIN 03 March, 2010 @ 15:52

Fantastic acquisition for SCE.

this is brilliant its great that such fantastic developers are financially secure thiis means your have the time and resources to make amazong games i cant wait to see your future projects

i hope you guys would replace all the current avatars in playstation home with game characters and not just outfits actual game character models like sackboys uncharted 2 models rachet and clank jak and daxter series metal gear solid and many many more theres almost an infinite amount of characters you could have

it would help cut down on the dancing face rapes that a lot of people do on playstation home lol

this is great not only an amazing developer but also I have been thinking about a carrer in game development and they live near me so it would be great to know i was only deving for playstation (the awsomest people in the world) if i did end up joining them (which i hope i do :)

Media Molecule? I read about it earlier and was pleasantly surprised. I was getting worried that you might lose a great developer to Microsoft someday but it appears that you won’t. The console war has but just begun… It’s great to have both consoles though, looking forward to great titles from Media Molecule, keep’em coming!

Great move Sony! ;)

So good luck to MM for the next – exclusive – projects on PlayStation (3 I hope this time :D)

That’s great news. Every one of those awards is well deserved. There are few games out there that have given me such a “Wow – i’ve got to get that!” factor based just on an early preview video but LittleBigPlanet, Heavy Rain and The Last Guardian are three that did it for me.

great i love this game! and my 10 year old cousin wont go on any other game its quite annoying

I wonder/hope if that MM is gonna be like the old Bullfrog or Lionhead Studios of sony. It would be nice, but I think they are capable of even more.

A super move by Sony. Nice to see the recession hasn’t prevented Sony from making sure the best talent stays with the playstation. Looking forward to many more great exclusives from the team.

Europe wants LBP Game of the year edition!

Great News! :)
a smart move by sony and a good purchase now that this takeover is complete I can see the LittleBigPlanet market getting bigger and if there is a LittleBigPlanet 2 or a LittleBigPlanet: little big sticker collector it will be great and if playstation are lucky some people may buy PS3’s just for LittleBigPlanet
